      Definitely must immerse yourself in the studio recording of Cemetery Gates. It is truly the crowning achievement of flawlessly composed, skilled, performed, and produced guitar music, especially since it still remains one of the rarest triumphs of ambitious dynamism, synergy, scope, and progressive transitions from every member of the band, and not just a showcase for an epic guitar hero confined to the notion that an epic poem could only have room for one hero.

    Damn this shit makes me feel old. I'm from the DFW metroplex and these guys were basically the house band at a club called Joe's Garage. They originally had a different singer who was more on the hair metal/ Iron Maiden range of singer and then Phil joined the band and the rest is a historical Rock n Roll roller coaster that went from the highest of highs to the toxic break up that ended one of the greatest bands in RnR history to the tragic events that took place on December 8th 2004 in Columbus, Ohio that took the life of one of the greatest most influential guitarist in Metal history. RIP Dimebag and Vinnie Paul. 2 brothers who helped form (imho)the greatest Heavy Metal band to ever come from Texas and one of the best rock bands of all time

      You’re a lucky bastard if you got to see them at Joe’s Garage. I’ve heard 100s of stories about that place. I didn’t even know who Pantera was until they started getting radio play on KEGL but I was only 11-12 years old though. Saw them twice in concert in 98 or 99 with Anthrax and Coal Chamber and then again in 2000 I think with Black Sabbath. Both great shows. No pit at the Sabbath concert though. It was weird but still an awesome show.

    "It's almost angry...." It's actually Phil Anselmo's first cry for help regarding his back issues and his growing painkiller addiction.
    This song started as just a riff Dime and the guys would riff on in soundcheck.
    "Walk" and "Cowboys from Hell" are good statements of intent, "Fucking Hostile" and "5 Minutes Alone" are good songs about just aggression, "Cemetery Gates" is Phil Anselmo's vocal showcase, and "The Art of Shredding" is the first song they wrote for the Cowboys from Hell album.

    One of the baddest groove metal songs of all time. Doesnt get any better than that blues infused metal that dimebag and brother vinnie Paul laid down for us. RIP to the Abbott brothers. There's so much groove in Pantera it's ridiculous! Best band ever!
    Rex Brown has to be the most underrated bass player there is. He's so great.
    And that tap? It's a natural harmonic tapped from a octave on the same string he has plugged a note.

  • @tomhier313
    @tomhier313 3 года назад +11

    Revolution is My Name by these guys would be right up your alley. Musically it's great, the video is fun and Vinnie's drumming is simple yet technical. 5 minutes alone is also a great one. You really can't go wrong when it comes to Pantera 🤘

  • @spoggy912
    @spoggy912 3 года назад +3

    That “tap” dime bag did on his guitar can be used to make the squeal sound you hear the guitar make! It’s called natural harmonics on guitar!

    • @Easy_Skanking
      @Easy_Skanking 3 года назад +1

      The correct terminology for what Dime did was "tapped harmonics". His left hand is fretting a note lower on the guitar neck and he taps a fret higher on the fretted string that is in the overtone series and the harmonic rings out. "Natural harmonics" are played when the fret hand fingers are lightly placed on a string and the pick hand picks that string. The fret hand fingers are lifted almost immediately and lets the harmonic ring on the open string.
      Another technique Dime uses is the "pinch harmonic" aka squealies. Zakk Wylde uses these almost to the point of nausea. LOL That is generated from the pick hand with part of the thumb, most commonly, or the index finger, rarely. Pinch harmonics can by used with fretted notes or open strings and can be sounded throughout the overtone series all up and down the strings.
      One of Dimes favorites was what he used in the ending of "Domination". Dime depressed the whammy bar letting the strings go slack and would do a controlled release of it while letting a finger lightly touch a string, usually right around the second fret, removing the finger, and then doing dives and/or pull ups on the whammy bar.
      Some other types of harmonics are plucked harmonics plus hammer-on and pull-off harmonics.
