Damn! I got this cassette for the Sinclair spectrum zx48k probably christmas '84 then 8 years old as an extra christmas present but on the label is said it was from my cat :) One of my most memorable christmas just because of that game. Good memories. Used to LOVE that game 👍😊
Oh the memories. So much nostalgia. Great memories loading these games on tapes with my friends after school and on the weekend… this and freak come to mind! I was a big Elite player on the bbc. Me and my friend would play together. I was the pilot and he was playing as the trader guy. What an experience!
I am 51 and still playing video games!
Thanks to brilliant modern programmers, I've become familiar with several ZX Spectrum games over the past couple of years. Jetpack, Jet Set Willy, Pyjamarama, Sabre Wulf, Knight's Lore...absolutely brilliant stuff !!! But back in the 80's the Spectrum was never popular on this side of the pond, so I had never heard of any of them...until now! Not on a ZX Spectrum, but on my 40 year old TI-99/4A !!!
So thanks to the original programmers of these classics from the golden age of gaming. But an ever bigger thank-you to the curerent generation of programmers who have brought the brilliance I had never known to my own library !
Christ! This is all locked in my brain somewhere. I just got an astounding nostalgia pang watching this. I probably last played it sometime in the mid/late 80s when I was just a schoolkid.
Wow remember playing this for hours in the 80s just to memorise the layout. Was only after I finished it o found there was a map released in a specy mag. Best game for me from the 80s still have my old spectrum and the game cartridge in the box. Must dig it out of the loft.
Man watching this has just unlocked a whole section of my brain that’s been dark for 35 years!
"Back then, all the graphics were drawn on tracing
paper. It was one of the most exciting things to
imagine a character, draw it, pixelise it, decode it
into hexadecimal, type it in, and finally see it animate
on screen. It may have only been a few pixels, but
what it represented was far more than the dots on
the display: characters from another world were
given a magical breath of life. If the character
was an adventurer, we shared in his adventures;
he may have only had a pixelated sword, but when
he fought the dragon, that sword became real
and we became sucked into the world."

Love this game so much. Good use of sound and colour and nice graphics. excellent game play as well. One of the great Spectrum games.
***** I see Sabre Wulf is coming to the xbox one next month, Rare Replay, it has a lot of the old Rare games on it like Gunfright, Jetpac, Banjo Kazooie and a load of other games.
RichardGeresHamster Now you see I know they changed their name to Rare but to me they will always be Ultimate Play The Game.
***** Thats right, i had forgotten that. I still have my old spectrum and all my games in a box here, it hasnt been opened in over 20 years, i saw something a few months ago about some company making a new revamped spectrum, but i dont know if it ever got made or not.
RichardGeresHamster It did. I won't buy it though as I have a perfectly good Speccy emulator on my PC.
Why did Nintendo not buy rareware!?
When this came out, it was OFF THE CHARTS it was so good. When Knightlore came out, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The Spectrum can do THAT???? Good times.
oh so many innocent 8'bit lives taken by this bloke's mad sword skills!!
Incredible how so many graphics and screen layouts were crammed into the small memory. I'd like to know how the tiling algorithm worked.
Wow! The new Jumanji film looks great!
Thanks for making that video. I never completed the game. That wulf still scares me now.
Me too. Could never find the whole damn suitcase.
Amulet!
@@Speccymemories need to find an Amulator (lolz) right now so I can try again.
This game was amazing, the graphics and effort to make so much in 48k, just great 😊
Ah the tears of nostalgia, Love this game, it's when Ultimate started those game changing isometric aka 3D games like Knightlore that they became bloody difficult lol. Games like atic atac, sabrewulf and underwurlde were actually acheivable, underwurlde was tough but I did complete it. Sabrewulf I could go on for ages building a big score.
I remember that game. I used to play it. I rarely made it to the yellow cave
The greatest speccy game ever. It really was a master class on how to best utilise the hardware for an arcade experience in the home. Colourful graphics, plenty of enemies with variations and power ups to help you on your way with no pace killing multi loads. The zx is the best port due to the inertia sabreman has as he moves.
Watch out for the natives. When they start to flash yellow, and make a noise, it means that they are lined up either vertically or horizontally with a piece of the amulet. Of course working out how to actually GET to the thing is where you're on your own ;)
The amount of time I played this as a kid and never spotted that!! Thanks! Probably just put it down to colour-clash!
Is this true? Does it happen anywhere in video?
@@Speccymemories - 2:39 It certainly looks like this is true!
Blimey, cheers for that..I've been playing this game since the 1980's and never understood that! I'll give it a try next time I play.
It's true!
Cant tell you how much enjoyment I got from this game and considering its 48 kilobits, just staggering when a simple photo runs into 1000s of kilobits at least.
Happy days.
Whatta you doin' on here sunshine?
LOL, I remember that chime when you gather a piece.
First game I ever beat. I was 24 back when this was released. Im still gaming now.
What a great company Ultimate were. Atic Atac was a classic.
Awesome! Great trip down memory lane. I loved this game.
Back in the day, the Stamper brothers were geniuses. Everything they touched turned to gold. I wish their games were available today on the play store
The game looked so realistic back then... still does :)
sabre wulf was my favourite game.i think the idea of it is great.i see it as tribal, jungle plants etc. not aggressive like today's graphics etc
Holy cow. This game was my everyday obsession on the floor in front of a crt tv 👏
I couldn’t recall the title until now. Thanks!
I remember getting this when it came out and playing it to DEATH at my grandma's house. I finished it after a couple of days and was so excited she let me call up Big K Magazine and tell them it was done and what the next game was called. They humoured me and told me that as far as they knew, I was the first to complete it and they sent me some posters. LOL those were innocent times.
Thank you! You made it look so easy.
what a GREAT game!! I´ve played it for hours in 1984. Thanks for sharing this!
I bought this as soon as I saw it on sale in my local Boots. £9.95 was a bit of a hike in price. All their previous games sold for £5.50. Very enjoyable game, though, and plays a lot smoother than the BBC and Amstrad versions. I only completed it with the help of a map printed in Personal Computer Games magazine. Used to think the yellow orchids were useless, but they do give you a chance to scratch your nose etc.
Thanks for this, I've updated the video description with a link to your vid.
Thanks for the video. I used it to help me beat the game on the Rare Replay Collection.
Great gameplay, it took me much more that 10 minutes to complete this classic. Fond memories...
Classic game indeed, the joystick made quick work of it
Same for me. Took many hours to get through it. I always got lost. Only completed it after one of the spectrum magazines of the day published a handy map. No internet back then.
Not to be confused with the Killer Instinct character. This is where his name came from! 👍🐺👍
Looks like the computer games I played in 92 at school
this was basically Atic Atac in a jungle setting. class game tho, ah the memories
Is it possible to redefine the keys in this game? My excuse for not completing it was the fact I had to use Q as left, W as right, E as up and R as down etc
Unfortunately not!
So this is where the name of the KI character came from...
Great video!
How can you finish the game to 100%?
*How much* this game is similar and different from Robin Hood?
The ticking is somehow hypnotizing
the game is now available for the xbox one in the rare replay pack :)
Blast processing before blast processing
Best game ever on spectrum i thought. And not aggressive either more tribal.
Forgive me if I bring this up again, but it's just not fair!! Nintendo should have bought rareware.
why is there no sound on any of your videos RZXArchive. It's a while since I've been on but last time (about 18 months or so ago) I watched, there was sound on all your walkthroughs and tutorials
Jason Marshall Hi, there is sound on this and other videos. Don't know why it's not coming through for you!
I have my speakers on, my computer volume all the way up, I've no idea why it's not there.
there is sound on some of the videos but not on all of them. I've no idea what the problem is. Is it a region issue I wonder?
What was the other game that was similar to this, both visually and in sound? Firelord? Curse of ......? Something??? Anyone remember? It looked really like this.
Hi. Firelord and Robin of the Wood were both similar to this, and walkthroughs of both can be found on this channel.
Cool thanks, i'll check them out :)
Wizard's Lair by Steve Crow (who also made the wonderful 'Starquake' looks like a combination of SW and Atic Atac. Good times, good games :) Hard as nails though.
Ending music I always found depressing for some reason.
I heard this game has 255 screens of map. I mean 255 in 48k RAM.
Close enough, it's 256 :) . Yep, pretty amazing for only 48K.
oh I forgot the first one, you are right! Its 256 :D There was some programmers back then.... Not like todays drag&drop and connect the dots "programmers"
Wow, not even a congratulations screen, it just tells you to buy the next game
Not a bad game I played it on rare replay on Xbox one I know I got so lost 😅
Ultraaaa Combooooooooooooooo!
Eh?
If you dont know this particular reference. allow me to enlighten you.
Sabre Wulf is basically a character that appear in the fighting game Killer Instinct, which was known for the quote that I have mentioned.
Bassling96 Also, Sabre Wulf and Killer Instinct were made by the same developer, Rare. ☺
Ah, I understand now. Thank you :)
(belated) *SUPREME VICTORY*
Who else is here from Banjo Tooie?
This game is simmilar with MIRE MARE
NINTENDO! WHY DID YOU NOT BUY RARE WARE?!
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!?!?!
wat
Why did you not buy Rareware?! NINTENDO!!!!!!?????
wtf are those long arm yellow things?
Play this game online: 128bit.com.au/#50300
Great game but witcher 3 has got much better graphics
The fuck is wrong with Nintendo for not buying this company?
