The video uses the old rulebook. In the new FIBA rules, if you receive the ball with 1 foot on ground, it'll be the gather step (0). Or if you're in the air when you receive the ball and land on 1 foot, that will be the gather step. The player then can take step 1 with another foot, and release the ball for dribble before "foot 1" comes off the ground. Or take 2nd step to pass / shoot. For the pass or shot, it is OK for the pivot foot to leave the ground, but it can not touch ground again.

To the untrained eye, travelling is difficult to flag. But for a B-ball player, it is just the need to dribble the ball while you are walking or running.
So if you hold the ball, and while lunging from L to R, you take a quick 3 hopper before doing the dribble drive---you will be whistled for travelling and you lose the team's possession to the ball to the other. :( :(

    00:08
travel travelling happens when you move
    00:11
with the ball without dribbling it is a
    00:15
violation which is penalized with a turn
    00:17
over to the other team to make sure you
    00:19
don't travel be careful in these three
    00:21
situations when you receive the ball
    00:23
while moving when you receive the ball
    00:25
while stationary and when you start
    00:27
    dribbling first situation when you
    00:30
receive the ball while moving when you
    00:32
receive the ball if you take more than
    00:34
two steps without dribbling you will be
    00:36
called out for travelling to avoid this
    00:38
remember to take no more than two steps
    00:40
before releasing the ball for a shot or
    00:42
pass if you already have one foot on the
    00:48
floor when receiving the ball you won't
    00:50
get one extra step second situation when
    00:54
you receive the ball while stationary to
    00:57
orientate yourself and protect the ball
    00:58
you can turn on one foot on the
    01:00
condition that this foot doesn't move
    01:01
this is called the pivot foot once you
    01:06
catch the ball if you take your pivot
    01:08
foot off the floor or slide it the
    01:11
referee will call it travel you may lift
    01:13
your pivot foot to shoot or pass but you
    01:15
must release the ball before your foot
    01:17
touches the ground again for information
    01:20
on how to choose your pivot foot check
    01:22
our video starts and stops third
    01:26
situation starting a dribble when you
    01:29
start dribbling if you lift your pivot
    01:30
foot before you dribble a travel will be
    01:33
called to avoid this make sure you
    01:36
release the ball before moving your
    01:37
pivot foot the traveling rule can be
    01:40
tricky to get used to initially but it
    01:41
will quickly become natural and you
    01:43
won't even have to think about it over

I've seen pros take 3 and 4 steps before releasing the ball to the basket all the time and they aren't called on it.

  • @Hoopsfan-ml7jx

This is wrong: "Once you catch the ball, if you take your pivot foot off the floor or slide it, the referee will call a travel." Sliding it yes, but you can take your pivot foot off the floor -- it's only a travel once it *touches the floor again*. You mention in next sentence that you can lift it to shoot or pass, but that first sentence by itself is incorrect.

    • @Hoopsfan-ml7jx
      @Hoopsfan-ml7jx 9 месяцев назад

Same with at 1:30: Yes if you lift your pivot before dribbling a travel will be called, but it's only once the ball hits the floor that you'll be whistled. What the person does here -- lifting their pivot foot -- is not in itself a travel, because at that moment the video freezes and whistle sounds they could still shoot or pass.

Even if u never dribble ?? If I have left pivot foot. Jab a couple times with the right ofc. Put my right foot down, dribble before my left foot go back down is a travel ?? That call is the worst call in basketball history. It’ll be impossible to get pass anyone.

I have a question when I have my left foot planted forward on my final drive I am allowed 2 steps right well if I drive straight and do my final dribble after my let foot is planted forward and and I turn my right key even more back at an angels then my left foot around in a fadeaway motion is that a travel I don’t see the difference between it and a step back now I have been called out for a travel for switching my pivot foot but I wasn’t using pivot foot I wasn’t stationary or restricted after my last dribble I have 2 steps why is moving and spinning backward different from stepping back or stepping forward for a dunk I still only take 2 steps I feel I should be entitled to do this fadeaway move

  • @BlendedCloud

Wrong wrong wrong… foot on ground or foot in the air don’t count as a step. Also applies to when you pick up the dribble (1 step=a foot coming off the floor).

  • @Tifford1
    @Tifford1 3 года назад

Question: I am stationery. I receive the ball. I then use my left foot as the pivot foot & move my right foot around. THEN I picked my pivot foot (left foot) up in the air but kept it in the air.
I say this is not traveling.
The Jr High ref called me for traveling.
    Who is right?

So if you catch the ball in the air and land on one foot and then proceed to take two more steps, is that a travel violation? Also, same situation, if you catch the ball in the air, land on one foot and then take a step with one and plant the other foot, is that a travel?

  • @trinigrl09

wikipedia says that taking more than 2 steps without dribbling is not considered a travel…..A travel is defined as illegal movement of the player's established pivot foot….

in the last scenario wouldn't the travel only be called once your pivot foot lands? if you were to lift your pivot foot and then release the ball before you land to either pass or make a shot, i believe that would be a legal play. not sure though.

00:47 this is incorrect. When receiving the ball, the foot on the floor is called your gather step or 0 step. You can take two steps after that on. In the video you show only being allowed to take one more step

Great video I have a question and it will be really good if you could answer. If a player is dribbling and does a 1-2 stop then by definition the 1st leg that touches the ground is the pivot (anchor), if the player then steps on the other leg and releases the ball (either to shot or to pass) before the pivot leg lands on the floor again, is it travelling or not? I was taught that it is because you are lifting your pivot leg and using your other leg to do something. Of course if you lift both your legs is not a problem, I am only asking about this "extra step". It is a nice video thx

    • @tommygraham3514

you can always lift your pivot foot but if it contacts the floor after picking up your pivot then it is a violation, in other words the pivot can stay in the air and your good

As with all basketball rules violations, the violation occurs when the foot makes contact with the floor. So that's fine.
