Finally! The Legend of Korra gets some appreciation! People really took this show for granted without realizing that it was one of the last animated shows to use traditional 2D animation, and it's a gorgeous looking show! Most animated shows these days are relying on a cheap flash or 3D animation, and don't even get me started on animated movies which dropped hand drawn animation completely. I personally think that The Legend of Korra is a brilliant show all around, not only from an animation standpoint, It's very underrated imo. Great video man, and it was awesome to see Toph and Korra's voice actresses!
Jae Myoung Yoo paying his artists by selling his own car for the money really hits hard. You can tell he has integrity and respect for his coworkers. All the strife the studios had to endure to make this masterpiece makes it all the more obvious how beloved and important the show was to them too. Studio Mir was so great to reclaim it, it really is THEIR show, and nobody could do it quite like they did! Awesome video, but I almost cried when they were talking about the animators sleeping at their desks
The reason why TLOK is still my favorite non-japanese animation work. Nothing can tops it, the quality and the beautiful fighting animation. I dont get why people still compares both Avatar series, but whatever it is, i'd still wish both series were adapted in today's time where they dont have the creative restrictions from Nick, like how they decided to tone down Korra and Asami's relationship because it wasnt kid-friendly back then. But now, time has changed...and how i secretly wish they were done during this present time. But whatever it is, thank you for this video Canipa. I know japan has a lot of good anime but i still feel Korra has the best fighting scene in animation history ever (i mean, when the characters in TLOK fight, they have that gravity y'know what im saying? they have that oomph weight, where you could just feel the pain and guts of the brawl just like watching a real MMA fighting match)
Honestly, I think there's a lot of people even at Nickelodeon who were hoping it was made a little bit later. It was a show that ended up being loved by young adults at a time when that age group wasn't watching TV anymore. A few years later, and it would've been greenlit as a very successful Netflix Original series like Voltron: Legendary Defender.
@@TheCanipaEffect i know i wanted to say "how i wish TLOK were under Netflix platform instead of Nick", but thinking back after how Netflix did Bryke dirty with the ATLA live action adaptation, i decided not to write that. But still, how wonderful TLOK would be (under Netflix) despite the irony, like She-ra. It was a real celebration to all representation 💖
@@alicesiapilus5410 It's a difference of production companies. Netflix doesn't usually have any creative input on the shows that are exclusive to their service. Instead, the Avatar live-action production company is the main one to blame with that IMO (Although I don't think any Avatar live-action should be made in the first place).
@@sxb2andtheotherguys Don't worry, I'm not one of the radical Korra gruppies, I myself recognize that some parts of the plot are sincerely insufferable, but nothing is perfect in this world.
Korra is rapidly growing on me as I'm starting to find the more subtle nuances I missed first time around. Biggest problem going into LoK from ATLA is the expectation of identical tones and themes from the original show. If you approach it as its own thing and not strictly as a sequel of the first it is much easier to appreciate. And the animation in LoK is absolutely brilliant, particularly the action scenes, and this video finally answered why that was.
One of the greatest things of ATLA/TLOK is the voice actors. Just seeing the start, made me remember that, they love avatar as much as us the fans, and when someone has a cool project to show or to dosomething new, they get involved! That's just crazy. And I love it Oh and, awesome video honestly. TLOK art style and animation was just so clean
Now THIS is what I call a proper Korra review! As someone who has watched both Aang and Korra in full, I enjoyed Korra just as much if not even more than the OG series. From the gorgeous steampunk art style, to the inventive worldbuilding, to the expressive characters, to the genuinely intimidating opponents, to the sappy humor, to all the innovations in bending and robotics, Legend of Korra is a MASTERPIECE. I was captivated by the show and its efforts to pay tribute to Avatar history, while not being afraid whatsoever of crafting its own history. Fans may always have more nostalgia for Aang and the epic finale that was Book 3, but I feel that Korra showed maturity and morality at a deeper level, which is everything that a sequel series should be and more. At the end of the day, I slightly prefer Legend of Korra, and it certainly does not deserve the hate that it gets. Well, haters gotta hate, but that doesn't mean they are right. :)
same here, I actually prefer Korra. It felt like that in The Last Airbender, Firelord Ozai was evil just for the sake of being evil. Korra's villains all had good reasons and intentions, kind of like Thanos in Marvel movies. Watching Korra made me consider whether or not the "bad guys" are actually that bad. Of course, in the end, it was obvious, especially with Unalaq, but still, it gave me a lot more to think about and the whole show gave us a better opportunity to explore different aspects of the Avatar universe, like the spirit world and how the Avatar came to be.
@@TobyKate Even in the case of Unalaq, despite being obviously evil, the way he manipulated Korra and told her exactly what she wanted to hear to get her to do what _he_ wanted was brilliant
@@supereinstien001 Yes and in the end, she left the portals open which turned out to be a good thing (looking past the misuse of the vines in the last book)
Even though I still prefer ATLA and think it's a better show in terms of quality I still love The Legend of Korra. The characters are deep and enjoyable, the action and animation are just perfect, the way the worldbuilding is well made is clever considering they had to present us a "post-ATLA" world that felt like a actual evolution of what we've seen before, and the villains are some of the best I've seen in animation (besides Unalaq and Vaatu, they lack a lot in my opinion but still). The story might not be as consistently good, season 2 for example is really weak compared to the rest and some characters could have more development but that doesn't justify the hate the show gets, and I'm glad to see that more people agree
I have so much respect for Tenzins action scenes with all those layers so advanced and so well executed! Such a cool look in the end and i wish we couldve seen more of it but i understand why lol
What's odd is that when it came out, there was a big hype even during season one and later, and we were watching it with my friends, agreeing ATLA was better but we were seriously in love with the show and were blown away by the animation. Been hearing about the negativity recently, but...I always liked Korra. The characters were memorable, music was amazing, just as designs, environments, voice acting etc. Sadly you could feel that the story was meant to be a one season spinoff later expanded, but it's not really their fault. Knowing this even back then I just accepted it and looked at it from that perspective.
I get like a lot of the complaints about Korra.... but like holy shit the action dose not get talked about enoug, shit is so dope. Started watching korra after watching airbender over and over, then watched reactions over and over and then got really tired of it. Just burnt out on it and had no idea I wanted more action until I watched korra. God damn the fights were dope and there was a greater focus on them with no filler. Last Airbender is a masterpiece, but when I just want to watch some dudes brawl, korra is where it is at
@@BravoTango-vt8em nah korra has the better story and equally as good characters, korra is more complex and fleshing/expanding out the world and lore of avatar which is dope.
And then you've got people like Lily Orchard who lied to 5,000,000+ people by saying TLOK had poor animation quality. Imagine saying such a thing with a straight face.
No matter how anyone feels about korra's series its undeniable that the animation is satisfying to look at. Very inspiring story. Alright I got some line work to do
Really makes us appreciate the work gone into animation, so many people underestimate just how much time and patience is needed to draw a single frame or episode. It doesn't help that animators in japan are so underpaid as well
Legend of Korra is my favorite animated series of all time. Seein how much blood sweat n tears went into creating this show makes me soo appreciative. Fantastic vid y'all. I'll be sharing this always
The debate over which show is better will rage on forever but there is one thing Korra stands head, shoulders and torso over Avatar and that's the animation quality. And I think thats not a controversial statement at all.
Controversial argument? Naw. It's a fact that LOK looked visually better but that's because they had more experience. ATLA was made earlier than LOK so the visuals are naturally different. Consider the time of the premiere of ATLA, it was stunning of course (still is). Animation evolves and improves! Studio Mir is such a powerhouse haha
@faiza ahmed everything on the internet is either the best ever or trash with no room for nuance. Legend of Korra can be both inferior to Avatar TLA while also being a good tv show which is where I fall in.
I’ve held my tongue on LoK for sometime, but I must say, the creators of the show have some pretty big hearts as artists. It’s in the vein of Miyazaki the amount of care placed into their art. And they’re so magnanimous for looking out for their people and the overseas teams. I need watch LoK again just to honor their work
i'm no animator or even an artist, but hearing you explain the animation process with the aid of clips from korra, it's made me love korra even more. i seriously applaud all the animators for their work, specfically studio mir because _wow_ their work is so detailed and smooth, and they drew my favourite avatar wan episodes.
Hey to everyone who help and supports this channel a HUGE thank you so much, for putting all this details and facts together, every new video keeps on getting better and super informative, it's like a small documentary, not only taking about if and why the show/anime is good or bad but also the story behind it, I truly appreciate the hard work and also take your time PS. If you ever want to put time on it, I would want to hear your take on the animation of a donghua call 'Fog Hill of Five Elements'; Donghua Reviews video did a great job talking about it overall, just curious about your stands on the animation since your video analysis are more animation based
Legend of Korra had some of the best animation I've ever seen honestly. I wish the Anime studios were given more budget and more time to make their shows, Imagine just the amount of quality they could give!
I get you. Another part of why LoK stuck with me more is just preference. Parts of the plot and story-telling made me wince but the show made up for it in some way. Especially the Avatar beginnings and Book 3. But in any case, the animation is mind-blowing. Some people might prefer flashy and insane effects and angles, but watching the fights in LoK is like watching old-fashioned martial arts movies with no camera tricks and gimmicks. Just pure fight choreography and animation flex.
Same, and I went into TLOK wanting to see with my own eyes how bad it apparently was. And ended up loving it soooo much more than ATLA, and I grew up watching ATLA. TLOK amazed me that much, and not beacuse of the third season, which I find the weakest, but because of the other 3 seasons.
Toth in the intro? Boss move! Korra is such an underrated animated series, being bashed by so many lowlifes on the web. Thank you for highlighting every amazing thing about how beautiful this show was. What an awesome video.
I've always felt that Legend of Korra was some other level shit but now to actually learn about it in full detail makes me appreciate it that much more. Great video!
Great video as usual! I love learning about the little and big issues that LOK animators had to work through. Animators are often overlooked compared to voice actors and writers, but their work deserves to be uplifted
This documentary is so eyeopening. Korra's artstyle has always been heartbreakingly beautiful and after watching this detailed breakdown of its behind-the-scenes history I feel I understand it a little better now.
Brilliant video. Seeing the struggles they went through to execute their vision makes me sad about the initial response the show got. I didn't know about LoK until this past year and I don't know how people don't appreciate this show more. It has so many fantastic elements to it and I'm happy it's getting the recognition it deserves after coming out on Netflix. I hope the creators know how much their fans enjoyed their stories and characters. This video showed just how hard each person in the creative process how to work to make the series work, and I'm so happy they put in that work, as the results speak for themselves.
I love this video! The way you presented each challenge and used clips from the show to represent what was going on in real life was amazing and I think you did really well writing to engage the watchers and make them gain a new appreciation to the teams that put together Korra.
You know what. I didn't like Korra so much, in the story department. But now after this video, Maybe I was a little harsh on it. Thanks so much @thecanipaeffect
@@blodiaaa6990It's really not a bad story. Like not even objectively, the story beats are there and it follows all the structure of writing you need. @@Romaninx “if u don’t let your love for the old cast blind you” that is so accurate man. Also imo it doesn’t just go for Korra herself, but for the show. And I think LOK did a good job at creating new stories and characters for the fandom.
@@gurkenderschwinger1114 I think the story is insanely realistic and that’s one of the best part of LoK imo. Toph being a bad mother is realistic as she had terrible parents too. Aang being a flawed father is realistic bc he didn’t have parents and he had a duty as Avatar to revive the air nation with Tenzin. Korra’s struggle with mental health is insanely realistic. Korra’s romantic ineptitude is realistic bc she’s legit been secluded from society her whole life. The Red Lotus is a realistic splinter faction bc the White Lotus is obviously not the same as in ATLA. The rise of Kuvira is realistic due to the power vacuum. And finally Bolin’s story. He’s my favorite character bc of all he has to go through and how insanely realistic it is. An affectionate person who so often doesn’t get the affection reciprocated and thus in search of that affection whether it be from people or audiences in the movers or probending, often result in him being manipulating or abused and realistically, he continues to find himself in those situations, with Desna, Ginger, Varrick and Kuvira. Despite all of this people use the realism as some sort of criticism which is preposterous
Studio Mir and their work on Korra is so legendary that I still watch clips of certain fights to this day. Some of the most fluid and detailed work I've seen.
Ok the end of this video made me tear up. Wow I knew they had obstacles but this is insane. I can't believe they managed to survive and still deliver powerful seasons. Everyone involved in LoK and Avatar is seriously some the best creators. Not just talent wise but from this they are honest and actually good people.

No one's gonna call you crazy for saying that, they truly are. They're both so insanely great in their own right. Like even if ATLA did not exist, LoK would STILL be one of the best shows to have been made.
Honestly people can hate on LoK all they want, but the fact is, if ATLA was the best animated show on television, LoK was still the second-best and literally the only reason I'd have turned on the TV back when it was airing. Then it went online and I didn't have to turn on the TV anymore.
This video is an awesome treasure trove of behind the scenes details that I had no idea about (and I'm an animator). Thanks a lot for putting all these infos together, it's highly interesting. Super glad that they're making it big in America, nowadays, thanks to their work on Legend of Korra (which should also be coincidentally renamed Legend of Mir).

There's a ton of great non Japanese animation out there. Have you checked out any of Richard Williams' work? The Theif and the Cobbler is next level

No matter what people say, I still love Legend of Korra.
cool, at least someone enjoyed it.
@@sxb2andtheotherguys Don't worry, I'm not one of the radical Korra gruppies, I myself recognize that some parts of the plot are sincerely insufferable, but nothing is perfect in this world.
@@sxb2andtheotherguys i think thousands of people enjoyed it, it is an enjoyable show to say the least.
@@Dilligff couldn't have said it better myself
One of the greatest things of ATLA/TLOK is the voice actors. Just seeing the start, made me remember that, they love avatar as much as us the fans, and when someone has a cool project to show or to dosomething new, they get involved! That's just crazy. And I love it
Oh and, awesome video honestly. TLOK art style and animation was just so clean
I completely agree. Whoever sung “Leaves on the Vine” in Iroh’s tale is a very talented voice actor
@@georgesracingcar7701 Mako Iwamatsu!! Rest in peace...
We also have to give a shout-out to Andrea Romano, the voice director for both shows. ☺️❤️
Korra is an amazing show. Really stunning.
i wlll never not lose it when the "up next" with spongebob laughing pops up in the middle of the poisoning scene
THIS korra is so complex and good I love the show
same here, I actually prefer Korra.
I’m on my 3rd rewatch of Korra now. I love that show so much.
I love it more than atla tbh
i love korra too
I love The Legend of Korra so much, and I wish more Avatar fans would give this amazing show the respect it deserves.
Recently there are a lot of positive videos about TLOK, which I think is great!!!
Sadly, nostalgia gets in the way. It really is a good show. Sure, there’s flaws, but it has so much depth and great writing.
Agreed.
@stockart whiteman this comment is perfect
Last Airbender is a masterpiece, but when I just want to watch some dudes brawl, korra is where it is at
Yeah. Avatar wins in terms of story, Korra wins in the fight scenes.
Voltron: *am i a joke to you?*
@Akanni >story
The writing in the first two seasons was horrendous
>lore
Like how they shat all over Avatar's established lore and rules?
@Akanni Thanks for the synopsis. That doesn't mean it's well-written.
@Akanni thank you I agree 👍
@@BravoTango-vt8em nah korra has the better story and equally as good characters, korra is more complex and fleshing/expanding out the world and lore of avatar which is dope.

Avatar is most definitely the better show but LoK stands far and above with animation and fight scenes. I’d even say LoK has better side characters
@faiza ahmed everything on the internet is either the best ever or trash with no room for nuance. Legend of Korra can be both inferior to Avatar TLA while also being a good tv show which is where I fall in.

@@ExcuseMyWeebRudeness you have been the only sensible person about this dumbass debate.

Awesome. I'm not going to lie, I actually like Legend of Korra more than Avatar, and part of it is because of the animation. I mean just... damn.

@@Romaninx “if u don’t let your love for the old cast blind you” that is so accurate man. Also imo it doesn’t just go for Korra herself, but for the show.
