Reversing a 40 tonne Mercedes Truck - How hard can it be ?!

- I recently got invited to reverse a 40 tonne Mercedes truck around a corner. I mean how hard can it be ?!
Seriously thought I have always wanted to drive an articulated lorry, ever since I used to go out in my brother truck as a kid. I loved trucks before I loved cars. I've driven a few 7.5 tonne light goods vehicles but this was the first time I had been given the opportunity to drive a Class 1 HGV.
Huge thanks to Mercedes Benz for the experience of a lifetime !

Got my class 1 35 years ago .... expires next year, 2 months after I retire, won't miss driving/recovery etc .... it's the others on the road that don't know or don't care
Great fun!!! I drove 3.5 tonners for a while as a commercial/agri tire fitter back in the 80s. But they're just like a big, long, slow car really.
My mum did loads of caravan towing after she retired from being a senior nurse in charge of operating theatres at various NHS hospitals in the South East of England. She was always with her best friend, who had a similar career. One time she pulled over to help out a guy who was endeavouring to get a 40ft trailer into a very narrow lane. She and the driver agreed hand signals and she helped him, very quickly to get the rig lined up with the little alley. He thanked her profusely as he jumped down from the cab and gave her a huge hug and snog on the lips!!! They said cheery-oh and mum walked away going woohoo and punching the air!!! BF thought it was hilarious!!!
LOL…brilliant 😂
Hello Good Buddy, ya back door is brand new as we say. Mercedes have some nice rigs now days. You’ll have to try a Scania, Volvo, DAF and Renault to see the comparisons because you would see the differences. Cheers for the shout my friend, I was impressed when you mentioned my postings of the Economy figures, thankyou. Those cameras are brilliant, however, when raining, they are terrible, but, they are still new technology. The stalks are easy to catch as they stick out more than conventional mirrors. I’m sure they will get better. You did very well, it is addictive. Brilliant my friend. I’ll have ya helping me shunting tonight. 👍👍👍👍. 10-4 Rubber Duck. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🇬🇧
Would love to drive more 👍
Big respect mate. I see guys at work manoeuvre the big double decker articulated lorries in a small yard in the early hours of the morning every day. So much admiration for them all
When I worked on a race team, if we had somewhere with a bit of space, like an empty paddock, I used to let the mechanics and team goffar have a go at driving the Transporter. It was a bit of fun and gave them a bit more appreciation of what can be seen from the cab of a truck and how much space it needed to manoeuvre.
I was an HGV driver until 2014 when ill health forced my premature retirement. Until then I'd done it for 22(?) years, mainly hauling shipping containers & remember well the day I was told by my agency that I'd be driving a 44-tonner that day for a company in Alcester. That came about 2 years after I passed my Class 1 test, during which time I'd been built up from 7.5's through all intermediate sizes, including wagon-&-drag outfits (with a separate trailer connected). I absolutely loved the job & occasionally still miss doing it. Glad you enjoyed your experience & great video as always.
Pete, wow what a super video I would love to have had a go at that and yes definitely more truck reviews needed. Who ever knew that trucks could be so interesting and fun! Brilliant and thanks 👍
Thanks Steve 👍
I have my Class 1 licence. Everyday I climb in to my cab and leave the yard, I have a huge smile on my face. For me, it's an absolute joy to drive such a large vehicle. I fully understand why you also had such a big grin.
👌
than you must be a new driver.. i like it even after having it for 3 years.. i am still waiting to get bored doing it.
Just passed my Class 2 HGV licence and gained huge respect for HGV drivers.
While you're in the test mood, go and do class 1 if finances allow, different ball game altogether but well worth it
@@Djwatzy Plan to do it this year, hopefully funded by employer, and looking forward to the challenge.
@@richardsargeant9217 ah ok 👍
People will treat you like shit the amount of car drivers that try and just put in front of you is unbelievable and then they call you a wanker just because they're in the wrong
Top job Ped. Bit left field but none the worse for that. Shout out to all the truckers keeping us supplied with what we need on a daily basis.
Oh yes. Big shout out 👍
In the late 70’s my father was an HGV1, he worked for a company that he regularly drove the middle east, Saudi, Iran, Iraq, Syria, on average he’d be away from home for 6-8 weeks, Ashtran they were called. The trucks then had no power steering, aircon and all the home comforts they have today!
Wow 😯
Well done Pete, loved the dramatic music whilst you were reversing the articulate truck 🚚
Couldn’t help myself 😂
Loved this, I’m very humbled that you remember me so often, thankyou. 🙏🙏🙏👍🇬🇧
That’s what mates (albeit virtual) do 👊
Well done sir! Must have been a great experience which you clearly enjoyed..
that must be amongst everyones dream to drive an artic....really smiling with this video....as a kid i wanted a big lorry with a motorcycle in the back...
I used to collect Matchbox Convoy trucks 😜
Well done "Articulated Ped" 😂 , That was ace mate .. You gotta do more of this . Would you do your LGV ? Your professional driving Level really shows in this video .. Fantastic Sir 👍👍👍
Brilliant, love it. Really good video and well done on the reversing!
Thanks 🙏🏻
Love it, I was so excited the first time I drove a lorry at work. Used to work for a truck dealership.
Cool 😎
A new career opportunity for you if You Tube fades! I think HGV drivers are far more skilled than many realise…a good friend decided to give up Retail Management to become an HGV delivery driver and enjoys every moment. One drop involves him in bringing an A road in Bristol to a stop then he has to reverse his trailer into an access lane just 12 inches wider than his unit…there is no room for getting it a bit wrong. At first he was terrified but now enjoys the challenge! So safe driving and next…loading a car transporter….that takes confidence and bravery!! 😨😎😎😎Richard.
Ooo…car transporter 🤔 That could be next 😜
Wow that was brilliant. Looked like so much fun. Aspirations., yes more truck videos!!
I’m on it 😜
Great Scottish guy !!!!!! but did you understand all those instructions he was giving you Pete !!!!! cos I certainly didn`t 😊😊
Yeah. I tuned in pretty quick 👍
As a class one hgv driver who has been driving 44 tonners for 24 years I can say you didn’t do a bad first job there , very impressive .
They had just put the weight up to 44 when I started driving It was good fun with a manual box back then with a full load, I don't know about you but I do miss a manual box now and again just to play a tune or two to love the automatic mind one less thing to worry about if driving in cities ect.
@@leelizington9501 I passed my test in an old ERF twin splitter box , I do miss a manual but automatic definitely makes life easier especially around London .‘biggest annoyance I find now is these blind spot cameras, the constant bleeping below15 mph .
Wow, How times have changed. I used to drive an artic many years ago. These modern trucks look so easy to drive, in comparison. Great stuff.
They are 👍
Sat navs auto boxes, yeah easier to drive,
Just the job has changed.
Stress off the scale
😂😁
Wow, looked like a great day. Loved a different video.
It’s sure was a bit different 😜😂
I miss driving trucks, but I don't miss the baggage that comes with it and the nights away from home.
My lad keeps talking about training as a HGV driver. It looks like great fun but a lot to take in at the same time! Great video!
And a huge responsibility 👍
I enjoyed watching the Video. Different to driving a Car
Oh yes 🙌
Takes me back to when I tried to go for my HGV back in the day, went off to Tangmere airfield to do all the manoeuvring and emergency stop practicing, before hitting the open road in and around the area and then onto Worthing and Lancing where the test centre was, still have massive respect to all HGV drivers regardless of what size trucks they are in, always feel sorry for them with all the muppet road users doing anything just so they don't get stuck behind them on the road, you definitely won't forget about your experience now Ped
I used to walk the dog across Tangmere 👍
That wasn't so bad for a non trucker, well done! as for "for the older generation not liking mirrorcams etc." it depends on who you ask, I love technology, and yes, you've guessed, I'm a trucker myself, driving the big beasts, double decker's mainly, its all good fun, just would like a bit more care and respect of the highway code from drivers in cars, to many of them behaving like kamikaze headless chickens, just think(???) we are carrying the stuff you need for your everyday comfort's, so we are very important in your life, not your enemies.
Not to shabby a first drive in the big boys toy 😊. Amazing how much technology has been added for added safety and efficiency. 👍
Thanks Paul 👍
Very cool and fun video Sir Pete! You were like a little kind with his big truck toys lol.
Oh yes 🙌
Love it, I learnt and passed my HGV in a Waggon and drag 👍
👍
Reversing it is a piece of cake.
Making the trailer go where you want may be a different story! (Although not as hard as the TG/GT Boys make it look...!) 😃
😂😂😂
When I was driving I drove both the older Actros with dials and buttons and mirrors, and the new generation ones like this with the touch screens and the mirror cams. There's good to be said for both tbh. The best points of the mirror cam are the way the camera follows the back of the trailer when you're turning as mentioned in the video. But also when you put it in reverse the view goes wider giving you much more visibility for reversing and making it easier to blind side. The down side I found was that, working nights, once it got dark and you're on an unlit road, the mirror cams show absolutely nothing but video noise. And having driven Scanias, DAFs, Volvos, and MANs, I actually prefer the Actros and I think I could only be convinced to go back driving if I could have one. Great video
iv just got a t range 480 2022 and its night and day diffrence on fuel getting 9.8MPG now and from my 2015 scania 450r 4.1MPG. DAM i miss my old truck and u did well on the revercing for your 1st time
Great video , really interesting . I do have so much respect for the people that drive these trucks. I see them down near my work and how they manoeuvre them in to such tight spaces always amazes me , I say to myself I wish I could do that.
It’s quite a skill 👌
You probably could. Just takes a bit of practice. Ultimately they're just a big car + caravan :-)
Hi Ped
That sure was different, loved every minute. Maybe you could be persuaded to do some more.😉 Going back in time attended a Johnathon Palmer corporate day, which included reversing a 38ton artic, Volvo from memory. Great fun.😂
Wouldn’t take much persuasion 😂
that was brilliant. you did very well. i'de love to have a go in an artic.. my hubby drove them for years. i bet he'd have loved them new mirrors if he was still here..
Awesome video as usual !!
Your man’s right, I loved going out with my dad when he would be delivering up to 3 John deer tractors on a low loader, happy days in the penfolds lorry. 👍👍👍
Great days driving for you Pete
JCB next ?
Biggest thing I have driven is the Mercedes sprinter van. Very quick vehicle
They are 👍
Passed my class 1 last week after doing class 2 for a few months. Different ball game on the big trucks but really enjoyed the learning process.
I’d love to do my Class 1 👌
@@PetrolPed I'm quite sure that the cost would not be prohibitive, so go ahead and do it.
Never driven one with these mirrors yet but does seem to make things easier
I've driven a couple with them but at night. You see headlights behind you but can't judge what distance they are from you. Give me actual mirrors any day, the cameras seem to be an answer to a question that nobody asked. Well l didn't anyway. 😄
Man that’s what you call an elevated driving position, great fun!!
Oh yes 🙌
So a new channel coming soon for truck reviews? “Diesel Ped” B)
😂😂😂
Spent the day with Ali last week in Tankersley , fantastic bloke and great trucks
He sure is 👍
Brilliant Video Pete well done driving the trucks
Thanks 👍
my son is a hgv driver of double deckers. He has my total respect driving a 46ton 50ft long artic.
No such thing.
@@neilneilorangepeel forgive my ignorance I don't drive it, its bigger than my Fiesta. I think its about 200ft and 70 ton 🤣👍
@@chrisdakin7941 yeah sorry, that was an abrupt reply.

Spoke to son this evening 44 ton fully loaded both decks. 13mtrs long. 5 inch short of 43ft.
Love the video Pete. More truck reviews please
I’d love to 👍
I am a truck driver I love those mirrors.
Wonderful effort... You did very well for a first time my Son... Now try a 16 gear "Crash Box" Like the Ford Transcontinental I used to drive 40 odd years ago... Ohh and it was LHD as well!!! Then reverse the trailer inbetween 2 other trailers with 18 inches either side... Angina has taken my license away or else I would still be driving.... My concern for the video mirrors is they make the "A pillar Blind spot" very big.... Great fun to drive though, that is why you feel like the King of the road.... :-))
Thanks dude 👍
Have to to say if that was your first time backing an artic you did pretty good.
I do at times miss the comfort of the cab-overs there, the ride is much better than north American trucks.
I do suspect you have drove with a trailer on a car or even a caravan, or you was told what way to steer or even this was edited? If not then your a natural I’m impressed.😁
Nice work .. the instructor came out with me when I got my mirrorless Mercedes, it is deffo different to mirrors , and once you get use them , they are great
Dave class Driver Barnsley
That was excellent. Great trucks from MB.
Cheers 👍
Looked great fun, nice to see something a bit different as well 😊
It was such fun 👍
I used to drive a 7.5T for Argos about 15 years ago (even did a "drag" - the extra trailer). Completely blagged the job, no experience at all! Hardest thing was reversing the box onto the bay at the warehouse at end of day. That would be so much easier now with that technology. Enjoyed that, Pete.
Drawbar trailers can be harder to reverse than a class 1 because the pivot point is much further back. I drove a few of them with 7.5 tonne, 17 tonne (the old class 3) and then between about 26~32 tonne (class 2 rigid) depending on what weight the vehicle was plated for, and I always found the draw bars a bit of a 'drag' in comparison to HGV 1:-)
@@ianrkav Pleased it's not just me that struggled!
Numerous 7.5 T drivers who gained it from passing a car test pre 1997 were hit with fines and points over the years for towing in excess of their licence limit. Max combination weight for pre 97 car licence holders was 8250kg which meant if you were driving a 7.5 tonner (even unloaded), then the maximum trailer you could tow was 750kg. A regular sight was an open back 7.5 tonner towing a mini digger (around 2.5t) which clearly put most of these drivers well above their 8250kg licence limit.
@@xj358 Correct. You could tow more with the appropriate licence though. I think 750kg is still the limit for a car licence.
@@ianrkav if you've got a pre 1997 C1E licence limited to a maximum combination weight of 8250kg (code 107), then it all depends on the GVW of the towing vehicle as to what you are then left with to be able to tow. If the towing vehicle is plated at the maximum 7.5 t (which most are) then this leaves just 750kg to be able to tow. Back in the day, we actually had a 7.5 tonner which had been down rated and plated at 6.5 tonnes which allowed a pre 1997 car licence holder to then be able to tow a trailer with a GVW of up to 1750kg.
I drive one of those Mercedes trucks ped with no mirrors they took some getting used to and when you driving them they adjust to keep your trailer in view which i like just bit harder going backwards i tend to open window n poke me head out but thats just my preference great content again ped 👍🏼👏you could be called ped the trucker if you were fully fleged trucker 👍🏼
I’d love to do more 👍
That was brilliant for a first attempt. I drive hgv1 all day long. There is so much new technology now mirror cams are something I've not experienced yet although the company I work for have some in the fleet I have driven them over 40 years now and as the fellow with you said younger drivers will adapt to them easier than someone like me but I dare say I will deal with it when it comes down to it ,like everything else I've experienced over the years .you looked so natural driving one , think you should take the test and add to your licence . Well done ! 😊👍
I’d love to do that 👍
@@PetrolPed Do it, but be prepared to wait upwards of four months for your provisional entitlement due to industrial action at dvla, then another six to eight weeks for your test. It's a bloody disgrace given the current driver shortage crisis.
Keith, my son is class 1 tankers, 25yrs experience, my claim to fame is I taught him to drive, you mention camera mirrors, my son's outfit constantly adding tractor units, recent ones fitted with said cameras, every driver complains of headaches, company considering change of units, driver welfare!,
@@christopheralancawte7584 yes I can say that not all new technology is a good thing the thing. what I find is that after 40 years it's harder to deal with these new ideas.
C'mon Ped, if you had access to lorries like this then why didn't you pull a Jean Claude Van Damme stunt? Lol :P
😂😂😂
Very cool video. I love to see what I do on a daily basis shown to a broad audience. The US and the UK are both facing a problem with attracting and retaining professional drivers. Now that truck was extremely cool especially the cameras instead of outside mirrors. That would have been very helpful several times along the way. The Mercedes Benz Actros, the DAF XF, and the Volvo FH16 are years ahead of their American counterparts, and in my opinion more practical in getting into delivery locations in older parts of the States. That Mercedes though is almost enough to make this guy want to trade in his CDL’s and hop the pond for a HGV license.
Love this 👍
The tech in lorrys today! 😄
Have you stopped smiling yet? 😁
Love having the odd go in trucks, kid at Christmas time.
Nope…I loved doing this 👍
I noticed you didn’t have your Yorkie Bar😂
I’m on a diet 😜
Great video thanks for sharing 👍.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
That's a lovey looking rig the Mercedes ACTROS
Enjoyed this one as I have always had huge respect for HGV drivers who can manoeuvre these huge articulated trucks better than I can park my small car.
😂😂😂
well you can manoeuvre it if there is space for it.. it can't go where all cars can go.. and its do easy to learn, you can learn in week to 2 weeks.. so its really not a big deal. if however you want to be more skilled with it you would need couple of months driving it.. but basic driving so you can get your driving licence, 2 weeks..
Hey Petrol Ped - that is the Fuso eCanter. I got to check out the eCanter at a truck show in Brisbane, Australia last year and I have to say I was very impressed with it
It’s a cool bit of kit 👍
@@PetrolPed it sure is! I have to admit that it looked weird but it grew on me the more I looked at it - the way they have the chassis and batteries set up is amazing

Nice ! your brother will tell you over xmas dinner , how you should have reversed!?🙃🤣
I’m sure he will 😂
Well that was a bit different 😂😂 wasn't it! So interesting! 👌
👍
You lucky man, I would love a go at something like that. 👍
Makes a change to see some lorries. You’ve got all the mod cons in there. I’m liking the camera mirrors. Just booked my Class 2 course/ tests for CPC 3 & 4. I’ve had to do CPC1 as I just missed out on “Grandad” rights by a year 😂, also completed CPC2 so just the practical bits to finish off. I plan on getting some experience on Class 2 and then work my way up to Class 1 and ADR.
👍
The stuff one has to go through now is crazy. When I did my class 1 you only needed a Certificate of Professional Competence if you were a business owner/operator. I went straight from a car licence, which you had to have for at least three years, to class 1. That then covered everything in between.
seriously mate, since the government changed the law late last year and now allow you to go direct to class 1 again (25 years since it was last allowed), don't waste your time and money doing class 2 first. Gaining experience in a rigid gives you zero experience for driving an artic. After a couple of hours learning in an artic with a nice easy automatic gearbox, I'm sure you will realise that they're actually not that hard to drive.
@@xj358 They've changed the law back to the original? I got my class 1 direct from a car licence and it wasn't that difficult.
I suppose they've changed it back because there aren't enough Class 1 drivers coming through with the time and expense.
Love your enthusiasm. Another great video. What's next? Busses or tractors?
I’ve already done a really big tractor 😜👍
ruclips.net/video/cWIOCx1Nkj4/видео.html
@@PetrolPed Thanks for that one. Lots of memories. My uncle, now in his 80s, worked for Brittain's and may have designed some of the toys you played with. I learned to drive a tractor several years before I was old enough to get a car licence and used to help my dad at weekends and during the school summer holidays. Nothing that big though - very old (even then) Fordson Major.
passed my class 1 in 1976, I have not driven HGV since 1992, trucks have altered so much since then, use to love reversing, mind you a lot of drivers cant reverse there car, not alone an artic😄😄
Having worked in the continental haulage sector, I've always had a ton of respect for truckers. The largest truck I've driven was a 7.5ton when you could drive on the so-called “grandad rights”
Yep. I’m old enough for that too 😜
Although I vaguely remember that I've reversed a 17tonner on the yard a few times, under supervision of course!!

Good evening petrol Ped hope you are doing well always looking forward to your videos they are absolutely brilliant seven ton truck when the guy said it was clean what about the batteries how long do they last because Volvo did a study on the XC 40 petrol and electric and two game back in carbon dioxide in the air you would have to do 124,000 miles just wondering do you think the Diesel hybrid with come I think the mirrors (cameras) 7% MPG improvement brilliant video thanks you so much brilliant video Petrol ped
Very different video Peter I wonder what you will drive next👍👍👍🚘🚘🚘😁😁😁

Definitely an interesting in info video!!
👍
I drive class 1 and those mirror less trucks not bad if it's dark that's another story soon get used to them press end of stark and power modes enabled and they tend to hold gear longer so you can get up to speed definitely improved from old version as gearbox was rubbish lol
Looked loads of fun in a controlled environment, but I wouldn't fancy it on the public roads!!
Yeah that would be another thing entirely 😳
I just started working for Maritime, we have some of those very Mercs in the yard although on for Trampers right now, we have a couple Volvos and the rest are Scanias, the use of engine/exhaust braking is high in daily use, Maritime also have the green band driving incentive, where you can get bonus's over £1k at the end of the year if you get good scores throughout the year, I don't do bad at the moment with mostly As and Bs and 1 x C because I hadn't turned off the exhaust brake and pressed the gas which give an over rev.
Reversing is hard when you first start as with driving all your life in a static the opposite steering is alien, but it is easy once it clicks and can get into some crazy spaces that don't look like you should be in.
Green band bonus, is that why I only ever see you guys doing 80km/h. 😁
@@medler2110 yeah lol our limit is 52mph, it's a rarity and something to celebrate if I get to overtake anything 😉
In our yard we use Volvos. Our trucks are restricted at 56. We make the same run to Scotland and back, we need 4 hours and 5 mins to go on 56 mph (the same when we return). I am at 55 all the time and I save 25-30 litres of fuel and I need only 5 mins more than other drivers. I also let the truck roll before junctions and I rarely use the brakes. I didn't miss the fuel efficiency bonus last 2 years (£100 every month).
@@chrishar110 It's surprising how little a change does so good and that bonu is so sweet when you get it, exhaust brake as much as possible before braking, cutting the cruise control at the brow of a hill (though the cc tends to do this for you right as you're passing someone grr) and coasting using the E brake to control your speed, happy trucking.
I run the same Merc truck with a plated gross combo weight of 70 tonnes pulling a B Double combination consisting of a 45ft A trailer with a 5th wheel on the back which is pulling a standard 40ft B trailer.
Oh wow 😮
Keep On Trucking! 👍😄
👊
How will it be to drive from eg. Hungary to Sweden with full load and will there be recharge units enough and what about driving on mountains roads ?
Great content! As the owner of a transport company I completely agree with the comments made by the trainer regarding companies not welcoming drivers to bring their youngsters, it is 100% the reason behind the driver shortage. Health and safety has unfortunately ruined a once great industry.
It would be great to see a truck reviewer in the uk as you just simply don’t get them, it’s a very European thing.
Such a shame 😢
@@PetrolPed every child at some point has the dream of being in or driving a truck, which is now squashed until they are of legal age, at that point the dream has passed, schools frown upon any child that has a passion for it as it’s “not a real profession”.
You go to Holland and it’s a completely different story, truckers are viewed as a form of hero, with truck shows seeing thousands out lining motorways taking pictures and videos of passing trucks.
Where as over here we are viewed as second class citizens which are just in the way blocking roads up.
Well done ped excellent driving. 40 ton of water moves around a lot , did you feel it? Another great video thanks. ❤
You could certainly feel the weight 👌
That looks so much easier than I remember. My mate when I lived up North drove Artics and one day he offered me a shot in an Industrial Estate on the public road. He worked the gears and I drove at one point he asked how I thought I was getting on. I replied fine he replied your 60ft trailer is on the pavement. At that point my new career as an HGV driver ended. It was fun while it lasted. Huge respect to all drivers of these beasts of the road.
LOL 😂
I'm English currently living in the USA and on my first road trip, I couldn't believe the trucks here do 80mph all day long, cruising down the interstates, using all lanes. Absolutely insane.
27/5 22 ..& suddenly one will pass you & you'll notice the driver has a huge 10 inch diameter hamburger in one hand noshing on the move !
Great bit of reversing
Thanks 👍
Very nice and interesting 😊👍
Thanks 🙏🏻
Think you should go for your class 1 vlog it
Well done
I’m on it 👍
The electric 7.5T truck is impressive and fantastic to lower the pollution with city centre multidrops. I used to do upto 30 drops on a Friday in Nottingham city, delivering linen etc to hotels and to think of using one of these...wow, just the job.
I did notice the rattles and creaks which I assume are due to the proving ground needing some pot holes sorting out but maybe I only noticed the noise with not hearing and engine, impressive.
As for this whole video, it's right up my street; anything minis or trucks tickles my fancy 😂
In these electric vehicles you can notice all the other noises you can't hear in a diesel truck.
