I must admit. As much as I love Jay’s vlogs, I love them more as he films them on his own. It’s so much more personal. It’s just Jay and his thoughts. TY Jay! You’re the best!
I think it may just be part of his old massachusetts accent coming through. I notice a lot of people up around New York area pronouncing a sounds as an r sound.
@@dunlap4info I thought Mass folks skipped the 'R' sound sometimes. "I got wicked ham-ed at the keg paddy and had trouble paa-king my caa in the garaage". Translation: I got really drunk at the keg party and had trouble parking my car in the garage.
Jay Leno, I have to hand it to you. Here's why: When I was a young man, you seemed like a nice enough guy (and prettty funny to boot). But I am13 years years younger than you and you always seemed a little "old fogie" to me back in the 1980's and '90's (if you know what I mean). I think maybe your target audience was not me. But I must say, you have aged very gracefully and just become more relevant and cool. I love that you are open-minded and enjoy the qualities that make electric cars so much fun and so easy to drive (even if a bit different) and I'm super impressed to watch you experiment with the auto-pilot without being afraid of it. A lot of older guys and gals are afraid of it, as if they couldn't take over control at any time or something. You are a truely special American icon because you have stayed true to who you are. You continue to keep it real (in a fun and matter of fact way) and just keep getting better. Keep up the good work, I know you don't need the money, so you must really love doing what you do! My hat is off! Carry on!
Good example of a Boomer with Influence that is prepared to embrace Progress of Humanity and contributions of next generations. The Beatles and the Stones were great but Ed Sheeran and Beyonce are pretty darn good too!
I love that Jay is so open to electric cars. You can see that what he loves about cars are the cars themselves and is interested in all the different variants. A legend among car enthusiasts.
Its simple he just wants the fastest car thats why he was super into the roadster. Being electric and having zero maintenance is an extra bonus for him.
I'm so happy that Tesla has an articulate, well-known, platformed advocate in mainstream-American, non-controversial car-loving motorhead Jay Leno. His POV about Elon and electric cars is exactly the de-politicised, common-sense, admiring attitude that one would have expected all Americans to have about such a remarkable success story. When I listened to Jay making the case, I end up thinking to myself, "how does it even happen that anyone doesn't see it that way." Thank you Jay. I'm sure you are reaching many open minds, and may even be eroding the resistance of some who reject Tesla for irrational reasons.
I am thinking of getting a tesla but if everything electric i would join the military so I can remember gas and diesel was the best thing to happened i will drive my mom old 2nd ody until it broke.
Jay is dodging the problem, like everyone else who tries to defend Tesla. Detractors don't hate Tesla because of their cars or technology, they hate Tesla because of their abysmal QC, absolutely lousy business practices, "need to disrupt" attitude that makes interacting with them for any reason a PITA, Elon Musk's constant brash showgaming, and the double standard Wall Street treats the company with compared to the rest of the corporate world that allows them to get away with it all. This all comes from a Model S P85D first owner who had his car downgraded a year ago with no warning whatsoever. The software "update" isolated the front motor, disabled Supercharging (not just loss of free access, which I was still due another years' worth of, the Supercharger will simply refuse to charge the car) and halved my battery capacity - all for reasons Tesla still will not tell me besides "we shrink the usable battery size to preserve life as the car ages." I gave this company a chance, and they used it to milk my wallet. I'm keeping my S for now, as it does everything I need it to, but I'm through with buying Teslas until someone sues them for their depravity. If Ford operated at a loss for more than 2 straight quarters, never mind 9 straight years, Wall Street would freeze their lines of credit and send them into bankruptcy. If Mary Barra accused someone on Twitter of being a pedophile, never mind out of pure envy that he got the job done faster, she would've been sacked by her own board within hours. Ford is being sued for hundreds of millions of dollars over the PowerShift, 90% of the issues which arose because people don't know you can't crawl with a dry clutch DCT (it even says so in the owners' manual), despite the transmission causing no deaths or injuries, just safety risk. Meanwhile, over a dozen people have been killed in Autopilot crashes worldwide, and Tesla hasn't been successfully taken to court once. The world treats this company with a double standard because they're "hip," "cool," and "inventive." That's why people hate Tesla.
GintaPPE1000 it’s not a double standard. It’s a different standard. Tesla is not a car company. They are an R&D company that happens to make cars. In the same way Amazon is not a retailer. They are a tech company that just happens to sell retail goods. What investors correctly saw in Tesla after they went public is they are much more than just a car company. So they where willing to tolerate losses year over year because they know that soon those losses will become huge margins. It’s exactly what happened with Amazon. Just consider the SuperCharger network alone. Even if car companies start churning out Tesla competition tomorrow ever one of those cars will frequently use a SuperCharger. Now that said they aren’t perfect. They certainly have had QC struggles and Customer Service struggles. But frankly neither is any other car company. At the end of the day their are enough people willing to deal with those issues to drive a remarkable car. You just aren’t one of them.
Jay: Appreciates the newest autonomous safety features on the Tesla. Also Jay: Drives a steam powered car with a giant tank of pressurized boiling water and no seat belts.
You can appreciate old things and new things at the same time. I would to have a classic Model T Ford, or DMC Delorean. But I don't want those to be made TODAY. It's easy to appreciate the best of times. But building obsolete things is ridiculous.
I really enjoy these solo productions brought on by the need for social distancing due to Covid-19. Jay seems so much more relaxed & informal. He is able to share his thoughts & the information about the subject matter w/o having to have what is often a somewhat difficult conversation with a guest. The solo episodes are almost like he is talking directly to me. It makes the episode much more pleasant & appealing.
As the world tries to raise the bar on how crazy it can get, it is nice to see good people, respectful and respectable, looking for the best around them and inspiring the rest of us to do the same. Thank you, Jay, for being who you are, and remaining in the public's eye to balance out all of the other insanity that surrounds.
Jack J Good grief. Why can’t people see beyond politics? The arrogance of politics in this country knows no bounds. Both parties can take a long walk off a short pier. I respect the people working their butts off, trying to do good without wanting any of the notoriety, not the politicians that play mirror, mirror on the wall each day, or the ones that see them as Gods. My leaders are nurses, garbage collectors, lineman, engineers, foster parents, those that realize riches are not monetary, but in the connections among us.
Respect for you Mr Leno for embracing the change and being open for the new generation of technology. Your opinion influences so many car guys around the world and, by you being an advocate for Tesla, you open people’s eyes. If anybody else lists the same facts as you (Elon, me, top notch engineers, or your neighbors), people just can’t hear it. But when they hear it from YOU, they are receptive! And you know... you could be a hater too. The guy who could own any cars in the whole wide, world, why would you need a Tesla (you could easily be too cool for Tesla), that has crazy bad panel gaps, and faulty backseat alignments, etc. But instead you see the value and grasp what Tesla embodies, and you use your influence to spread that aspect of this amazing company. And that Mr Leno, that earns my respect!! Keep up the outstanding work!
I don't know where you got your Tesla or if you in fact own an older one, but ours has no panel gaps or miss aligned back seats. It's build quality is excellent, as good or better than any other mass produced vehicle.
Dear @@peterferrydriver I am beyond happy to hear that your Tesla is perfect and congratulations for owning one. (Which one if I may ask?) I am unfortunately not a Tesla owner right now, but hopefully within the next 2 years I will be one. Right now I am just standing on the side of the pool, and jealously (but proudly) watching Tesla owners having fun in the water. I closely follow several Tesla youtubers (Ben Sullins, Andy Slye, Ryan Shaw) who are objective about Tesla, beside being a huge fan. Both Ben and Ryan just recently bought their Model Ys, and they both have very similar quality issues. (misaligned backseat, uneven panel gaps and other little things). I think Teslas are fantastic cars. I have never been bothered about them until I rented one from Turo to surprise my dad. Ever since, no other vehicle exists in my mind. The whole auto industry feels outdated after driving a Tesla. By now I have driven the S, 3 and X, and I always think that whichever I drive at the moment is my favorite. BUT.. it is a fact, that quality control is not up to the price of the cars. I am a fanboy, but I have to admit. Haters always keep bringing this up not focusing the other 200 categories where Tesla blows everyone out of the water. What I meant to highlight in my post is that Mr Leno has all the resources to be a hater, and point out all the flaws. He owns the highest class vehicles in the world. He is such an influential car enthusiast, and I love that he can see the positives and focus on them instead of being one of the small minded individual who cannot accept something that is new. Thank you for your comment, I appreciate it!
@@Zeno860331 Son's car, a Tesla 3. The only issue was the steering wheel was not centered. 1 phone call and a tech came and aligned it. The rest is all good. After careful inspection, we found that the the panel gaps are excellent. No other issues have been noticed. Interesting fact though. A couple of weeks after the purchase was completed, a remote "update" removed some of the features that had been included in the base package by mistake, such as rear seat heating.
I grew up with American 50s & muscle, but like you Jay, enjoy all cars for what they are. So as a complete petrol head I must say I find these Teslas VERY impressive. I drove a Model 3 a while back and was stunned. I think for a daily drive type situation or even a road trip, these things are awesome. I am now definitely considering a Model S as my next family car. Still have the classics for Sundays though. :)

Jay is like one of those old people who know everyone, “oh yeah, _name_ he’s/she’s a good friend of mine. Wonderful person.” Edit: guys, what about this is racist, or threatening. This was just trying to compliment Jay Leno, he’s a really cool guy. I have nothing against anyone. Edit 2: guys, I never called him old, I’m just comparing him to one of those people (who in my experience are in their late 70’s which I consider old) know a lot of different people.
You, youngsters, are so hip, marching, and protesting for everyone, but an older person is your racial profile target now? If your lucky, you may get there, but maybe someone should have taught you to show respect, to anyone and everyone. In addition, you could not hold a candle to Jay Leno, either on the stage, running the tonight show for 20 years (at 20 million a year) or driving skills behind a car at over 200 mph. Absolutely not lol. People who love cars and loud pipes (like myself) would never choose an electric car over gas powered. I wouldnt care how much faster it is.....without the sound, its pointless. Not saying having a Tesla wouldnt be nice for when ur just out with the fam or whatever
I have a feeling if the sound is the big issue, Tesla and others will include audio of various ICE/exhaust combos for the entire RPM range piped through the interior. Select if you want V8, 12 and which model.
@Barry Goldwater get your facts straight Barry. No rare earth metals in EV's powered by Lithium batteries. However, your gas car's catalytic convertor does as it contains Cerium. (as does Nickel Metal Hydride batteries in the hybrid Prius) Sounds like you got high on some POTH fumes. To be clear, worldwide carbon neutrality is the paramount goal for our planetary survival, and the most impactful action is ditching all fossil fuels within the decade. As the grid gets cleaner, we CONCURRENTLY start building electrified infrastructure in every sector. You don’t wait for the grid to be 100% FF free, then go to EV’s especially when right now we can make a difference. Besides the improvement in air quality for inner cities as we have seen during covid, an efficient EV in NYS gets 306 mpg equivalent, more than 10x what a Subaru Forester gets. That is a substantial difference. See state by state from The Union of Concerned Scientists blog.ucsusa.org/dave-reichmuth/are-electric-vehicles-really-better-for-the-climate-yes-heres-why
@Barry Goldwater Ooooh wow Barry did you just google rare earth and Tesla? so impressed. You have a very superficial understanding of the topic at hand. Tesla does not use a permanent magnet motor, it uses a switched reluctance motor (which prior to Tesla's design, did not use any permanent magnets at all) and added a small amount of permanent magnet to overcome some inherent problems of this motor design - in the process they designed a whole new type of electric motor. The Model 3 uses a tiny fraction of permanent magnet material compared to a permanent magnet motor, and all the talking heads popping off about rare earth shortages on the internet are basing their calculations as if Model 3 were using a classic permanent magnet motor. It does not. Nothing to see here folks. And even with the Koch Brothers new boogie man being "rare earth metals', neodymium is more common in the Earth's crust than lead or tin. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abundance_of_elements_in_Earth%27s_crust

What you say DID apply once, especially when Tesla started, nearly 19 years ago. They only had an old plant from an other manufacturer to produce parts. And even until 2017 they were still too small to afford big expensive manufacturing machines for their processes. This has changed night to day though. They have even developed their own much sturdier and more luxurious materials, to surpass any other manufacturer and supplier. No it doesn’t. I’m permanently disabled because of a distracted driver. She only took her eyes off the road for “a few seconds.” And in that few seconds, she slammed into the back of my motorcycle while doing 60+ mph through a red light. Answering that cellphone was more important than paying attention to the road and other vehicles. So no, I don’t like the large screen that’s being used to replace the traditional dashboard controls and instrumentation. It requires drivers to take their eyes off the road for “a few seconds.” We shouldn’t be fumbling around with either books or computer screens while driving.

No politics, just a factual eval and prediction of a future that is really already here. People just haven't realized it. My son in law recently bought a Model Y and foolishly let me take it for a test drive. I liked it a lot. Just drove what I thought was normal. We hope you signed up to reserve a Cybertruck. As owner operator of 3 pickups for years and up to a Peterbilt, the sooner they all go electric, the better!
Hey Jay! 2 things! The 1st is, do not close the front trunk like you do on your gas cars, unless of course you wanna head over to the repair shop for an expensive repair when you damage the front closing mechanism! So the correct way to close the front trunk lid is to lower the lid & apply a steady downward pressure engaging the closing mechanism which activates the closing mechanism & allowing allowing it to secure & lock the front trunk lid in place! The other thing is the towbar that’s located in the Front trunk is for someone to tow the Tesla, not the Tesla towing another vehicle, so if you wanna tow say a trailer or something like that you have to get a special towing hitch & attach it to the rear of the car! Great looking car by the way, I love the color scheme here & as always, great job & thanks for posting this video & hats off to Tesla’s for its vision of a cleaner, brighter future! Cheers!👍🏾👍🏾

Given his status, I'd wager that he's been asked this before regarding other vehicles because he's actually been given cars before. After reciting the question in a rather sarcastic and dismissive tone, he follows it up by stating that he purchased one himself (not that it would be difficult for him given his affluence) and made sure to emphasize that he paid full price. This would imply that he didn't receive any discounts, which he most likely has been given before on other purchases. The way in which he said it seemed to come across that he was appealing to the every-man implying that he too has to pay full price for what he wants to purchase. Juxtapose this with the following story of how he had a direct line to the owner of a multi-million dollar company to place an order for a vehicle that he was willing to pay full price for anyway; a process that could have been done online as everyone else is able to do. The idea that it was virtuous for him to pay full price for a product seems to fade when he likely used his connection with Elon to jump in line for a car that most people had to be put on a waiting list for. Granted, I didn't miss the point where Jay stated that Elon gave him his number with the idea of contacting him for an order. But you must reach a certain state of hubris if you think you can just call someone six years after the fact, assume that the offer is still valid, and assume that the president of a multi-million dollar global company is even still in your time zone.

@@abstruk I don't know if what you say is true or not, or what part of the world you are living in, but there are plenty of far worse players in the world than Tesla. As for surveillance China, the USA has over 400,000 Government registered drones. Not bad for the Land of the Free. I don't hear of Chinese Police shooting dead unarmed black citizens but who knows, maybe they to that too. Again, Tesla have part of the their operation in China, and if they had the chance. Ford, GM, VW, Seat, BMW, Audi, jaguar Land Rover and everyone else would have their operation there as well. Oops they do already. And Dyson the vacuum cleaner manufacturer cynically moved all their manufacturing to the Far East but it does not seem to have put consumers off. Apple the same, Lenovo, Dell, big pharma. It is true that Tesla might be criticized for doing the same as everyone else, but not to single them out while ignoring the rest of the production world.
@@abstruk Don't forget, Tesla made all their patents publicly available. I don't think they're very concerned with other people stealing their technology, the company's mission statement (and more specifically Elon's mission statement) is to have the world transition to electric cars as soon as possible.

I used to loathe the Tesla. Now I want one; ever since my realtor picked me up in hers from the train station. So many wanted Elon to fall hard and instead he's revolutionized the once impenetrable automotive industry. They're all trying to catch up to Tesla.
Ram s I didn’t want him to fail. I always respected him like I do any visionary - I just didn’t like electric cars, even though I knew they were the future. Needless to say, they’ve grown on me. There are plenty that hate him and were counting on him to flop. Just watch a little CNBC for example.
I'm close to Jay's age and I love old cars, especially Pontiacs. My wife didn't complain when I bought my '69 Firebird 400/4sp., so when she said she wanted a Tesla Model Y, I said, "OK". We've had it for two weeks now and so far, we both love it. My Firebird is no longer the fastest nor the quickest in this household and I'm ok with that. My daily driver is a pickup truck and there is one out there that I'd love to see Jay test; the Rivian R1T. In the future, when my current truck gets tired and if finances allow, I may just get one of those (since I am more traditional, I like the body style of the Rivian truck better than the Tesla Truck). Keep these videos coming Jay!!
Funny thing is, they're all car guys. Dave was from Indianapolis and had the Indy team. Seinfeld of course does his own car show and has a humongous collection.
What I really like about Jay Leno’s garage videos is that he is a true Car-guy, he really knows his stuff, so he can speak from a position of knowledge, enthusiasm, and experience. Top bloke Jay Leno👍👍👏🏽👏🏽
You know what's really missing from Jay's videos? He doesn't spend 20 minutes talking about the door handle or the seat belt or what side of the trunk they put the logo on. So many engines and drivetrains and ay ay ay... I'm going back to Doug DeMuro! Quack!
I am very happy that this tech has come along. I still remember when my dad was about 80 and we had to take his keys. He really was a hazard on the road. Now you will be able to get in the car and say take me to my doctor, or the market or wherever. I won't need to depend on my kids or neighbors to run me around.
Thank you for showing other car enthusiasts that it's ok to embrace electric cars and acknowledge this is the future of the industry. They are amazing vehicles to drive!
I must admit. As much as I love Jay’s vlogs, I love them more as he films them on his own. It’s so much more personal. It’s just Jay and his thoughts. TY Jay! You’re the best!

Jay Leno, I have to hand it to you. Here's why:
When I was a young man, you seemed like a nice enough guy (and prettty funny to boot).

When I listened to Jay making the case, I end up thinking to myself, "how does it even happen that anyone doesn't see it that way."
Thank you Jay. I'm sure you are reaching many open minds, and may even be eroding the resistance of some who reject Tesla for irrational reasons.
Well stated.
Jay Leno is much more articulate than Elon Musk.

It's ONLY about getting from point A to B.
very touching when you spoke about Xmas and the book. A big romantic you are Jay, and this feels through all you do for us here, passion and sensitivity is the key
Jay just sold 200,000 Tesla Model Ys.

Jay's stories are like a nice car. There are many moving parts and when they all come together it is a thing of beauty. I'm pretty sure Tesla is here to stay, and that's a good thing.

You should’ve mentioned that the auto makers that build gas-burning cars get subsidies. The oil companies get subsidies. Why shouldn’t a car manufacturer that builds a vehicle that is BETTER for us and the planet get a subsidy??!!
Exactly! If people want $7.50 / gallon fuel, lets start killing that oil subsidy package petrol enjoys.
TESLA model 3 is Outselling gas, Hybrid, and Other Electric cars with no Federal Subsidy.
It’s about people’s job, especially low skilled people’s job, not the environment.
Well technically they do - since there's a tax rebate of over 10% of the car price for the final buyer
MrTresto that again is not about environmental saving, but energy independence since US is still an energy net import country.
I could ride cross country with Jay just listening to his stories.

@Barry Goldwater Yup
See state by state from The Union of Concerned Scientists
blog.ucsusa.org/dave-reichmuth/are-electric-vehicles-really-better-for-the-climate-yes-heres-why
@Barry Goldwater Because oil and gas have not caused more damage to the world environment than a cobalt mine.
@Barry Goldwater What rare earth? There is no rare earth in Tesla's battery.

@@VanquishedAgain false. Any Tesla Model (S, X, 3, Y) on the market since 2017 is made in higher exterior AND INTERIOR quality than any BMW, Mercedes or Audi of higher prices even. Sit inside, look at it, touch the materials. I can list you down the materials used and precision stats of the last measurements and tests if you like. It surpassed every other car manufacturer. For example the high tech leathers, metals, silicons and interior timbers. Test drive one (free at any showroom, and no sales people that bother you) and you will believe me.

@Mi View you type that as you're on an electronic screen, no?
@Mi View you can't even spell sight correctly.
Jay, you are such a down to earth guy. Common sense evaluation of electric cars in general and Tesla in particular. No politics, just a factual eval and prediction of a future that is really already here. People just haven't realized it. My son in law recently bought a Model Y and foolishly let me take it for a test drive. I liked it a lot. Just drove what I thought was normal. When we got back to his house he told everyone how I had driven it like I stole it and scared him. I was hardly pushing it. But it is easy to drive fast and fun too.

I think that "tow hook" is designed to screw into the front of the car to pull the vehicle from the front in case there's a problem with it ... it's not for towing things behind it.
I'd chalk that up to Jay goin' 'stream of consciousness'.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

That is correct, I ordered a Tow package and it is coming Thursday. The front hook is if they need to pull the car into a tow truck.

Cheers!👍🏾👍🏾

@@deanzOOO 26:50 I was thinking something similar at first, but this was my thought process after rewatching it: The manner in which he portrays "people" asking him that question may indicate he has some contempt for either that type of person, and/or that particular question.
@@Gunnberg85 dude all he was getting at was that he wasn't given the thing and paid full price. Your armchair expertise and assumptions don't really mean anything.

@@abstruk Tesla has a manufacturing presence in China but is the ONLY auto maker that does not have to "partner" with a local Company. Tesla is building plants in Germany and Texas. It is not bugging out of America or selling out to China, like many other companies have. It is true that China does not enforce copyright (as does much of the Far East) and delving into China has risks. I was in the auto Industry for years and the first thing all the auto manufacturers do is buy a new car from a competitor, tear it apart, and see what they can copy. I cannot comment on the reckless shambles that is Boeing but they have many many more problems than China. To suggest buying a car is causing nations to lose their freedom is perverse. VW use cheap labour in the Eastern Block (Skoda) and Spain (Seat). Mercedes uses cheap labour in Mexico - as does Ford.
@@ouethojlkjn Tesla's motives, or Musk's disdain of factory operations is fairly well understood and acceptable, given what's at stake. But if one does not confront and reject China, then the future is not as chromed as Tesla's ethos implies. Of course, most Americans accept this and don't give a D about this future. Sad really. BTW.-- if you doubt what is the modern state of China....go visit there and your sense of lost freedom is enough to scare the S out of your desire to change the world by buying a.Tesla or even visit a Walmart or Costco.
