As a cancer survivor and a person who was misdiagnosed for years. I lived for years in pain, and once found, not one person apologized. That would be a good start.
Thank you... It's the elephant in the room most often...as a care provider, a friend, a daughter of mom with cancer currently and a nurse for a many along this road of life it's a blessing and curse but I wouldn't change it, dying with dignity and peace.... priceless.
So beautifully said and articulated Rob. Embracing death like this makes us appreciate life even more. Easy to see how you got a standing ovation. It was very moving and enlighteneing.
Dr. Rob, you are the doctor everyone is hoping for. You are kind and you listen, I talked to you in the beginning of this year, so grateful for you and for your kindness. ❤️
Thank you for a beautiful talk and message of asking what matters to patients, families and caregivers, especially during those moments of death and dying.
Rob, once again you bring me to tears. Your voice and message is so important, and as I told you- I thought of your talk while I was in ICU last month. It was an honor and a privalage to share the stage with you.
Thanks for such an thoughtful and inspiring talk. Talking about death and dying is such a hard thing to do, but your words really underscore why it is such such an important part of the doctor/ patient relationship. Congrats on a fabulous TED talk.
amazing talk, Rob. you've touched on the essence of what it takes to be a healthcare professional in difficult situations. Your intention is clear and grand. I could only wish that all our healthcare professionals work with the same degree of compassion and care for their patients. Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts with us. You are an amazing human being.
So nicely said.Even till today i am not able to speak normally about my partners death.Really dnt know what is there in the other side but rather the sudden death of someone we love makes us paralysed completely.
Just recently I was talking to my mom and I asked how my grandmother (her mom) had passed. She told me she had a stroke in her sleep and went very peacefully. Then she says "that's how I want to go." It kind of caught me off guard but she is 67 now so I suppose it's natural to think that way when you get older. I really do hope she goes peacefully tho. I've seen others go through years of pain before they pass and I wouldn't wish that on anyone
Thank you for this brilliant presentation. Everyone will need to face death one day so no one should fear or hesitate to talk about it. The amount of time we spend on this earth is a privilege and not a guarantee.
To the person who is reading this comment, its okay, its alright to feel lonely sometimes, if you are going through tough times, keep pushing through, but never give up, i wish you great success in health, love and happiness!
As a caregiver most all my life i agree with you Kathleen. I just wish i knew the right words to say to them since my face will be one of the last they see and my voice the last they hear. But many of them lost their hearing a long time ago so that makes it hard to communicate to them. My late husband was unresponsive to words in his last days .. so one day i was quietly holding his hand and gently stroking his arm. . He suddenly spoke out loud & clear "will you PLEASE STOP rubbing my arm!!" .. ummm okay. 😳 It was the last thing he said to me before he passed.

Death is an inevitable and an important part of all our lives and talking about it should be as normal as talking about breathing, eating, bathing etc . As Albert Camus said, Living is keeping the absurd alive. Keeping it alive is above all contemplating it”. This is not an ordinary thing to do, because although most people think about their death from time to time, they think about it vaguely, remotely, and don't accept it into their lives as an essential part of their existence.
Very true.. But the thing that shocks me most, is the fact that except in Switzerland and Holland, even in the Western world, no one is allowed to end his life in a dignified way, even in the case of very painful terminal illnesses ... This is not civilization .. It is barbarism
To me, Death is a very important fact that I try always to be aware of. It reminds the limitedness of life and how it's very much crucial to spend time for meaningful things that really matter.

When people accept and face their mortality they are able to appreciate their living. Life is a gift, rare and wonderful. Be thankful for the gift. Older people are more likely to accept their mortality because they have had a lifetime of experiences. For younger people, dying can be a tragedy. They could feel cheated that they have not had their full measure. I have no answer for this, just the weak suggestion that they did have some life. All of us can only play with the hand we are dealt. Be happy.
If you want to die in your sleep 😴 👀 well only 1% of the World population, does that, and it’s because an essential organ in the body quit, at night; but they also had to exist through diabetes ( blindness, amputation, poor wound healing) before their last and fatal, exhale 😮💨 Most people’s death will probably be physically and/or emotionally, painful 🖤 and preparation medicine *is* *better* than a cure 🩺

For some who die a peaceful death with loved ones with them .. it is a blessing.
