When the bite is slow, I twitch the jig off the bottom and usually get hit on the drop. To a point the fish become docile enough to wait for the jig to descend to the bottom.
Other blackfish video makers cut the legs off the crabs directly into the water as chum. I notice you cut legs off over the bucket. Is your cutting over the bucket deliberate?
I asked him that same question a while back and his answer makes sense. If you cut the legs into the water and they are going to drift in the current, the fish will follow so no fish under the boat. Just in case he doesn't get back to you.
Love the underwater videos. Sent my GoPro down last week on a spot near fishers island I fish couldn’t believe how clear the water was. My only problem was keeping it still have to find a better way to rig it up
Hey, John great trip and awesome blackfish behavior video. I must say I used this exact technique this past week to triple limit on the tog with a fish up to 7 pounds. Long Island sound on nice piece. It's really tough to wait through the small taps, but once they pick that jig up, a hard hook set gets em! Thanks again for making me a better tog fisherman. From guys like you, Todd, and Halkius, I learned a lot from POV Tog fishing and narrative. Oh yes, Skinner dark matter spinner. Shimano twin power , 15 pound braid, 20 pound leader. Also Last week using the same set up, landed plenty of stripers on diamond jig. I actually use the same rod and set up for fluke too. Such a versatile combo, thanks. Tight lines!
Love your videos. Very educational. Apologies, as you've probably answered this before, but for this type of fishing why do you prefer a spinning set up over a bait caster? Thanks!
Always love watching your video.. Highly educational. I have one important question. S&S jigs I noticed J&H and other tackle shops are running low with inventory.. SS I believe they were sold? Are your brand of jigs going to continue??? 😢
Love your videos.at the 14:15 mark there's a blackfish at the bottom of the screen with something big in its mouth and it looks like he was shaking it back and forth.was wondering what that could be
Hi John, I purchased the blue rod and reel set up you used in this video. Purchased it from J and H (Treated myself for Christmas) and I wanted to know if the top guide has a ceramic loop or is it designed with out it? Because my particular rod does not have a ring on the first guide?
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Love your videos, I used this set up and my co worker went out and purchased it as well. Going Fluking this week out of Brooklyn. Keep you posted if I hear back from J and H.
I only use a jig for tog .The spot lock is required to do it right surprisingly a 1 1/2 to 2 oz jig is perfect.it even cuts through a fast current if pitched right .its slow to the bottom but the low profile allows it to remain in place .I have the most success with Toggy time and SS jigs.the hook should be at a .45 degree angle up when resting.just lift when they start chewing.
Awesome video as usual. At what point do you think these fish will be moving into deeper water? Your drone is showing 21°C (69°F). Still warm down there!
Awesome video! Would green crabs work for sheeps head as well? I'm asking because we've caught some sheeps head in the Jamaica Bay New York City area. Have you caught any sheep set in your area? Any chance they'll make some type of comeback? Your thoughts...
When do the blackfish start to move from inshore to offshore? If you were fishing from shore for blackfish when would you stop as the fish have moved to deeper water? End of November perhaps? Generally speaking.
Down in here in south jersey (cape my county) migrating tog head out sometime in december depending on water temps, but we have resident tog that are here all year long. Same with stripers, residents are here all year long. Its the reason I fish out of a kayak instead of a boat. I have no need to fish reefs or wrecks when I can catch these same fish at the jetties and bridges. No gas required! 😊
John, Great video. If I may. Were you taught this technique or did you develop it ? The concept of fishing for blackfish with 10lb braid and less than an ounce is pretty damn cool. I've never done it but it makes sense with the right set up.
Another outstanding video. Two questions, if I may. (A) What are the small fish with the stripe on their side? (B) What camera are you using for the underwater video? Thanks in advance.
I only use 3/4-1.5 Anything else tells crazy to me no matter what haha. Honestly I don’t like going above 1 oz! After that I’m going single hook rig and a 6oz flat
Hey John, I'm just curious. You mentioned sheepshead in florida, but have you tried to target them up here? In south jersey they are quite large. I had a 28 inch 14.4 lb sheep this past summer in cape may area. Also, how many inches would you say the average sized sheep is in florida where your fishing?
We don't have them on the North Fork. I used to dive a lot in these areas and have never seen one. Where I fish for sheepshead in SW Florida 20'' is big.
Wouldn't be surprised if you see them move in eventually. Down here in past couple seasons we have seen alot of changes with southern species moving in. Two yrs ago tarpon were spearfished in barnegat light inlet, large baracuda were caught in the delaware bay, I caught a snowy grouper in back bays of wildwood, and we are starting to see more red drum. I target the sheepshead differently than you do in florida though. My method for targeting them is posted on my youtube channel if you care to check it out. Hey thanks for the info, and wow, great underwater footage, very enlightening! 👍
Nice, next time if possible show the sonar also so some of them will know what they look like on the screen. Might want to hide the location though if you are that type of fisherman
Wouldn't leaving the legs on make it look bigger and attract bigger fish? Take your time getting down to Florida it's going to be nasty here for a week or so injoy the last of your great season and great videos!
How does John Skinner only have 150K subscribers? I personally know 150 K people who know who he is and copy his every move😂 My dad used to sell his books and VHS in his tackle shop down in Stone Harbor NJ. His tips are the best. You put John anywhere and he’s catching what’s there.
@ haha. You bet John. I met Jose Wejebe, Flip Pallot, Hank Parker, Roland Martin and Jimmy Houston at a Henry’s Tackle trade show back when I was a kid in the 90s. This supersedes that. You’re a living legend bud. Keep em tight.
Ehhh u r back ! where have u been , Hibernating....? I miss ya joyful video, glad u r back again !
Wow, very educational. I would not have guessed at the number of fish around the bait and all the activity taking place. Great post, John.
thank you for bringing us this valuable footage
When the bite is slow, I twitch the jig off the bottom and usually get hit on the drop. To a point the fish become docile enough to wait for the jig to descend to the bottom.
This video is phenomenal!! 💯
Very cool to see the underwater footage as always. Had a killer season fishing from shore, really nice fish almost every outing. Biggest at 24"
24 is very awesome from shore these days.
Great video John! So cool to see them underwater.
had a 17'' fluke take my green grab just 2 weeks ago , in the inlet was super weird , and just an inch short for keeping it
What are the little fish with the stripe john ?
Just subscribed! From California and have never fished outside of Cali. This is great! - Johnathan Skinner!

Exactly. Thanks.
Great video
Great video !!!
Outstanding
Hey John, great video! I did notice you kept the sounder on the entire video and it didn’t seem to have a negative impact on the bite.
I doubt it impacts them, but it can't help, so I turn it off if not needed.
Thanks absolutely the best

Thanks for the great comment. Glad you like the rod! Extremely versatile for sure.

Are we gonna get any south shore surf fall run action before you head back to Florida?!

My branded jigs will reappear in the spring.

Crab shell.
Geez I didn't even think of that
Where do you go in Florida? I've fished the mangroves south of Naples and Marco Island. Lots of sheepheads and red snapper.
Pine Island
@@JohnSkinnerFishing that's a great place
Mr Skinner - What is your source for the satellite imagery you use to pick spots? Is it just ordinary Google Earth?
Yes.

Great vedio clear water. Question i noticed that you, were using a chartreuse jighead. Does color matter and what is your goto color?
I don't think it matters at all.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What’s the maximum water depth you would use this technique in ? Thanks.
Depends on current. You can fish in 100 feet like this if there's not much current, or it can be impossible in 15 feet if the current is fast.
Just curious. Can you tell me what is the make model and year of your boat? I see you have a 70 hp ob.
1986 grumman 5.0 meter boat.
Thank you John. I’m looking for something close to this boat. I like the height of the gunwales.
Thank you so much.
Awesome video as usual. At what point do you think these fish will be moving into deeper water? Your drone is showing 21°C (69°F). Still warm down there!
I'd ignore that temperature on the drone, but there were still fish on the beach last weekend.
what type of fish at5.46 frame that has a lateral strip
Seabass. They look different underwater sometimes.
what’s the camera your using for underwater video
It's from a broken Chasing drone.

Is it possible to use jigs from a jetty?Think snagging would be a issue.Seems like it would be tough but from a boat it looks effective.
I use them off the beach in this area and they work great.
Is this video before John's jigging jerks blackfish video that just came out?
He doesn’t watch my vids lol but yes, we actually talk about this in one clip on my video from yesterday.
