They're not wrong. It IS filled with cliche and overused tropes. It's just that the execution is so well done that it works really well and is such a joy to watch.
I loved how the dad went: "Ghost in the Shell. That's an ANIME." Can't really argue with that lol.
You're probably better of staring them with anime with more mature themes. Like Deathnote, Attack on Titan, or Psychopass. I bet your dad would love Psychopass. Maybe even FMAB or Hellsing Ultimate.
But I'm sure soon enough they'll warm up to MHA. It's such a well executed underdog/coming of age story that you just can't help but to be drawn in, inspite of all the tropes and cliche.
The fact is what MHA does is starting with cliches to always subverte them in a way or another.
So it's natural they feel it cliché. Especially the first episode (I thought that too). Most of the first season is like that.
Davide Golia Its natural that they feel cliche because they are. Personally I feel like mha is a just a lame ripoff of naruto. But the show in general is just a bundle of cliches.
I completely agree. I didn't think I'd like it at first, because I'm not a fan of cliches, but they really did make it work. The story is truly in the characters. I think they did a good job of taking a cliche and giving it a new angle.

It's cliche, but that's kind of the point. It's supposed to be.
I actually don't typically like dubs, but this is the one show I actually prefer watching in dub just because the voice acting is pretty good for most of the characters and English fits the more western-style superheroes anyway. I have no idea why so many people are suddenly hating the dub, it's actually one of the better ones.

People are hating on the dubs because they are dubs. Not because of the quality. A /LOT/ of dubs are really good. But people really want to hate on dubs just because it wasn't Japanese.

We know from the start where we'll go with these kinds of stories, but it's the journey and the author's storytelling that's what people enjoy and look forward to.

No worries here either! I truly want to see how they view it, my dad is one of those people that loves to guess how stories will end. I think he'll find that it's not as linear as he thinks it is.

So many dub haters in these comments, just because something may not be as great to you as something else doesn't mean it's trash.
I personally don't like the dub, i think it has no emotions in it, but it's my opinion, everyone has a different one..
That said, I honestly think it's the dub version for his parents sake.
The dub is more friendly for them I think, but sub is always gonna be better, it stays 100% true to everything, the original is always going to be better people have to accept it, it's like watchung rick and morty in french, of course is not going to be as funny and great as it is in english, the voices are unique and irreplaceble
Angelo Actually, I bet the French prefer it in French. Same as I prefer English to Japanese screeching. Emotion is in no way clear to an English speaker other than how loud it comes out of their mouth.
Drek Is KrEk I'm a native spanish speaker and i prefer watching rick and morty in english, the jokes are meant to be in english, there's cultural barriers to jokes and humor, that's a fact, as well as i prefer my hero academia in it's original language, if you knew how to apreciate art you'd understand, if you don't pay attention to detail, you're closed minded, prefer style over substance, and like simple and vulgar things, there's no point on discussing this
This is great to watch, I really like the viewpoint of someone who wouldn't normally watch it. It was like if I got my parents to watch it, but that'd be a family debacle knowing the language and content

I prefer dub becouse I carnt read and know what is happening on the screen at the same time, I also find it easier to know the emotions the characters are feeling rather then the Japanese. Also I heard dekus Japanese voice, he sounds like a 30 year old man when the dub dose sound like a teen. But I do know why people like the sub and thay can like that. I don't care about the sub vs dub, I prefer dub. Some prefer sub, carnt we all just enjoy the anime and get along
