First, both these movies should stand alone. Personally, I prefer the 1977 version and this one has it's merits. But to say one is better than the other is too much.

I would love to watch this same movie (even with the same actors) done with a little sincerity and a few quality conversations (John, this was beneath you). Are the comments on here that the movie should have won awards sarcastic? I hope so, as this was one of the worst movies I have seen. I only watched to the end in the hopes it would come good but no. No one seemed to care about the people dying, not even their friends! Just soooo bad 🤦♀️
The 1977 version didn't score a lot higher (4.6/3.5 on IMDb) than this crappy "update", but it at least got some things right - For example, less-is-more. The textbook example is Jaws (1975) where the "villain" remains almost unseen until a couple jump-scare moments, and then not much more until the end. Spielberg did it because the roboshark kept malfunctioning, but it's equally effective if your fake monster is less than convincing even during the 2-second shots. Intersperse a few quick shocking reveals with wild reactions of real human fear and it can be very effective. But for F sake don't show an extremely obvious guy in a cheap shag rug suit just standing there saying "grrrr!" it falls flat.
Watching this movie kept me cool. Where I live right now it is 114 degrees So. Calif Desert. Now if that woman did not go off with the truck the young guy would have lived. Why do stupid people do stupid things in these horror movies? 😅
