    Really good advice. I learned recording with tape machines a long time ago and now that I'm retired I've decided to learn to use Garageband just for enjoyment. Lot of same principles apply but one huge difference is having basically unlimited tracks. I had a Tascam 3440 1/4" 4 track at home and did some recording with the Tascam 80-8 1/2" 8 track and bouncing was a seriously challenging task :)

    I would like to see a video on how to use reverb effectively.

    • @rpdigital17
      @rpdigital17 7 лет назад +1

      I would describe effective use of reverb as using it with a good taste. You should use it on the "center-located" tracks like vocal and drums, and with a low level, like you do not want to ruin your soup with too much salt, right?

    The ringing out is so important, especially for live acoustic instruments. Ideally the entire song should be played in one take to there is continuity and consistency between sections allowing the natural ringing-out or resonance of the instrument between verse and chorus etc. Great video 🔥🙌🏾😎💫

    Thanks for the help, don't think I would've known to value every word until I learned the hard way but now I surely know that you speak absolute truth! 🔇

    HI bro, thanks for your guiding videos!!!! I'm soon to release my music channel here on my birthday and soon to release my 1st song cover and you really helps me a lot on this. Though i am done and satisfied on my first and currently working on my 2nd song, I am having a hard time on it's drums part and I ended up on a mixing question. In garageband interface there is 2 volume rockers (1 in the left for each track and 1 on top which is the main). Im confused but Im sure when each of them turns from green to red it means that its clipping right? and it means that it is too loud right? Should I match the volumes in the right to the volume at the top so it will sound better or its not necessary? :) still a newbie, still a lot to learn :) thanks!!!!!

    Hey Lewin, great stuff as always. Question, I recently lost access to my email in garage band. Is there a place you would suggest I go for some help as I need to send files.

    top down mixing is a common technique a bit of light eq and compression and a bit of tape saturation is common to have on the master bus when mixing. not tracking so much though

    Great video! Huge help! I've been wondering about testing your audio tracks after export in all different stages. Do you want to avoid software equalizers? Do you want to A/B test those? For instance, I felt great about mixing a track. Sounded great on my laptop through headphones then took it into my car and...not too much, too thick of a bass sound. Any tricks, videos or thoughts on that?

  • @yolhanson

    I'd just add to the reverb comment that reverb is often lost (hard to hear) when all the instruments are going. I find this especially in live rock bands: you test each mic (one-two, one-two) and the reverb sounds fine. Bring in some bass, drums and guitar, and suddenly it's gone. I suppose I'm guilty of over-compensating and pushing it quite high in the vocals. I rarely use it on bass or most of the kit. Guitarists quite often have in in their pedals, and you'll have the devil of a job getting them not to use their pedal boards. Snare can sound great with some tasteful reverb.

    How would I see the input levels on a software track? I do A LOT of software instruments (I record synthwave) and I want to make sure he levels are perfect

    • @GaragebandandBeyond
      @GaragebandandBeyond  6 лет назад

      TheActualCanadian Typically software instruments have preset levels which are pretty much ideal.
      However if you are using GarageBand I understand your predicament. If you check out one of my newest videos about “free plug-ins” I recommend one in there that will give you actual decibel increments.

    Mixing and Mastering includes making a voice sound better?

  • @RosieVyMusic
    @RosieVyMusic 7 лет назад

    Thank you so much for the info!! I have a stupid question, how do you only edit just 1 single, individual track and not influence the other tracks in Garage Band? This has always been my problem. I would edit my lead vocal and then next thing I know all of my other tracks are edited the same way, which is not what I wanted to do! So frustrated...

    • @GaragebandandBeyond
      @GaragebandandBeyond  7 лет назад +1

      +Rosie Ng Pham that is a strange problem… If you are running garage band 10, I would recommend deleting it and then reinstalling it. Don't worry it is a painless process, you will not lose anything important.

    Thanks for the info! I have a question I can't get an answer to though; after I record a song, and I go back into it, more and more, the tracks that I reopen ONLY has the TOP part of the recording on the stem. The recording, the 'life line' sequence going up & down signaling the vocals being recorded, when I pull the tracks up later, its only going up, there's no down, and everything sounds like its comin from the left ear, none on the right. I don't know how to bring it back or restore it to the full sound, no one has an answer. Can you help?

    I want to record my voice over a karaoke MP3 track and use headphones (to listen to the mp3) and the built-in mic (to record my voice). When I record my voice, you can hear the music playing in the background on the voice track. I don't understand why it is so, because it seems impossible that the mic would pick up the music into the recording vocal track, since I am listening to the music over headphones. I can't find any solution for this on the net, please help! I want to be able to listen to the music while I sing (record), but have a clean recorded audio track with my voice only, without the background music.

      1.You can use special headphones, that don't let any noise out.
      2. You can lower the volume of the mp3
