When do we get more no dumb questions?
www.nodumbquestions.fm is where you'll find it!
does your channel name mean don't ask dumb question?
LGD Jackal you blocked me on snapchat:(
can make video about vantablack
Hey guys, love your show. Manu Prakash invented a disposable microscope. I'm giving you the link to the Ted talk where he explains it. They got the cost per microscope down to around less than a dollar. Maybe you could take them with you to give to the healthcare workers you meet. It detects Malaria
Random malaria fact: You can cure late-stage syphilis by infecting people with malaria, since the syphilis bacteria can't handle the high fevers. This was actually used a treatment before the discovery of antibiotics. So as weird as it sounds, malaria, one of the deadliest human diseases, has saved lives.
I can't think of the name of the treatment, but there was a doctor a long time ago who administered diseases/bacteria to induce a fever and immune response to fight cancer, with much success, but of course he is completely unheard of. Cruxley's Cocktail or something... it had a catchy name. Sorry I can't remember or find the post. Maybe someone else will know.
jameswoll Was it William Coley? He created something called "Coley's toxins", which was a combination of Streptococcus pyogenes and Serratia marcescens that he used to provoke an immune response in people with cancer. That sounds like what you were talking about.
Stuart Redman That was it! Thanks! Gotta love the internet! Yeah, I think that's some really important work that we never hear about. Coley's toxins. Fascinating stuff. I would encourage people to look into it and hear about the vast amount of people he worked with.
jameswoll No problem! I really like medical mysteries and stuff like that. Very interesting!
It is also pretty weird how sickle cell anemia provides an advantage against malaria.
omg that beard
It's shameful. That's the closest thing to a beard I've ever had.
SmarterEveryDay hey are those parts for the rocket project illegal in Africa ?
SmarterEveryDay You've gotta bring out your inner David Crowder! lol
That beard makes you look badass man :)
It's not literally shameful, but in the figuratively sense it's seriously a shame that we'll never see you with with a big bushy beard.
1:32 It's starting to look like Destin is a drugdealer
FragMast I got verified on G+
He's more of a smuggler
Lucas van Osenbruggen okay?
More like a rocket dealer, lol
"Teaching meth and science"??? XD
Man this channel is RUclipss Top 10, its like a treasure. Everytime i watch a video i learn more than i do from 1000 other youtube videos
true
i suppose you dont know about the channel "Vsauce" as yet.
Check out Veritasium, Vsauce, and CGPGrey
Sauce lol true that
Vsauce tends to be more detailed and goes off topic very easily. I find smarter every day easier to understand and comprehend. Vsauce isn't for the general public, only for those really interested in science.
You smuggled rockets in to an African country? thats fine :)
Destin: White Collar Arms Dealer
Nope, just mailed them.
Fabian H. All in the name of science
A+ opsec no escrow
you can mail black powder thats contained inside those model rocket motors? lmao i had no idea lol
Destin, how about a video focusing on "the world getting better"? Crime rates over decades, disease, infant mortality, world poverty, polio eradication, smallpox eradication, etc? I think it would be a popular video, and even more importantly help people feel a little more hopeful. It's been a rough couple years for the first world, but if you look at humanity in aggregate you get a clear picture of an improving world.
You could also do a video on things that need more focus like climate change, but that's "been done". The positive side hasn't really been looked at in popular media!
Yeah I think it is important that what good has been done is also shown off to show that we can make the work better if we try.
If you're interested you can read The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined by Steven Pinker about the decrease of violence in the world since the beginning of civilization and the advancement and moral innovations that allowed that.
Destin is doing a wonderful job helping those he helps. Why do you have to nitpick over what he chooses to highlight? Seriously...
I just worry about overpopulation.
Spike Kastleman so your point is to get malaria yourselves so you can die and then you help os all avoiding that problem of overpopulation - or alternatively you want others to die of malaria instead of you? seriously - where is the logic in that? No we should do more to avoid corruption so we could all contribute to a sustainable life for all who share the same oxygen on our planet.
Wait so you can just buy malaria??
IKR
7necromancer BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA 😈😈😈😈
Thanks for the idea
I think the slides are a weakened form of the virus. Something not dangerous
These are samples for educational purposes. You would have a hard time extracting the disease from these to create something that is capable to infect someone, but technically, yes you can just buy malaria.
I think he just showed us a crime
What? I only saw some "rocket stuff" properly saved on a book-looking case ;)
OMG call the police to the internet!
he also filmed while driving on the highway
No he was allowed to send it, he just wanted to be sure that it will actually arrive and not get "lost" ;)
the mystery eggs you saw were tadpoles :)
yep. I was demonstrating my ignorance
All I saw was my triggered trypophobia
lol
YES
Hey Goohz
I read the entire letter. Wow, I had no idea the impact Bill, Malinda and Warren are having. The chart at the end that shows how Polio has been crushed is AWESOME! Thank you Destin, for sharing this.
This is a video like Casey Neistat would do, but this is 10x less pretentious.
It's over 9000x less pretentious!
Dylan Pritchard less scary-facey too. I don't mean to comment on people's physical appearance, but Casey scares me a lot. I just get a weird feeling
Casey is a film maker, meaning his mentality is to make things look slick, pretty and exciting, with the goal to entertain. Destin on the other hand aims to educate, so you shouldn't compare the two channels. Anyway, i'm pretty sure Destin and Casey are friends in real life.
I love this. I was a volunteer in Senegal when you posted this video!
So are we just gonna ignore the rocket smuggling? Yes? ok.
It's not "smuggling". There probably isn't a local supply so he bought some along in a book-like case so they wouldn't be damaged during shipping.
Oh right, right. My bad just didn't know how to word it properly.
if it makes one child interested in math and science, yes, ignore it. a few ounces of blackpowder never hurt anybody. [citation needed]
Shouldn't you fully disclose the risks you are adding to your fellow travelers and the carrier? If I were told that another passenger had compressed gas cylinders or chemical rocket motors in his pocket, I might want to reduce my risk of explosion or fire hazard by not sharing that car ride. At minimum, I should be allowed to know of any unusual risks. We have all seen videos of lithium battery fires by now, and the hazard of several rocket motors, in an unshielded, flammable box (probably tucked into flammable packing in an inaccessible luggage bay) is similar to a battery fire. A good question for Destin might be what would you do if something went wrong with your special cargo at 35,000 feet?
Ed Price you must be fun at parties.
btw. black powder rocket motors are perfectly save. you would somehow have to get sparks or fire into the nozzle hole. other than that there is no chance of self ignition.
But did you know that in those countries with high chances to get malaria, there are also a lot of people who have a disease called sickle-cell anaemia. That is a blood disease which leads to an abnormality in hemoglobin, but those people are also imune to malaria.
alemymy1 Yes, you just coppied someone else's comment. good job.
oh I'm sorry I didn't see that someone else wrote that already. I actually learned that in my Biology class.
+blyssed Ofc, No two people could ever know the same thing. o.O
alemymy1 Its funny how life saving sickle cell can be. But when you're in a place like america it's pretty useless/dangerous to have it.
Eugena Cooney Yeah the diseased blood cells can't transport enough oxigen, but as soon as you aren't too phisically active and always get enough oxigen from your enviroment the healthy cells keep you alive. Still the life expectancy is only about 40 - 60 years.
As a mosquito control technician I can tell you mosquitoes are by far the greatest killer of mankind. Slight correction to your video destin. Males and female mosquitoes both seek flowers for their primary food source, however females only find a blood meal after having mates with a male. They need the protein to lay the eggs. Not whenever they can. Most people don’t know control districts even exist here in California. We know we are doing a good job when we don’t make the news. Love you videos keep up the great work
I know this is old and you may not see tjis, but...whats the current spray used, and how do you avoid affecting pollinators?
@@RICDirector when we treat adult mosquitoes we call it fogging. What it is actually is a very fine mist most droplet sizes between 5-30 microns we use a product called mgk or evergreen. You’ll find it under different names same stuff. And since this is a pesticide that is indiscriminate on what it kills we are very careful not to use it when pollinators are active. Basically there are a number of things that have to go right for us to use it. 1 an inversion layer, this helps the chemical stay suspended in the air an float right about knee high. 2 a very slight wind 2-3 mph is best. Nothing over 10 ever. And last but not least we do this very early in the morning around 4-5 am. When mosquitoes are active but bees are not. We also look around for bee hives and if there are bee hives nearby we don’t fog. We try and get them when they are in a larvae stage in the water much more targeted and better control all around.
I feel blessed when people like you spread knowledge and awareness of hard issues. Thank you!
Destin, thank you for making these awesome, uplifting videos. With so much going wrong in the world, it's so important to have people like you pointing out the good stuff!
I really dont know why people would down vote these kinds of videos, thank you Destin for sharing info about malaria.
+
I considered voting down. The channel is called getting smarter (and we didn't learn anything new). The title of the video implies we will learn why some people get malaria and some don't... he didn't even touch that subject at all.
Ware Florida didn't he say a person can get infected if that person got bitten by a female mosquito? 3:20 mark. Well that's what I learned from him, maybe he didn't get bit by a female mosquito so that's why he didn't get malaria
ware florida you are so idiotic
Exactly, and this channel isn't helping my issue. haha
This is awesome! Thanks for this video!
Wow! Glad I got your video in my sub box finally. Great video content and I'm enjoying the podcast thus far ;).
gj dustin a big fan from saudi arabia
how often are y'all trying to release your podcast, I've already listened to all of them and you left me wanting more! keep up the awesome work. A longtime fan from Colorado.
1:30 “I smuggled explosives internationally”
I thought it was Ethan from h3h3 doing his cough thing in the thumbnail
I _casually_ got sponsored by Bill and Melinda Gates, and _casually_ went to Africa and my sister _casually_ got Malaria.
...and it was all good fun too.
What an enjoyable read. Thanks to you and the Gates Foundation for making this available. I reposted it myself hoping my friends will enjoy it as much as I did.
Hey Destin, I just happened across your channel a couple of weeks ago. I love it. My question is what is that blinky remote control looking thing on the wall behind you?
Bill and Melinda Gates… that aged well lol
we need more good people like Destin in this world!
Awesome vid! I would love to see one on how sickle cell and malaria are intertwined!
This was so perfectly timed for me! I had just been reading about malaria in my high school biology class! Really interesting video!
I love the Bible verse at the end keep going with that:)
Today I figured out and learnt how to read the time on your very cool clock at the back.
Hey Dustin, recently found your channel and loving it. I am originally from The Gambia and was surprised you went there with the Peace Corps. I've had my own bouts with malaria growing up so it can relate to what your sister went through. Keep up the good work.
always love your videos! thank you for sharing the Gate's letter
when you said Steve-o i thought of jackass Steve-o and i was really confused
viljar amdal I thought steveo1kinevo
12:10 on the clock ))
Man this channel is full of so much win. Learn interesting things in a positive and uplifting way. I've shown some of your videos to my kids (5yrs & 4yrs) and they love them, too. More of the internet needs to be like Destin.
Love your videos Destin. Thanks for another good one.
Awesome collab
i can tell the time

This is the best channel on RUclips, hands down
So Destin, is this video at midnight or noon?
I got malaria when I turned 1, almost died... Good times Good times
does that mean you are immune to it now?
Destin
You are an amazing guy
My hero

I just need to say that I really really enjoy watching your videos! Keep on going!!
ty for all dat work u put in the videos u make! keep them coming. just one of those who clicked dat "bell button".
DESTIN! How often will you be adding more "No dumb questions" podcasts? Is there a set time in-between the uploads, or will you be uploading randomly?
Every 2 weeks we are thinking
Thanks for the reply; I'm looking forward to the others.
I'm still laughing at the "OH MY GOD!! THERES WATER DRIPPING FROM THE ICE!" segment
Too good haha.
Your "grand vision" of reducing the death toll of malaria to 0 could be a possibility in the next couple years due to CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, which has been used to genetically modify mosquitoes in a way that renders them incapable of carrying the active parasite. A modification in just 1% of the world's mosquito population could result in ALL mosquitoes being malaria-repellent in just 1 year. Of course there are a lot of ethical concerns when it comes to editing an entire species, but food for thought.
Natesticle has this not been done already to make mosquitoes only breed male mosquitoes with the intention that they die out over a few generations and then BOOM the zirka virus was created I mean introduced I mean patented by some Rothschild bank many years ago and now blaming mosquitoes for something disgustingly man made. you think the prats dealing with the money really think about people lives?
@@serksta1 Zika virus was discovered in monkies in the '40s, and in humans in the '50s. 30 yrs before the first GMod animal. And, in contrast to your anti-science, stupider-every-day conspiracy theory, research with a genetically modified mosquito is resulting in 90% decrease in population of Zika carriers.
1:31 dat smuggling tho
Dear Destin, please upload more videos😂😂
*_G E N E R I C E A R L Y J O K E_*
That's a funny title
hahahahahahhaahhahaahhaahahahahahhhahaahahahahahah

lol
You and your family are awesome. Seriously.
So happy we discovered your channel, how interesting! Really great stuff!
Hey Destin i think you might wanna rephrase that "world is getting better" comment lol
Why? If you ignore covid (that will hopefully be mostly over in year), it id getting better
“The world is getting better”
People watching this in 2020
Exactly we need to get better like this with corona
@@lordheadass7795 Depends on where you are at, in New Zealand and Australia, for instance, they followed Science and largely eliminated Covid while in America we let a Failed Reality TV Star who aligned with anti-science religious zealots cause the highest infection rate in the Western World.
This is where its important to see there can be bible thumpers like Destin who follow Science and keep religion in perspective vs the new age morons who think the earth is 6k years old.
Hey Destin, curious if either you or your sister took the prophylaxis meds during and after the trip? BTW I oversee Parasitology for Los Angeles County Public Health Laboratory where all the Malaria confirmatory testing is performed for travelers to endemic regions.
loving all your videos Destin keep up the good work!
Title: weird flex... but ok.
5:20 Tripeophobia TRIGGERED.
Always awesome, keep it up Destin
Hey Destin, where can I get that clock you have hanging next to that map in your office?
When you realize that "Gold digger prank" video has more views than this one, there is something wrong with today's generation.
PLEASE !!!
Talk about MMS(chlorine dioxide) and Jim Humble ! thx ^^
PS: Is highly related to the Malaria(Cure) !
hey Destin, the piranha in your shelf is from Peru?
Thank you, nice to see a video like this, I got diagnosed with malaria after getting deployed to South Korea. Had horrible symptoms but the treatment was extremely easy and I was back to 100% in about a weeks time.
cool
cool
Don't draw lines between data points unless you are confident the line is an accurate enough approximation of the true underlying function.
Your family is so special and amazing, you guys are a real inspiration! :)
thank you for teaching that everybody is interconnected
Who else just loves to read the end verses of each video I know I read them everytime
Trypophobia warning
@ 5:52 . . . so true.
I love your channel! Thanks for doing this, it really makes the world a better place!
try not to link Wikipedia websites in the Get smarter section.
Thanks for posting this, dude! I learned a lot and as mother of 4, I feel a bit more hopeful come summer this year!
3:49 why is the school name blurred?
Destin, would love to see you make a video about the link between Malaria & Sickle Cell.
I swear i've seen you. Have you visited any churches in Birmingham? Or given any talks at UA in the past 5 years (i'm also mechanical engineer)?
Can you make a video on the difference between color in the sense of light waves versus in the sense of mixing paints? I don't see any good videos lately and I would love some clarification. Thanks!
where can i buy one of this clock?
Hey Destin! Great video, like always of course :) Do you have a DSLR? Because at the shots you're talking to the camera in your room I noticed the focusing of the lens. Maybe try to focus manually to avoid the weird in and out zooming :)
Yes I do, and yes it's focusing. This is how I prefer to do it.
My auntie contracted malaria when she was living in Kenya, and survived to tell the tale. Another excellent video, keep up the brilliant work!
Dude you’re really inspirational. Well done keep it up
what animation software did you use?
Please, do a video about the physics of Skiing, like the "cold hard science" ones about ice skating etc. Maybe in advance to the 2018 Winter Olympics?
Interesting! Watched during the pandemic 2020.
Wow this hit close to home my friend! I am sending this from a country you flew over. I take malaria prophylaxis daily, I have trouble with mosquito larva getting in water left out side, and I just talked to two peace corps folks today! I have lived here my entire life and have never gotten malaria but, I know tons of people who do. Heck my grandma got it in her bone marrow. (apparently that's rare) I appreciate you drawing attention to this. Everyone went crazy about Ebola, but malaria kills way more than Ebola ever did yearly. So far I have been protected. But the thousands of people dying of malaria all the time should not be ignored.
So was the intro to this filmed at 2:27?
When I started my medical education in 1997 we were told that Malaria is by far the most problematic infectious disease worldwide with 500-700 million infections and reinfections and a 15-17 million death toll per year. Much has been achieved since then. Thanks for raising conciousness about many different areas apart from what´s in the news everyday.
Blessings to both of you guys for making this world a better place.
@SmarterEveryDay Destin, you and your sister are awesome people! Thanks for everything you do, and thanks for bringing the to the masses the "Smarter Every Day" VLog!
Ilove the efforts that the gates family are making. Thank you for promoting a great cause.
was listening to smarter everyday soundtrack right when this video was uploaded
Since you told us how to read that clock I keep staring at it 😂
how did you get malaria samples into US?
Hey Destin. I saw couple of your videos lately. You're cool man!
Destin, you're such an awesome person!
