      A rather superficial review of Formula 1 by an outsider
      I originally thought this channel could provide high-quality in-depth discussions even from other perspectives

    Red Bull has Adrian "Ground Effect" Newey, the aerodynamicist who wrote his thesis on ground effect back in the 70's and has been on the pinnacle of motorsport design for more than 40 years.

    Another thing not mentioned that some viewers may be unfamliar with about Max is that he is into sim racing. He pretty much has a built in sim setup in his apartment with a fridge of redbulls beside him and the 2021 World driver's championship in top of it. There's entire compilations of him stream racing while his girlfriend's daughter is in the background. Like he bleeds racing both on and off track. There's a philosophy of "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday" meaning you win a race to market yourself better, while Max's philosophy is basically "Win on Sunday, Race on Monday", he wins and then after winning he goes straight to the digital version to keep racing

    • @nomiguda

      He is also an admirer of sportscar racing, and has said he will be in sportscars after F1 before. Sportscars are the cars that race at Le Mans, a french race, the most famed in Endurance Racing, celebrating it's 101st anniversary this year. He also has ownership of a GT3 team which he wants to put gifted sim racers into real cars.
      Socialcredit is right, Max's life is racing. He bleeds it.

    I think the biggest "problem" in F1 is Max. When he, like many other GOAT tier drivers (Hamilton, Vettel, Schumacher, Senna...), gets the right tools underneath him, he's unstoppable and most of all unbelievably consistent. Take him out of the car and we have an exciting season. Schumacher won every third race in a span of 14 years (1992-2006), and winning a championship every other year. Lewis broke countless records driving the same Mercedes Bottas did, and no one looked at Bottas and thought "that's a dominant car". Lewis made it look dominant, so does Max make the RedBull look untouchable. Let's start giving Max the praise he deserves. Great video, btw.

  • @migoliveira28
    @migoliveira28 10 месяцев назад +312

    Also one of the things that makes the RedBull car dominat, is because they have one of the best, if not the best car designer in F1 history, and his name is Adrian Newey.
    He won multiple Constructors Championships with Williams and McLaren and now with RedBull when Sebastian Vettel was there and now Verstappen

    • @sherlockmaverick
      @sherlockmaverick 10 месяцев назад +34

      Not just Adrian, however.
      While Adrian has been a key factor, he just provides an overarching look over the entire team's operations, while the hundreds of engineers the team employees, including Technical Director Pierre Wache, lead the main engineering of the car. He has mainly only been involved on the suspension side, but that was one of his key involvements, given his former experience with ground effect cars (including his thesis on the same) emphasising the need for a good suspension system to ensure proper aerodynamic operation.

This is what F1 is and has been for a very long time; sometimes, there are two dominant teams (McLaren and Williams in the 80s and McLaren and Ferrari in the late 90s, for example), otherwise it is usually one team ahead of the others with blips along the way. 2005-2009 was more competitive but at the end of the day it was still mostly Ferrari and McLaren, plus Alonso in a Renault.
    Newer fans need to understand this as seasons like 2021 are very rare.

    And let's not forget that the RB19 was a car... *_that had limited testing time in the wind tunnel._*
    They had a 10% reduction on the time originally assigned (of their approximately 850 hours of testing, they took 10% off, and if you compare it, for example, to HAAS, the last team, which had about 1,400 hours assigned... it is much difference), and even they seemed surprised. That's why in 2023, Red Bull literally told everyone "if we did that in a more limited time, guess how we'll do once we get 100%..."

    What i think is interesting is when the drivers were asked what they would do if they wearnt an F1 driver, only Max said we would want to race or be a part of racing as something else. Only other person who said something like that was Fernando who mentioned we would like to be a cyclist. Max is a racer and nothing else, if he isn’t driving a car he is SIM racing and he’s one of the best sim racers in the world too. This guy’s consistency comes from the ridiculous amount of time he spends on track in game.

    There's so much missing from here. It's been a problem since the godawful 2009 regulations change, and arguably can be traced back to rules designed in 1994/1995. Driver skill overtakes are nearly dead and most passes are made by drivers just getting in position, pushing a button, and sailing by because you can't defend. Tracks have been ruined, and newer circuits are not made to facilitate the showcase of the skill of the driver. Even that wouldn't be a problem if it was possible for teams to put their drivers on alternate strategy, which was often a key strategy before 2009, where focusing on running in clean air to maximize downforce and tire life could let you win with ridiculous strategy calls. But the restriction on race lengths, the unrealistic specifications that Pirelli has to build the tires to, and the removal of refueling means that in the current day all the drivers will run one of two strategies for 90% of the season (hard to medium tires or medium to hards, just one stop) and unless you're in the top team or bottom team that year your result mostly comes down to where the push button overtakes land you.
    There is nowhere left to show driver skill in F1 outside of qualifying and sometimes the first lap of a race. And that would be perfectly fine if F1 did what 60's and 70's era Can-Am did and committed to being a championship focusing on engineering development, but those have become more restrictive since, again, 2009, making it virtually impossible to catch any decently funded and decently ran team that finds an advantage two years before regs start. In other words, F1 has the worst of both worlds: A very limited amount of car development, and a lack of showcasing of driver skill.
    People shouldn't have to watch a F1 world champion play video games on the weekdays to be convinced of his skill.

    • @TheMcIke
      @TheMcIke 10 месяцев назад

      @@dicki97 I think most Americans hate ads. So, yea, it may be an attention span thing in that we hate having to watch commercials for products we don't want while we wait to go back to the action.
      My issue with last week's race was that it was boring. Max rockets off the line and that's it, game over... Lollipopman F1 Comics take on it was spot on: they could have started playing the Dutch National Anthem before the lights went out.
      I don't watch NASCAR, so that stereotype doesn't apply. I do watch IndyCar, IMSA Sports Cars, 24 Horus of Le Mans, and the Tour de France and find the ads on those broadcasts to be very frustrating. It sucks having the action interrupted by a commercial. And I'll be honest, I DVR those just so I can skip the ads.
      Since NBC and Paramount/CBS now stream European football without commercial breaks, I enjoy watching those matches (though again, I sometimes DVR things, especially mid-week matches which overlap my workday, just so I can skip the halftime report [Paramount is nice in that they don't even include a halftime report in their replay streams]).
      I think the pace of American football is to slow because of the commercials. The NHL does better by limiting commercial breaks to 3 per period (first stoppages in play after every 4-minutes, 10-miknutes, and 16-minutes of game clock time each period).
      And just to repeat; I may not be a stereotypical American, but my issue was that the race was boring. I have no problem watching from lights-out to the podium ceremony, if the race is interesting. I don't find watching mid-field and back-markers entertaining...

    • @dontworry1302
      @dontworry1302 9 месяцев назад +4

      @@dicki97 If someone is willing to sit through 39 commercials for the entertainment, that would indicate a much higher attention span, so not sure what your point is. There is just far less happening in F1 when compared to a series like NASCAR where the cars travel in a large pack most of the time.

    • @Kinuhbud
      @Kinuhbud 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@dicki97 that really nothing to do with what was said... I believe his point was if it wasn't one team dominating over and over, then it's some other team. Makes me think of the Premier league and how... how many different teams have won in the last couple decades?
      Also, american football requires a long attention span, as it's really a game about attrition IMO. Of course it has it's big highlights and plays, but the game is really strategic and about setting a pace. Time spent possessing the ball tends to equal victory. Every sport is cool when you really get into it. I think basketball is the coolest, but some people hate it.

      Bragantino has a small fanbase here in Brazil, so most of the teams and media ignore Red Bull. It's evident that the team is better managed now than before, and with less money, they are usually among the top five in the national league (although they have yet to win anything relevant).
      Overall, I would say Red Bull has a positive image in Brazil. I don't know any Bragantino fans myself, so I can't say for sure if they liked it, but it was a second division team before Red Bull acquired it, so probably yes.

    A brief summary to the answer of the questions at 1:19:
    How does RedBull dominate F1? They dominate with a combination of 4 factors: car, driver, team, and competition. Without a fast car a fast driver and good team will be like Aston Martin never able to get wins. Without a good team a fast driver and fast car will be like Ferrari always making mistakes costing wins. Without a fast driver the car’s potential won’t be realized; (Perez finished so far being Max it looked like he was in a different car). Therefore if the competition is lacking in any of those 3 areas then they’ll never fight for the championship. Wins occasionally but never the championship.
    Is it a problem for the world’s fastest growing sport?
    Both yes and no. Since the beginning of F1 there has always been a dominant team or driver. Whether it be over a single year or multiple years there’s always been dominance. So this is nothing new. But it’s not good for the non racing fan. A racing fan will always watch the battles for p3, p7, even p19; because they love cars racing against each other. And that’s not dependent on position. The casual fan will watch for the racing but mostly for the headlines. Who’s winning, how close is p1 and p2. Anything else is boring to them, and since F1 is marketing to the casual then yes it is boring. And will ALWAYS continue to be until F1 becomes a spec series. Where all the cars are equal, and the team matters less.

    I agree with a lot of the comments here that Max is an incredibly talented driver, but something really has to be said about the designer of the cars, Adrian Newey. The man has been designing F1 cars since 1988, and his cars have helped drivers win 13 driver's championships and teams win 12 constructor's championships. It's not just Max, it's the combination of one of the most talented drivers on the grid with one of the most talented designers in the paddock.
