      @ZennExile 2 года назад

      well you're in for a horrifically sad nightmare when you google how thousands of innocent children the media didn't fixate on for political traction also died the day this shooting took place. Every life is precious and children's lives are the most precious of all, but 19 out of SeveralThousand shouldn't be getting 99.9% of the airtime. It is though because gun debates are perfect to rile idiots up for election day.
      This is the same trick they used to get Trump elected. Airtime = engagement = political donations. They know you cannot see past the outrage long enough to do the math on your own. They know the death of children in school will break your hearts and more importantly loosen up your wallets.
      If you really cared about your kids lives you would push for Driverless Cars and public transportation. And you would have also schooled them in a private school or at home with personal educators far away from institutionalized learning which in and of itself is more dangerous to children than all mass shootings ever combined.
      If you can stop crying long enough to google the numbers, you should clearly see that at any given time we have 30,000,000 kids in institutional learning facilities (schools) at any given time. And the likelihood that any of those 30,000,000 kids will be killed in school by gun violence is VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY SMALL. Yes that many very's and all in caps.
      Nearly all kids who die prematurely do so at home, under the direct supervision of loved ones, or in the passenger seat of a car. Think about that long and hard once you are done crying for just 19 of the thousands of children who died this day, like every other day, and all other days to come. There are regulatory measures we can take that are bipartisan and affordable to save thousands of children's lives every single day. There is and never will be a measure of gun control that will provide similar protections. Even the complete banning of all firearms would result in MORE harm to children than less.
      Never respond to anything in anger. Never make a decision using feelings. Humans do not possess the innate ability to judge risk, or calculate probability. You cannot and should never trust your gut reaction to events like these. The math cannot lie to you. Your gut will about 50% of the time.

And since bribery is legal in the US, if you make money locking people up, what do you do? Bribe politicians to lock more people up, society be damned.

Do I think that’s wrong? Absolutely. But that’s currently how the system is designed. That’s why there’s little consequence for these situations because by the time the truth comes out - if it ever does - to much time has passed to actually do anything. But the public carrying guns all over the place stops it. I'm sorry but I'm so sick of seeing US citizens who talk about how tired they are of it, yet half hearted protests if any and life goes on as their children die. You as US citizens don't care, if you did you would do something about it. It's like bullying in schools, teachers are sick of seeing it but they are perfectly happy to watch it continue. I can't hold it in anymore because you don't give a damn, you just don't want to see it. Corporations own your country and you know it and you like it. If you didn't you would have done something, anything by now. Not a protest, not a march, not even a half assed attempt at making a difference. It's been happening all my life nearly and i'm in my 40's. Stop saying you care because you don't, your children die and you say your tired and you go on with your life with zero done about it. If a million US citizens marched on to the lawn of the captial, sat down and said I'm not moving until you do something that has a shot at working it would have to change. No violence needed. But you as a country won't, because you don't give a damn. You just don't want to hear about it. PROVE ME WRONG. I'm over 40 and it's been happening all my life and every time people in the US go, "This time it will be different." No it won't.

      I agree with you but i also agree with Phil. On Phil's plane, it's hard when you're a spokesman for many people on the shitty (and sometimes great) things going on in our world, and honestly to invigorate people, you have to be emotional... i think he has it right in that that you have to be angry or upset to change things. To persuade other people, you can't be happy and content, otherwise change cannot be made. But... that's not to say, if you were in this situation (or one you commented about), and you have to go back to everyday life, that angry is the right way to think.... in your perspective, i think you have it right - going back with a positive perspective is the right move... young kid's lives and minds depend on it.

But the anger is absolutely right. We have to have rage in order to get a change -- I guess I didn't express myself well really. Because there is joy and good still there, I feel energized to keep fighting. I wanted to share that moment because without those shining moments the world can feel so dark for me and I thought it may be the same for others. Here in Sweden we have to prove that we can swim at least once in during grades 1-3 (ages 7-9, the school chooses when), then at least once in grades 4-6 (ages 10-12, again the school chooses when) and lastly at least once in grades 7-9 (ages 13-15, again the school chooses which year). During grades 4-6 and 7-9 we also have to learn about "common sense", safety and how to handle an emergency when in and around water. During grades 7-9 we also have to learn CPR to complete it.
      We only have mandatory school up until then but to continue with life you'll have to go to a thing called "gymnasium" which is like our high school. During that time we have a course in PE and during it we have to show more extensive skills when it comes to the things we were taught in PE during grades 1-9. For example we have to learn what to do if the ice breaks and we fall into the water, have to show that we can float, tread water, swim 2km, dive and swim under water, etc.
      I'm glad we have all this education about how to behave around water and that you should be careful but also to handle emergencies when they occur and how to swim, during our whole time in school. This makes sure that no matter your socioeconomic status or if you're an immigrant, you will have to learn these vital skills and you'll be able to be around water and enjoy it.

      @@pollytix7271 First of all, money isn't being "thrown away on Ukraine". There's a reason why it's called the world's bread basket. If that conflict isn't resolved quickly and both Russia and Ukraine restart their exports, there's going to be a massive global grain shortage. That includes feed for livestock in addition to wheat and rice as ingredients for everything else. Meanwhile, China has been hoarding a giant supply of grain. What do you think will happen to US society if the Chinese Communist Party gets to decide who eats and who starves?
      As far as proposed solutions go, they clearly haven't worked or been implemented in a manner where they're readily accessible or effective. Especially anything with the word "health" included.
      And really, how desperate do you have to be as a nation if the answer to gun violence is to add more guns, by posting armed guards or war veterans at entrances to schools or arming teachers? Soldiers shouldn't be made shoot more people on their home turf after coming home from war in other countries, and we need less guns around children!
      Also, a gun in the hands of *every* teacher? They have to deal with misbehaving children every day! We've seen teachers clash violently with students before! You really want to put a deadly weapon in the hands of people who spend several hours a day dealing with 30+ brats who won't sit still and be taught? Just imagine the worst case scenario -- that's what you're asking for here!
      As far as "gun free zones" go, those hardly matter when the supply of automatic weapons remains a possibility in the next zip code over, particularly across political borders. Of course gun violence continues to happen in a Democratic state when there's a Republican state nearby, pushing pro-gun propaganda. Who do you think Republicans are going to target for speaking out against them? The ones with "a liberal agenda" of course! The only way any one gun free zone can work is if the whole country is rid of them. Freed from them, if you will!
      In fact, how's about this for a concept: America is not a free country until it is free from fear. Fear of existential threats to life. Guns are explicitly designed to be an existential threat to life. You are not free while guns exist in such a readily available manner.
      The USA is not a free country. But it could be. And it should be. You've made changes to your constitution before, that's why they're called amendments. You've even amended amendments before! It's time to do it again, this time to the second amendment. Because every child should have a right to both an education and to life. And no parent should have to bury the body of their child because of some punk with a gun.

At this point, I don't think that question works anymore; for many people in this country, there isn't a number. Half of all schoolkids in the US could die in mass shootings tomorrow and they still wouldn't do anything substantial.

      To republicans what’s a thousand deaths compared to a million dollars? They don’t care so long as they are comfortable. They need to be made uncomfortable, their houses need to be protested at, their place of work protested at, their car blocked off from pulling out of the driveway, their livelihood made more difficult. They are killing people, a mild inconvenience like a five hour delay to work is nothing compared to the loss of a child due to something that could’ve been prevented. Cowards, vipers, the lot of them.

    • @JetZV
      @JetZV 2 года назад

      @Abasisten Of course not, but people driving their cars into crowds are already rare and cars themselves have had regulations in place for decades. You have a point about the culture, though; the US has an obsession with guns that other countries don't have.
      That being said, nobody needs an AR-15 for home defense and they certainly don't need it to hunt. As for my question, it's meant to be a test of character. If the person has an actual answer, it shows how self-centered they are. If they don't have an answer, it's worse because that means that nothing will change their mind.
      I can see why my question would get that kind of response, but I'll put it into perspective: I'm Canadian. Outside of a few hunting rifles owned by distant relatives, I have never seen a firearm up close. I also have a half-brother living in the US who is around the age of these kids. I get wound up by these stories because I don't want him to become another statistic.

    • @arlaux1099
      @arlaux1099 2 года назад

      @Abasisten Is it legal to walk around with a fully loaded rifle, handgun, and with ammo in your country with zero permit and zero license?
      Another question: would you hand the keys to your vehicle to someone who doesn’t have a permit and doesn’t have a license? I wouldn’t. In America cars are literally required, I work 40 miles (64km) away from where I live. That would be a hell of a bikeride if it was downhill but I live in a very hilly area. I need my car, but I also agree less people deserve them. Cars should be harder to get and the test to get them in the US is way too easy, seen by how many crashes there are in the US. Citing one case of a person using a vehicle to harm others does not compare to the thousands of gun deaths that happen every year. Making them harder to get, and having a system in which you destroy illegally owned guns or hold them for legal purchasers, would lose the amount of guns in criminals hands and lower the amount of guns in general but also allow those we deserve them (who have gone through training etc etc) to have them.
      This ‘media is the problem’ stuff is the same thing as saying ‘games cause violence’, there hasn’t been statistical evidence of that happening. Not even anecdotal since a lot of these shooters when they do play games play like Minecraft or American Truck Simulator.

    • @arlaux1099
      @arlaux1099 2 года назад

      @Abasisten I never said we needed to remove all guns or cars or whatever, I mean if I could I would I’m sure you’d also agree if you could snap your fingers and suddenly no more need for guns and no more need for cars you’d snap your fingers INSTANTLY. I do want to get to a world where the only people with guns are the best of the best, the people who truly put the effort in. But that’s a hard thing, the things I argue for will get closer to that, but gotta get beyond republicans and the NRA. I own guns, and I like them. I just think less should have them.
      Media doesn’t incentivize being scared of their fellow neighbor, or at least I feel that’s very very VERY oversimplified. As a trans person, I am genuinly terrified by some of my neighbors. Why? I live in Texas, and I’ve been threatened before, and part of that is supported by Republican leaders. I’m not afraid for no reason, I don’t have a gun for no reason. The media can be overzealous in how it treats various groups, but we have to look at what is and isn’t realistic. And overwhelmingly the anti-realism is more right leaning news stations. Most news is simply just trying to spin whatever story to make money, which is grim but hardly to blame for someone purchasing 2 rifles, 400 rounds of ammo, and going on a rampage. People don’t go on rampages just because the news said something. It might help, just as violent video games make violence seem less abhorrent but aren’t rhe cause so too do news stations make things less abhorrent but also aren’t the cause. To say otherwise is abject oversimplification. Like I have a reason to kinda be afraid of some republicans, especially Republican leaders. But republicans don’t have a reason to be afraid of me, a 5’4 trans person trying to just be happy and play video games in peace.
      I will say the claim that cops shoot unarmed black men is true, they shoot unarmed people in general way too often. We need to have better trained officers, which is what much of the protests were about.
      Also Darrell Brooks is nowhere I’ve seen tied to any of this?

(ETA: I believe this was 2011-2012, so not that long ago.) The pastor was a creep and always made me feel icky. My parents wondered why I didn't go to church with them or why I didn't want to go to his house when they were invited. Then, we found out that he committed adultery and was fired from the school and church. But I will never be convinced that it wasn't rape. Good riddance to him. We always talk about how stupid it is that schools don't teach us things that are actually useful in life. That's what they're doing in Shanghai. I wouldn't mind that here.

    This story just makes me want to cry that's what it does they might have to put this guy back into jail after 32 years of being in jail for wrong prosecution?! That is just disappointing in so many ways this is exactly why I don't trust the judicial system in America.

      Did you type that before finishing because if that story didn't do it the last one sure will.

    “Exhausted rage” captures it perfectly. Today, I just cried off and on, and hugged my kids. All day, I just spontaneously hugged my kids. I am so sick of “thoughts and prayers.”

      Yup I’m right there with him. I have nieces that age and I pray to whatever being is out there that I never get that call. I can’t even imagine what you parents are feeling.

      Schools need better security tbh. The school I go to has overweight "security guards" and others that are elderly. The front doors that are supposed to be hard to open can be open easily by just using your own strength.

      @@Bird.Lover6000 "I am so sick of 'thoughts and prayers'". You know what I was commenting on when I called it "edgy atheist" cringe, which is why you conveniently left the "edgy atheist" part out. This is poisoning the well to an extreme.

      Considering the story of the innocent dude that spent 32 years in prison and to find out he may be going back and he's still praising god...
