I've been up in the arch twice, being raised in southern Illinois about 85 miles from the Gateway Arch. I saw it in various stages of its construction when I was a kid. I believe it's about 660 feet tall, with 18 feet of sway at the top in a strong wind. They day it's the safest place to be in a high wind. I loved it. Don't let this video scare you. While you're in the area, go to the zoo. It's free admission unless they have changed since I was there. The Planetarium is nice, too.
I've always wanted to go up in the arch, but after seeing this and how cramped it is, especially in the elevator, there are not enough pills available to overcome my claustrophobia. So, thanks for the tour.
Honestly thank you for the commentary because I'm watching this because my husband and I are supposed to go to the Arch today and he wants to go in the elevator but I am terrified. This elevator video is really helpful to show me what to expect (as much as possible) and if it's worth it.
Thumbkins UP on the video! I was on that ride about 40+ years ago as a little kid. THATS what started my claustrophobia and my fear of heights, plus it was about 100 degrees at the time. .
Live in St. Louis. The view of Busch Stadium is awesome up there. As for the tram. Its supposed to turn, it cant go straight. That Arch isnt built straight.
I fucked up by getting into this today, I have major claustrophobia and didn't think it through before getting in. I had a big panic attack, still trying to come down from it (panic). Never again.
I'm from Miami was visiting that area on Friday. I love going on all types of rides but this one not really. the elevator is a capsule to small you can not even sit up straight and if you suffer from claustrophobia not for you.
Thank you for sharing! I ALWAYS wanted to see how those elevators looked and worked and thanks to you, I just did! Hopefully someday i will take the ride for myself!
I went to the Arch plenty times but the first time I went up to observation deck was 4 years ago in September when I was in 7th grade my school had trip and as were on the elevator I heard the kids were screaming on the way up and one crying on the way up when we got up there everybody was screaming except me and enjoyed the amazing view.
Skeeler Mac I know !!!! I was wondering when the F would the thing ever stop ! So small and crampedS. I NEVER wanna get in that small ass elevator ! YIKES !!! Nah, I'm good. LBVS
it takes about 5 minutes to get up to the top and back down to the main lobby tickets are $15 each and you can be up on the observation deck for as long as you want
+Elevator Filmer Dominic Arnone haha dude this one time i was tripping with my man chip and the couple we rode up with figured it out pretty quickly so we started laughing and then
people do not realize that the track for these are actually a c shape so they have to be small to make to turns. The noises that you hear are the leveling motors. They level based on the same ideal as a level you would use in construction. There is a bubble on top of each car. Also these have been around for over 50 years. They have recently updated them but the cars are the same they just updated the computers on them as well as the motors and cables and such
Me and a couple of friends are going to St Louis on Jan 29th for WWE Royal Rumble. We're thinking about going up the Arch the next day. I hope we do go up it, I've always wanted to go up it.
I know this video is at least 8 years old, but the doors were I think the original doors these came with. If you look closely, they look though if they were made of wood. The first time I rode these was in 1977. That was on a field trip with summer school.
as a now retired elevator repairman....my first thought..what a bitch of a walk up for a repair that would be. The video showed stairs, spiral stairs ( I hate those)... with all I know about it......I'll pass on it! LOL
I didn't hear you explain how the "elevator" adjusts every few feet for the angle of the arch. This is the only type of elevator of its kind in the world if I remember right!
From the looks of it, does this use a normal elevator door operator as well? Also are those bumpers (safety edges)? If so, wow it really is an elevator!
if you want to see a small elevator, you need to come to kansas city and come to the kansas city power and light building to see the 1928 otis elevator!
did ya know that cab 4 is a bit bigger and has better doors cab 1 has a window at the front well there was when i went there i think they took out those windows i dunno
I used to live in Arnold, MO. Remember all the times when family would come in from Detroit and we would take them to the Arch. Just remember one thing, don't fart on in that elevator.
WOW, The best & weirdest elevator ever. Great video to:) Favourited and liked:) Are you going to any more places like this soon, I would love to see another elevator like this:)
I rode up with a fat lady who was acting like she was going to freak out before we got on the elevator. Everything went great though and we survived the journey.
oh my god "There is some wind entering the cab. So you might hear some wind on the microphone."Michael: "You don't have to get into a commentary on the whole thing." dead. I feel like he's (Michael) the only person that shoots elevators that has a little bit of courtesy and common sense to other people.
If somebody farted in that elevator I would probably die.
Caleb Belcher my dad did once... I almost did
Caleb Belcher grose
Caleb Belcher I No Go to Elevator Here.
Caleb Belcher they have fans...
There are lots of ventilation fans in there
I'd be so claustrophobic in that thing. Oh my haha.
they ask you if you are scared of small spaces
1:42 here we go dieseldusy please wait for the doors to go

Skip to 7:44 if you only came to see the view of St. Louis
The very end!? Lol with next video blocks on screen. Thanks lol

caseyrook I hate to say this elevator looks scary I would not want to ride this thing
Man, you should have seen me on that thing a couple days ago! Both of my fears mixed together! Claustrophobia and Acrophobia! I was crying... ;(
Thats called living large..........were proud of you !!.
Aww shucks!
I was there 7 years ago
I fucked up by getting into this today, I have major claustrophobia and didn't think it through before getting in. I had a big panic attack, still trying to come down from it (panic). Never again.
Awesome Dude. Its called a cheap thrill . Were proud of you. wish we were there to experience it with you.
I was going to say that..I bet there are people who would go hysterical
Thank you for posting this. I always wondered what it was like in there.
I'm from Miami was visiting that area on Friday. I love going on all types of rides but this one not really. the elevator is a capsule to small you can not even sit up straight and if you suffer from claustrophobia not for you.
This really great. I just went up this two days ago. Clever using the flashlight. Now I can see what I previously could not.
Good lord, I'd hate to fire evacuate that building! You go in the same way you come out, it looks like it gets pretty congested there!
Jonathan Cantliff YES ! OMG
Thank you for sharing! I ALWAYS wanted to see how those elevators looked and worked and thanks to you, I just did! Hopefully someday i will take the ride for myself!

Thanks for this! I had been wondering what went on in the inside of the Arch!
Idk, is this traction or ropeless? It sounds like the motor is on top though.
It's really a nerve racking experience and first, then once you're at the top of the arch you start to chill
I started freaking out just watch this
Skeeler Mac I know !!!! I was wondering when the F would the thing ever stop ! So small and crampedS. I NEVER wanna get in that small ass elevator ! YIKES !!! Nah, I'm good. LBVS
Skeeler Mac Wait till you go on it
Yeah.....I couldn't do it. I'm good on EVER getting in that ! No thank you ! 😲😱
Dieselducy I like this elevator with numbers
it takes about 5 minutes to get up to the top and back down to the main lobby tickets are $15 each and you can be up on the observation deck for as long as you want
+Elevator Filmer Dominic Arnone haha dude this one time i was tripping with my man chip and the couple we rode up with figured it out pretty quickly so we started laughing and then
And then what??
You've left us in suspense for almost a year.
Out with it!
wish i went in there when i had the chance now im back in new york

Is the drive machine on the emergency elevator at the top or is it bottom mounted?
Me and a couple of friends are going to St Louis on Jan 29th for WWE Royal Rumble. We're thinking about going up the Arch the next day. I hope we do go up it, I've always wanted to go up it.
Why are there several different doors?
Hi all the this elevator if it takes a long time use another elevator for express to be enjoying yourself 😅
I went there today and sat in the same exact spot as you did :3
As the elevator moves, it sounds like music.
Man i have got to go to that place the elevators look freaking awesome.
Guys, can you tell me who's that girl in the Gateway Arch elevator video? 1:03
omgwtfbbq No.
Reading the comments it amazes me how many people don't know about the gateway arch!!!
I went to that arch when I was younger it was awesome but when I got to the top the wind was blowing so hard the arch shook...
Asthetikk I know I'm late but when the wind gets to high speeds the arch is supposed to sway I've been there before
Asthetikk i

I was there back when I was a teenager it was scary only been once never had a chance to go back but I want to again

I live 1hr. away from St.Louis Hillsboro,IL
This feel it's so small
Wow, I had no idea you could take a ride up there!

Where are the controls that send the cars up and down?
It's computerized.
@@DieselDucy Where do the people control the elevator, such as sending it and calling it?
it is automatic
imagine the button being pressed by an ai after a certain time
@@kristophia7310 So the operator doesn't push a button on some sort of console? Its programmed to go after a certain set amount of time?
@@Spaceshotx7 that is my guess but he might have a way to delay
"This thing feels funny..." Hahaha!
coolest elevator I have ever seen
From the looks of it, does this use a normal elevator door operator as well? Also are those bumpers (safety edges)? If so, wow it really is an elevator!
Andrew, are you from Saint Louis?
he was born there
if you want to see a small elevator, you need to come to kansas city and come to the kansas city power and light building to see the 1928 otis elevator!
Weird and small and seats😂😂
i've done this, but it's been over 20 years. i can barely remember it at all.
did ya know that cab 4 is a bit bigger and has better doors cab 1 has a window at the front well there was when i went there i think they took out those windows i dunno
for the record i live in the U.K. not USA i went to USA on holiday!!!
My family of six fit in one of those, i don't remember it being that small
I used to live in Arnold, MO. Remember all the times when family would come in from Detroit and we would take them to the Arch. Just remember one thing, don't fart on in that elevator.
cool elevator but whats up with the stairs in the middle of the elevator shaft is that for employees only
Emergency staircase
Awesome!
i rode in that same elavatar he got in when i went with my friend.
@dieselducy sony handycam is terrible of focusing the tx9 did a better job :)
Its an weird ride but the view and expirience it's worth it!
queue opening music to "speed"! Cool elevator, I so need to see it someday!
ThyssenKrupp would install some neat inclinators there - ones that are way faster.
How does it work
It's been a long time, but I remember seeing more emergency exits.
That takes for ever to get to the top.
That is an awesome elevator. Looks like a fun ride. Nice view too! :D
If there is a fire in the lower levels of the arc there is no way they could evacuate that many people without panic. That is crazy.....
Yeah but st louis fire department is trained for such an event I'm sure there's an emergency tunnel or something in case of such an event
1:06 i dont care you broke your arm lol first thing i thought when she said i dont care.
I'm going there tomorrow!
I thought it was a joke, but you really can go to the top!
What a cool elevator.
I didn't know you could go in there. Very interesting.
This elevator is unusual! I want to try it!
Good Vid!
I live near the arch I've been here it beautiful
OMG WHAT A TINY Elevator
It is small. Very small
Yes
Making me anxious just watching this. lmfao. I'm pathetic.

~Rosie
WOW, The best & weirdest elevator ever.
Great video to:) Favourited and liked:)
Are you going to any more places like this soon, I would love to see another elevator like this:)
Thumbs up for the man-powered elevator!
If you get stuck up there it has a emergency staircase
COOL!
It would be cool to stand on the stairs and watch that elevator go by.
I filmed the same exact video but just probably different elevator car
I got 2pictures of the view. I went to the arch 4 times. I live in st.louis
I rode up with a fat lady who was acting like she was going to freak out before we got on the elevator. Everything went great though and we survived the journey.
Sadly the doors in this video are long gone. I liked these doors better than what they have on now.
I went up there yesterday
no, no way I'm ever going that elavator
It sounds like a rollercoaster
I was afraid of it before!
i've done this trip before
I think some one was playaing black&yellow
id hate to ride in that thing. i hate enclosed spaces so much and i can barely take being in a normal elevator.
+Tanja the Talented (GiiForce) this is small lol.
good
oh my god "There is some wind entering the cab. So you might hear some wind on the microphone."Michael: "You don't have to get into a commentary on the whole thing." dead.

For real, I would be pissed off if I was the other guy in the video trying to record my experience and this idiot just keeps blabbing about elevators.
Taylor Montgomery
That’s Jacob you imbecile
I live right by it
World’s most unusual elevator!!!
There would be no way I would take the steps Id be done on just the first flight of them
I went on this I am scared of heights... I cried......
