When to Spay a Female Dog: the true risks and benefits

  • When should you spay a dog and should you spay them at all? there are a lot of people who say the risks of spaying a female dog at any age are too great. What is the truth though? What are the real risks and benefits of spaying your female dog?
The traditional , dogmatic view that all bitches should be spayed at around 6 months of age has more recently been challenge as more studies look into the risks and benefits of our female dogs undergoing this operation. Rather than make the decision easier though, the choice has become more confused. It is not as black and white as some would have you believe.
If you just want my recommendations then I feel that the benefits of being spayed certainly outweigh the potential drawbacks and so all female dogs who are not going to be used for breeding should be spayed.
For small breed dogs I would still recommend spaying at around 6 months old before their first season. For larger breed dogs however, where there is no risk of them becoming pregnant and where they can be successfully managed while on heat, I recommend delaying this operation until they reach 1 year of age or a little older.
Is this the right decision for you? Well, here are the potential benefits and risks of spaying a female dog which you can discuss with your veterinarian to reach a decision you are completely comfortable with.
The first benefit is a reduction in mammary cancer. It is generally well accepted that the earlier a bitch is spayed, the lower it's chance is of getting mammary cancer. It is said that if spayed before their first season a dogs chance of getting this disease is reduced by around 99.5%. If spayed before their second season the risk still falls by about 94% and if before their third season by a respectable 75%
Spaying a bitch at any age will virtually eliminate the risk of pyometra. This is a life-threatening condition that affects 1 in 4 entire females by the age of 10 and generally requires emergency surgery to cure. Even with treatment 5% of dogs will die and without treatment death is an almost certainty.Another very significant disease prevented by spaying.
Video - the emergency pyometra: • The Emergency Pyometra...
Our final major benefit of spaying is an increase in life expectancy. On average it seems that spayed females live on average 26% longer than their entire counterparts
There are still some other benefits of spaying your dog however which include:
    - Preventing uterine and ovarian tumors, although these are very rare
    - Eliminating pregnancy related problems and the risk of cesarian section. These can be fairly common in certain breeds
    - Reducing sexually transmitted diseases such as Brucella and Transmissible Venerial Tumors.
My final benefit of spaying is a benefit to the population as a whole rather than an individual. Every year around 1.5 MILLION animals are killed in US shelters. In Australia an estimated 200,000 animals are killed every year and in the UK this number is around 20,000.
So those are the benefits but what are the side-effects and risks of being spayed and do these risks vary depending on what age a female dog is spayed? Well there are some risks to spaying a female dog and some of these are more serious than others. As for whether these downsides outweigh the benefits, that is up to you.
The risks include incontinence, some ligament injuries, weight gain, some cancers, and finally certain autoimmune diseases.

Thank you so much for this detailed and informative video! We have a 4 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback, and although my husband and I have had dogs throughout our lives, we’ve heard so much conflicting advice recently about spaying that it’s made the decision harder. But your information was so clear that it has helped us come to a definitive conclusion. Thanks again!

Thanks for your kind words and I'm pleased this struck the right balance for you. I'm a bit believer in trying to give out all the information available to help informed decision making. It would be much easier to keep things simple (like many others do) but that tends to massively oversimplify things and focus on individual biases which may not be the right choice for everyone.

Thank you so much for making this short vlog about spaying, I really did think it answered many questions dog owners would have on this subject. I have always been a advocate of early spaying after reading many articles from American veterinarians. Our dog is a Bearded collie who was spayed at 24 weeks, she is 11years old and in great shape. I have just found your vlogs so have some enjoyable time to spend in future.

My family dog Sammie lost her life at 10 years old due to mammary cancer.
The issue was that she escaped the backyard one day and got caught attempting to breed with a random dog, soon after we so our vet told us it would’ve been better to wait to she had her pups to remove the developing mass and that it wasn’t likely to be any danger at all.
As the pups got older, Sam seemed perfectly fine till one day shortly after she appeared to feel much more sluggish and drooling more then she’d normally, so we contacted our vet to make an appointment to figure out what all was happening.
Sadly, overnight something horrible happened and she began vomiting uncontrollably. Within the hour of us scrambling to find local emergency treatment, her breathing got slower and slower till it stopped and she suddenly vomited out blood.
We still never found out what exactly happened and why it appeared so suddenly, it makes me dread it happening to her daughter as well...
So I’m spaying my girl just because I don’t wanna risk anymore poor lives to be lost to such a horrible thing...

Hey, me and my 7 year old labrador train very much and do a lot of sports.
I heard that spaying dogs decrease their energy level, which is totally I‘m against. The only reason I‘d spay my dog is for cancer prevention.
What do you say, would my labrador lose her energy? I like when she‘s really hyped and active. She‘s more of a medium-very energetic dog

I wouldn't expect it to. I think the change people can see is more normally linked to a change from adolescence to adulthood. If you keep the sports up I would expect her to carry on as before. You could also ask other people you train with if their dog is spayed

I’ve never gotten her spayed. Her heats have been more frequent than when she was younger. I’m just not sure if she too old to the spay and if it’s a good idea for her. She’s doing pretty good and healthy as of right now besides elevated liver enzymes. I just don’t want to spay and regret it. The only reason why I want to do it is because of pyometra. Very informative video.
We have a 5 months old pure German Shepherd (Black). Our other two dogs were Shephers/Husky mixes, first one lived to be 13.5 years of age, passed away due to liver cancer. Second one is now 8 years old and doing great, had TPLO surgeries on both knees, recovered to near 100%.
Both dogs were spayed at 6 months and we noticed that by spaying them it kinda calmed them down as as puppies.
This new pure shepherd is so full of energy she is bouncing off the walls, so we were going to spade her like our other dogs, at 6 months but now I am debating waiting to 12-15 months.
Can you please leave a recommendation for us?
    Thank you so much.

May I ask why a spay should not be performed on a dog in season? I've been told that it increases risks of the surgery, but what exactly are the risks and what causes them?
    Thank you!

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  4 года назад +3

The main big risk is bleeding during and after surgery. It may also take a little longer and so increase the small chance of infection or anaesthetic complications. All of these are pretty rare but if there is no big need to spay when in season then there is no harm in waiting untill 3-4 months later

Thank you so much for posting! I found this video from watching your video about false pregnancy. I had taken our pit mix to a fertility specialist, simply to find out whether or not it was actually better to spay, because I had been getting canned simple answers from general vets. Your video echoes things the specialist mentioned, while also adding more detail - and I was waiting until 2-3 years to spay, but now I think I may opt for before 2 years, before her 3rd heat cycle.
If you see these comments - do you have any evidence based opinions about tubal ligation in dogs compared to spay? Ovariectomy before menopause in women can significantly impact mood and anxiety, and while I imagine it's difficult to measure mood and anxiety in dogs, do you know if there's any evidence regarding mood or anxiety changes after ovary removal in dogs?
    Thank you!

We want to do the best for her, and want to protect her in any way we can, so how do we decide? We have the seasons, and dramatic phantom pregnancies, but,I think that there is too much risk in having her spayed. Then I think of Pyometra which then gets me thinking about having it done. @@leonienolan511 Good morning, good to hear from you, and I REALLY know how you are feeling! The simple answer to your question is yes, very reluctantly!! I was in a huge upsetting quandary, and knew that some sort of decision had to be made, but couldn’t do it. I have to admit that I was very much a coward, and am traumatised when animals are unwell, more so when they pass on, so I told my wife it was up to her to decide, and I didn’t want to know! Without my knowledge, she spoke with our very kind and considerate vet, and arranged for our Cockapoo, Tia to be spayed. One morning she said that we had to take Tia to the vet, as she was being spayed We took her, I was beside myself with worry, but our vet came out to our car, sedated Tia ( I could not watch), and took her into the surgery. We left and probably less than two hours later, she had been spayed, was safe, and again, the vet came out to the car, but this time to enquire about how I was feeling. I now don’t regret having it done. I hope that this story will help you make this very difficult decision. Tia is now extremely healthy and a darling in our family. It is so difficult to make that decision, and I would not be the one to encourage it, but a kind vet will help you through it. Perhaps you can do as I did, or perhaps invent another way of dealing with it. I am a 75 year old man, who sheds tears at the slightest thing that an animal suffers from. I am not afraid of saying it or showing it. I now sit back in comfort knowing that our baby is safe. By all means, anybody who is concerned, please ask me. I will do my best to comfort you. I can only wish you well. Life can be difficult, but with animals, it is more difficult than ever. Your reward from animals, their love, cannot be equalled.

I have a female small size shih Tzu (3.5kg) which was rescued early of this year, checked from a few doctors and some estimated her age at 4-5, but some said 7-8. I’m not planning to breed her because she’s too small, and also she has the habit of scratching things at home which I assume she’s marking territory on a daily basis. I read that castration helped to stop them from marking so I’m thinking of spaying her.
But what IF she is really 7-8 years old, is it still recommended to get her spayed? My vet did recommend me to get her spay but I’m worried if there will be risk at her age, like maybe bad reaction to anaesthesia, or slower recovery, and lesser benefit to go thru such surgery.

Great video! What are your thoughts on OSS? If one of the main downsides of not spaying is pyometra, and OSS virtually elimates that, would that change your ending conclusion at all?
I'm also interested as to if it is the hormones that are causing things like those mammary tumors you mentioned, since OSS doesn't affect the hormones to my understanding. And OSS also prevents pregnancy, which also eliminates that particular management issue.
If it helps as a reference point, I'm looking at getting a labrador. And am trying to figure out if I should spay, if so, which type (traditional or OSS) to get and when to do it.
    Thanks in advance!

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  3 года назад

Ovary sparing spay does nothing to reduce pyometra risk as, although there is no big uterus to fill up with pus, a dog can still develop something known as a stump pyometra which can make them just as sick. With regards the risks/benefits of spaying, it is only really the pregnancy benefit that the OSS brings, with none of the potential risks discussed in this video apart from the surgery/anaesthetic risks.

There may be a slight benefit regarding mammary tumors and it will definitely prevent pyometra. If she is otherwise well then the risk of surgery is tiny so definitely something to consider at least talking to your vet about

    • @OurPetsHealth
      @OurPetsHealth  5 лет назад

Hi Rob, waiting this long is fine. I generally recommend spaying 3-4 months after the end of a season to allow the uterus to shrink back down as the blood flow to it increases during a season. That said it is possible to spay a dog during or soon after a heat, generally without any problem. Just give your vet a call and ask what they prefer

The other dog is the pups grandma. She took over and is always licking taking care of the pups , she always growls at the mother of the puppies if she goes near , and growls at us too! She nurses the puppies too that are not hers. So I'm thinking.. do i have to get them spayed? Is it necessary? And if it is why? What are the pros of getting them spayed?

A pitbull is a large dog breed, Large dog breeds generally tend to finish growing around 18 months of age (which is when you should consider spaying, after full growth) so this should be the final stint of growth now at 18 months.
Small dogs tend to stop growing around 6 months, medium dogs like Collies etc at 12 months

    • @OurPetsHealth

Her biggest risk that will be eliminated if you spay her will be pyometra which there is about a 1-in-4 chance of developing by the age of 10. As for the risk of surgery, unless she has any medical problems then her age and breed won't make the procedure any more risky than any other young dog

That's how one of our dogs tator tot got the nick name little tator of terror causes before she was spayed she was a horror biting when you picked her up snapping and nothing we did would detour her her sister we got the year before was the same way. Once they got spayed they calmed down 100% and our little love bugs now. Not saying spaying fixes this in 100% of dogs but in our case it did.

I would totally wait until after she had her first heat to spay her but I also have a male dog at home who is neutered but I’m worried that he will go into crazy panic mating mode when he realizes that she is in heat. Is there any major bad things that could happen to her with her breed if I have her spayed at 6 months to avoid having problems with her and my male dog. Honestly the only reason that I’m worried is that when my neighbor had an intact female dog and she went into heat my male dog went crazy, crying and scratching and barking all night long. Please please please help me!

If your dog is really going to react like he did in the past (assuming he was also castrated then), spaying before her first season seems a reasonable thing to do. The video discusses all of the potential risks and benefits based on timing based on the few breeds there is information on

Our Pets Health I don’t know if this makes a difference but when my male dog had this incident with the neighbors female dog he was not neutered. I just think that his actions now may be unpredictable when it comes to a female in heat.

In that case he shouldn't be hormonally driven and the chance of the same reaction is low - although not zero

Our Pets Health Thanks so much! We have decided that she will be spayed after her first heat just because she is gonna be on the bigger side and we want her to be well and fully developed. Thanks for everything!

Hi! My female toy poodle is 5yrs old and had several heat cycles already. You think I still need to spay her at that age?

Hello, my female whippet is 7 months and 23 days and weighs 10 kg. No sign of first heat yet and would like your advice on whether to Spey her now or after first heat. Worried that if I get her done now, she will develop incontinence issues. A reply would be most appreciated.

Hello! I came across this video and we’re getting our whippet spayed tomorrow at 6 months and was wondering what you ended up deciding? I’m really nervous for her surgery and looking for some comforting stories as I’m so worried about her!

@@zombae634 Hello, I took the advice of vets on RUclips and my own vet. I waited until two months after my whippet Nellie had her first heat to get spayed, which was exactly 1 year and 15 days. There is so much scary advice on the pros and cons on spaying but I am glad I waited. She is absolutely fine now and has had no issues whatsoever. I feel you should wait until she has had her first heat when she will be more mature, but it is your decision. You can buy washable pants for when she is in heat. I used them with sanitary pads inside them, worked great. Hope this is of some help to you.
