I can use most DAW programs, I use GB for videos because it is the most universally used beginners program with Mac users and that helps get the views. However that all being said, I still use GB a lot. The reasons being, I am fast on it, it does everything I want it to and it sounds really good. I have never found a limitation in GB for my needs.
This is extremely helpful. I've been using GarageBand for 3 years and still make tons of mistakes. I'm really trying to work on it. Love the channel by the way!
Damn, every time i watch these videos i just learn more and more and look back at my old projects and think what the hell was i thinking! But i've been working on a project for the past 4 weeks and it sounds unbelievable, completely different than my old stuff and i wanna thank you dude, you're an amazing teacher! Big ups!
Every music-making-advice channel should have a beginner's guide, and all of those should prioritise telling producers about the importance of high and low roll-offs. Well done.
This is i think the best tip ever to make your garageband mixes really good throw off what you dont need start with this always!! ..Thanks for posting this!!
It really depends on your taste, your room, your preference. I can say that if you find your mixes to be bass heavy in general, than yes turn it on. Either way, you should turn it on and see if you like it or not!
This is a good tutorial for beginners! I know it's been quite a while since this was uploaded, but I'm just going to drop by with my opinion; I think you're using the word "Mastering" wrong. Although it's nitpicking, I think it can help to know that mixing is the process of setting levels AND audio processing with EQ's and similar. Mastering in professional terms often mean going into a separate program with only one track (the master track) and compressing and EQ'ing to make sure the sound level is competitive and the separate frequencies impact on the track is similar. Simply put its about making everything be equally loud WITHOUT individual MIXING. But it's just a small detail. Very good explanation on HPF's and LPF's btw! Super important to get that right.
Well you need to have powered monitors of some sort and you definitely should have Studio Monitors and not home stereo speakers. You should look at my "Home recording Studio Shopping List" on my website. Check out the link in the "More Info" area of this video!
I just wanted to say even though I've been doing this for years (auto didactically) I have learnt a few things from you in the past 30 minutes that could potentially make my rap recording sound a lot better. I got my new macbook a few days ago and one of my goals is to start recording again. Was doing random research on how to make my vocals sound more professional, bumped into your channel and I really dig it. You know your shit and explain it very simplistically. Thank you =)
Thanks for another super-helpful vid! I am a beginning recording artist, any tips for gain levels and amp volumes?? A cranked gain gives me the output i'm looking for but at the expense of transients. Thanks, Michael.
Hey my Bro...thanks so much for the great tips!...i would like to find out though, is it correct to say that compression makes instruments/sounds sit better in the mix (i.e. allowing them to be clear & audible in mix given that the EQ is well done too)...if yes, then does everything in the mix need some compression?...
Hey Hey Hey, I absolutely love your videos! I was wondering if you would do another video highlighting the "arrangement" section for the drums. Like using the labeling to tell the "drummer" what the parts are (verse, chorus etc.) I got them put in but there seems to be inflexibility moving them around, changing them or deleting them (without loosing the music underneath) THANKS MAN KEEP UP THE AWESOME VIDEOS!
Hi Lewin. I know this is about Garage Band and recording equipment, but do you have pointers and opinions about live sound equipment/set-up? I presume you have opinions since you play out a lot.
your videos are great. I use garageband just to record demos then I pay alot of money when I record the songs in a real studio... wish I could do that my self... thanks for the videos. :)
Closing your eyes and listening for each instrument is something every newbie should do. Over time you will get accustomed to frequencies (and their sweet spots in the mix), and one big thing. LESS IS MORE. EQing is an abused art form. So just tweak here and there, and listen to entire mix when you make changes to hear it in the context that others will eventually hear it in.
Great Vids Lewin. Your passion for the craft is awesome! My question is, how do you save a modified vocal tracks settings for fast access on future projects without having to constantly tweak. Had trouble finding this on your vids. Thanks
Hey Lewin, I have an idea for a "beyond" type video... Do some GarageBand recording/mixing on the iPad. I use Nuendo for my regular DAW, but play around with GarageBand and an Apogee Jam on the iPad when I'm noodling around with ideas away from the studio gear. Cheers.
Thank you for the video, Lewin! This is one of the trickiest parts of recording for me. I have a beginner level question - just the other day found out my studio monitors have a bass boost switch. Would engaging it be a good or bad thing when mixing/mastering?
I'm not sure if you already have a video and I haven't found it yet, but if not please could you do a video just showing how to use garage band and the really basic stuff. Thx
Hey! I just started a solo music project and am doing everything by myself. Recording, producing, everything. I was just wondering if I could send you one of my finished songs that sounds "finished" to me and maybe give me some tips. That would be a great help. I would really appreciate it. Thank you!
Hey, I'm working on my senior project, and the project is making an album. What tips do you think I could use to record vocals, guitar, bass, brass, wind instruments, and basically all orchestra instruments?
Hey Lewin, Ik this may sound like a dumb question, especially w your username having Garageband in it, but have you ever considered making the jump to Logic? I'm just curious about why you've always used garageband and I'd like to know your input on this topic. Thanks, Jake
Hi what mics do you use? Brands model numbers and prices and freq range and why ones for voice and other for instrument. Also the mic difference for home studio and stage.
hey garageband and beyond..i really love ur videos and the content u put up..is so helping and worthy..i was just wondering i really want to learn mixing from a to z(i mean everything).....where can i learn mixing and mastering right from the scratch..plz help me in this..i willl be very grateful to you...btw watching almost so many of ur videos..learning so many new things..thanx
I really enjoy your videos. All are really informative and well produced. My subwoofer goes down to 15 Hz, so please move your bass cutoff down five cycles =)
I've only recently discovered your videos, but I'm really learning some great new stuff :) So, thanks :) But anyway, I wanted to ask if you could make a video on how to get a good clean guitar sound? Somehow, I've just not been getting a good clean sound. They always come out either very tinny or sounding really "closed off", like they have some kind of cut off filter on them. Thanks :) And again, great videos :)
Have you ever had that feeling of: "Humm... This guy is talking to me!" I know it just means I am making the same mistakes as most newbies, but I picked up at least 3 things I gotta pay attention to in my next mix. I've been mixing with headphones only... Studio monitor headphones. Monitors are on my shopping list but I've been postponing it... I guess I must get them sometime soon if I'm serious about making my mixes sound better, right?
good points, but to high pass a bass guitar at 150 hz is way too high , then you're getting rid (!) of good information, I wud rather recommend cutting at 30-50 hz , and if u're hearing too much bass , use "low-shelf" or bell-cut to decrease it. Most importantly, make sure u spend time on the recording process to avoid mixing with a bass djungle.
+garagebandandbeyond Thanks for the info. Was wondering if I was to record a live track out of the mixing desk, and then ad vocals and a few intricacies later, would I be able to get reasonable results by eqing the master track? Thanks.
Great stuff! But Help! How can I use a filter for one track and NOT as a master filter? Everytime I try to add a filter for a voice or guitar track it filters the whole project? Thanks much appreciative D
This is just an idea. You could upload the tracks in wave of that song with no processing and a do somekind of a mixing and mastering contest. That would be awesome...
Great tutorial! Question: How do you set a low pass filter for a particular section of the song and is it possible to create a transition? Looking for that muffled Drake sound, but also want a smooth transition out of the filter. Also, is it possible to use the same "fx" option on desktop as there is on the "loops" mode on an iPhone? Thanks!
I tried recording acoustic guitar using Logic Pro 9, basically for the first time about a week ago. Sounded like crap no matter what i did - i used my Røde NT1a mic, i'm really wondering why the heck i didn't think shaving of the top frequencies! I especially had a lot of "pick" sound - will this go away when removing treble?
So basically I wanna get some cad 4-piece drum mics (80$), but I don't know if they're any good. Never used drum mics...any recommendations??.....My equipment is an Akai EIE Pro Interface. 4 xlr inputs only so I'm pretty limited.
Whats a good USB mixer with a built-in interface? if they dont have good ones, whats a good interface and mixer for 2 krk rokit powered 5's a phantom powered mic and CADMH310 headphones?
This is not a critic, but maybe a silly question: If most of speakers cannot reproduce songs lower than 20 Hz and above 20kHz, so why these frequency ranges should be removed?
Pro Tools might be harder to learn. One plus for Pro Tools is that if you ever want to take something you've done to a professional music studio, chances are good that they are using Pro Tools as well, so you can just hand them your entire project.
Hey, if i want to get a midi keyboard do i need an audio interface? I have a really basic home studio with a blue yeti usb mic. I dont have a studio monitor yet but im getting one soon.. I just wanna make sure i get what i need and not more. Thanks!
Hi. I enjoyed your video :) However, I have GB 10.1 and also Logic and I don't see these filter option in there. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks
Hey thanks for video - i just got a new MacBook pro with an updated version of GB i hate it all my music does not come across and it looks a lot harder to use filters and settings on each instruments what do you recommend

I've never used Garage Band, but always found a wealth of useful info here. Thanks for all your efforts!
Every music-making-advice channel should have a beginner's guide, and all of those should prioritise telling producers about the importance of high and low roll-offs. Well done.
LaQuota Famefarm thank you! I have tons of other videos too! Please check them out!
I have them all! I love the T-Racks system, can't go wrong buying it.
I love watching your tutorials! Very informative!
Your videos are such a big help for us small time musicians just figuring it all out
Ana,
There is a brand new Garageband that got released last week! Check it out!
I'm glad you like the channel!

so AWESOME. Thanks for reminded of the great filters in garageband!

Excellent! This stuff is very important to create a clean sound....
thanx for the tip! i often use the EQ to shave unwanted noise.

Really get a lot of useful info from your video's. One question; where are the mixers?
Hey my Bro...thanks so much for the great tips!...i would like to find out though, is it correct to say that compression makes instruments/sounds sit better in the mix (i.e. allowing them to be clear & audible in mix given that the EQ is well done too)...if yes, then does everything in the mix need some compression?...

I have already!
Hi Lewin. I know this is about Garage Band and recording equipment, but do you have pointers and opinions about live sound equipment/set-up? I presume you have opinions since you play out a lot.
You are such a huge help, thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.

Good stuff man,low and high cut filters are the wands to make magic happen in the mix. :-)
Brilliantly explained! Thank you !
Hey my man, great stuff here, thank you for all the info, quick question, can I master using GarageBand on my iPad?
I'm not sure if you already have a video and I haven't found it yet, but if not please could you do a video just showing how to use garage band and the really basic stuff. Thx
"EQ is your best friend" when it comes to making your mixes sound "Clear!"
I hear you LOUD and CLEAR on my end Lewin! =)
Hey! I just started a solo music project and am doing everything by myself. Recording, producing, everything. I was just wondering if I could send you one of my finished songs that sounds "finished" to me and maybe give me some tips. That would be a great help. I would really appreciate it. Thank you!
Thanks! This answered questions I had five years ago.
Hey, I'm working on my senior project, and the project is making an album. What tips do you think I could use to record vocals, guitar, bass, brass, wind instruments, and basically all orchestra instruments?
I would live to see a list of plugins you use. Just so I don't have to fish for plugins that I don't even know are good or not.
Which is better GarageBand or ProTools ?
Please answer !
Hey Lewin, Ik this may sound like a dumb question, especially w your username having Garageband in it, but have you ever considered making the jump to Logic? I'm just curious about why you've always used garageband and I'd like to know your input on this topic. Thanks, Jake
Excellent video. Do you "shave the fat off" during recording or only during mastering your track/song? Thx!
Greetings from the Netherlands.
During the mixing stage I try to do as much as I can.
Thanks for your reply.

I really enjoy your videos. All are really informative and well produced. My subwoofer goes down to 15 Hz, so please move your bass cutoff down five cycles =)
It'll be worth looking at how to improve your room acoustics too btw, over wise having monitors will be a bad thing.
please review something with the T-Racks 3! I got it from a bundle and would really like to learn how to use the basics of it. teach me your ways haha
There is no real answer to that question. Work with what you have! I like drums in bigger rooms personally.
i'm digging the song, Lewin! any chances we can download it or buy it anywhere?
Oh! And what program are you using to record and make those things???
Nice sound and tempo sounds way better.
I've only recently discovered your videos, but I'm really learning some great new stuff :) So, thanks :) But anyway, I wanted to ask if you could make a video on how to get a good clean guitar sound? I see KRK in so many studios, even top studios at times too
We use Garageband
Hey Lewin - I like your videos and enjoy your tips.
What about new videos about Garage Band 10 ?
Greetings from Hamburg/Germany,
Andy

Good idea? orr?
WHATKIND OF SOFTWARE IS THAT MASTERING
THINGS ,,, GOD BLESS
Just wondering if you have tried Studio One from Presonus?
How do you deal with piano sound? It has the widest sound range among other instruments.
Great videos, thanks for the tips! Also, you look like Mike Meyers. Party on Wayne!
+tyusb party on Garth
when hes singing he puts the sounds he makes
Dude, is there any difference techniques if I'm using GarageBand on Macbook Pro?
You are a great guy lewin :). Thanks for all the videos !
You definitely need proper monitors Paulo! It's time... you're ready.
What's a good starter recording software for a PC?
Same can be done with simple EQ no?
I''m using Garage band version 10.1.6. I don't see those filters. Why not just use the EQ?
You sir are a genius!
So basically I wanna get some cad 4-piece drum mics (80$), but I don't know if they're any good. Never used drum mics...any recommendations??.....My equipment is an Akai EIE Pro Interface. 4 xlr inputs only so I'm pretty limited.
TO FIND THE FREQUENCY RESPONSE RANGE: Select the track. Apply the Visual EQ. Open it, then check off "Analyzer".
Stumbled across your channel yesterday. Very useful information! I'm always looking for mentors would you be interested in helping my out?!
I think both are great but in some way garageband is easier, still it´s my favorite.
I really like to see you use logic.
Can you tell me the best room dimensions for recording drums please ?thanx
Hello I want to have my own studio in my room but I don't know how to and dont have that much money.
Whats a good USB mixer with a built-in interface? if they dont have good ones, whats a good interface and mixer for 2 krk rokit powered 5's a phantom powered mic and CADMH310 headphones?

Isn't the treble reduction just a low pass filter?
Did you release your cover of that song? I absolutley adore it
+Adam Watts no I never did.
+Adam Watts but thank you!!
confused about where bass reduction and treble reduction are in GB10
Pro Tools might be harder to learn. One plus for Pro Tools is that if you ever want to take something you've done to a professional music studio, chances are good that they are using Pro Tools as well, so you can just hand them your entire project.
hi im a beginner and im going to buy the scarlett 212 studio bundle and it comes with everything but can you buy any speakers and connect it to them?
Hey, if i want to get a midi keyboard do i need an audio interface? I have a really basic home studio with a blue yeti usb mic. I dont have a studio monitor yet but im getting one soon.. I just wanna make sure i get what i need and not more. Thanks!
Wow! Mastered version is much different.
Hi. I enjoyed your video :) However, I have GB 10.1 and also Logic and I don't see these filter option in there. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks
hey, I use a condenser mic. and my recordings sound like crap. sounds like it was recorded with an old phone.....what can I do to improve?
Hey thanks for video - i just got a new MacBook pro with an updated version of GB i hate it all my music does not come across and it looks a lot harder to use filters and settings on each instruments what do you recommend
Just wondering which T Racks version do you suggest or use?
Thanks!
Which Software Should I use for this Music Editing.?
when you say a cheep microphone could i use a sm57 for vocals starting out as i bought one just for my acoustic?
