Bizarre, as usual, like many tourists, you did not visit the east, called 'Anglia' where the Angles settled, the original Germanic settlers on the Island and the place where England evolved from and where it got its name from ( even though Germanic settlers were a mix of Jute, Frisian, Saxon, Franks, etc. The counties, Norfolk and Suffolk, where that Kingdom, the borders have hardly changed in 1000 years. The city is Norwich. Incredible to miss this. Missed out on that.

Well done mate - we have had the wettest 8 months on record and I can say that never mind the tourists, the locals are pretty sick of the flaming wet stuff! But you definitely showed some true grit getting around! 😄
It’s been the wettest winter since the early 1800s apparently. Never known anything like it. But you did come in winter, so it was always going to be grey and wet at times Mr!
The side of the escalator/side of the road thing isn't a contradiction. For one thing, you could say, "On the road we move forward on the left, whereas on the escalator we move forward on the left," and the contradiction disappears. But in any case, the reason is the same one: the predominance of right-handedness. In medieval times people passed each other on the road on the left-hand side so that their right hand could draw a sword should they need to, which is the origin of driving on the left-hand side. and when it comes to escalators, people who need to hold on to the handrail will mostly want to do that with their right hand.
I have read that it was Napoleon who change from driving ( a carriage in those days or a troop of cavalry)) on the left to on the right just to be different, and all of Europoe followed as France had invaded most of western Europe anyway. . We Brits did not. We stuck to the old ways.

I agree. Well done to see so much and so many different places in our wonderfully varied country. Come again some day . Try Scotland too , and Wales. When in Stratford on Avon did you not notice the Royal Shakespeare Theatre by the river?
The black cabs are not much more expensive but what sets them aside is they are safe. They legally have to take you a to b with no detour to c and for women they have been properly vetted. Don’t use Uber.
Hmm, maybe the pricing depends on where I'm going and per city? Ubers were relatively affordable and I'm been used to Ubers or rideshare apps coming from the states (don't really use taxis back home), so I was more comfortable sticking with what I was used to.
black cabs are extortionate and that have to take you anywhere is a rule they ignore, try getting one to take you deep into south London no chance getting them to go to the Elephant used to be a bloody hassle
Rubbish! Never had trouble with an Uber, and you know in advance how much you're committed to. Black cabs are great, but the tab can be eye raising after traffic problems. And Uber will attend in the suburbs, too. Try getting a black cab outside the centre - and good luck with that.
This was awesome, can't believe you fit so much in in that time! Ps if you come back, you will for sure find better (and fresher) fish and chips at the coast 😊
One of the best tourist videos of my country I have ever seen. I am now 89 next month and have lived in the far South West of England for the last 40 years. I see many changes as you go around the towns and cities that I knew, a lot more art displayed these days which is good. Looking at the trees in your photos it's winter or just before spring - it rains here in winter and particularly spring. Rains summer too but not quite so bad and it's warmer. It is what makes our green and pleasant land. Funny though, first two places were where I lived when young, Windsor and Oxford. Bath I know and Bristol is an hour up the road from where I now live. I lived for some years in London where I met my husband 54 years ago. I would like to say you chose some very good places to go to such as Canterbury and Cotswolds, all beautiful places. Liverpool is fun, loved the football. Only went there once because I wanted to take the ferry on the Mersey. I’m glad you enjoyed your visit, I enjoyed your video as I can no longer travel, old age has got me in it’s tentacles. I will look out for further videos from you, thanks for coming to see us.
This is so wholesome Julie! Thanks for sharing - loved reading your experiences. Greatly appreciate you watching and observing the many changes around the towns and cities you've visited. Wonderful to have you - cheers!!
I went to London in October several years ago. I actually like the cold weather. I don't like the heat, especially when there's no air conditioning. I understand that a lot of buildings in the UK don't have air conditioning, so I think I would have found it uncomfortable to visit in summer.
@@BomberFletch31 I don't like air conditioning in shops, so cold. Very hot weather is still rare in UK and if it does come it doesn’t last for long. Rain and low pressure is what it is mostly like, which is bad for an old lady with arthritis like me. This year it has rained and rained but if you look around the world it seems to have been the same in many countries. Floods everywhere.
The traffic lights are the same as the US for stopping - green, yellow, red. The difference comes for going - red, red and yellow together, green, whereas in the US it goes straight from red to green. Didn't want people coming to the UK thinking that if they see a yellow light it means get ready to go when, on it's own, it means the exact opposite. And those white cliffs at St Margarets Bay don't really do justice to the actual white cliffs of Dover. If you want to experience them close up, there are walks along the top of them, giving you good views across the English Channel.
"The weather in England kind of sucks" It looked like you where here in winter based on what people were wearing and you know, none of the trees having leaves on them.
March .Plenty of daffodils and spring flowers . And ,by the way ,the lush green of the UK is often noticed . That's because of the rain ,otherwise we would be like Arizona
I realise the lack of holiday time in the US forces short holidays. However 2 cities a day is insane, you didn’t get to experience anywhere properly. I would have recommended 5 cities in 10 days so at least you wouldn’t do every day travelling. For those who are not aware he will have been in each city about 2 to 3 hours maximum as each train journey would have been 2 to 3 even 4 hours,, only time really to take a photo and that’s no time to get to know a place at all.
Thats true Diane, this was the time I booked for myself and I wanted to cover a lot of parts of England with my railpass. A few-several hours per city sounds about right. If I had more time here I definitely would have taken my time better. Appreciate you watching!!
Traffic lights do use amber in both directions Red light: Stop Red & amber lights: Prepare to go Green light: Go, if the way is clear Amber light: Stop, provided it’s safe to do so Red light: Stop Also, It rains more in Paris and Berlin each year. You were unlucky. When the sun is out it is gorgeous.
You may think of England as being a bit on the 'wet' side but apparently, if you commute to work everyday to work on foot, you will only get rained on 17 times in that year.
Though other places in Europe, like Slovenia, have a higher average rainfall. Portugal has as much rain as much of England but the north west has the highest rainfall.
@@ramadamming8498 Can confirm that Lancashire is the wettest county, no matter what those Cumbrians say! Have to laugh when the met office declare "droughts" after 5 days of dryness. What about the other 360 days?!
It's commendable that you travelled to so many cities. One of the best travel videos of England by a tourist. If you want spicy food in the UK go for a curry; we love curry.
What a thorough video for only 30 minutes. Don't worry about the clouds, it's authentic. It reflects the reality of a pretty country with some of the coldest temperatures in all of Europe and the resilience and good nature of the people.
England doesn't have the coldest temperatures in Europe! We hardly ever even get a frost in the south anyway...! It's nearly always cloudy though. Alas.
Your question at 7:00 about why drive on the left but stay on the right on escalators, I think its just because most people are right handed, instinctively we hold onto the handrail with our right hand so keep right on the escalator
Wow, 40+ years as an Englishman and only just realised we do this wonky compared to how we drive. Driving on left dates back to Romans. Easier to mount your horse from left and defend yourself with a sword using your right arm. Countries later influenced by Napolean changed to right. Americans drive on right in part due to the French influence but also because they would drive their farm wagon horses with their whip in their right hand whilst riding the back most left horse. You probably saw more of the UK in 10 days than some of us brits ever have! 😂
I am so glad I stumbled across this video. I cannot believe you managed to get so much done in just ten days. You saw so many places. I love London, quite an admission for a northerner from Durham) but I've lived in Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester too so it was great to see you've visited those places not so many tourists venture to. You can with all honesty now say you know England so much better than the average American visitor. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
It's strange but you do know that getting wet doesn't make you ill or for that matter, make you dissolve. Imagine all those kids getting ill every single day, all day, because we played Football, proper Football, with our feet, in the rain! A tip for anyone visiting England. If you are going to "Visit" as many Villages, Towns, Cities, in a day as possible and only look at the more famous attributes on show, just so that you can say "Been there, DONE that" and not "know" the places that you "Hit", is rather akin to trying to hit on as many women as possible in 10 days! You don't get to "Know" them, you don't get the vibe, you don't get the full ambiance, only fleeting glimpses, fleeting memories and, maybe, remember the names of some of the best sights on offer! !
Of course that is true but for someone who is only here for a short time , they will have a better idea of the country if they visit many places and not just thde basic tourist centres. But even such places on the tourist route like Stratford or York wil give a better idea of the country that stopping in London all the time.
As for the escalators, I always assumed it was because most people are right handed so it is natural to hold on with your right hand thus leaving the left side for passing
This winter and early spring has brought much higher rainful than usual... I would suggest late spring and summer for warmer, sunnier days when the trees have leaves, flowers everywhere and a much nicer time to visit but well done all packing as much as you did in!
The Brits don't help themselves by perpetuating the myth that it's always raining. Some parts of the UK are indeed very wet but that is the west and North west because of the prevailing wind off the Atlantic. However London and other places in the south east England are drier than many European and US cities. I worked in Munich for a couple of years and it's far wetter than south east England. I went to the US a few years back and my wife said to a Boston local that its always raining in the UK. Boston MA has 20 inches more rain annually than the city we live in in south east England. It is however very cloudy in the UK which I think may be another factor in this misconception.
Essex has the same annual rainfall as Morocco! You get a lot of cloud at times. However this winter and spring has been and still is VERY wet, we are all fed up with it! So sorry you had a poor example of fish and chips. They can be wonderful if the fish is very fresh, good quality potatoes are used and you put on plenty of salt, malt [ or pickled onion ] vinegar and tomato ketchup.
This is true but we don't get heavy rain that often. The rain is light but spread over more days of the year. However... I do live in the North West and it is definitely wetter!
You did absolutely the right thing Robert. There is *far* more to England than just London, interesting as it is. Places like York and Bath are also steeped in centuries of history and heritage. History is everywhere in England Robert. Not far from me, there is a private school in a small town on the fringe of the Yorkshire Dales. It recently celebrated it's 500th year... Leeds is England's second largest financial hub after London.... It's great you enjoyed your visit Robert. Feel free to come again.....

I live in the UK and have NEVER heard of the BritRail Pass. Turns out it's completely unavailable for citizens of the UK, which is pretty depressing considering a trip to london from where I live (which is only 2 hours away) via train costs me over £100 per person. God I wish I could travel anywhere, but as a citizen here, it's hard to even explore my own county, let alone the country :[
@@RobDeMann Naa i mean there’s annual passes but they’re only for trips between two stations (for example, London to Manchester for work) but there’s no deals, so a pass like that would usually cost up to £17k or so annually

Windsors not a city, it’s a town, towns have town halls, cities have cathedrals . Don’t get Fish and Chips in London, get them in a fishing port , then they’re fresh and delicious.
Yes it is not very logical. While the presence of a cathedral does appear to increase the likelihood of a not very big place being a city it doesn't mean that it will be one.

The weather in England can be depressing at times but we don’t have dreary weather all the time but we do have blocked weather patterns when it rains a lot. But that can work the other way too when we have long periods of dry weather with blue skies and sun. Also, when you said England’s weather is like Hawaii but without the rainbows? What people ignore is that we are an island in the north Atlantic ocean and subject to several weather patterns from different points of the compass especially the North and East.
@@1justme True what you say, U.K. weather can be extreme sometimes but not always. Without jinxing things, tornadoes, when they happen in the U.K. are not extreme like the United States. The north of the U.K. is generally more cold and wet, with more chances of snow in winter, while the south of England where I am is usually more hot and getting hotter and wetter if that makes any sense with climate change. Today was a beautiful day where I am. And since the clocks went forward by 1hr recently the daylight hrs are lasting longer, in preparation for spring and summer.
Got to say, visit an Island on the east of the Atlantic Ocean, in winter and you’re surprised it rains? Sorry about the fish and chips. For me the best part of the country is the coastline away from the cities. Because of the varied geology from the recent ice age to 4 billion years ago in Scotland, the coastline is constantly changing. And there is a public path that covers the entire coastline. Further along the south coast from Dover at Seven Sisters you can walk right up to the base of shimmering white cliffs of chalk.
When the Guards wear grey and the leaves have left the trees you have to expect rain here. Try May to September it is usually a better chance of a dry day.
We always say St Patrick's Day in the UK and in Ireland, not St Paddy's. In fact the term Paddy is sometimes regarded as an abusive term when used towards Irish people. My grandad was Irish and would not have liked to hear anyone refer to the day as anything other than St Patrick's Day,

Ah ok, thanks for explaining Mark!
Glad I checked the comments first as I was going to post the same thing 😀
You beat me to it.
I have read that it was Napoleon who change from driving ( a carriage in those days or a troop of cavalry)) on the left to on the right just to be different, and all of Europoe followed as France had invaded most of western Europe anyway. . We Brits did not. We stuck to the old ways.
That was a great travelogue. You managed todo so much in the time.

Yes wish we could have access to BritRail!
The UK weather is never inappropriate...ONLY THE CLOTHING WORN! 🙂
True words spoken!
@@RobDeMann uber is on the verge of being banned AGAIN in London for really bad practices.. Black taxi cabs are much safer
black cabs are extortionate and that have to take you anywhere is a rule they ignore, try getting one to take you deep into south London no chance getting them to go to the Elephant used to be a bloody hassle
Rubbish! Never had trouble with an Uber, and you know in advance how much you're committed to. Black cabs are great, but the tab can be eye raising after traffic problems. And Uber will attend in the suburbs, too. Try getting a black cab outside the centre - and good luck with that.

I agree...Great video.. its nice to see how others see our country...❤
This is so wholesome Julie! Thanks for sharing - loved reading your experiences. Greatly appreciate you watching and observing the many changes around the towns and cities you've visited. Wonderful to have you - cheers!!
I agree it was a good video to show English cities x
Thank you for exploring our country, beyond London. And your photography and editing are first class.
Wow, thank you! Appreciate the love. Thank you so much for watching, cheers 🍻
Appreciate the explanation! And yes good point about Dover - it was last minute so not very well planned as you saw haha. Thank you for watching
"The weather in England kind of sucks"
It looked like you where here in winter based on what people were wearing and you know, none of the trees having leaves on them.
You're not kidding.....grey windy and miserable most of the time and it's getting worse with a changing climate.
We have the best climate , but the worst weather! Never too hot nor too cold
March .Plenty of daffodils and spring flowers .
And ,by the way ,the lush green of the UK is often noticed .
That's because of the rain ,otherwise we would be like Arizona
It does seem that the winters are getting milder but wetter.
@@trickygoose2 Windier too...we never used to have this many storms or floods.

Alas.
@@geoffreystephen6840 I looked at a heat map for overall temps. I think the sea makes it colder.
The reason for on an escalator you pass on the left is so the stationery people can hold the rail with their right-hand of course
Your question at 7:00 about why drive on the left but stay on the right on escalators, I think its just because most people are right handed, instinctively we hold onto the handrail with our right hand so keep right on the escalator
Makes sense!
Appreciate the love Barry! I still have much to know about England haha. Another time for sure. Thank you for watching, cheers!!
Rain don't stop no fellow traveler! Appreciate this.
Of course that is true but for someone who is only here for a short time , they will have a better idea of the country if they visit many places and not just thde basic tourist centres. But even such places on the tourist route like Stratford or York wil give a better idea of the country that stopping in London all the time.
Best comment here. This guy is a dork, as are many of the commenters. He knew Nothing when he came and he left still knowing Nothing.
As for the escalators, I always assumed it was because most people are right handed so it is natural to hold on with your right hand thus leaving the left side for passing
Makes sense, thanks for watching Tracey!

This winter and early spring has brought much higher rainful than usual... I would suggest late spring and summer for warmer, sunnier days when the trees have leaves, flowers everywhere and a much nicer time to visit but well done all packing as much as you did in!
Yes for sure! This was the time I was able to go but I'm pumped out to visit again another time. Thanks for watching, cheers!
Thank you for clarifying this David! Much appreciated.
It's true, I lived in SE England for 10 years and I didn't find it particularly wet at all, lnfact summer from May to Sep is perfect.

Not necessarily, Map Men did a video about it. Some cities don't have cathedrals and some towns have cathedrals.

@@1justme True what you say, U.K. weather can be extreme sometimes but not always. Without jinxing things, tornadoes, when they happen in the U.K. are not extreme like the United States. Haha it's hilarious because I was just in Liverpool hours before the game and then I sat with the the Man United fans. Yes I definitely was cheering for Man United, not like I had a choice 😂. Good thing we won - amazing experience
I live in Wales and have several brollies. 😂. That's why Wales is so green, it bloody ☔ all the time.
BROLLIES!! Is that for umbrella? Thanks for watching James, cheers!
Yes it is. @@RobDeMann
I left England when l was 25, moving to Canada, from l travelled the world on business. Your new trip brought back many memories. Thanks for sharing your journey of discovery.
Thank you so much for watching! Appreciate you sharing this information 😌
I live in Shropshire and I enjoyed watching to get an American’s perspective. Yes the weather this spring has been pants! Sorry about that but I am glad to hear you enjoyed your trip despite this. There’s so much more too see, come back soon, you are welcome! Best wishes from England!
Appreciate the love! Thank you for watching Alison, cheers!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this ,your enthusiasm and energy and your humour , come back soon and do another, maybe next time when it's sunny .Cheers mate !
Appreciate the love Paul! I try my best haha. Thank you for watching
Thanks for the information Stevo! Appreciate you watching!!
Oh wow, what an intense trip! You took so much in. Glad you liked Bristol, it's one of my favourite places in the UK
@@holnrew thank you!! Bristol was beautiful and wholesome 🥹. Definitely recommend
When the Guards wear grey and the leaves have left the trees you have to expect rain here. Try May to September it is usually a better chance of a dry day.
The rain was no bother - had a super time in England!
We always say St Patrick's Day in the UK and in Ireland, not St Paddy's. In fact the term Paddy is sometimes regarded as an abusive term when used towards Irish people. My grandad was Irish and would not have liked to hear anyone refer to the day as anything other than St Patrick's Day,
Ahh I understand!! I was not aware of that so apologies. Thanks for the clarification
@@matt01506 oh yh that's where the cheese is from
@@RobDeMann Don't listen to him, I'm from Liverpool and we refer to it as Paddy's day.
When walking as a pedestrian on a road you should walk opposite side to driving so you can see the oncoming cars and whether they’re going to hit you or not
In York you missed the Yorvik Experience and Railway museum. York museum and Gallery, etc.
Yes I did; I passed by a lot of them but I didn't have the time to actually visit inside unfortunately.
IF you think the weather in England sucks remember the whole British Isles is north of all of the contiguous Lower 48 US states and also Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. In fact Juneau, Alaska is on the same latitude as Ullapool, Scotland. Newcastle, England is also on the same parallel as the southernmost limit of Nunavik territory in Quebec.
Thank you! Appreciate the history lesson
I've just been to the Cotswolds and visited Bath while I was there.
Beautiful places, innit!
You did well, you saw a lot of England.
Your travel log was great, a great mix of you speaking, natural sounds, text explaining some scenes. It was well paced.
Appreciate the love John! Thanks for watching!!
Cracking vid, really enjoyed it, thank you.
Cracking, innit! Thank you.
Im amazed you went to so many places, well done and hope you return to see other beautiful and historical places.
Thank you for the love! Appreciate you
Grate video mate, and the addition of some metal music had me smiling
Thank you Patrick! Appreciate that you like the choice of music
Great video. thank you for sharing
Thank you so much for watching! Appreciate you!!
The weather in England sucks - what did you expect when visiting during the coldest months of winter? (!) duh (!)
Haha 🤣 catch me in the summer 😎
@@RobDeMannsure there will still be rain
@@RobDeMann , if you look on a map ( one of those things made from paper ) you'll find from approximately Leicestershire / Derbyshire up to Scotland there is a line of big hills down the middle of England these are called the Pennines , the two main countys that are separated are Lancashire and Yorkshire ( war of the roses ) , because of these hills it's damp and because of this that's why most of the cotton was spun in England here , hence summer is better unless you love walking then it's brilliant anytime on the Pennine Way and on either side up to the lake district ( Cumberland ) and Northumberland ,
Still he did catch the football match , he wouldn’t have got that much later in the year. Incidentally we don’t get quite as much rain as you think. Pleased you enjoyed yourself but that was one helluva schedule for a 10 day visit.
But look on the bright side. It only ever rains on days ending in AY.
I'm not judging you for having ramen in England but I am judging you for going to wagamama...
Haha yes of course not the best option. I went to the one in Bath because it was the nearest in the pouring rain. Judgement taken though😂
@@RobDeMann hahaha! Great video man, glad you had a good trip! If you wanted great ramen or hot pot you should have got some when you went to Bristol. Also I would recommend coming back to Bristol in the summertime and if you have more time just spend in the city as it's lively, if that is your sort of thing.
We use ‘fancy’ e.g ‘I fancy a coffee’ ‘I fancy a movie tonight’ …it’s when we haven’t yet attained it! So you can’t say ‘I fancy England!’ Cos you’ve already been there! Great video, I enjoyed!
AHHH no way! That's very helpful. Thank you. I heard a guy saying he fancies a girl so that means he hasn't gotten the girl yet haha
@@RobDeMann That’s right, you got it!
Oh and I'm sure I walked past the guy in the beanie playing piano in Euston station on Friday 5th April?
Great vid. Liked the bath joke
@@jimdavies2386 thank you Jim! Haha it was the worst dad joke ever 😅. Thank you so much for watching cheers! 🍻
