It remains the perfect empty (or new) nester choice; people for whom the GL will be just too much--more than they need or want, but still wanting more space and refinement over the RAV. I'd highly recommend they up their RAV4 game considerably to fill the gap, if not with 3 rows then at least in the touchy, feel-good department. My first SUV/crossover was the first gen Highlander, fabulous vehicle (w/ an optional 3 rows!)...and as the RAV4 was growing closer to that anyway (but still shy by at least a couple inches in length, and especially tight elbow room and small seats), several years ago I recommended to a Toyota exec that the next (now current) RAV4 be that "exact" vehicle (1st Gen HL)--dimensionally and features wise, of course with updated styling, safety and tech. Maybe the idea for a next gen HL should be as the Passport's equivalent-- ie, dedicated 2 row Highlander.... but I still harken back to the goodness of the first gen HL which was essentially that but with optional (and occasional use) 3rd row.
I like them offering both. The regular is nice for people who want something smaller than a Pilot or CX90 and who only plan on using the third row from time to time. As a two row vehicle it is a good choice.
@@almassengale very well stated and a lot more succinctly than I! Definitely a place for both. With the GHL available now, I can actually see them trim the regular HL down a hair, maybe back to the previous gen which is what I have (slightly smaller/trimmer).

This should've been the back row and storage configuration of the Sequoia! Waiting for a midcycle refresh because I need a good towing vehicle. Make it happen Toyota!
Thank you so much for this review and tomorrow's! I've been waiting for this one to compare it to the new Pilot. I especially appreciate you providing the pricing so that I have a good idea of what the incremental amount would be to get a hybrid 3-row SUV.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Our review tomorrow of the gas model is actually of the XLE base trim. We rarely get to drive the base model, it comes well equipped and it's an 8-passenger vehicle.
I test drove both standard 2021 Highlanders and went with the ICE vehicle. My understanding is the 2.4L is also used in the Camry hybrid and was down 40 hp compared to the ICE, so it was working harder than the 6 cylinder. We also have an earlier model Hybrid Highlander with the V6 and it’s great.
I also went from the earlier 2017 Highlander V6 hybrid to the 2021 2.4L hybrid…they really tuned the newer ones well as it feels just as powerful to me as the V6.
Same, I wish the bench seat was offered on all trims as well. We asked Toyota about this and they say it's all about weight and towing capacity. Higher trims have more features and since you carry less people they can keep the weight down. But, Honda seems to do it on the Pilot so I don't see why other manufacturers can't do the same.
Price-wise the top trim Grand Highlander isn't that far off from the top trim CX-90. I realize there's a huge size difference, but if you want comfort and performance and don't necessarily need all the extra space, which one would you buy? The GH is more comfortable on the road (the CX-90 is more of a driver's car if I can say that about a 3-row crossover.) Which one is quicker? Probably this GH. So crap. I don't know. Have to drive them (duh).
I really wanted the regular hybrid but it only tows a maximum of 3500 lbs... Gotta go with that Hybrid Max for the full 5000 lbs unfortunately; which makes it too expensive to start. I like the extra 25 cubic feet of space over the CX-90, but I can't justify that extra cost so the CX-90 is the one I'm going with.
@@henryhonda8408ironically I ended up going with a couple year old Mazda CX-9 Kuro Edition which only has a 3500 lb towing capacity. Getting excellent fuel economy with a beautiful red leather interior. You were right in that the hybrid is more than adequate with that rating. I'll rarely (if ever) need more.
Despite the variety of SUVs/CUVs offered by Toyota, they’re definitely more diversified than the Big Three and are better situated to weather any economic downturn.
Yes only the base trim gets it but the XLE comes really well equipped. Our review of the gas model drops tomorrow at 12pm PST/3pm EST and we drive the XLE model, it's really good. The only thing I missed was the panoramic sunroof which you get on the Limited model.
@Andrea Spencer Driving Rav4 Hybrid for a year, I am sold for the Hybrid tech. Grand Highlander Hybrid feels best for the growing family. Waiting for your reviews with in depth information, as always :-)
You say for long haul the hybrid Max is the way to go, but the MPG's for long hauls, is going to add up. City / Highway is a pretty big difference between to 2, and in our case we won't be hauling anything so, the base hybrid seems a better choice and it's been around a lot longer? Limited Hybrid is what we are considering
You both look so good in Hawaii!! Zack with his shorter haircut(nice) and Andrea and her amazing wardrobe!! what a power couple😊😊 OH and the Highlander is beautiful too!!
Thanks for another great review. I felt the Grand Highlander is what most consumers want and need. As Toyota always done their R&D right, on their products. While Mazda is an emotional choice with CX-90, Highlander and G.Highlander are rational choices. Along with new Corolla Cross, NX and RX, Toyota and Lexus have another winner on their hands. For those who want better interior material quality, Lexus "Texas"..haha...TX will be the one to buy on the same architecture.
What packaging constraints Re only the 6 speed would fit in the Hybrid Max (HM)? HM uses the same engine as the base 2.4L turbo does, and it fits the 8-speed auto. I know there's more stuff under the hood of the HM - I wonder by how many inches did the 8-speeed not fit?
I'm with you - don't need a third row but I do need to accommodate 5 adults on occasion and need as much cargo space as I can get. Even when folded down, you can see they're eating a lot of space and, of course, they add extra cost to the vehicle as reflected in the price.
Do you know if the 2nd row captain’s chairs are removable? We may have 4 kids, 3 in car seats that we would like to put in the back row and remove one captain’s chair for ease of access to the third row. I haven’t heard anyone mention if the 2nd row captain’s chairs are removable or not.
Does the sunroof (at least partially) open? Does it have a complete screen cover if you want to block out the sun during the day? Since some cars have a fixed piece of glass, and others open, this is something that would be helpful you covered during your reviews.
Great review as always, Andrea and Zack! your energy in this was exceptionally high, lol! not sure if it was the tropical Hawaiian climate or the vehicle itself, loved it nonetheless. looks like it's going to be a stiff one between this and the 2024 Atlas! I'd have loved to see a slightly more radical design though, Toyota played it safe; and that hybrid max is pricey!!!
Yes, the Hybrid Max Platinum is pricey for sure, but only a little bit more than the top trim of other 3-row SUV gas models. So that's something to consider, at least you get a hybrid. The Mazda CX-90 PHEV top trim including freight and delivery minus levies and fees is $66,345 CAD. Vehicles are just getting more expensive but they have so many more features and tech now.
@@amyhyde5988 Our review of the gas model drops tomorrow at 12pm PST/3pm EST and guess what, we had the base XLE model, we rarely get to drive the base model. It was really good, I like the new 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder.
@Andrea Spencer , so what's your suggestion, I am deciding between top end CX90 PHEV vs Grand Highlander XLE Hybrid. CX90 phev offers very less features in base trims so I have to go with top end. But Grand Highlander XLE Hybrid has decent amount of features for my need. Specially 2nd row bench seat. Which is not offered on top trim CX90 phev. Which one you suggest.
Does the 2024 have the space ship sound/speaker when backing out of the garage or cruising through the neighborhood less than 20MPH ? I have a 2021, and that sound is ridiculous when backing out of the garage. Yeah, I know, safety issue.
For a senior who drives 200 miles in one day; just once a week and rest would be city drive. Which car is better fit? Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid or Mitsubishi Outlander Phev? Fuel economy is important of course. Also, what would be the availabilities for these two cars? Thanks.
When you say every model comes with a temp. Spare tire does that include the hybrids? I thought the hybrid battery was taking up the rear space so I’ve been confused on that. Does for example the gr. Highlander I’m cle trim have a spare too? Thanks.
Hi thank you so much for this great review. Can you please compare the interior space of the sienna against this, especially the third row seats? I ordered a sienna 8 months ago and the delivery date is unknown. Really like this grand highlander but i need to carry adults (seniors) in the 3rd row so need to find out how it stacks up against the sienna 3rd row.
@Andrea Spencer Sienna it is. Now the real question is how much longer do I still have to wait on top of the 8 months that I've already waited lol..thank you so much!
I would say this vehicle is a home run! Granted the prices of vehicles are just going higher and higher but that's what the bank of Toyota is for 😅. You can tell that this was designed specifically to compete against the bigger SUVs in this category but with more engine options as Zach said. The base hybrid model seems like the winner though. I wonder how long the wait will be to get one.
You guys are the best, I am trying to figure out how much lower the MPG is for the AWD version is for the 2.5L, I'm guessing it's a couple of MPG lower both city and hwy?
I’m 6’0” and the lumbar support on regular highlanders hits my back too low for me and is uncomfortable. The Honda lumbar hits me just right. Did Toyoya use seats similar to Highlander or more for a bigger sub like Sequoia? Do you know if the GH lumbar is higher than regular highlanders?
Is not mentioned on the video, but it seems like you will lose the second row bench if going for the Platinum, but what about the Limited? Is it available with the bench on the second row?
The bench seat is only available on the XLE model. The Limited and Platinum models get the captain's chairs. However in the US, the base XLE trim comes with the bench seat but also has available captain's chairs.
Thank you! Really appreciate you answering our questions. The news though is very sad. Don’t get why carmakers are doing this to 3 rows SUVs. We currently have an SEL Palisade because is the way to get decent equipment with a bench, but looking forward to a more premium 3 rows. Seems like the Honda Pilot is about to earn my business for the next family 3 row SUV
@@elyj.8612 You are welcome! That's where the Pilot shines offering a bench seat on all trims except for the Trail Sport which has captain's chairs. That's a big deal for a growing family. We drove the base XLE gas Grand Highlander model, our review is coming out today at 12pm PST/3pm EST and it comes really well equipped. But, I was missing the panoramic sunroof in this model but if I need the bench seat, it's the one I would go for.
Thank you so much, glad you are enjoying it. Our gas model Grand Highlander drops Wednesday, May 31 at 12pm PST/3pm EST. Make sure you check that one out too! :)
Did you guys reverse the City and Highway fuel economy numbers for the base XLE hybrid? Vehicles usually consume less fuel on the Highway than in the City don't they?
I learned something new! I would still like to confirm fuel economy numbers generally though - as within the video you show 6.5L/100km and 7.3 km/100km for what Zach calls the base hybrid, however in the expandable description (above the comments) you've written 9.0L/100km and 8.7 km/100 both for the 2.5L Hybrid. Another great review Zack and Andrea. I've been looking forward to this one. It appears to be an all-round great package with different power options and trims to suit different pockets. Add in Toyota's historically great reliability and this should be a huge winner for Toyota. This should definitely steel sales from the Koreans cousins, the new Pilot and new Mazda CX-90. It's more fuel efficient, comes standard with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto and has a roomy third row for adults and great overall cargo space. I think the Mazda CX-90 as nice as it may drive missed the mark as an overall package in what consumers want in a large three row family SUV.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. The gas model review we are putting out tomorrow is the base model which we rarely get to drive. Hope you like that review too.
Great review as always. I would love to get your opinion on the new trend by Toyota and Lexus to redefine a leather interior by adding suede inserts. I have a 2022 Lexus RX 450hl (with the useless 3rd row). It is has a leather interior. Not the softest leather, but decent. My son just bought a 2023 Lexus RX 350 luxury, and it has suede inserts on the sides of the seats and on the dashboard. I, for one, do not like it , as I believe leather should mean leather. I cannot imagine that, on the same seat, the leather and suede will age the same, take beating sun the same (I live in Florida and he lives in Texas), or react to getting wet the same. I feel the suede cheapens it and doesn't look as good. And, with Toyota and Lexus, there is no option on these cars to avoid the suede. Your opinion and impressions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
Thank you! Great review, a test drive I was so looking forward to, and I'm now very excited about. I am 100% trading my regular Highlander for the GRANDE! SuperSize me, please!!!! ps I truly do not understand why they don't give 2nd-row bench seats option in all trims... that is beyond me! Great review! I always enjoy watching your review videos. I currently have a 2015 QX60 with 120k miles on it and was deciding on my next vehicle. I anticipated the release of the Sequoia, as I have had 2 of them in the past and I was disappointed with the cargo configuration so much that I decided to mark that off my list. I contemplated a new QX60 and/or a Honda Pilot and then I got wind of this vehicle coming out. I decided to wait and I currently have my name on a waiting list at my local Toyota dealership in Louisiana. I just need to decide if I want the Limited or Platinum trim with the Hybrid Max powertrain. In your opinion, considering the MPG difference, cost, and drive, is the 2.5 liter hybrid a better option over the hybrid Max and in which trim?
I am also in Louisiana.I love Toyota vehicles.I have a 22 Rav 4 XLE AWD which I love .But this Grand Highlander looks awesome. But ,I would get the gasoline version. Not fond of hybrid or electric vehicles or SUV’s
@@amyhyde5988 you are missing out, Toyota hybrid is arguably the best and it’s really smooth. You also get that electric kick in from stop which can be deceptively fast. This is not to mention the great gas mileage and hybrids are actually as or even more reliable than only gas

We were told at the drive event in Hawaii that the bench seat was only going to be available on the XLE model. So this is news to us. I would check with the dealership about heated rear seats for the second row bench seat.
I am disappointed to limited edition in canada doesn't have a bench seat in the middle. It is basically a 6 big six seater given that third seat can comfortably seat only two adults. Not sure why Toyota Canada made that call
The Chevrolet Traverse is a tiny bit bigger, it gets 22.9 cubic of space behind the third row and the Grand Highlander 20.6 cubic feet, pretty close.. Cargo space behind the second row is the same and overall cargo for the Traverse is 98.2 cubic feet, the Grand Highlander 97.5 cubic feet. The Traverse has always been one of the biggest in this class but now the Grand Highlander comes pretty close and it has two hybrid options.

I may have missed it in the video, do you know when these are going to be released?
This summer!
Very nice if you have enough money to buy it! Go for it! 👍🏻👍🏻 overall it’s very good. Great video Andrea! ☕️☕️
Glad you enjoyed it! It's an excellent option for families who need the space. The fact that Toyota is offering 3 powertrains is good news.
@@andreaspencer9813 I agree that’s a good news.
Yes indeed
Been waiting for this video!
Awesome, hope you enjoy it!
great details you both provide, I did not here those from other reviewers. thanx
I wish the limited has 8 passenger option. Great Review!!😊
Yes, I was excited about Hybrid Max but when I saw bench seat is not an option I am going back to Pilot.
You’ve just answered your own question lol sounds like you are leaning towards the Mazda.
@@nickolastiguan Yeah, as I re-read what I wrote, I did just that. I'll make a small edit to make the answer less obvious.
@@jsfbay1 the Spencers probably prefer the Mazda as well.
If you count in availability and dealer markup, it might be a very easy decision.
Maybe I'll buy the regular hybrid that you're passing on....... 3500 lbs of towing is way more than I'm getting right now in my Rav4 hybrid.
How many 12v ports? Where are they located for car camping?
I'm really disappointed they don't make the platinum with the regular hybrid (not hybrid max).
Do ya'll know when the 2024 Audi Q5's are coming out? Wanting one now, but im scared the 2024 will be a pretty major update. Worried and excited
Despite the variety of SUVs/CUVs offered by Toyota, they’re definitely more diversified than the Big Three and are better situated to weather any economic downturn.
Please bring the Nightlife segment to your reviews !
Otherwise, keep up the good work :)
Aloha both from Hawaii via satellite lol looking forward to this review late night here in Birmingham UK 😎
So glad you are watching it this late! 🙏
@Andrea Spencer Me too most enjoyable! 🙏🏼

Would you recommend this over the Hyundai Palisade?

With three powertrain options and more space in the 3rd row as well as cargo capacity, this one is tough to beat.
@@andreaspencer9813 thank you!
palisade and telluride are bottom of the pack
Was eagerly waiting for you with this video. thanks for sharing. I desperately require a bench seat so have to settle for XLE.
@@bhajjismarty It offers so much space especially in the third row. It's a well organized interior with the focus being on families.
Nice review Andrea!! How powerful is the headlight during night driving?
Amazing review! A talented duo.
Well said my friend 👏 👍🏾
Toyota screwed up the new Sequoia and the bz4x is an obvious turkey.
When will Toyota Highlander 2024 review coming ?
Is this quieter and softer ride than previous highlander?
What packaging constraints Re only the 6 speed would fit in the Hybrid Max (HM)? HM uses the same engine as the base 2.4L turbo does, and it fits the 8-speed auto. I know there's more stuff under the hood of the HM - I wonder by how many inches did the 8-speeed not fit?
Turbo mean nothing!
Horsepower is important!!
I got v6 295 horsepower! Love it
With the arrival of this, they should make the regular Highlander a 2-row SUV with spacious cargo area.
Put the third row down 😅
@@gloria7819 - But with captain chair only in the Limited / Platinum trim, it becomes a 4 seater. Absolutely crappy
I'm with you - don't need a third row but I do need to accommodate 5 adults on occasion and need as much cargo space as I can get. Even when folded down, you can see they're eating a lot of space and, of course, they add extra cost to the vehicle as reflected in the price.
Some of us would prefer the extra cargo space and space below where the third row would be stored.
Andrea is looking amazing!
Very True.I would choose the Gasoline only version of the Grand Highlander if I were going to buy one in the United States
Did they rectify the front passenger seat? Is height adjustable available this time. Tnx!
Thanks.
Great review and commentary
Thank you very much!
It's tough to beat a minivan for space. The Sienna offers 5.2" of extra third row legroom compared to the Grand Highlander.
@Andrea Spencer Sienna it is. Now the real question is how much longer do I still have to wait on top of the 8 months that I've already waited lol..thank you so much!
Between Mazda cx-90 turbo s Signature and Grand Highlander Hybrid Max, which one is a better car? Hybrid Max is almost $10k more than cx-90 Signature.
Would you choose this over the Telluride?
Good to see Toyota filling a real gap in the consumer market. Is anyone else selling Luxury SUVs?
Agree with you guys, BENCH SEAT option
We keep saying that, wish they would offer it on every trim or at least more trims.
@@andreaspencer9813 hope they will do it in 2025 model
I would say this vehicle is a home run! Granted the prices of vehicles are just going higher and higher but that's what the bank of Toyota is for 😅. You can tell that this was designed specifically to compete against the bigger SUVs in this category but with more engine options as Zach said. The base hybrid model seems like the winner though. I wonder how long the wait will be to get one.
You guys are the best, I am trying to figure out how much lower the MPG is for the AWD version is for the 2.5L, I'm guessing it's a couple of MPG lower both city and hwy?
Hi, is 2nd row bench seat an option for the hybrid limited trim level in Canada?
Great video review !
Thank you very much!
How this compares to the MDX?
are they planning on bringing a PHEV version?
Is 2nd row Bench seat an option in limited and platinum also?
An extended RAV-4 ?
Its has more power and torque than the type S mdx ??

I'm so much more Andrea than Zack when it comes to tastes and driving. Lol. The driving experience and engagement is very important to me. 😊
Nice!
Now to add a sport appearance package!
Seen alot of people talking about the engine how it’s not a V6 so it’s not gon last that long ?
No rear entertainment system?
Did you guys reverse the City and Highway fuel economy numbers for the base XLE hybrid? Vehicles usually consume less fuel on the Highway than in the City don't they?
Hybrids have higher MPG in city driving due to the electric motors working during take off from a stop thus saving fuel.
Hybrids always perform better in the city than on the highway. It's the opposite for gas models.
I think you're referring to the same vehicle/engine but the the numbers differ. In the written description maybe you showed the Hybrid Max fuel economies twice?

Definitely will be watching
Thank you.
I'll check it out tonight with my evening cocktail.
Awesome, thank you!

Thank you! Great review, a test drive I was so looking forward to, and I'm now very excited about. I am 100% trading my regular Highlander for the GRANDE! SuperSize me, please!!!!

I truly do not understand why they don't give 2nd-row bench seats option in all trims... that is beyond me! I had to pick XLE vs Limited or Platinum on my current Highlander just to get the bench. Frustrating
Yes, I wish the bench seat was offered on all trims as well. We asked Toyota about this and they say it's all about weight and towing capacity. Higher trims have more features and since you carry less people they can keep the weight down. But, Honda seems to do it on the Pilot so I don't see why other manufacturers can't do the same.
Are you on the Big Island

I was expecting the hybrid Max to be more fuel efficient almost like a phev😢. Turns out it’s less fuel efficient
Where are they building these?

Toyota did such a good job!
do you know if the limited comes in a bench option with the 2.5 hybrid?
No unfortunately, the bench seat is only available on the base XLE trim.
I wish the hybrid Max would offer the 2nd row bench seat for 8 passengers.
If we opt for the Hybrid Limited / Max Limited with bench seats, do we lose the heated/ventilated feature in the 2nd row?

Is the trunk space behind the 3rd row bigger or smaller then the Chevy Traverse ?
The Chevrolet Traverse is a tiny bit bigger, it gets 22.9 cubic of space behind the third row and the Grand Highlander 20.6 cubic feet, pretty close.. Cargo space behind the second row is the same and overall cargo for the Traverse is 98.2 cubic feet, the Grand Highlander 97.5 cubic feet. The Traverse has always been one of the biggest in this class but now the Grand Highlander comes pretty close and it has two hybrid options.
