The slow service is a cultural thing. Eating "out" is a social event, chatting, laughing and relaxing. It can be hours so service it tuned to that
you are right unlike most Americans who eat and leave, people in other countries enjoy visiting and enjoying a leisurely meal.

@@Roskeystravel We always book a table fo,r 6.30pm, for 7pm...Gives you time to have a drink, peruse the menu before you order, also if you've any dietary issues, you can give the kitchen notice....
Culturaly we Brits are not hurried along when eating out , if u book a table it's accepted it's yours for the night 😊

The service isn´t slow. It is to allow you to have a pleasant, unhurried meal.

Service was a little slow, ahhh welcome to the UK. We do not do American service because our servers get paid properly and we expect a slower service esspecaly in pubs.
Of course the sun is shining you bought rain boots our weather laughs at us.

We don’t want people rushing us through our meal so they can get more people in and therefore more tips. We like the social aspect of eating out, unhurried and with time to actually enjoy our food.

You are so right! And thanks for watching!! We realize meals are slower and meant to be enjoyed and not rushed. Last year in Italy meals would take hours. But our server seemed a little off, he dropped a tray of drinks, forgot our appetizer, never checked back to see if we wanted more drinks or desert then after we were ready for another drink k and he never came back, my daughter went up to him and asked for the check. 30 minutes passed and he still never brought it. So my husband went up to him and asked if we could pay our check. I definitely think it wasn’t their normal level of service and we would go back as the food and atmosphere were amazing!!
The experienced traveler like this always know when its time to retreat into a cozy inn for food and drink.
Not slow service, its designed so you get a chance to enjoy the ambience, speed eating is an alien concept, just relax and absorb how a mature country takes its time.. 😅
They often wait till you finish first drinks before they come back so they can ask you if you want more drinks
In Britain eating out is a social activity. Unhurried, and waiters are not trying to maximise their tips. You are a welcome guest, but you will not be constantly intruded upon. Conversation will not be constantly interrupted, you are not an item on conveyor belt. You will come to appreciate it. May I suggest Americans would also benefit to train a bit as walking is also more pleasurable if you are accustomed to it. 3 miles up a steep hill is a leisure stroll to Brits whereas 100 miles is a really long car journey. There are lovely walks between these villages. Suggest a worn in pair of walking boots and lots of light layers as British weather is changeable. It is literally possible to get snow sleet rain and t-shirt weather in the same day.
Lucky you did not get a changeable day, as you missed out the hail I also had on one day walking in England in April!

I can’t comment on your particular experience at the pub but most British people would find the typical American service as overbearing and intrusive so there’s some cultural difference as to what is good service. unless you’re in a genuine hurry, just sit back and relax and enjoy the occasion

And i do agree that it could be partly on us as being Americans and there being cultural differences and i don’t want to say anything bad about an establishment but i think maybe our server was new as he forgot things and didn’t return to see if we’d like more drinks or desert which we would have. Then even after it was getting late and we asked for our bill he forgot to bring it. but id still go back as the food was great and the atmosphere was amazing and everyone has an off night, whether it was him or us because we were tired.
Shame you went in such a rainy season, but on the plus side it must have been less busy. It still looks beautiful and i hope you all enjoyed it.
thanks! I can’t imagine how beautiful the area is on a nice spring or summer day. But traveling in the shoulder season, we just went at the start of March, you often get rainy cool weather. But it was still a magical place!!
Shock, things are different outside of america 😮. People enjoy a slower pace of life and meals are a thing to enjoy and talk and relax. Its not all rush rush hurry up and get out we need the tips
We do enjoy the different pace that life in Europe brings. We spent almost a month in Italy last year and dinners were long and enjoyable with drinks and conversation. I think we were just so tired by the end of the day after traveling all night and then sightseeing all day. It was our own fault that we were ready for bed.
I live in the East Riding of Yorkshire ( which is pleasant enough ) and would love to live in the Cotswolds. I never counted the number of times I`ve been there - as none of us living over here would. So I begin to count : I am 200 miles away from Chipping Norton and every mile closer would cost me about £3000.
We wanted to go to Chipping Norton but i’m trying to be better about knowing my limitations and not over scheduling. So next time for sure! I can only imagine how wonderful it is there on a nice spring or summer day!!!
Maybe you are unaware but the church door you stood by was what inspired J.R.R. Tolkien to write The Lord of the Rings. 💍👑

Nice video, i love the Cotswolds! i have been a few times and visited Bourton on the water which i loved. If you do come to England again and you haven't been already i would suggest going to Bath it's a lovely city imo with its Roman baths.
The Counties of Devon, Cornwall and Dorset are lovely in the South West with some lovely coastal towns. Cheddar Gorge In Somerset is also worth a visit it's where Cheddar cheese is made and comes from.
The Lake District & The Yorkshire Dales are another lovely part of England in the North. I hope you had a good time here.

I love slow service, it usually means the food is being cooked fresh, hence a big Mac takes 3 minutes
i do agree - we had just been done eating for awhile after a lovely meal and asked for the check and it didn’t come so we had to ask again after a bit of a wait and we were getting tired after a long day. But the food was delicious and worth the wait! i’d go back, we loved the atmosphere and food.
If you visit again during the summer the rain will be warmer .......honest 👍

I had heard that. It saddens me to think someday those trees will die and how the magic will be lost. It’s such a simple thing, just trees planted next to the door but it created such a magical feeling.

It’s a shame you didn’t go inside the church (or maybe you did but just didn’t film it) because it’s absolutely stunning.
Sometimes i forget to film bc we are just enjoying the moment and filming on our travels so still so new to me.
We always have rain in this country but this year we seem to have had more than our share, roll on summer.
Summer 2023 was one of the wettest on record (I recall 2007 being record breaking wet too). Yes, I hope it is better this year, least of all because I got zero tomatoes last summer in the garden. They all rotted!
Certainty not typical, blame the Atlantic storms , but hey ho, the rivers / reservoirs are full , trouble is we Brits forget that half the World would like to be able to say that 👍
I wonder how many tourists Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm gets? I went a year ago and it was surprisingly really good and everyone was up for a chat.
Lol, by the end of your trip you will have eased into relaxed eating out, its about enjoying the company and the food not a quick refuel
thanks so much for watching and i do agree it’s not just about eating but about the whole experience. i think it had just been a long day as we traveled all night then hit the ground running without ever really resting. ( kids fell asleep for about an hour and we had to wake them to go to dinner. The food was amazing and the atmosphere was great. We really did enjoy ourselves. Sorry if i didn’t do a good job expressing that. it was just taking a long time to get our check even after we requested it. i think he forgot so we had to ask again as everyone was tired.
You did an amazing job considering you threw yourself into "action" straight from your flight. Hope you enjoy the rest of your visit at a more leisurely pace.
@@Roskeystravel Best 'quick refuel' is to go into any supermarket - even a co-op, which you're likely to find small branches of in tiny towns - look for the 'meal deal', and select your favourite things. You will get a 'main', a snack or dessert, and a soft drink. I like a falafel wrap, or tomato & mozzarrella pasta, with a millionaires shortbread and a can of fizzy elderflower; there's usually a good choice for a set price of around £4. It's a nice tasty lunch for very little money, and you just find somewhere to sit (in a bus shelter if it's peeing down!) and eat at your leisure. Best on a nice day of course, a ready-made picnic to eat somewhere picturesque while you watch the world go by.
Apart from sleeping, walking around in the (very) fresh air is the best thing you can do with jet lag, I find. It’s horrible feeling like that, and you all did well to push through it. 😊👍

I’m sure- a nice sunny day and flowers in bloom make everything look better. But it was still beautiful in the rain in its own quiet peaceful way.
Why do Americans come to the UK in winter ??? . They would enjoy it more in the spring (May) it also shows off the countryside better
If you are only going to the UK once, I'd agree. Spring there is glorious. I have been many, many times and my favorite is January. Less crowded, cheaper and the weather there is much better than in Chicago. My least favorite time to go is July and August unless you are visiting friends out in the countryside.
We came when we did because that’s when my son’s university was on break and that’s where he wanted to go. His friends whooped it up in Mexico and he chose to travel with us to Europe so we were thrilled! Bad weather doesn’t scare us. We live in Michigan, and lived in Minnesota for 8 months, none of which was summer. So cold, rain and snow we are used to. we loved it so much we’ll be back another time in warmer weather! The Cotswolds are not known as "THE area of outstanding natural beauty" but as "AN area of outstanding natural beauty". There are many areas designated as such throughout the UK.
You are right. we’d love to go back and spend more time enjoying more of those areas!

So the house at 3.07 is the haberdashery shop in the film and you will see a line of young ladies crossing over a small bridge with handrail which should be in your video,my wife and I think it’s the best Emma film we have visited the Cotswolds many times but it’s easy for us because we are English enjoy your film and take care you have a great family

We’ll definitely be back. we came during the winter because that’s when our kids were on a school break.
@@Northstander - She’s young, only in her 20’s i think she thought - ill need comfortable walking shoes. She soon found out she should have packed any of her many pairs of boots. Luckily she found some really cute boots to buy and hopefully learned a life lesson.
The Cotswolds isn't THE Area of Natural Beauty, jus A one. AoNB is an official designation for lots of areas - it tends to limit what can be built, so it doesn't spoil it. (You can still build, but it has to be sympathetic to the local style and appearance. Plans must be approved [as anywhere, but in an AoNB they're more likely to not be if they're crass, like concrete walls or a flat roof].)

So many!! London was lovely but i would go back to England just to spend time in the Cotswolds. But i have more videos still to come of our 11 days there. We went to Oxford, Canterbury, Dover, Richmond and London and loved it all!!
I know this sounds morbid and morose, but when in the church yards, do you ever read the inscriptions on the tombstones? Depending on where you are, you might find a famous, almost hidden away grave. Some of them go back a long way too, probably before the Pilgrim Fathers eventually left Plymouth. So they pre-date the landing in the US.
Agree i tried not to show to much of the graveyards as to not be disrespectful but we love walking through them and looking at the headstones and learning about those who came before us.
you did well considering you had bad jet lag. there is nothing worst than jet lag. it can leave you feeling disorientated with a strong overwhelming urge to sleep for a week. like bears in deep hibernation kind of sleep lol.

You couldn't have picked a better locale than the Cotswolds. I studied at St.John's College Oxford, but of course the entire area, that is the Cotswolds, encompasses three Counties - Warwickshire, Gloucestershire & the aforementioned (West) Oxfordshire. The most attractive aspect to this region is the quiet solitude; cities are all fine & well, but it's difficult to really find a slower pace of life; in the various hamlets that you visited, you will, no doubt, have found a more peaceful, tranquil environment. I do hope that you enjoyed your visit !
Id love to go back and spend some time just in the Cotswolds. The quiet, sounds of nature and the beauty and magic of the old buildings, and grounds made me feel like I was in a fairytale.

I'll explain the situation to you, because the area is very attractive with the stone houses and pretty villages, the rich upper class English people have bought out the locals and turned the villages into snobby ghettos, they treat the real locals like the peasants of old, Bourton on the Water has changed, 40 years ago it was like the other villages, then they changed it into a tourist trap, to keep the tourists away from the nice villages.
i america the want you in and gone because thats how they earn their tips, in the rest of the world thye get paid a hourly wage so no need o rush. tak your time sit and relax
If you would have come to England on a rubber boat across the English channel from France, you get a free hotel and stay forever.....gr8

it was so small inside we didn’t realize there was seating upstairs and we thought we could sit outside. which if everything wasn’t soaked we would have. So i saved my treat and drank my coffee as we walked around.
So pleased you visited and enjoyed this part of the Cotswolds.
Did you know that St Edwards Church, North Door you were photographed at is rumoured to have been J.R.R. Tolkien's inspiration for the 'Doors of Durin', the west gate of Moira that appears in a scene of The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring!
The North Porch was built over 300 years ago and its documented that two young yew sapplings were planted to enhance the entrance Today these same trees act as architraves to the door!
J.R.R.Tolkien was a Professor of Old English for 14 years at Merton College, Oxford and was known to have visited the Cotswold and he liked Stow in particular. Rumour has it he was so taken with these doors that it inspired him to use them in his book of which there is a print of the doors that depicts them perfectly ......... although it's as yet unauthenticated!
i had heard that from another viewer but i did not know ahead of time. But i can see why. the simple act of planting trees close to the building most people would say is a bad idea because the leaves of resting on the roof and the roots too close to the foundation. But i’m so glad they did it so many years ago because it gives off such a storybook, magical entrance feeling. One lady who came after us was taking pictures pretending to read a book in the doorway. :) thanks so much for watching and for sharing what you know about the area!!!
