👎 Why Verstappen REJECTED Mercedes' approach

- Max Verstappen is Red Bull's 'franchise' driver in F1. But it could have all been so different, if Mercedes had succeeded in trying to beat Red Bull to signing him up in 2014. So why did Max reject the team that was dominating F1 at the time?

I imagine a 2007 Alonso-Hamilton situation happening again with a Verstappen-Hamilton duo 🤔
Yeah but Max wouldn’t be a straight rookie like Hamilton in 2007. Mercedes would probably have financed Max’s GP2 season in 2016 and then put him in a Williams or Force India for 2017. Max would only join Mercedes in 2019 if Valtteri has a poor 2018 like he did irl.
Max wouldnt get unlimited private sim testing with real car data like in the 2000s though
@@proximacentauri3342Lewis was only a rookie to Formula1 racing. He was more familiar with the team and the car than Alonso.
@@chrispalmer3096 Surely already being in formula one and winning world titles gives you an advantage over a rookie, lets not pretend that every other driver didn't also test before racing, out of all the others Lewis had the least hours of testing.
@@proximacentauri3342I think Max would join 2017 instead of Bottas. And I think Max would really challenge and maybe beat Hamilton.
Can't fault Toto's comments here
Agreed, for once and only once
He's just being a smartass since he couldn't snatch MV.
i call BS on that. that's just making lame excuse for their own missing out
Had Max joined Mercedes, I can only imagine the fireworks that would go off. 2016 would have seemed like a peaceful season to Merc team compared to what they might have had to deal with.
What do you mean? He probably would have been at Williams that year and join Mercedes after Rosbergs retirement.
@@YourivanderHoeven That's what I am saying. Post Rosberg Merc still had a championship winning car. Imagine Max and Lewis both trying to go for the WDC. There would be massive explosions
@@gouravghosh588mclaren all over again .
and i mean Alonso= Hamilton Mclaren
Why? Max would have driven away like a minute every race. There wouldn't have been much competition, at most when Lewis was lapped.
@@rowanbroekman3929well mercedes has been built for Hamilton, so it would have probably taken a season or so until things had readjusted and Max had begun mostly beating Lewis
But yeah it's hard to imagine Max not beating Hamilton soon after Rosberg had done that
Verstappen vs Hamilton in that Mercedes team would have been far worse than the Nico rivalry and I imagine Verstappen would have won at least half of those seasons if not more
No mate, not at this early stage in his career
But the first part of your comment is accurate 😂
@frederikb6935 I agree with tye first part of the comment as well. Toto and Merc fans would be pulling their hairs while the neutrals and rival fans would have a ball. 😂
If max took Nicos seat at the end of 2016, Lewis would maybe win 2017, 2018 would be close but I'd give it to max and with his confidence up and through him refining his driving, Max easily takes the titles from 2019 and onwards.
@@zaynsadiq5536 Actually, if Max took Nico's seat at the end of 2016, Vettel potentially wins 2017 and maybe 2018 due to the Mercedes drivers splitting points, and then the real fireworks start to appear in 2019.
If max went with merc he probably would have gotten promoted to f1 when nico quit, if he hadn't already been placed at Williams. Either way he'd probably have ended up in merc when nico left and it's probably good for lewis' 2017, 18, 19, 20 championships that he didn't go there. If nico could beat him max definitely would have had one or two from those yrs. If that happened, Lewis wouldn't have the prestige of a 7time champ and would be challenged by the young guy. Who knows how it all could have played out. Maybe Lewis might have jumped ship to rb or ferrari at some point if he didn't have any easy teammate like bottas for all those easy championships
Toto wouldn't have given Max the Merc seat until 2022 I guarantee it _especially_ after Nico left. That was clear "protect Lewis at all costs," panic mode so the last thing they would do is give the seat to Max.
Nah as talented as Max is Toto wanted a push over to move over on command. You can see Max won’t move even after winning the title already that year
Bottas an easy team mate huh
So that's why Toto was salty this past weekend 😂😂😂
Ephesians 6:10-18 says, Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. The bible is no old book. You have to really let Christ open your eyes; to see the world in shambles. Many people say it's a religion to lock up people in chains, and say it's a rule book.. why? Because people hate hearing the truth, it hurts their flesh, it's hurts their pride, it's exposes on what things have they done..people love this world so much, s*x, money, power, women, supercars.. things of this world. Still trying to find something that can fill that emptiness in your heart. You can't find that in this world.. only in Christ, the bible is no chains, it's a chainbreaker. Breaking your sins into pieces... Repent now, and turn back to the true Lord only.. God bless.
😊
Toto still salty but Merc track record with its young drivers is horrendous.
Can't help but to wonder if this is why Toto is making comments about the 15 wins in a row for RedBull or 10 in a row for Max. He's clearly at his peak as a driver and Mercedes faults aren't entirely on its car
Iirc this comment was made some time ago. I saw this some time ago so it wasn’t during red bulls dominance
I don’t think it’s entirely the car. George and Lewis are amazing drivers (not a fan) but that car seems like it’s a handful and a half (beautiful car though) it’s a shame
@@charlescassidy2023the most beautiful car imo, in history
I can’t stand Toto and Merc, but there is not one reason for anyone to be mad here. This worked out best for both teams, both team principals, and both drivers. Heck, even for both of the drivers dads.
@@charlescassidy2023if Hamilton would stop snapping everytime a driver defends harshly against him and run into them on purpose at the next chance he gets that would definitely help the team massively. His crash with Piastri for example was revenge for Piastri pushing him wide the lap before and did not only damage his car, but he also got a 5 sec penalty for it. Which is a joke for what he did, but that's another topic.
Imagine Jos in a fight with Toto. lmao
Honestly think Jos'd take the win there. Completely depends on what car they drive tho, if it's F1 Jos definitely takes it.
TLDR: Jos was already a millionaire so the money wasn't as appealing as a seat
Actually he was on the edge of bankruptcy in max’s f3 season, until they signed with Red Bull.
Stfu if you just talk shit without any knowledge.
Or was he?
Mercedes would dump him to Williams or loan him to Alpine like with Ocon. Nevertheless Toto and Lewis are going to listen a lot to the Dutch anthem.
God I wish we could see a season of max and lewis in the same car
Lewis is past his prime, while Max is just in it. It would be a walkover for Max. I’d like it if Lewis was 10 years younger or so.

In fact Toto advised him to take the Red Bull deal!
Max and his father Jos had been open about Marko's offer!
With Merc it would have been several years at least, to Toto's regret and he said if they could get a seat in Torro Rosso the next year, they'd be crazy not to take it!
Funny how it was Marko who told Lauda to sign Hamilton because Marko thought Ham wouldn't stay in underperforming Mercedes team at the time and would join Redbull in couple of years time. How's that plan backfired lol
Choosing RB paid off big time.
Go Max! Congrats on the record.
Now make it virtually unbeatable - how about a sweep of the rest of the season. Can you imagine?
I can.
honestly i would’ve argued w u at the start at the season but what the fuck max
he never has any bad luck and reliability issues either so he will get it
@@mh518 As a famous golf pro once said, "The more I practice, the luckier I get".
The "luck" you;'e speaking of is simply the convergence preparation and opportunity. And, did you forget that last year Red Bull had car failures causing more than one DNF and still killed it. Everyone at Red Bull from design to race team is working hard and its paying off. They are a dedicated race team and a well-oiled machine with one of (if not THE) best race car drivers in the world.
@@BobC59 The quote is good but doesn't fit into this discussion at all. Car reliability has nothing to do with preparation of a driver. It's not a convergence of preparation and opportunity, it's him being lucky his car isn't breaking down. Unless he practiced designing engines and car components that have great reliability, his preparation has nothing to do with this. He is the best driver on the grid right now but all I'm saying is he's extremely lucky that in 10 races his car hasn't broken down or even had the slightest of failures once.
@@mh518 If you took more than 3 seconds to actually read my comment, you'd see that I referenced everyone from design to driver and all points in-between. Using your logic, Toyota drivers are more lucky than Fiat drivers because their cars just happen to run more reliably by happenstance.
Toto is salty after all these years

Max would have destroyed him I. The merc… that’s why the deal never happened.
How old are you?
You realize that this deal was before Max was in F1? So why would they think that Max would destroy Lewis before they’re even seen him in an F1 car
@@mujtabarehman5255because this was the same 17 year old who had every F1 team falling at his feet, begging him to sign with them. The same teenager who almost won the GP3 title in his first year of driving open wheel race cars in the fourth fastest car of that season.
@@mujtabarehman5255 as a canadian hockey fan, we saw tapes of Sidney Crosby as a child, the hockey world watched him grow up because of his god give skills at such a young age kept improving. If a team could have signed him as a ten year old they would have. I’m saying that Max was one of those generational talents from a young that don’t come along too often. He could have challenged Hamilton harder than any other team mate if Max would have started his career in the best car on the grid (at the time)
@@zaynsadiq5536He never won GP3 what are you talking about 😂. Mercedes weren't ready to offer Max a seat. Redbull did with Toro Rosso. Shows that Merc didn't want him badly.
Should have put him in Williams and then in the merc in 2017. How great would have that been for the fans.
I bet if Verstappen joins Merc instead of Bottas Hamilton won less titles
es por esa razon que a Max no le ponen un compañero agresivo
Poor Lewis would have been in a mental institution and I can only imagine how many tables and headphones would have been smashed to bits😂
So I’m an alternate universe you could’ve had max in a Mercedes with either Lewis as a teammate or Lewis in another car….. possibly even a Ferrari. That would’ve been amazing to watch
Best thing that has ever happened to Lewis is that Max didn’t join the team
Toto being sensible
Glad Verstappen didn't end up as a number 2 at Mercedes
I would have loved if he took down Hamilton much earlier in the same car... would have saved a lot of unnecessary discussions!
Tbf, they probably would not clash/crash into each other as much if they were on the same team
Would’ve been amazing watching a way younger Verstappen totally slap Hamilton in his own car
As a Max fan and Merc hater I think it would have impacted only one of Hamilton’s championships at most. Also, Max wouldn’t be having the success he is right now if he were at Merc.
@mcb0b1 if max was at Mercedes they would have challenged in 2022. Change my mind
Max lost to Ricciardo in 2016 and 2017. No way Toto and Lauda would sign him into the Mercedes seat. He was going to be doing F3 and F2 championships to earn the seat.
And even in the most unrealistic case he had gotten the seat for 2017 and onward Max was just too young to be contentding for the title with such an aggressive driving style that wasn’t fully developed yet so at best he could have started the Alonso-Hamilton scenario once again and there was still a hungry Vettel so go for a title with the Scuderia.
@@lilibordei721lmao max was nowhere near of winning anything relevant before the 2021 season came. Just like hamilton is not winning anytime soon lmao. When are you going to learn that having a great car was a huge part of the success that hamilton, Schumacher, verstappen, vettel, alonso attained?
2 aggressive drivers on a team would not work well. I don’t even think they dislike eachother I just think they’re styles are very similar so the crash a lot

Red Bull was on a winning streak at the time. Merc was an ugly duckling. The modern Mercedes team had only won as Braun in ‘09 and struggled massively for results (even with extreme talent) until they nailed the turbo/hybrid regulations. From ‘14 on it didn’t look like such a great move until RB clawed back to the top.
Max would fall out with anyone who would challenge Max, or as he is known as. Don’t give anyone a cars width. Then whine when someone doesn’t give a cars width. Max you need to practice what you preach. Instead of running other drivers of the circuit, it’s just not the way to be classed as a good driver. Also it would be interesting to see how you get on with a teammate who will overtake you. But I think you have it in your contract. That they cannot challenge you.
It would have been awesome to see those 2 in equal cars, regardless of what side your on no one would be able to argue one was in a better car, but ye that would be a violent season.
Well, it appears that things turned out for best 😊 Max and Red Bull found a relationship that works and capitalized on it.
The real winner is Hamilton. He was able to pocket a few more championships not having to compete against Max in the same car. It worked out for everyone.
well when the number 2 is better than the number 1 things goes sideways just look at nico rosberg
How does it help individuals drivers to get along ?

Well I think Max wouldn't challenge him in 2017 or 2018 because he was a bit too raw though very talented. However 2019 would of been the start and 2020 would been very close! Coincidentally 2019 and 2020 were Hamiltons best years. He mastered his race craft and he drove flawlessly.
This is not true Jos Verstappen spread a rumour to Helmut and Christian that Max was offered a seat for Merc. Actually there was no offer from Merc but it was a ruse to make RB jump the gun and they did.
Well in fairness Toto has the driver lineup of Hamilton-Rosberg. Of course he didn’t want to give up 2 seasoned veterans for an unproven driver.
Mercs dodged a bullet, Hamilton-Bottas was the greatest 1-2 of the turbo hybrid era, Bottas was calm yet compettitive and Lewis kept up the pace to put run him since nobody else was gonna catch them.
