I wanted to make a video about working together, education and computer science. I really love the fact that there were a ton of different opinions and political viewpoints in this room and yet everyone worked together to do something good. Ivanka is super smart and nice and we had a really fun off camera conversation about balancing parenting and work.
3 more things:
1. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
2. Get coding in your schools by using this link: code.org/yourschool
3. If you choose to read the comments, be nice!
SmarterEveryDay the future will be that computer science majors will be very, very under paid. You teach it in schools and it becomes a normal expected thing. Wages will go down for it in the next twenty years.
It's a good and bad thing.
Google search, h1b visa fraud in tech.... you should learn these people won't find jobs, please do a release on the massive amount of h1b visa fraud, we are losing thousands of jobs, tons of articles about it in the tech industry! Also, women do apply less, especially minority women -- I went to tech colleges, most of the people applying to learn are nerdy white males, that's who pays to learn about tech, it's just reality, my friend. I lived it. Women and minorities are least of the worries in tech, h1b visa fraud FAR worse, it effects all our diverse tech jobs, not just men! Please research h1b tech visa fraud every one, it's thousands of people that cannot pay their student loans, our biggest national debt! Wake up, America! Please wake up... this type of funding is why we have Trump, look at the FULL picture.
Alright I am just going to say it is morally wrong to cut funding for education, her party, her administration, is MASSIVELY cutting funding for underprivileged kids. It is vitally important to have the funds to be able to actually have a healthy public school for every student, and when you are taking money from starving children, there is nothing more reprehensible. This is a needle in a haystack, comparatively it will only affect particular communities, and not always the ones who need it the most. We need better public schools, funding for the arts, and a government that will actually support science, by A believing in climate change so we have a world to pass down to our kids, and B funding Organizations like NASA and the CDC, and C ACTUALLY funding public schools around the country. I'm not against what they are doing, but this video acts like propaganda making it seem like science is actually a focus of this administration, which it isn't. This is not enough, and it makes it seem like their policies care, which they don't. It's Dangerous, and people's lives are on the line. Just take a look at the Trump's budget proposal, it is making deep cuts into education, this is dangerous to make it seem like they are helping.
Awesome job! You always amaze me as to where you take us on adventures, and I always come away smarter, every day! Thank you for being willing to not only see the positive, but to embrace it with joy. I hope you get to go to Mars one day. I can't think of anyone who would absorb it more fully and pass it back with enthusiasm to all of us still on Earth through RUclips! I think I was in-between you and your sister in my schooling. I double majored in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Now there's the ticket..... :)
Anyway you can make the background not constantly go in and out of focus? It makes it really hard for me to watch the monologue in the beginning.
"A goal without a plan is just a wish".
"a plan without action is just a dream".
lol, *Eye One* they are just representing it badly, to be honest, I feel like some do it to have some kind of advantage while other are *purely good (naive)* sadly in this era like all the other ones the same issue occurs which is that both sides are just viewed *equally evil*.
R.I.P humans don't think they will ever make it work because they are humans.
Also, there is a confusion between the feeling of equality and actual real equality. Many just wanna create that feeling of equality by removing other's rights.
Again same issues as the older era are repeating but ain't no one gotta look at them because there was *no iPhone back then* so they were stupid. *clap clap clap* Yeah, great job smart people.
+Eye Ore How is multiculturalism and diversity a lie or evil?
The lie that is oft repeated becomes the truth aka "diversity is our strength". No proof of this is ever given, just repeated ad nauseum.
In my neighbouring country Sweden, you can go and see just how "strong " Sweden has become from allowing diversity, the are learning the hard way.
Sounds like the foreign policies and overseas wars that the US is spending $500 x 100 000 000 of taxpayers money on every year on. Dumber everyday.

Hi Ben, I think that people like you and Dustin are really contributing a lot to steer young minds in the right direction, and I want to thank you for that. And yes, if we can truly harness the power of technology (i.e if every kid learns to code) we could see real solutions to global problems (distributed manufacturing, smart grid, post scarcity economies) in the coming future.
Btw I'm watching from Sri Lanka, and I'm a teacher myself (totally overqualified, ME degree). Dustin's video reaffirmed my career choice... the future matters, and it's in the hands of kids who will code for humanity.
If her last name was Hitler, would Destin's mindless evil be clearer to you? he could easily have omitted any mention of Trump in this video where he was supposedly 'invited' by google. Yet he chose to use this video to gloss over the unmitigated disaster that is the Trump administration. And you praised him for it.
Do we agree corporations should be contributing this much every year, by paying their fair share in taxes? This country is at war with itself, and you are applauding someone who claims to be sitting on the sidelines?
Destin is the kind of guy that deserves his own college. I absolutely love how he is just so passionate about learning and so genuine with his views on life. I always say I’m willing to learn but he is the true definition.
2017: private companies are donating millions to get coding into schools.
2020: no schools.
Ironically, technology is the way they go to school, now.
@ubervation ah so you have learned about school zone segregation in the U.S.
You sure hit the head of the nail with this prediction.
Follow the money - where'd it go? in politicians and school administrators pockets.
@@Talisman-tb6vw it went to critical race training courses instead
I wanted to get into computer science in Elementary school back in 1997 but hated math. My teachers told me it was hard and I had to be good at math so I was discouraged from trying. When I got into Highschool they had a computer science course I wanted to get into... I was told it was an extremely difficult course and I had to be good at math so I was discouraged. After graduating college I decided to learn how to code and have enjoyed every second of it since then. That enjoyment of programming spawned my new love for math. I wish I had ignored everyone who told me it was "hard" and just went for it.
Lol, I have so scarcely used real math in my programs, and I've made some dang good programs. Most "math" people in the current day aren't even logical thinkers, they just know when to use what equations *(not* directed at real math people!).
Many brilliant minds are turned off to coding due to "math" not because the "math" is too hard, but how it is taught. Every math class that I had ever been in had simply been doing equations for the sake of doing them. Never to actually solve a problem. When I would ask questions, I would not be encouraged to look for answers, rather to just memorize it because "that's just how it is." The minds that will be best at coding are those that are constantly looking for solutions, that are driven by problem solving, and quite frankly are bored to death in a traditional classroom setting when mathematics is being taught.
Glenn Lopez I know how it feels :(
they say that... but the truth is, you learn and get to love math from programming LOL. because you get to use maths in real world...

I hope you learned that people just like to run there mouths when they actually have no idea what their talking about...happens everywhere all the time
I'm sure you've said it somewhere already, Destin but just to make sure no one misses it:
People agree on far more issues than we disagree on.
@jay Yeah? Well, I tried to be civil but if you can't come to reason then prepare for war!

10 years ago? yes. today? negative.
@@chasemc69 Naw, that's all propaganda bullshit, like "Hillary is way ahead in the poles". Unfortunately it does work on some people and changes their views. The old "everyone else is doing it, I guess I should too". They still have a long way to go before they turn us all into degenerates. Most of us still have the common sense that brings us to the point of agreeing on most things even though the media tries to make it look like the reverse is true.
DISCLAIMER: Please, no one assume that because I used the "Hillary" reference, that it reflects anything about my political views. That would be the exact thing Destin's warning us about.
I think people agree on anything in general more than disagree. If something is well presented, "we" automatically assume it is right and not question it. Whether it is news, studies, your friends opinion, or what you read online, the little we actually know about anything, and most of what we read or hear is probably bs in some degree.
True. In reality, both sides want to resolve the same issues. They just have different ideas to solve them. It's just so tribal now, they both sides paint the other as dumb, ill informed and evil, instead of realizing there's such a thing as different perspectives.

Yeah it drove me nuts how many news casters basically called me racist for grudgingly voting for someone who I disliked because I disliked them less than someone they thought was perfect in every way.
Well, as a poor white kid from the suburbs, I have to ask why this is "unarguably" a good thing.
@Greg Fakerson my sides are in orbit right now
>She's not perfect
>She's the most qualified candidate in history
You know, stuff like this happens all the time. It's really sad that the media doesn't cover stuff like this.
They can't. That would mean the left would have to disagree with democrats. The right would have to disagree with Trump. The left would have to agree some good things have come out of the current administration. The right would have to agree that some good things came out of the Obama administration. The left and right don't want grey areas. If you're on one side, you're supposed to stay there. You certainly can't be understanding of both sides on any issue. That's just not acceptable. You have to play for your team...period.
Unfortunately, the media partly does this because we as people like to play for a team, as well. We like to pick a side. It makes us feel like we belong. We'll often even stay with our team when they let us down and do things we don't like. I saw this during Obama's presidency. When he messed up, nobody on the left would address it, often pretending it didn't happen unless forced to talk about it. I see this now in the current presidency. When he messes up, nobody on the right will address it, often pretending it didn't happen unless forced to talk about it. I won't argue about which was worse...it doesn't matter.
Winston Churchill once said, "Some people will abandon their party for their principles. Most people will abandon their principles for their party." (It's a slight paraphrase because I did it from memory, but it was pretty close to that.)
Wade,
While current politics are highly polarized and the media are a major contributing factor that doesn’t mean that the best way forward is always to meet in the middle of multiple groups ideologies.
There are many faults easily pointed out by either side but some are egregiously more so than others that it makes it hard to believe that the other side is acting in good faith. That leads to a middle ground being wholly off the table.
It’s hard to see the forest for the trees but history should honor those that bucked the status quo and fought for the well being of people (in the singular and plural sense) instead of relying upon unquestioned dogmatic beliefs.
Certain administrations (present one included) do more damage to that cause than help.
@@wade7959 this is so true. The thing is, the machine works best to make money for political campaigns when they divide us. The Obama administration had similar outreaches to industry to collaborate with the tech sector for increasing education in the sciences. But none of the media covered that, nor covered this. One of the biggest things I really can't understand why we can't all come together on is infrastructure- digital, power grid, solar investment, transportation- the full package. The jobs to build those infrastructures have to be done in the States, the advantages to bringing all of those out of the mid twentieth century and into the mid 21st would benefit everyone. All the States would gain, regardless of political leaning. Yet no, we continue to focus on things that we cannot agree on, until we sit like the stooges we are in a third world country.
Farts in the wind. Feel-good stories to perpetuate the duping of America while having no effect whatsoever on a macro scale.

So you’re saying...
Learn to code?
Funny how some people view one of the most helpful pieces of advice you can give someone, as harassment or bullying.
Learning to code is a great thing
Depends on who you're talking to. Learn to code for a 3rd grader is different compared to a 55 year old trucker.
No, he was saying it would be nice if you could but not forced or made preferable through policies harmful or showing favoritism, nobody likes the Californian tech snobs that do that. Those people can burn and flail.
@George Britten lmao
I went to school for computer science at Northern Michigan University. During my third year, all my interest and passion for the field was destroyed by this school. I tried a few other studies, but I ran out of passion, money and dropped out. The program was garbage. They forced "free" defective IBM laptops on all students (most students owned computers already and my tuition doubled). We instructed to program on on mac's, then Unix (still in a lab) our required books were incomplete wrote by the professors and were issued multiple revisions. If I remember correctly, the books were never finished. They brought in companies to pitch us jobs (starting at 35k a year), what a joke. Yeah, bitter.
I'm just a guy, raised a tad above poverty, who moved on to a different career path. I don't make a lot of money, so knowing the demand for people burns me - - I missed the boat.
I would have killed to have an ounce of support going through school.
sounds like the school was just made to squeeze people out of their money.
There's no point in being in that field if you lost passion for it though. Moving on like you did is probably the better move for you
Would better schools have similar programs?
Scott they say whenever a door closed in ur face a bigger n better door is opening for u, stick u chest out
You missed the first boat, but there are other boats you can get on! If you like the computer science industry you can still get into it. There are even free classes online you can take if you want to. I have jumped around between jobs myself, but ultimately decided to move back into the computer science industry and I am doing really well for myself. Ultimately it comes down to what do you want to do, and what do you have a passion for. Follow your passion an you will never go wrong!
What is the goal of 'increasing diversity'?
If everybody does whatever they want you aren't gonna see 50/50 men/women in every field.
Always get the best person for the job, period. The only hurdle that should be considered is educational/financial roots.
@jay are you going to explain or answer my question?
Telling me to go research things is a pretty retarded argument. Lol

I hope that $500million ends up in the right place. If they invest $500million into common core math based comp sci I think we might be screwed haha.
TheGunCollective lmao! 😂😂
Common core was cancelled. President Trump is the leader now!
TheGunCollective that's I believe will be the problem, who's getting or who's administrating all this money.
If you don't like Common Core, you're kind of a data point in the case of exactly why it's needed. If you don't like math, or you're in the camp that can't help your kids with their math homework, it's because you were most likely taught the "tricks" of math rather than the deeper root concepts and that's exactly what things like Common Core are trying to reverse - trying to teach kids understanding in the beginning, so that higher level math is more easily grasped.
I cant stress how important a good math teacher is in teaching this. I was taught by a professor who couldnt for the life of himself get students motivated and focused on rote concepts and rewarded students who did well in rote learning which I found disgusting and this is in one of the top universities in my country. I completely agree on teaching math to kids as a pre requisite to becoming more useful as people who use logic at any point in their lives.
I self taught myself to code and create electronics without any assistance from my school and zero encouragement from my school. I saw youtube videos of robotics and that grew my interest and then from there i researched online and taught myself coding with the countless free resources online. Now I am going to be studying engineering at university and i am considering doing computer science aswell. Personally I feel like the online community and open source maker community has a much greater influence on future engineers and programmers and they don't need 500 million dollars to do this. People need to realise that all the information and access is out there if you have a computer and access to the internet you can do anything..... I'm not saying that this is a bad initiative but imo it's already out there.
I know it is amazing, you can literally teach yourself anything as long as you have the time and drive to do it.
What kids really need is encouragement. And they also need to learn how to be skeptical.
But would you consider the fact that they might be trying to devalue the skill by spreading the ability?
Don't do it!
Don't do what?
Unfortunately, you would never see something good like this on the news.

They make it out like it's a charity, but it's really just an investment.
little bit of both really, because they don't have to use their skill with their company. But a little bit of both is still win/win. The charity helps those in need and If these companies make money they can hire more people.
Those two things aren't mutually exclusive. When people support spending government money of education, they call it an investment as well. What is the difference between supporting charitable funding as investment or coercive welfare for the same reason?
+Nicholas Martinez I'm still torn on whether this is much of a charity at all. As others have mentioned, this may affect supply and demand and cause salaries to go down. I'm not sure to what extent though. At the same time, it may help certain groups get into CS that wouldn't have before. It's just the way they way they try to play it off. At least in educational welfare they tell you that it's an investment for the country. I should have ended my sentence with "for them."

How awesome is Destin thuogh! He has such a genuine passion for learning and educating. I love when he goes full geek and get excited about what he's talking about. Love this channel
I understand that "Computer Science" is being used as a term that general populace will understand, but from an implementation standpoint, we need to make sure everyone is actually talking about the same thing
1) CS has nothing to do with programming or coding. Actually it has nothing to do with computers, just the computability of something.
2) Programming has nothing to do with coding, it's just problem solving. Nothing more, nothing less.
3) Coding is menial labor that I hope AIs will do soon.
I see "coding" in school something akin to learning art or history. It's something people should know about, but school won't teach you anything useful. Even at my University, my "programming teachers" all said that their job was not to teach us knowledge, but how to teach ourselves. Tech moves fast. In 2-3 years, half of your knowledge will be useless, and it's getting worse as tech moves faster and faster. Knowledge is a wasteful goal. Understanding is the only thing useful.
Most of the best books on "programming" are back from the 60s and 70s. Nearly (not all) every problem you see in tech, software wise, was solved 60 years ago. What you see is programmers struggling to understand the issues they are presented in an ever so slightly different way and re-inventing the wheel because they don't have the basic understanding to apply the solutions made decades ago.
Programming is an interesting problem domain. Many people make analogies to programming like building a house. Yes, some of programming is knowing about your tools and materials. But what's really awesome about programming is every programmer can not only make their own tools, but their own materials. It's like making your own universe with it's own custom rules, governed only by logic. You can make a material denser than a neutron star or stronger than graphene, or super conductive at any temperature, maybe your universe has many more than 3 spatial dimensions. Then you build a house using those materials in that maybe 12 spatial dimensional universe.
Using this analogy, it would be like becoming a surgeon, where you not only fix biological beings, but you designed the biological beings using your own rules for biology. How could anyone teach you anything about surgery on an organism that has never been seen before and in a universe with completely different rules for biology? You can't. But you can teach someone how to think like a surgeon. That is what programming is all about.
Here in lies the rub. How do you teach someone to think? You can't, they must learn for themselves from themselves. You can only expose them to situations that allow them to have to think in novel ways. Schools need better critical thinking classes, not "coding" classes, but something is probably better than nothing.
You hit the nail on the head. I am trying to, and on track to, graduate with a major in physics and math and a computer science minor. The math and computer science are after thoughts. A mere "well I'm here, and I have time, so why not". It's the physics that I enjoy because it challenges you in many ways and actually makes you think.
If I had the time I would also take philosophy classes, because I like thinking and being taught how to think differently.
Never seen the surgeon analogy before; I like it.
I'd also say that students likely won't all take to a learning style of always thinking for themselves. There will be those who still sit through class and only pick up on the tricks that make things easier, like remembering equations and plugging things in. However, immersing kids into a learning culture of pure, basic fundamentals built onto one another from the very start of their education would help with this process. If students grow up from kindergarten through high school only being taught how to solve things based on fundamental concepts, they might be more lenient to using easy short-hands. I can't think of a good math example, but in Spanish, "Mucho gusto" usually means "Nice to meet you," though its literal translation of "much pleasure" bears no resemblance. But if a Spanish student were to understand that literal translation in its context, he or she would have less chance of using "mucho" in "Nice catch!" and "gusto" in "Meet me there."
As a CS Graduate, I agree on many of your points, but I disagree slightly on a few points.
First, programming has everything to do with coding. The details come in what you are coding in. On the highest level, it is a computer language that you are making a program in, but at the lowest level, the "code" is just a set of math rules that govern computational logic, like lambda calculus. Ultimately my favorite part of computer science is the fact that you are given a problem, a set of constraints, and a logic set to solve the problem with. At that point it is just putting the pieces together in a way that solves the problem.
I also disagree profusely that you cant teach someone to think. This thinking is border line dangerous. I was primed to teach myself coding by playing games, solving puzzles, and building and deconstructing objects in the physical world. This exposure put me in a place to be able to logically deconstruct code in a pre-youtube world and learn it for myself. Problem Solving can be taught, and every student can be taught to be curious. It just comes more natural to others. It is our job as parents and teachers to first teach children curiosity and problem solving. To many time I hear these things described as abilities you are just "born with", a flaw we Americans have shown. Everyone can be taught to problem solve. It just the process is unique to each individual.
Insightful, thank you! And a Shakespeare reference to boot!
"Computer Science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes"
Thank you, Destin for something that is missing all over the world - Common Sense! Love the video love the concept.
This was freakin' lovely. Thank you. :)
The tech industry’s huge push for STEM type subjects at school sadly isn’t an attempt to improve the lives of young children. At a fundamental level, it’s their way off making a generally complex skill (such as programming) much more common within the population so that wages in the future for these fields can be easily undercut.
Even so it's still a benefit to society, especially if they take it easy on the discrimination against whites.
Danny E I agree with you 100%
Danny E You day that like its a nefarious subplot. If programming is cheaper then the product is cheaper. Adobe is $30 a month for the baseline package imagine if it was $5 or $1 or cheaper.
Here's the thing, it can technically improve the lives of SOME young children AND also lower the wages overall. I don't think it's completely fair to say they're disingenuous. Let's say a poor kid with crummy parents, who also happens to be very smart (less common than people assume, but for argument), gets the chance to learn computer science at school. He (or perhaps she) takes that opportunity and learns more and more and eventually becomes a very competent computer scientist. MAYBE, because of a program like this, a child has vastly improved his future prospects. Even if the wages have lowered somewhat, some more people have opportunities, and it's still a decent living (not to mention, the price of goods go down overall). However, I agree this scenario is being oversold and it's more likely target kids will not be capable, be stuck in crappppy environments (schools are no substitute for home/class/neighborhood cultures), and will not be very interested in the first place. But really... not too much harm. $300 million isn't too much to these companies, honestly. I predict the impact will be small, but the PR pretty decent.
My former neighbor valedictorian graduate who majored in computer science and is a whiz...is having his job...shipped to India not because they are better but because they are....well you know....good luck
People aren't going to agree with each other but there is going to be a time where we do need to agree on the future and teaching our kids to be successful. I am hopeful that society will progress forward and be successful
Wolff t
I agree, we need to say that our base desires are the same and push forward in cooperation with that in mind.
Not wiping out the planet and causing human extinction by global warming comes to mind.
Lol, you have said nothing of any substance, just a bunch of feel-good nonsence.
I love all your videos, but this is the best! Destin for President! 😂😂
Those companies probably got a FAT tax deduction from those donations lol
Of course they did, but that helps with incentives for companies to give back.
That’s good if it encourages more companies to donate to more causes like this.
I would rather see good money spent on education than on tax.
taxes r spent on education
I mean, they are literally giving money to the government, that's the whole point of taxes, you do realize that right?
As a current computer science major who loves what I do, this video makes me happy
I would market the idea of nuclear power again. With that much money you could sway public opinion enough to actually supply clean, safe, and inexpensive power to the world
billiondollardan liquid salt thorium reactors are the future
In the past I wrote two reports supporting thorium nuclear power. Fusion nuclear power also interests me but with Elon Musks progress in batteries and as well as in solar panels I am not so stuck on thorium nuclear power even though it could be a possible solution it still has it's flaws however it is a huge upgrade over current nuclear power plants operating today the big downfall is the science is difficult requires highly educated people 20+ years to go anywhere and lots of money and support but solar and wind are not at the sustainable point but neither is thorium nuclear power

I'm Italian and I can say I'm quite lucky to had informatics studies during my high school, I hope some day in this next 2 years something will start here in Italy, I feel this country is not looking in this at all. I admire you, really you make me develop myself everyday, be smart everyday
I feel like the real question is "what is the common goal?"
I always found it weird that for all the normal jobs people had before going into politics, there is only one example I can think of, that a person was previously in the scientific fields. John Glenn, only one I knew off the top of my head. Why don’t scientists ever try and tackle politics
Patrick Lenehan it's too much of a mess and science is way more interesting and rewarding.
that is certainly an interesting question, and i think there are multiple reasons for that. First is a sort of bandwagon effect - scientific communities look down on politics. Then, the 'scientists' have all gone through a selection filter where only the most hard working, lucky, bright, etc, survive in the field. Sadly, the situation is even worse today because funds are decreasing. Then you have to motivate a scientist to leave his field and get into politics. How will you do that, given that the voters are so ignorant and the system is so rigged? Finally, i think most scientists would value something objective, concrete. Politics is all about 'perspective' and constructing narratives.
How many politicians become scientists?
I think that people who chose to work in scientific fields do this out of a great passion for science most of the time. Unlike other fields that are often taken to pursue other goals like money, power, social standing.
And while it's easy for people who pursue power to leave their old job behind, it's hard to leave your passion behind.
Plus, I think it's easier for people like layers and company founders to live with all the dishonesty and games in politics than it is for a person who is smart and genuinely good.
Patrick Lenehan Margaret Thatcher
Well, Angela Merkel worked as a physicist in in the DDR and is now chancellor of Germany and there more.
When I say I agree with Destin, I’m telling everyone that I agree with everything you say.
This is by far the most wholesome channel on RUclips!
I would've loved if this had been reported on by CNN, MSNBC, ABC, NYT, etc... This is AWESOME!! Great video Destin!
Clock shows 2am and ur making vids, Awesome. And is there any way to show this video to everyone on earth, awesome job Destin
Yathu prem how do you know it's "am?" Couldn't it be pm?
Doesn't it tell you? I tried endlessly to get that clock, anybody knows how or where can I buy it? Thanks in advance.
The clock says "0" & "2" on the upper displays, instead of "1" & "4", that is how you know it's am.
Thank you very much. Yes, it was 2am. I had to catch a flight to Kansas City the following morning so this was all the time I had.
paul is an idiot It's simple. Each row from top to bottom represent each number in 24hr clock as XX:XX by liting up the squares. So if it is 1PM it would lit up 13 squares up top, zero on next and so on. In here it got 0 squares on top 1 or 2 in the second one. So it had tobe 2AM or 1AM (at the start of video)
Destin you just totally rock! Not only are both of your channels doing for me and my family exactly what is intrinsically placed in the name of the channel but you’re such a fun and awesomely enthusiastic person we constantly desire to learn more from! Thank you! Great perspective btw here.
Thanks for the motivation. Sometimes everything is in front of you but someone needs to show you to realise its importance. Nice video smarter everyday!!
At the beginning I thought someone gave the channel 500M dollars 😂
Because honestly your channel has been a huge influence to the world for science 👍
God bless you and your family
Something is up with the autofocus on your camera, it is just continuously hunting for focus lock.
This video really made me take a step back and realize that alliances can be formed for the greater good, even with your adversaries.
Outstanding video Destin, I love the message!
Great message there Dustin. Speaking about real educational dilemmas and possibilities while elevating it to a more fluid efficient understanding of beliefs and progress. Learning by listening and helping by thinking, instead of fighting, bickering and swimming in hatred and petty rivalries.
I see the economy differently, money is being allocated to help people find computer science jobs but there is still many welder jobs, mechanic jobs, and electrician jobs that are going to be needed in like 2 years. There is already about 3.8 million jobs like these, open and not filled. It is just going to get worse if no one does something.
You are still going to work hard for the same amount of money, especially when you account for degree cost. Having a degree does not make a job easier, and it does not always increase your chances of making money.
I don't know I just get worked up. Some people drop out of college. They might think there is no other options for them. They collect there unemployment check and live out on the streets, or they get a job at a McDonald's restaurant and collect welfare. You could join the military, the cops, be a garbage man take welding classes at a college and get an associates
To say nothing of the fact that welding & electrical work is going to be much harder to automate 30 years hence.
Pipefitters and welders can make 250k a year. 0 debt.

Back in 1970 when I was in high school in Rep of Vietnam my history teacher told us: if 2 Vietnamese got together, we would fight everyday and nothing accomplish. But 2 Americans got together, they would accomplish something big.
I agree with Destin, we have to work together. In 1990, Boeing launched the 777 program that was 100% designed 3D on computers (CATIA). There were 3000 engineers in this program. We finished the design in 2 .5 years (super fast) and assemblies fit together beautifully with far less issues than previous programs (done with partially CAD or on drawing boards).
We need this mentality back on every industry in USA 🇺🇸
Take this all with a grain of salt, these are all leaders of companies that want cheap labor and more coders mean cheaper coders
Exactly
9:00 based on the size of those HDMI ports on the wall either all y'all are small, or that's on massive pc
its just a handle for the saftey deposit boxes without locked covers on them..... you kids really need to get out more....
ADMIND3R r/woosh
@@brjkoster you underestimate the stupidity of people 🤣🤣 a couple of you idiots made the same kinda comment like this, you didnt even know what it was eithier kid 🤣🤣
I think the single best thing this video shows is what people can accomplish when they work together as opposed to against each other, they really ought to try that more often
Ivanka is more intelligent than the media makes her to be. I love things like this!
After taking my first coding class, I knew that some form of a coding class should be incorporated at an earlier age. Even if you do not go into a field of study that involves coding, a coding class teaches you things that no other class can.
11:40 Haha, we love you too Destin
Thx u, that's the video that makes me subscribe, and 1.5yrs later…
How the blazes does this video not have more likes?!?! *Fantastic* message and fantastic video, mate!
I'm studying mechanical engineering at the moment! 😁
George Hamvas Hummerich thank you, you will be extremely vital in the future
Hope everything is going well for you
Hope you enjoy learning the same! It sure is awesomeee💙
George Hamvas Hummerich oh poor you :(
Ayye fellow MechE
Get people coding so companies can treat developers as commodities again. Really hard to do currently with a small pool of devs demanding decent wages. Once this boils over we'll be paying devs $10 an hour.
It will never be that low too many brainless or at least simple jobs that pay more.
"get the money and learn to code". i love u
My favorite video. I am from Alabama and went to school for programming. Now I code for NASA!! Very inspirational!! Thank you as always! ♥️
Sir what about Mike Rowe and his program for people to get technical and skill based jobs with or without college degrees. I think that should be represented as well. Mike askes the question, why is the person who is a plumber makings 6 figures a year and out of debt, looked down on while the heavily in debt recently college graduated kid with a 40k a year office drone job looked at as better and more successful? Maybe we should ask that question or feature a segment on it.
Hear hear!
Probably a less glamorous job psychologically / socially.
It not a zero-sum game. There are enough shortfalls in both skilled labor (trades) and STEM to go around. Both pathways are lucrative, both are difficult, demanding, and require a lot of hard work and dedication to the craft. I'm a journeyman machinist, and absolutely adore Mike Rowe but, I don't hold one program as more important than another. So when I see events like these, whether it is in a trades or a STEM fair, I'm just glad that they exist and are advertised as one of many lucrative pathways to being a contributing member of society. So the "what about X" mindset is not very productive because we don't want to take away from these industries that represent massive skill shortfalls in the American labor market.
Sidebar: There are way too many colleges putting people in crippling debt for useless degrees that are either so niche or irrelevant to the workforce resulting in a loan that can never be paid or discharged. We need to be diverting those kids to functional fields such as trade, STEM, or another in-demand field. The more of these opportunities we can afford them do so, the better.
Chill out. Thats also a good thing but mike row didn’t invite him over there to talk. This is a video about this particular experience. Also this is not a students aid chanelle. Stop complaining about what is not represented in this video
@ And yet here you are writing, and communicating, through a COMPUTER.
Computers have become NECESSARY in modern society.
Like any "young" industry, it is both a blessing, and a curse.
if someone handed you $500 million dollars what would you do? fall over
GladiatorGator wake up
Nike last year gave $500 million to the University of Oregon for a new science campus. So $300 million is nothing in a multi billion dollars is nothing for these corporations.
I wish this video have way more millions of views because people need to see this to understand you can disagrees with someone but also agree on the greater good
I really wish my highschool offered more programming classes. I would have totally taken them.
I think learning to swim should be mandatory in schools. No one should ever drown!
I think the reason women are "under represented" in CS(and other fields) is because they are interested in different things. Pretty simple and not malicious at all. No monetary amount will change people's preferences. I don't think there's anything wrong with people choosing what they like for a career. But I'm obviously not a woman or a college graduate so what do I know!
Thanks for another great video Destin!
Exactly! If you give everybody freedom of choice you're not gonna get 50% men and 50% women in every field. That's just not how human behaviour works. Just by pure chance you could end up with a huge deficit of female IT technicians because most women might just want to do other things instead. Same thing with a deficit in male nurses. Choice means randomness and inequity but not inequality.
You're right, so no need to downplay your credibility. Even if you were a women or college graduate, it wouldn't help you make a general statement on those topics.
What's the gender differential in social sciences? 70% female to 20% male? The rest gender non binary?
You're truly amazing Destin.
Ivanka is very coherent and on the right page here. Fair play to her for this! Collaboration is what we need :)
Its 2019, im taking a AP Computer Science class in my highschool
financed by this programme ?
I don't believe these huge corporations should get to decide the fate of education in public schools.
John Doe Their donations are large enough that they wield too much power.
They already do, by spending millions lobbying (buying) politicians who then legislate in a favorable way, which recoups their costs.
Look at it as proactively educating a workforce they would like to have.
They are providing an opportunity that will be prevelent in the future, and is now. Do you think that that is bad? Right now only the government controls the curriculum anyway.
Destin gives me faith in humanity. A smart guy, a good guy, and an all-around well-balanced person. I'm tired of people who deal with everything in absolutes.
So your the reason why I have computer science in school. Thanks.
9:29 The wall is full of huge HDMI ports...
Am I the only one seeing this...?
"Full" sized HDMI port
its just a handle for the saftey deposit boxes without locked covers on them..... you kids really need to get out more....
Lmao I literally had the exact same thought! Glad I'm not the only one who is nerdy enough to think that.
take the joke
The real advantage is not filling all the programming vacancies. That's what H1B is for.
Rather, it is to create a generation of people who don't treat technology as magic. And the difference between basic computer literacy and proper CS classes would be like the difference between memorizing Kepler and Tsiolkovsky equations and playing Kerbal space program.
Speaking of literacy, I should finally read that Ershov paper).
Man how is your entire family so smart? I thought mine was, until i started watching these videos
If I could like this twice, i would. Science and discussion will always be the key to advancement.
