You look like Popeye in the thumbnail
Fun story. Popeye actually holds an interesting place in my 5 year-old childhood memory. I used to LOVE Popeye cartoons because I thought it was awesome he could get strong when eating spinach from a can. One time my mom pulled into a family friend's driveway to return something and left my sister and I in the car. I was holding a can of Popeye's brand spinach that my Granny had given me. It was dark out and rather cold. I remember seeing a jogger wearing a hoodie come around the corner and back behind the car. Mom was on the front porch about 30 yards away. The man quickly darted into the car door that she had left open, looked me in the face (quite surprised to see children) and grabbed my Mom's purse and left. I held onto the spinach can knowing that somehow it would keep me safe because it made Popeye strong. When she got back to the car I told her a man took her purse and she called they called the police and we did the whole police report thing. They found the purse later in the neighborhood in someone's back yard. It had been quickly stripped of any cash and discarded. To this day this even has changed me in two ways.
1. I won't go farther than 20 feet from my vehicle when my children are in it without a clearly thought out plan on how to engage anyone who tries any funny-business.
2. I think about this event any time I see a can of Popeye's spinach.
No idea why I shared this with you. This is a video about chameleon tongues. Hey, isn't this chameleon tongue neat? Thanks for being a subscriber by the way. I appreciate it.
BEST. REPLY. EVER!
LMAO, what an interesting story! Loved it!
Lelouch Alzahrani that’s what I said
SmarterEveryDay
Wow thank you so much for sharing your story with me.
I love your videos they are very informative and entertaining at the same time.
Love your family too.
I'm more impressed with the fact destin could hold a cricket in his mouth without cringing.
A wonder of nature
He is just hard as nails like Brady
H E Y V S A U C E
Once you spend some time in Africa and South America this seems super tame.
show off lol
I also want a friend who answers questions like "Do you have a chameleon skeleton" with "I'm certain I do".
Then might I recommend subscribing to The Brain Scoop? ruclips.net/user/thebrainscoop
Out of context, this is far more hilarious than it should be.
Ermude10 your comment made me laugh out loud. Thank you.
SmarterEveryDay Of course! Subscribed since 2 years ago ;)
I had a chameleon, but sadly he died
You got to first base with the Chameleon.
That's second base, first is the date
and whatever base he is with the cricket
That's dedication indeed..... I have a tarantula but I don't love mine that much. 🧐
0:20 never thought I'd see a grown man giggle like a little school when he gets tongued by a chameleon
GET OVER HERE !!!!!

"As soon as Emily sent me this footage, everything became clear"... I see what you did there.
sonnder I don't see it
I'm dumb, what did I do there?
I'm just speculating, but the way I took it was that Graslie's footage included using an enzyme to make the cartilage/tissue clear.
Pun about the clear tissue
its all clear to me now ..
6:57 lol was that the cricket screaming
It was suppose to be XP I died on that part
All sound effects in all slow-mo videos on this channel are added in, they don't come from the actual action.
SuperSMT That's true in any slow-mo video. They have to use sound mixing to re-create what the slowed-down audio "might have" sounded like.
Something else that makes it 4 times funnier - when it's sped back up, you get the Wilhelm Scream.
slow motion has no sound, it is inserted afterwards, so you could add anything you want to make it more interesting ;D
248 crickets voted thumbs down.
Lol
Yeah... who on earth would downvote something like this? Crickets is the only possible explanation.
that sound effect at 6:45 though!
Kutay Kösem Especially at 6:57.
I felt bad for laughing :D
raaaaaaaaugh
4ightBit but you get to see the whole scene at 6:45
+blvckraikage
You missed the point... Did you hear that slow-mo noise Destin made at 6:57? XD
that slow mo scream from the last cricket rofl
lol
My coworker walks by and said "what are you watching?" "Oh I'm just learning how a chameleon tongue works" she says "Yeah you never know when you need to know that" I said "Yup smarter everyday".
It's the g spot maneuver!
Clearly the Chameleon species is not yet fully evolved, as everyone knows the catapult mechanism is inferior the one of trebuchets!
Hapi djus ayyyyyyy
Trebuchets fall under the category of catapult.
Exactly they are finding new Cham species every year.
The gun powder tongue beats all
Just wait for the thermonuclear chameleons
That aim though, incredible.
That Guy ...hey! You are, aren't you!? That guy!!
You know that you do the same thing each time you pick something up or catch something? Binocular vision is cool.
@That Guy, I agree. I was hoping some time would be spent explaining how Mojo influences the aim using minor adjustments in the system during 'flight'. Or something like that.. I don't know what actually happens...
+Christopher Lusher
From how it was explained, it sounds like the tongue "tip" is pretty close to ballistic once the sphincters squeeze off of the bone. It aims and shoots. I think that's about it.
Deschain19 , Perhaps that could be all. I was thinking that maybe if Mojo lowers the bone in his mouth, that it would adjust the trajectory so that the firing of the sphincter muscles would make the tip go higher. Or, if he moved the bone right, the end would go left, etc. It would be like driving reverse in your vehicle.
That tongue looks obscene.
I have to agree with you. Imagine the last thing you see in your life being a giant space proboscis coming out of no where and beaming you up to some alien ship, except it's actually a huge chameleon crunching your bones until you're dead.
Imposto é roubo.
trucid2 Your embarrassingly obvious comment should be obscene to you, should have been foreseen before being typed out, and refrained from.
Imposto é roubo
That cricket screaming "HEEEEEEELP" at 6:58 just cracked me up!
Also, WHAT THE HECK?! Emily's TRANSLUCENT CHAMELEON is soo awesome! Loved this video so much!
6:02 Cricket concussion.
That is the least of its worries
*No animals we harmed in the making of this video (except crickets, a lot of crickets)* 👍
_Thats RIght_
I never put to much thought on how long a chameleons' tongue is and how it works. It is quite interesting and amazing to watch. Just as the channels name SmarterEveryDay.^^
Ariana Garcia, And don't forget to go to thebrainscoop channel, Emilie have many great videos over there (you can even find how long the tongue of other animal are ;)
6:58 Thanks for addimg that slowmo screaming sound to that cricket Gordon. I laughed.
I can’t believe no one has commented on the editing at 6:56
It sounds like the cricket is screaming XD
A Strange Tree i cant believe you didnt see the guy with 300 likes already mentioned it. Beside your 6 likes, 😂

This channel consistently produces some of the highest quality content in my subscription feed.
When you hear a swearword carry across the jungle at the kind of volume that scatters birds, and causes monkeys to sound off... it's one of those guys biting his tongue.

You just explained a long time mystery, thank you
That scream at 7:00 :D
DESTIN! HELP! I discovered an odd phenomenon with oobleck. When oobleck of the right consistency drips off of say, a spoon, it goes off at a strange angle instead of straight down. The flow almost looks like a sine-wave sometimes. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS! I really want to know wtf is happening. I can send video if you want.
Eddie Van Horn
like this?
ruclips.net/video/zz5lGkDdk78/видео.html
top kek No, I know what he means. Basically the flow of oobleck down from a spoon isn't straight down, but rather goes at an angle. You can try it yourself.
It's because of the way the water and cornstarch 'stick' together, rather than dripping like a Newtonian fluid, the oobleck acts like a viscous liquid with sheer planes or flow. It's mass is pulled down by gravity causing shear thickening, which makes the oobleck more viscous or thicker. The more viscous the fluid, the more it holds together and resists losing it's shape. Once the mass of the oobleck is supported by the oobleck that has already fallen, the shear thickening is reduced and the oobleck returns to a less viscous state and collapses into the oobleck puddle.
This made me think of the honey coiling video immediately, but I totally got beaten to the post. :)
Eddie Van Horn he definetly needs to look into it
The way you handle brand sponsorship is very admirable, your so up front and honest about it. Just one of many things I love about your videos, keep on making these incredible videos!
The top one Watchmojo quote.
1:18, if you have english subtitles on it says "Watchmojo is cancer"
Ancient Weezie dialect, the computers are getting smart...
6:57 made my day!
Sergey 420px if a dying cricket makes ur day then ur a monster
that part was pretty funny
This disgusting and amazing at the same time
nah just amazing x)
LOL, at 5:03 "Everything became clear." I see what you did there.
TheAgentTexas wht
@@hacker-7214 the chameleon was made "clear" lmao
Destin’s reaction is absolutely adorable, he’s genuinely so impressed and excited
It’s so funny how you’re too excited to even talk at the beginning! 🤣
1:15 turn subtitles on
Lol
WTF!!!!!!!!
Subliminal messages
Lmao
WTF HOW?
So much effort in this videos! Thanks a lot!
Ah I absolutely love that you're continuing collaborations with Emily, it's through you I first saw her channel and since then I've definitely binged the brain scoop a number of times.
This is a horror film for crickets
I seriously can't emphasize enough how much I appreciated this video. Super interesting!! Thank you Destin!
I love how genuinely excited I feel when I watch these videos.
Beautiful footage. Thanks!
french kissing with a Chameleon
Sad fact. I kissed this Chameleon more than my wife this week. I need to go fix that.
SmarterEveryDay I'm dead😂😂😂
I like how these videos show up 3 years later in my feed and they are just as interesting as ever. A testament to how these will always be cool even decades from now
Dude! I had to replay that laugh you did when you did the first take of the cricket in your mouth....you've got me rolling on the floor! Excellent vid man! Thanks.
THAT WAS SO COOL!!! I mean, I have heard of SmarterEveryDay but I didn't really watch it very much. This video was so cool and interesting!!! I liked and subscribed right away!
SpiceToTheMax, And please go to thebrainscoop channel, Emilie have more fascinating videos over there.
I love Smarter Everyday, very positive and upbeat videos all the time.
Hasn't anyone every warned you about chameleon herpes? If you develop little oral sores that change color with your environment, please go see a vet right away. It's treatable in the early stages, but if you start craving crickets, or having delusions that your the hypnotoad, it may be too late.
I can only imagine Destin developing that crazy chameleon tongue !!
7:42 "i might steal this from you" XD
So many questions left unanswered.
How does he pull the tongue back in?
What is the "sticking" mechanism that lets him grab the cricket?
Is this the same with frogs?
I think we need a follow up video Destin, this video was not nearly enough.
7:00 XD i love that add in
Every video is like a Christmas Present for me. Thanks for doing all the research and the perfect shots and edit! Greetings from Spain!
that Argh at 6:57 lol
It was the cricket's scream 😂

After I watched the first slow mo I was gonna go do some research on how their tongues worked, then I realized I was SmarterEveryDay and was only 3 mins in. Dustin explained everything I wanted to know! Love this channel!
your videos are awesome!, my son is gonna be born soon and i can't wait to go through your videos with him...might be a few years, but ill keep enjoying them in the mean time. great job!
5:57 perfect jawline😂😂
Destin Grylls
Mindblown away !! Nature has always the best design !! Its amazing how there is a two bar linkage like thing inside a chameleon !!
Kiwi Co and Smarter Every Day may be the best sponsor match up I have seen. I definitely took advantage of this when you first mentioned it and my daughter loves it! Can't recommend highly enough.
Now we know exactly *what dat mouf do*

Cut them in half?
_Some say he blends into any environment, and that he is friends with Wonder Woman's invisible jet... All we know is he's not the xenomorph, but he is the xenomorph's __*__EARTHLING COUSIN_*
Just as a side note, chameleons don't change colors to blend into their environments.
felixu95 I know. I wanted to be funny :/
felixu95 you've never seen top gear huh
I'm pretty sure you meant to write xenomorph? Xeno as in Latin for foreign or strange and morph as in life form.
Hirvee5 yeah sorry. I'm half retarded
A truly remarkable, informative and entertaining video, thank you AGAIN!
Once again; cool, entertaining and informative. Love getting the email notification that there's a new video up.
5:02 no pun intended
When you freeze at 8:57 it seems like Mojo is looking at him
I love the added sound effects on the slow motion footage
That was totally wicked! I loved how the muscle end was only held on by a tiny strand of tongue.
I still have questions! How does retraction of the tongue work (including how the tongue muscle part can then realign and slide back onto the bone)? How does the tongue capture the prey? Is it through contraction of the muscles around the cricket to 'grab' it, or does it just stick to the cricket? Great footage and educational as always, nonetheless :)
I R Hagzy afaik there is a special fluid on its tongue which is only sticky when under pressure, so the cricket sticks to the tongue but doesn't stay there once its in the chameleons mouth
Here's an explanation on how a frog tongue works by Derk from Veristablium. They probably work in a similar way ruclips.net/video/cFWIrfzYVV0/видео.html
Hey Destin, where do the sound effects come from? The sounds of the tongue stretching, that's not real right?
You probably saw it already but he has a video about how they design the slow-mo sounds
Audio engineering, he has a guy that makes these sounds.
@@Johny_D Oof, the guy's just asking a question. You'd think that people wouldn't react like this on a channel about getting smarter. 🤦♂️
@@danielrodrigues4903 Well it looks like the comment was deleted at least
It's like
Yay, thanks for collabbing with Emily from The Brain Scoop! Sending The Field much love! :D
Hahaha the cricket screaming as it gets pulled in!! I love the sound effects 😁 and I know it’s an effect because of a later vid. Cheers Destin
My chameleon is a bad aim and always misses lol
IT STILL HAS BRAINS ON IT
+
Hooray for the Field museum's process. That was a fun demonstration between your illustrations and that specimen.
Wonderful job as usual, Destin!
If memory serves, the tip of the tongue is non Newtonian, so it flows around the cricket on impact, and then “sets”for the slow retraction.
murk1e i think its not the tip, but the chameleons saliva/fluid on its tongue
Depends on how you define 'part of the tongue mechanism' :)
His face in thumbnail reminded me of Popeye😂
"THE GIFT IS LEARING" golden words right there
Hey Destin, I just wanted to take a second to thank you for everything that you put out. I discovered the NoDumbQuestions podcast a few weeks ago and I’ve been binge listening ever since. I’ve already listened to the some of the most recent episodes, and now I’ve gone back and begun listening from episode 1. I’m currently on episode 19… and that’s what brings me here. I’ve seen this video before, but I figured it couldn’t hurt to give it another view.
p.s. My daughter just received her 6th kiwi create and we both love them. Thank you for introducing me to such an awesome concept.
Also congrats on 8 million subs!
I've never felt so bad for a cricket before in my life until that last one :(
No crickets where harmed in the making of the video
😂😂I love your sound guy! The slow-mo shout from the cricket as he gets carried away at the end was epic!!😂😂 Great stuff as always! Thanks for the learning🙏🏻
180 days getting smarter! Wow time flies! Keep it up!
uhh anyone else notice how its tongue looks more like a dongue
No... only you did.
Actually, I noticed that too. :)
THANK U
-No- insects were harmed in the making of the video!
this freaking channel is better than everything whats on tv
This video is absolutely amazing. Also, I've seen videos that make test tubes "disappear" in oil. So to see a real world application blew my mind.
Try to watch this while eating. I dare you.
Is the tip of the tongue just sticky or do they contract muscles to "grab" the cricket?
A very great video explaining the mechanisms behind the catapult of the chameleon's tongue. Who would have thought that there is a bone involved.
Ordered my crate for my 3 yr old, thanks Destin. The wife has spend way to much over the years on Audible as well. Have a great week!
