I couldn't sit through more than 30 minutes of earthsea.

When I heard that this could be a direct prequel to Nausicaa, my mind immediately went to that scene of a burning skyscraper getting destroyed by the Ohmu horde. This futuristic city could’ve been one of the few bastions of the old world that survived the Seven Days of Fire, only to be destroyed by the insects &/or swallowed by the jungles in the centuries after. Great, now I’m sad…. 🥲

Seeing this story as a metaphor for persisting thru creator’s block hits even harder after watching Kiki’s Delivery Service. 🥲

It took me many years to accept that Hayao Miyazaki wasn’t the person I idolized as a child. Still a brilliant man just not a very nice one…

Whisper of the heart is one of my favourite ghibli movies. Its so raw and real and yet so magical. This was the best commentary i've heard about this movie. You beautifully explained what's so special about this film.

Such a beautiful and relaxing film. It prompts you to stop for a moment and consider what really makes you happy and what makes you worry in your own life and perhaps think of things from a different perspective.

Great analysis. I’d say this lifestyle is only possible in a civilized, peaceful and orderly society like Japan. You can’t really sustain this lifestyle in most third world countries where pension is almost next to nothing, or in countries where your life is constantly threatened as there are wars, chaos, guns and gang violence. So yeah, consider yourself lucky if you get to live in a generally worth living country like Japan.

Such a wonderful encapsulation of the film while also highlighting an overall message making waves in the collective. This video hits very different if you had read Nausicaa manga.. Miyazaki's magnum opus. The "metaphorical release of Nausicaa" theory sounds very compelling to me. Also there's a really interesting series on this short on yotube channel of Toshio Okada (aka Otaking) I would be really interested in your thoughts on the manga!

I'm so glad I saw this film in my city's little independent cinema. It was such a special experience, especially during this period of restlessness and anxiety in my life, and I felt like time had slowed and life gave me some respite through this beautiful film. I'm also delighted that you saw this film and to hear your thoughts; I thought to myself "I hope Tim sees this film" as I left the theatre, haha :) Hirayama is a fascinating character - I loved watching him go about his daily routine but his reaction in the moments of surprise and disruption drew me in. Hirayama is a quiet and somewhat passive man but is certainly not meek, he does advocate for himself and doesn't suffer fools. Then again, he is let down by his colleague and ends up stranded on the road after bending too far to accommodate him. That said, he seems to be able to get back on track fairly smoothly the following day - I kept expecting an absolute disaster of a day but that's not where the film was going. Ah, there are so many details and reflections I could go over but instead I'll encourage anyone here to go and see this film if they haven't! Excellent video as always Tim! I'll be pondering over this film and your video for a long time to come :)

I saw Kairo (2001) recently and it got me thinking about Japanese society. After the Japanese economic bubble of the 1980s burst, you started seeing a lot of introspective pieces of Japanese media. But they tended to be somber, sad, and depressing. And you still feel that sentiment to this day in a lot of media. The bubble bursting started many of Japan's modern social problems, especially the hopelessness and loneliness epidemics (which have gone global). It is remarkable and nice to see a Japanese introspective film that isn't depressing. I will have to check this film out.

Watching "The Tatami Galaxy" of Mussaki Yuasa is the best life experience for me because this is the best way to get the most important life lesson: your life will never be perfect. Just like the anime protagonist that could get back in time and make things over and over never made his satisfied. Watch it and realize that mistakes and lessons you get are part of your life. On other hand if you don't dream you don't have expectations. Buy why we live for? Is this the better way to go through your happy life as a dreamer?

Man the first time I watched that short I was blown away. I couldn't stop thinking about it for days, and the song On Your Mark became one of my all time favorites.

I've seen few of Koreeda's movies without knowing they're shot by the same director but now, that you've put her next to each other, I can see the handwriting. Anyways, thank you for such a wonderful analysis. When I saw Shoplifters for the first time, the ending got me sobbing but it makes so much sense because the way the family functioned was, in a way, an utopia, bound to break anytime.

I once had a friend that kept insisting that Yuasa's work was mediocre and that they wouldn't watch his work because it looked goofy and would much rather watch something like vampire hunter D LOL. Glad I can just send this to him without having to write paragraphs.

Chiikawa is so cute and charming and I really enjoy those little cartoons of him, and I gotta say when jaiden animations got so obsessed with him when she went japan last year it felt like he was just another cute manga character like hello kitty or whatever, but now he is just pooping off and I respect that
