  • In this video essay I take a deeper look at the villains of Avatar: The Legend of Korra and their ideologies and philosophies. Through examining who they are as enemies and how they drive the story forward, there are many lessons we as the viewer can learn from them. This video is an attempt at dissecting and expanding upon those teachings in the context of the world around us.

I would add that kuvira wanted to unite ALL of of the earth kingdom lands, including the United republic, Which was considered to be unjustly stolen by the avatar and fire lord to create a settler colonial state. Both the earth queen and the kuvira held this belief.

True but he did that against the wishes of his subjects it doesn't change the fact that in order for the United Republic to exist the Fire Nation had to violently seize a portion of EK land and displace the indigenous culture in order for the United Republic to exist.
Zuko in the Promise even dismisses the discrimination Earth people face in the colonies.

In my opinion Amon and Zaheer are best villains of the Legend of Korra. Both of them possess powerful charisma and ideology. Unlike Unalaq and Vaatu, these two are more of an antagonist than villain. Amon and Zaheer believes in equality and anarchy respectively. Amon believes existence of bending has caused misfortunes for the world, while Zaheer believes government and rulers prevented people from reaching freedom. They both shows redeeming sides as Amon showed concern for his followers and despite been in a conflict, he still cared deeply for his brother Torrak. Zaheer also cared for his comrades and was deeply upset when his girlfriend P'li was killed. Zaheer also helped Korra to return her connection with spirits. Kuvira was also charismatic but she confused her ambition as patriotism. Also, she showed little to no care for her subordinates as she ruled everybody with an iron fist. She was even willing to sacrifice her fiance, Baatar Jr., even though he abandoned his family for her. Unalaq's motivation for his goal was driven primarily because of his jealousy towards his brother. He framed his brother and drove him out out North Pole and when he heard his brother's daughter was an Avatar, his jealousy reached his climax to the point he would free Vaatu to become Dark Avatar.

I think the best part of LoK and it’s villains, is that nothing is one sided or black and white. Instead of giving us villains and telling us they’re bad or not, the show challenges the morals and beliefs of not only the protagonists, but the audience as well. It makes us question our own views and think about those controversial topics. While Korra being a protagonist and her being against the ideologies of the villains tells us they’re in the wrong, we can’t help but sympathize with the villains to an extent. Because in some aspects, they are right. Benders shouldn’t have an unfair advantage over nonbenders, but you can’t just alienate one side or the other and take away their rights. Zaheer makes a very valid point about corrupt governments with unjust power and control over citizens. But as Korra said, no world leaders lead to riots and uprisings just as in Ba Sing Se. The show presents both sides of the issues and makes us understand each.

I really appreciate this video. There is no unnecessary hate on Legend of Korra, it’s educational on each ideologies presented by the villains, and you connected the story with the real world. I was really fascinated by the villain’s perspectives, especially Amon and Zaheer. The two had very good points about the flaws in society. I was able to understand them but not so much on Unalaq and Kuvira. I knew Unalaq’s ideology is connected to religion but I didn’t see how his ideas connected to the real world. But you answered the question in an easy matter for me to understand: the spirit world was representing our environment. How we’re in disharmony with our own planet and polluting the world. It makes so much sense- Unalaq originally wanted to restore balance between the two worlds, but alas his faith was brought into an extremity. I also didn’t get Kuvira at first. She just seemed like a power-hungry lady to me, not someone with a morally gray area. After watching your video, I realized even though that was partly true she still represented a problem we’re facing today: social media and the power they hold. It’s certainly true that she helped bring balance into the Earth Kingdom after it was fallen to chaos. However, she had a twisted way of “reuniting” the Earth Kingdom. When people refused to swear their loyalty to Kuvira, she threatened them- not giving them food, water, the bare necessities to survive. She had good intentions of wanting to help people but she just took it too far. This complicated and divided people because people didn’t know what Kuvira did to restore balance and blindly followed her. Kuvira had good intentions but she took it too far and even she knew that. But that’s not really the point, my point was Kuvira represented people with power today and how we blindly worship them when we don’t even know what those celebrities/people with power do in the background.
Anyway, this comment turned way longer than it was supposed to. Just wanted to say thank you for helping me understand the villain’s ideologies and how it connected to the real world. I love both ATLA and LoK equally, they’re both wonderful and fascinating in their own ways. However, LoK’s story plot is way more interesting and is also parallel to society’s problems today. It’s amazing.

The video sums it up with looking at the conflict between nature and man as discrimination 8:40 . I know he was probably looking at Amon with seeing all benders as a potential threat, but using man vs nature was cool. Because instead of blaming one for all the negative things that pop up, I think us taking what we need from nature to sustain both humanity and the environment the balance that's always been there, it's just become tougher sense the industrial revolution.

People didn‘t know what Kuvira was doing. I found that very unrealistic. What about that enourmos army could be delusional? Why did they all behave like you couldn‘t be sure if you just needed to talk to her? With the Equalists and the Red Lotus it was set right from the start that they were evil with far less clues.
I don‘t see „Social media“ as a problem in Korra season 4. It‘s fascism. Today fascists use social media, but in Korra they don‘t.

Korra had AMAZING villains, and honestly, what made them so great were their complexities and the fact that what they fought for were something we all can understand. Amon wanted Equality for Everyone, Unalaq wanted the spirits and humans to live peacefully together to create Balance, The Red Lotus wanted to overthrow corrupt leaders and the ideology of the Avatar uniting all when they believed they can unite themselves without the Avatar, and Kuvira wanted to Unite her people after the power vacuum left by Zaheer and the Red Lotus. Equality, Balance, Liberty and Unity. Though all their methods went through dictatorships, totalitarian rules, and anarchy, it’s hard to think that at the end of the day, they each got what they wanted in a way in the end.
Amon got the council in season one abolished to have a non-bender president because benders abused their gifts which created that equality in a way, Unalaq got the spirits to live with humans in the end after Korra chose to keep the Portals opened, Zaheer killed the Earth Queen and gave the people their freedom from a dictator, and Kuvira after her defeat eventually united the Earth Kingdom again with Wu at the helm.

Or it's to point out that a lot of radicals that call for equality such as Marxist thinkers tend to be complete hypocrites that throw away the people's will for power. Like when Lenin, who called for equality, overthrew Russia's democratic assembly and then ignored and prosecuted voters against his agenda when the vote was not to his liking. History is filled with such figures.

I think you need to see it from a more broad view.
He is defenately a Villan who comes from a psychologically relatable point.
What many peoole fail including those mentioming him in Videos is who Noatakk was by nature.
As Tarlock tells us he used to be a very good natured kid that always helped and wanted fairness.
It was their criminal ex Mafia boss violent and forced training that slowly pushed booth down a dark path.
Yakone their father was obsessed with Vengence and his sons were but tools to archieve it. Since he could no longer bend but they could.
We see him grow colder and colder given as more talented Yakone put the main preassure on him.
Keeping in mind their father was a mob boss they at first feared him enough not to tell their mother or dare lay hands on him.
And through this "Having to do this to survive" mindset the i want fairness for everyone escalated.
As a 14 year old was forced to twist and tourture local wildlife to bloodbend. Forced to do the same to his brother.
But at some point he snapped. Shocked his father by bending him and ran off. Traumatized and without guidemce he grew into this twisted sense of equality through force.
Saw out in the world how essencially some are born with guns others can never hooe to get any to defend themselves.
Its not about the rich or powerful lile Zaheer. His goal was still fairness for the opressed. It was the methods born from their fathers mental and physical abuse that caused him to become a Villan.
We see him focus on Criminals first humiliating them.on stage how they humiliated and opressed others before. Causing terror and despair to them losing their bending how they left others without money and hope.
This extended to all benders because how can non benders ever stand up to a bender if they decide to use this gift to get their way?
So in his mind given what he could to was make all the world non benders so all have the same chances. And power isnt decided by a random chance at birth.
Of course the aftermath of such a success would be like our world. Where weapons would replace bending. But at the very least all would have the same options.
So Amon isnt about Anaechy, like Zaheer, not about opression like Kurvira. He is a fallen Hero of a child that ended a Villan by having his core belive twisted to extremes. Losing sight that just taking all bending away does not erase bad people.
And like in our world organized and unorhanized crime just finds new ways.

Zaheer and the red lotus have many people that agree with them myself included to a degree. The white Lotus had a job to fight against evil by staying in the shadows. But after the 100 year war was over they reveal themselves and basically became the avatar private security.
The red lotus believe that people should have freedom and life will find a way. President raiko being a idiot, he could've helped stop korras uncle by sending help but didn't,nearly costing the planet. And the earth queen being a dictator by taxing the working and middle-class to the point of starvation. Forcing the the new airbenders into the military. Zaheer didn't realize actions have consequences.

You cant really compare the original white lotus a group of extremely wise elder grand masters that understood the world as a whole and stood above nations and what not with that shit the LOK writers did with it.
The whole find new Avatars conceot to train them.would at least make sense. Its when they involved them in politics where they pissed on the founders roots.
Also people should realize that Anarchy only sounds nice on paper. Humans arent able to just do what they want and succeed.
By removing figureheads new ones rise up. By removing goverment entierly chaos ensues snd criminals run rampant.
Humans need moral laws that punish bad dessisions. Leaving ppl to themselves allows big organized groups to pillage rape and murder and so on.
So the reasons for change are understandable, but the execution a mssive failure

Contrary to popular belief, I think the villain ideologies are explored in a very simplistic fashion in the show. They basically framed every ideology in the show as the villains "going too far" without actually addressing the real issues that the villains brought up. The only villain that they really gave a fair representation to was fascist Kuvira. For example Ammon's movement of equality addresses really important issues but at the end they made him out to be a liar as if to say anyone who tries to preach equality and tries to go against the status quo is somehow a liar. Also after Ammon they just completely erased the the Equalist movement as if the discovery of Ammon being a liar somehow fixed the inequality between benders and non-benders.

  • @Alina_Schmidt

    5:58 „ideology taken too far“
... but that just doesn‘t happen with Zahir‘s ideology. It‘s supposed to resemble anarchism, but doesn‘t resemble what anarchists would do. Zahirs actions isn‘t anarchism taken too far, but destruction and evil.
And in the end Korra doesn‘t learn anything from that. She learns to accept that violence happend to her, but nothing about questioning that there should be hirarchies and leaders.

Cool motive, still a murder is how I would sum up the villains of this show. Their goals are usually understandable, but the way they try to achieve them makes them look delusional and insane, hence why their still villains at the end of the day. Like, did Zaheer really think that no one would rise up to seize power from the leaders he would have killed? And there’s also Amon saying that he was going to equalize the entire planet. Good luck with that one mate.

My main problem with book 1 of LoK, is that Amon says he wants equality between benders and non-benders, yet his solution is the destruction of wealth (aka bending). The true goal should have been wealth redistribution which was and is always the goal of socialism, so basically instead of taking bending away. Amon should have been able to take some bending abilities/power of the bender, and then being able to give those power/bending to a non-bender.
What I'm saying is that Amon or his ideas should never be allegory for socialism due to Amon and his destruction of wealth and NOT the redistribution of said wealth.

2 out of 3 villains have public support, non benders supported amon, earth kingdom citizen suported kuvira, it makes me question if this is happening in real life as we speak.
In atla, we have no basis on why should we fear ozai as a villain, except he burned his son's face. But in TLOK, amon mastered blood bending to the point he could permanently chi block benders, unalaq and the meanest kite that ever flew team up to fight korra and as we know from avatar wan's story , a less powerful raava, then zaheer and his flying and his OP team, then kuvira and her unbendable mech and spirit vines energy that could blow a hole in a mountain, and that is the energy of a pencil size vine.
I'm so stressed out every season in TLOK because i'm like, how will korra defeat her enemies that is considered too OP in ATLA.
I guess i'm a plot driven person that is why i prefer TLOK than ATLA, everytime korra wasted no time to face the problem, i'm always like "yeah! that is my avatar."

ATLA Is a tale wich takes its time to exolore all sides of a world at war.
LOK is more action based lets do this. It was also planned with just one season wich then led to the villan each season vibe.
What ATLA did better is focusing on realistic relations and interactions between people.
LOK failed here with its realstionship drsmas and out of the blue brownie points couple. Overall we see less of the deeper interactions like Zuko and Iroh have.
That LOK did better in my opinion was make more compact but focused plots. You had less random encounters each episode like in Aangs more mythical journey and every episode was in some way part of the main plott against the main villan.
I see each show as a reflection of the main character.
Aangs story as a Passifist monk is more about fimding yourself and growing. While slowly gliding through your journey.
While Korra is down to the meat gritty struggle to eventually grow and overcome preassure.
The times of each also reflect a more mythical feudal time compared to the indzstrial revolution that opened entierly new possebilities for villans.

I admit, i never appreciated this on my first watch of the LOK series but as i continuously rewatched this, i realized Korra is anyone like us, modern millennials, who have grown up watching ALOA. We subconsciously relate to her story that we hated her in her reckless and somehow ignorant and stubborn ways like we all do while growing up and figuring out life as young adults. And those villains with their principles and backstories were and will always be present in our ever changing society especially nowadays as we slowly push our own ideologies in search for acceptance and validations from a previous generation enclosed with strict cultural traditions and stigmatism. LOK is not perfect just like our society nowadays, but it perfectly mirrors our generation right now and once again subconsciously tapped into our minds like ALOA to give light to the unspoken issues ever silenced by the villains it portrays in the show. 😌

amon: utalitarism... communism... equalism? I somehow have a hard time categorizing him. he wants equality, but the sort of equality is not a "economic" one, thus not making him a communist I think, but of potentiality. at the same time, he himself is the sort of leader, but wants the same sort of rights and abilities for everyone, basically crippling exceptional beings for "the greater good". But it is really hard to sort that into ideologies or forms of state or power today... he claims to be all out for equality but his own ethics and how he works is very unequal actually, there are a lot of conflicting things here at play, which to me makes it hard to properly categorize or recognize him. Zaheer is easy: Anarchy essentially, which means an absence of ruling structures, without any implicit judgement. Could usher in a new, free world, or dog-eat-dog world. probably depends on your philosophy if you think mankind is inherently evil or inherently good and will manifest itself as such. unalaq was sort of spiritual equality that also mirrors the anarchism to a degree. the separation between real and spirit world was deemed as not necessary or unnatural itself, thus wanting to have balance again by releasing the "dark" forces. Almost jungian in a psychologic sense, when you repress your shadow too much, bad things will happen as well. Kuvira was authoritanism/dictatorship, maybe even fascism, but I am not sure I would go so far down that route. Cause there was no ethnic cleansing or nationstate aspect to it, although control and punishment against the own people obviously as well, which is also a staple, but can exist indifferent ideologies (i.e. KGB and SS in fascism and communism, but something like modern chian fits, the GDR as well, but even theocratic states in the middle east). I really liked Korra from its concept, but I thought from both story perspective but also how it plays out in the show, it was somehow crippled, cool ideas, not really flawlessly executed. It is not a bad show by any means and much more brainy and interesting than the original ATLA, but I still like the original ATLA as as show a lot better.

She didnt suck in her fights, her spiritual side grew exponentially in book 2, and like CodyZooom said he spent 99% of any conflicts running, getting his ass whooped, or ending in stalemates.

And now compare this to LAB. Big bad firelord because he is... big and bad!
And yet we hear time and time again that LOK is bad and LAB is ideal. It is not like that. LOK is just more complex and developing lore. And Korra just is not a whizz kid like Ang was.
And still both shows are great.

The fire lord is bad because the once noble intentions of his ancestor have been twisted and warped. It’s actually pretty tragic. And the villains of Korra are kind of dumb if you think about it. If Amon had actually succeeded in getting rid of bending, then places like Zaofu and republic city would likely fall into some trouble since they kind of rely on bending for their way of life. And did Zaheer have a plan to account for the power vacuum he would create by killing certain leaders?

@Austin Johnsen Zaher had no plan because he was anarhist. I think your (perfectly valid) objection is more about ideology as a whole than red lotos itself.
Amon of course was blinded by his hate and was not thinking thinghs trough.
I do not claim those vilans aere justified or right. I think everyone of them had some points butthey were WAAAAAY to extreme with them.
With fire lord... i kind of ged what You are saying and allso kind of not. Like it is ki d of tragic but i kustthink we had to little of back storry of Fire Lord. If we had like an episode about him and his life i think he could have been much bether vilan

@@jdurthu4304 Anarchy is not about freedom and chaos as the show makes it out to be. Many anarchists only want the former. People I’ve spoken to (including a guy on here who claims to be a social science teacher) about this have told me that most anarchists are not as violent and insane as Zaheer is.
I would have loved to have seen one of the characters ask Amon what his plan was to make the world a better place when most people kind of need bending. What do you think his answer would have been?
The villains of this show really aren’t too different from how things went in avatar in which previously good intentions turn into something far more perverse. All Sozin wanted was to share the fire nation’s prosperity with the world.
And for the record Aang and Korra really aren’t so different from one another when their respective shows end. Neither of them really have to make a personal sacrifice for the greater good like they feared they would. Aang didn’t need to give up his commitment to the air nomad ways, and Korra doesn’t need to relinquish her role as the avatar as she knows it in a modernized world. They both get bailed out by something, wether that be a magic turtle, or another big bad villain that needs to be stopped somehow. Both shows kind of play it safe with a lot of the difficult questions they raise.

@@jdurthu4304 At least Ozai for as cartoonishly evil as he was had an achievable goal that made sense. Use the comet to burn down the earth kingdom to quell the remaining rebellions there, and then colonize the lands for the fire nation. Compare that to Amon’s goal of equalizing the rest of the world somehow, and Zaheer’s goal of killing leaders because that will somehow make everything better again. It’s stuff like this that serves to remind us that these guys are still villains of a kids fantasy show at the end of the day. It’s not too different from how things in avatar played out where previously good intentions got lost along the way.

Love your video just have 1 problem with your video you use the term racism incorrectly. The black lives matter protests are not protesting Racism they are protesting colorism. Black Americans are still Americans and as such the discrimination against Black Americans by other Americans can't be Racism. Racism would be like the discrimination against Asian Americans during the covid 19 pandemic.
