Wow, this takes me back to the day my daughter & I took a test drive in the debut Tesla roadster from their sales office in Menlo Park and up Woodside Road! She called dibs on driving it first; she pulled out of the parking space, aimed it for the driveway at El Camino Blvd, and floored it! Fifty mph in the parking lot before the driveway! I was scared & exhilarated! Their recommended drive was in the mountains, so there was a CHP parked along the route just waiting. I just knew the next curve would conceal him, so I told my speedy daughter to slow down just in time. I then took over and had fun on the mountain! That first Tesla was a thrill to drive. The regen braking surprised me because I hardly needed the brake pedal, even in heavy Silicon Valley traffic. The acceleration also surprised this old hot rod Boomer! What a great start to a now legendary company!

I'm not even some green movement tree hugger, but I was impressed with how electric vehicles have came along a few years back, when I worked for a distribution center that had a full fleet of 8000lb lift trucks all electric, plenty powerful, would run most of the shift on one battery, and you weren't trapped in a warehouse breathing carbon monoxide all day (like I had to back in the mid 90's) had a great battery station set up where they could change em out quickly, great operation
That's the use case where BEV do best. A known route or shift near a charging station. That massive torque & fine detailed control is soo useful and probably extra safety. The best thing about BEV is not the emissions stuff, it's the massive capability.
From 2008 to 2020, Tesla cars alone have improved so much! 2008 talk about 100,000 miles life in a pack, now 1,000,000 miles. 2008 220 range now talking about 400-500 mile range. 2008 3-4hr charge, now 30 minutes or less to charge. Hey everybody Remember When Top Gear got busted for lying about the Tesla breaking down when someone found a script they were ordered to read from who paid those guys to lie about that
I was a fan of the show but i never liked Jeremy's derision of certain brands and technology. He was too to opinionated on somethings. 1. He hatred of anything diesel. 2. His ambivalence to all things Porsche 3. His hatred of 100% electric cars. He pulled that same crap with the Nissan LEAF - purposely running out of power in the middle of a town square while on a "road trip." Made a point to say, "with included charging back, we should be ready to go in 24 hours." It was all a set-up to make electric cars look wholly inferior to "petrol" cars. Nissan never claimed, and still don't claim, it is a traveling car. It's a commuter and errand car. But when Jeremy liked something, he couldn't contain his excitement and it made for great television. It's a great example how bias journalism is done from the vantage and opinion of the journalist. If Jeremy was single handedly trying to squash the electric car, he failed. At least Jay recognizes the era of combustion engine passenger cars is coming to an end. He embraces the technology.
Tesla fans will try to lynch TG for that, and I agree with them. I think they were staging it that the car run out of battery, not breaking down. There’s no conspiracy, TG was trying to be entertaining and didn’t like electric cars back then. Tesla found out because they actually tracked the car.
Jay meant to say this is Elon Musk before he CREATED the electric car market. The other companies would have kept their vehicles at the science fair without the threat of TESLA.
@t c Just like all those wasteful gas cars that have really powerful engines that aren't needed that burn much more gas than is needed and have 4-6 empty seats most of the time to go only 50 miles a day. Oversized and overpowered cars aren't limited to just EVs. But if society is going to have oversized and overpowered cars then an EV is a much cleaner choice. You could make the same argument that all gas cars shouldn't have more than 100 hp because it's a waste of resources. The real question would be what percent of the cars in the world not only just travel on average 50 miles a day but NEVER travel more than 50 miles. Because once you have a car that can travel only 50-80 miles then it isn't very practical to travel 300-400 miles when needed. What do those people do then if they want to travel longer? They have two choices. They can stop and charge 5 times every 60 miles anytime they want to go on a 300 mile trip. Or they can rent another car that can go 300-400 miles. But now you have multiple cars in the equation and you will still need to make plenty of 300-400 mile cars to supplement the 50-80 mile cars. Sure there will be a very tiny percent of cars worldwide that will stay only in urban centers and never venture beyond 100 miles but that won't be a majority of cars. It is a much more simple system to build 300 mile range EVs for most and have niche EV products that are urban city EVs. Another advantage of longer range EVs is that on a daily basis they use a much smaller percent of their state of charger resulting in less wear of each cell in the pack leading to much better pack longevity. The smaller the range target you aim for in building a pack the more buffer you need to add at the top and bottom of the pack in order to have an acceptable life on the pack. So a 50-80 mile EV needs to have an extra 20-30% in reserve locked out from the user since each cell will be cycled almost fully every day to drive 50 miles. 1 cell in a 80 kWh pack is the same as the next 1 cell in a 20 kWh pack. Driving 50 miles a day in the 80 kWh EV each cell will only be cycled 15% a day while in the 20 kWh EV each cell will be cycled 63% a day. If each cell is rated for 1500 cycles that means 120,000 miles for the 20 kWh EV (20 kWh usable but 24 kWh with buffer) while the 80 kWh pack would have a life of 500,000 miles. Most cars won't last 500,000 miles but 120,000 isn't enough. It's better to have a theoretical 500,000 miles of life for in the real world outcomes can be higher or lower. And if the car does indeed end its life before 500,000 miles then the cells in this pack will still have utility to be reused as stationary storage until they are eventually recycled.
@@flipadavis I think there is an argument to be said that Tesla made electric cars, Not Nerdy, and distance. That was the idea. To make an electric car with as little effort as possible ... but then it turned out that they basically had to redo almost every part including reengineering the ac for example because like on most cars, the ac in the Elise had a belt-driven ac. The powertrain wasn’t that much of an effort since they mostly focused most of their engineering efforts on that - naturally - Elon’s bachelor thesis in physics for example was basically about energy storage/ batteries for amongst of course other uses, electric cars. They actually put that powertrain in a smart fourtwo for a mercedes demo. The mercedes guys were looking for who to invest in in silicon valley concerning “the car of the future” and Tesla within like 3 months orso got a smart from europe to america, threw out basically everything and put a pre-production roadster powertrain in it - quickest smart there’s ever been; did 0-60 in 3 to 3.5 seconds lmfao - The mercedes guys were in their fifth meeting that day and heard basically the same statistics and were just trying to skip Elon’s demo ahead when they asked when that “smart-concept” would be finished - Elon replied: oh it’s in the parking lot - wanna take a ride ? - >> this is more of a vague anecdote I’ve heard someone talking about: some engineers ran that smart out of battery on their way to an in-n-out burger and had to push it all the way back cause there were no chargers anywhere back then haha

Anyway, the other automakers are STILL trying to match the features of the 2012 Model S. A few have come close, 7 years later...
What's the technology? Really nothing ground breaking. The other automakers responded with the same thing the only difference is the ipad and battery housing.
Andrew Roy its actually really accurate here in germany. All the media keeps polarizing people against tesla. They really try to push the german manufacturers and only report on negative stuff related to tesla
I'd say the Kona electric is the closest any other automaker has come to their quality and range, but they are still not there. None of the competitor vehicles would even exist if not for Tesla though, let's be real.
@@YEET-yh6qc actually there's quite a big difference. The Tesla platform from the s on integrates batteries into the chassis. It uses electromotors positioned ideally on the axles. And they've got excellent regenerative braking. Traditional manufacturers kept using platforms designed for ices, converted to electric use with batteries bolted on top of the chassis or layered in what would otherwise be the engine bay and trunk floor, and so on. Study the platform and you'll see that traditional car makers are only now coming out with useable platforms similar to Tesla. But Tesla has been doing this for a decade now and are way ahead. On top of that they design their own chips for their self driving systems and no competition comes close to what Tesla's can do on this front. Reality is that Tesla is way ahead in electrical technology over all competition, and the competition is playing catch up. But Tesla invests everything in electric, better batteries, better range, better performance, whole traditional manufacturers are still also investing in ice engines and models. On top of that, their factories and production lines are almost all geared for ice production, and it will cost billions to convert, while every Tesla factory is built for electric production from the start. Many economists are now coming round and saying it's actually already too late for many traditional auto makers. They just reacted too late, and will never catch up to Tesla. Their market share will keep shrinking, profits falling, investment in r&d falling, increasing the headstart Tesla has tech wise, again decreasing market share, and so on. Traditional auto makers have entered a vicious circle, and it's probably too late for most of them to respond and get out of it. Tesla is now outselling all competition in almost every large car market... Only a few huge corporations and Tesla will survive. Most predict VW, Toyota and Tesla will become the big 3, and all the rest will die or will be taken over... I'm not a fanboy. Really I couldn't care less. But reality is reality and economics usually don't lie. Its no accident Tesla is now valued over 150bn, far more than all the traditional Detroit big three combined. Tesla has everything going for it, while traditional manufacturers are in huge debt, and are playing catch-up in every way that's relevant...

I have noticed that English people are incredibly precise with their words. Americans tend to kind of dance around the engineering details with fuzzy descriptions that don't quite make sense. Jay will describe his 1 of 1 ancient electric car, and just say "it has deep cycle batteries."

I wish I bought tesla stock when this video was filmed!
My chart only goes back to 2010, but even then, that would give you about $14. It's now trading at $725. Watchout, a SERIOUS crash is coming, bringing the DJIA down to 2500-6000 over some years. One more high in equities could mean all-over-red-rover. Better be ready. Those with cash will be able to buy anything they want at any price they want.

Thanks for airing this! So awesome to see it. Elon acts the same and he knows his stuff. Kudos to Jay for knowing about the car too.

Top Gear was absolute crap and shouldve stopped years before it did
I was a fan of the show but i never liked Jeremy's derision of certain brands and technology.

It's a good argument but it's impractical to live with minimalistic needs. why don't we all get electric scooters with heavy winter Jackets? It's just not how people live. We also need to think about our electric grid. We need some serious infrastructure for everyone to go on electric cars.

@@georgebamber6871 I didn't I just thought it was funny that I said that out loud and he's like yup.

Thanks, Good stuff. It is nice to see the unaired content. For car guys anything technical about the mechanics of automotive operation does not get old. In this segment, Tesla owner Elan explains the genius idea of making the individual battery cells so small neither one’s failing has a adverse effect on the other.
2008: "It'll never work. People will never buy an electric sports car."
2009: "Tesla will be bankrupt within a year."
2010: "Anytime now, Tesla will fail."
2011: "That Model S we keep hearing about will never materialize."
2012: "Nice car, but they lose money on every sale. They'll be bankrupt within a year." [note: This car ended up Car & Driver's Car of the Year]
2013: "Still not making a profit. They are dead in the water."
2014: "This supposed SUV will not save the company."
2015: "Yeah, yeah, Tesla is still going to fail. Model X is too expensive."
2016: "This new moderately priced Tesla will never come out at that price."
2017: "Oh, so you got over 200000 pre-orders in the first 2 days. Those aren't real numbers."
Anyway, the other automakers are STILL trying to match the features of the 2012 Model S. A few have come close, 7 years later...
Calm down fanboy. People liked them back then. Your hipster thinking is flawed
