Thanks for recording everything - including the shaft transitions at both ends, and other cars doing the transition. I think this is the first one I've seen without the guard plates between cars to avoid people stepping into the shaft at the wrong time.
It is interesting how the feel that they don't need certain things and trust people not to put their hands in obvious "pinch points" (like the drive chain as you go "over the top") nor do something as stupid as jump off in the wrong place! But with this design all you will do is drop a short distance into the car below.... Very Tight tolerances/fit & finish!
Another thing, Paternoster comes from two words in Latin, "pater" and "nostre," which means Our Father, the first two words from the Lord's Prayer. Interestingly enough, the paternoster resembles a Rosary.
While they are not "specifically" illegal in the United States, Chapter 30 of the International Building code and chapters 8, 9, and 11 in the National Fire Protection Agency's Life Safety Code makes Pater Nosters all but impossible.
Thanks for the very best Pater Noster video I’ve seen. I have been travelling Pater Noster in the Parliament House of Finland in Helsinki when I was a kid. My dad and cousin travelled it over but I didin’t want because my cousin told that the elevator goes upside down when it changes direction. 😂🤣
The paternoster is really a mix of two machines in one. It goes up and down like an elevator, but runs continuously like an escalator. Some have panels hanging from both above and below the cars. There are no doors on them. Each cab has a number for maintenance purposes. To clean these, you have to turn off the paternoster to get what they call the landing plates, and then to get each cab, you start and stop it, you turn it back on to bring up the next cab, and then turn it off to clean it.
We had something similar for the high-rise parking lot attendants when I grew up in Houston in the 60s. It differed in that there was no car. Just a belt you had a bar to hold on with your hands and a plate like a rung on a ladder for your feet.
Wow, this version has some safety margin space. I think i also saw another safety feature: when going up, those stepping surfaces have hinges, so maybe they move up in case something hits them (like a trap door)

Paternosters are really awesome! There is one in Berne I used to ride often as a child. But a few years ago they've modernized it an now it is horribly slow.
There is a paternoster lift at Loughborough college in the UK. It was actively used and loved by all there in the 1980's when I was a student. But sadly it has now been boarded over and not used. It really was a great system and very good at moving hundreds of students efficiently. I think it was about 7 floors. Such a shame it was stopped. I'm sure with modern safety systems and sensors it could be made safe
It's actually faster because you don't have to wait for it. That's why it's mostly in office buildings where people are hoping on and off very often, they don't have time for waiting. Many of paternosters are still used here in Czech Republic, it's not only for tourists, people working in that bulding are really using that.
To the best of my knowledge, there is ONE surviving paternoster in the UK (which if I remember correctly is at the University of Sheffield, and they also have some standard lifts as well)
This one actually seems alot safer than newer models because the cabs are more open so you would have time to get on or off and move your body parts out of the way

The paternoster elevator has multiple cars that runs continuously in a endless loop one side goes up the other side goes down the elevator cars do not have doors you have to step on or off at the right time why the elevator is moving
That's the only system I've heard of that works like that. s o it's like a rail car, or the st. Louis arch in some respects? sounds dangerous for someone who couldn't see it. So, the cars move up and laterally, or just up, over, and down?

@@sandromartelli If there is an automatic stop (laser beam), then it can be safe. Otherwise, one might lose his very brain, along with some other tissues.

Why are people from USA so scary by this? It's completely normal think for me as Czech. Did they remove all paternosters in USA because of safety or what? Some people must remember such elevators, it's completely normal technology from first half of 20th century, they must have it too in some buildings.
Unfortunately due to our liability driven culture, none of these even exist here. I think they are fascinating and safe as long as common sense is used.

I seriously hope they have a regular elevator for those who don't want to try jumping on and off this thing. To me the Paternoster probably wouldn't have survived long in the states. As it is the ones in Europe that are still operational should be shut down and the use of them discontinued as they are not by any means ADA complient or safe by any means. I mean I could see it happening someone missing the carriage and next thing that you know they end up falling in to the track way and then next thing the building owner is faced with a major law suit. The Paternoster is what I would seriously call a rea death trap.
There is something about the title of the video and the way he speaks that makes the speaker sound too self-absorbed and self-centred, specifically the use of the word “my”. Also I don’t think you are allowed at the bottom or top loop.

Darn lawyers, always blocking the paternoster...
....Especially lawyers who specialize in litigation involving the Americans with Disabilities Act.
I don't believe that would've been the case when they were installed, but civil suits really don't care about laws being enacted after installation.
Never mind the fact that this is a waste of electricity since it’s always running.
Everyone’s talking about the elevator but I just want to point out how beautiful Copenhagen is.

Seems much slower than a regular elevator.
Btw, interior of that building is very nice.
Yet the can move more people, as there are multiple cars moving at the same time at each floor
They are actually quicker at moving people, because the don't stop on each floor and the cars only go in one direction.

More dangerous too
Those guys are probably wondering why is he just riding it instead of getting off
terrified of stepping off too soon or too late. You have to time it just right.
How did they make this in 1920?
Juan 2009 Yes.
How what? They had cars and airplanes in 1920, this is just lift. :-D
Yeah looking back at my self this is a very simple system
Like a vertical chairlift at the ski hill!
I have ridden loads of paternosters myself, they are amazing!
Everyone want it more dangerous?Press 2× speed LOL

I agree.
In Copenhagen you will also find paternosters in the Christiansborg Palace (the parliament) and in the City Hall of Frederiksberg
Awesome! I have been to fredriksberg!
We had one in the Abrams Building, Frankfurt Germany. Hated riding it as a teenager.
They are interesting.
I don't know if I would ever ride one of these; doesn't look at all safe in my estimation. Still, it's a neat relic of times past.

Do they have any in Ireland because I may go on my high school trip to Ireland in May if I pay 1200$ they seem amazing great video
No that I know of. They are banned in the UK and very little have been maintained around the world.
They are not exactly banned in the UK but the installation of new ones have been banned since 1974.
There is one in Sheffield Uni.
There's one in the Sheffield university building that's 18 floors high

When a elevator car goes to the very top or bottom each car will loop around and go the other direction.
It is basically like a vertical escalator except it is a bunch of elevator cabins linked together instead of steps
Sounds almost like a feris wheel, though more vertical. interesting.
