Steve was genuinely brilliant here. I mean how he brought in such beautifully crafted sarcasm and humour. He's a comic genius and the true acting legend, Jack Lemmon!
Jack Lemmon: One of the greatest actors of all time. Starred in one of the best movies of all time. Has definitely the best tombstone message of all time. Jack, you were the best!
He did some great stuff in the 90s and beyond including "Leap of Faith," "Father of the Bride," "Bowfinger," "The Spanish Prisoner" and "Shopgirl." He also had a box-office hit in 2003 called "Bringing Down the House," a goofy but funny comedy with Queen Latifah. He is also a successful book author and works on the stage from time to time, in addition to performing banjo on Grammy Award winning albums.
@@bryanismyname7583 I can only comment on two of those. Bowfinger was dreadful. And Father Of The Bride (a Spencer Tracy tour de force)...with or without Martin...was about as ill-advised a remake as It's A Wonderful Life would be. I think the absence of the other titles on UK TV screens (as opposed to his earlier titles which still appear...in fact I enjoyed DRScoundrels on TV yet again the other day!) suggests that channel schedulers don't pin much hope on them. On the other hand every dog in comedy has its day...and seldom does that 'day' last too long. Ten to fifteen years seems to be a common stretch to burn brightly. Martin is about there.
asubjectiveopinion--Are you going to post this same comment regarding a fake comedy bit on each Steve Martin thread on the Internet? It is not only disingenuous, but tiresome. Subjectively speaking, of course.
The man couldn't act to save himself. One dimensional and always whining. Wise up. Some people don't have it and we should face it. Never play a leading man, maybe the barber or saloon keeper.

because he didn't write his monologue.

Martin Short describes him as a unique shade of pale... hilarious these guys...
Do you know if Tony Curtis was at this ceremony? Seems odd if he wasn't...
He did the same tribute for Gene Kelly. Still funny though.. (:
In the days before youtube he used this same routine many, many times. Always very funny, of course.
Steve Martin did that quite intentionally. It's called a running gag.

Jack worked with the GOAT Marilyn Monroe.... i am jealous!
So hard to make a comment with one hand in my pants
One of the most mysterious things to me was--Steve Martins brilliant career in the 1980's, suddenly going down the drain--WHY?

Not that funny
Paul Simon one was fresher and funnier
Let's just hope that Steve Martin doesn't piss into Jack Lemmon's grave like he did to Peter Sellers and Phil Silvers.
What?
