Hama's goal was always to pass on her skill/technique to Katara. She WANTED Katara to learn and demonstrate blood bending. Katara gaining control over her own body showed that she was starting to bloodbend, at least blood bend herself. I think Hama pulled back her attack on Katara once she did this, bc again she WANTED Katara to blood bend. The next step was to blood bend another, which she did on Hama. Hama knew she was old, and not long for the world. She may have even died in prison shortly after (or been put to death). She didn't care, bc he goal of passing on the skill to a younger water bender was complete. Katara wasn't "stronger" she was just younger, and probably had a lot more energy to fight old lady Hama, who also never wanted Katara to loose.

It makes sense that Katara was able to resist Hama. Katara is called out as being a prodigy of a waterbender, on top of being an extremely dedicated student. Not only was the moon out at the time, but Katara was affected by the bloodbuilding until she broke Hama's control. The how of it - Katara just bent her own blood.
As for why Aang wasn't able to break Hama's hold - keep in mind that while he is also a bigger prodigy than Katara (and had Katara as a teacher throughout the series), he wasn't as dedicated a waterbending student. Airbending is his specialty, and (as a kid at least) he did not have the deep understanding of waterbending that Katara had, nor did Hama give him the advice on how "water can be found anywhere" or such. He didn't even know bloodbending was a thing until Hama was puppeting himself & Sokka (plus he was locked out of the Avatar state at this point in the series).
The only issue with bloodbending is how it can be done so freely. Hama makes note that she needs the full moon (when a waterbender's power is at their strongest) to really use bloodbending. That should be the case for any bender who isn't an Avatar or otherwise a prodigy or experienced master (and even a prodigy-master like Katara should still be exhausted from using the technique without a full moon).
As for the villagers: these kids just saved them from a much more dangerous force after hell knows how many of them were imprisoned for hell knows how long (and it is specifically Hama's victims that came out to help the kids & arrest Hama), and they have no idea that Aang is the Avatar. A bunch of tortured, tired, weakened villagers are not going to threaten, insult or challenge a group that just saved them by beating a threat that was too strong for said villagers, even if one or more of those saviors was part of an "enemy nation" (something most civilians likely do not have strong feelings on - the fire nation is not being constantly attacked & destroyed by the Earth Kingdom nor Water Tribes after all). Maybe later on someone said something off screen, but by then the gang was long gone.

I don't think it's that overpowered. Full moons only happens once a month, which is a pretty big drawback compared to other bending special abilities (lightnning, levitation, metalbending etc...). Chances are, you wouldn't get the opportunity to use it when you actually need to.
Plus, once a waterbender is revealed to be a blood bender, their ennemies would make them a priority target while making sure to avoid facing them during a full moon.

Love the video. Respectfully, katara IS a prodigy. She's not a sevant who instinctively picks things up like aang did with 3 of the 4 elements, she does have to work. But not very hard. She has so much talent she went from struggling to wrangle a wave to competent fighter just from hanging out with aang to show her bending basics that are universal to all martial arts, and stealing one waterbending scroll. Then she leveled up to master in the month (tops) she was in the north pole. She is a stronger waterbender than aang (throughout the lore, we see evidence of avatar companions being better benders of their native element than their avatar sans avatar state) so it absolutely makes sense that a waterbender of her caliber boosted by the full moon could shrug off that shit when properly motivated.

  • @CryoJnik

Back in season 2, Iroh during his instruction to Zuko brings up learning from sources outside your own nation, heck it's how he developed Lightning Redirection. It's the same lesson that Aang has to apply with being the Avatar. Something that few people catch during Katara and Hama's fight is that Katara is also applying that lesson when instead of doing the usual flowing around attacks she stops Hama's water not unlike how an Earthbender would defend themselves. Who's to say that the the stubborn mentality of an Earthbender couldn't help her to resist and ultimately negate Hama's attempts to control her along with her natural talent?

it honestly does not matter how strong it is because it has high skill requirement, environmental requirement, and even a drawback in terms of morality. there are so many reasons blood bending could not be used that it evens out how op it is. this is like saying an ultimate ability in a video game is over powered even though the whole point is that it has high reward and therefore it needs high cost.

btw even more reason to not use blood bending: you are busy controlling someone so someone else could ambush you, making you vulnerable. it is not completely irresistible as shown in the episode (katara being strong enough to resist it is perfectly believable since this is happening near the end game of the show and the show has demonstrated that katara has gone through growth in strength).
it also technically has not shown that if a blood bender controls another bender, the blood bender can use that other person's bending (as far as I can recall), so you are making yourself busy controlling someone without getting their full power. you fight as someone else without their full power and janky movement (this is honestly a bit of a downside too) instead of being yourself with all the powerful water bending abilities

Bruh, the fact that Katara in the FIRST episode was able to massively change the way the water was moving when she was mad and not actually trying??? Katara is not a prodigy in the normal sense like Azula, Azula was able to grasp and perfect techniques far faster than most and absolutely outshines Zuko on a fundamentals and power level. Katara as you mentioned is getting more and more effective in precise and specific skills such as the sweat bending scene AND Hama is helping her to grasp the ideas and fundamentals that it represents.
Plain and simple Katara is equal to or better than Aang on the power level for water bending in this episode and her specialized techniques are FAR surpassing his. It is constantly reinforced throughout the show that, while he is getting the hang of many of them, Aang is not a specialist, he is a generalist with great power. Katara is inventive and very aware of what can be done within her own element and while Aang does the same in his element, air, he spends far more of his time using other elements to substitute innovations in those other elements than making drastic and unique innovations in those ones.
In sum, Katara is really fucking powerful and the fact that she has learned things the way she did makes the situation that she finds herself in on the full moon pretty reasonable. Getting control of herself from Hama is a result of her power and ability to learn technique and Aang not being able to fight it off is fair in the sense that he has never been anything BENT before.

@@jasonfairo1195 I do get your point but simply put Katara’s prodigy status is irrelevant since that is not what the show values 99% of the time. This is not dragonball z where the strongest powerlevel win. In avatar we see creativity and skill being what decides most fights. The only fight that really turn out that way is probably the Katara and Hama one and the aang ozai one.
