I've been watching mft lense videos for a couple days now before I make my first "nifty 50" purchase for my pocket 4k. This video has been the best demonstration I've seen comparing lens differences. The majority out there say you can't go wrong with the lumix 25mm and hard to argue that for the price but wow what a difference in the sigma. The lumix blur looks very distracting, I'm glad I checked this out! Most definitely subbed.
Just found this video while searching for the Sigma 16mm f/1.4. Just a comment about the Lumix 25/1.7. The bokeh rendering is a very "old school" lens style rendering - like the old Contax Zeiss 50mm lenses from the mid 70's to mid 80's, and the old Nikon 50mm from 60's through the 80's. Even the old Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF lens, had a very similar bokeh rendering. Some call it busy or fussy. I call it "bubbly and painterly". It's certainly a very unique rendering style - which, in certainly applications, is absolutely stunning. However, the Nikon versions of those old 50mm lenses, were very 'glowy' and not overly sharp wide open, and thus fantastically problematic. I didn't find them appealing. On the other hand, the old Contax Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 was razor sharp wide open, with that bubbly painterly bokeh, which makes it a very desirable lens - again, in certain applications. The problem with the Panasonic Lumix 25mm is, much like the old Nikon lenses, it's not sharp wide open. That's unfortunate, as I don't buy fast aperture lenses to stop down to f/2.8, much less f/4 or f/8 - to increase sharpness. I want that dreamy background. I definitely appreciate both rendering styles. But they have to have some level of sharpness to make it work. Great video, and thanks for the comparison. :)
Hey just found your channel. I’m also an MFT user in SA. I have the 25mm Lumix Leica F1.4 but I got it second hand for a good deal. It’s amazing BUT the Sigmas are just incredible especially for the price. I have the sigma 56mm F1.4 and like you mention the sharpness and overall image is next level. I will probably get the sigma 16mm soon to replace my Lumix kit lens 14-42.
One of the best review & comparison I've seen!! well done!. Btw what lenses were you using for the A-roll shot as well as the B-roll showcasing the lenses in this video?
Great video and quality is superb! I have all 3 of the sigma as well and absolutely love them! I haven't gotten to use them as much as I would like but watching this is very inspiring and made me want to get out there and do it now! Thanks for that. Congrats on the baby coming! Always a good thing! Looking forward to some new videos from you folks! Always good stuff!
Thank you Chuck, glad I could inspire you to get out there and film with the Sigma's again. Busy finishing off my review on the 56mm, another amazing lens, really enjoy it!!
Rich is the Man! Sigma 30mm and 16mm all the way... I love using the Sigma 30mm together with the Sigma 16mm version for an awesome image. Comparing that to my Sony 18 - 105mm f/4 G OSS... I mostly always grab the Sigmas first because of the image quality (except for a i need a do-all lens for vacation, then I grab the 18 - 105). Lately I've been using the Sony 10 - 18mm f/4 OSS and that image is sharper and overall better than the Sony 18 - 105mm so now when I reach into the camera bag.... its a toss up between the Sigma 16mm and the Sony 10 - 18mm... I guess for hand held shots, the Sony is preferable and for locked off shots, the Sigmas are preferable.
Wow! That was awesome and you have a beautiful family, congratulations! Now, thank you so much for making me wish the lens so bad. I have to get the 30mm and I don't have the money right now. 😅🤷🏽♂️
Thank you so much Eduardo, I really do appreciate the kind words. Honestly it's an amazing lens, the 56mm review is gonna be just as cool, the soft bokeh it produces is amazing.
Glad it helped. Not at all, I much prefer it. Never been a MAJOR fan of 50mm (full frame)...I generally gravitate towards more telephone looks. In saying that I'm sure the die hard 50mm guys would possibly take some time getting used to it. But for me, 50mm just had too much distortion.
Very usefull comparison. Panasonic 25mm F/1.7 does not render the best background, but price&dimensions make it very attractive. I own it and it's not bad at all. I am wondering if Olympus 25mm F/1.8 would perform better.
Hey guys, I’ve got the 25 mm 1.8 Olympus myself and I can’t say anything bad about it. From what I can see in this video, the bokeh is imho way better than the Linux’ bokeh and the sharpness is just sooo good. I can definitely recommend it. The build quality is also very good, although it’s also made out off plastic (with a metal mount)
Excellent comparison. I came to the same conclusion myself and switched from the Panasonic 25 f1.7 to Sigma 30mm f1.4 about a year ago. Zero regrets. The Sigma is slightly bigger, heavier, and more expensive but worth it IMO. Great illustration of the benefits in your video!
Also, I don't own it but it's worth mentioning the Sigma 56mm f1.4 is another wonderful portrait lens if you can handle the working distance. It comes weather sealed and very reasonably priced. Well worth considering for those who haven't already purchased a longer portrait lens.
I love my 56mm. I tried a used copy of the 16mm, but the focus ring was very loose, and there were some other issues, and I returned it and bought the PL 15mm. So now I am thinking about the 30mm, which is how I came across this video. You make a very good case for it. Sometimes, the 56mm is too long. I want something I can isolate a subject with, but also include a lot of context. A 25mm is the obvious answer, but I just want something that will get just a little closer. And it looks like the optics are as good as the 56mm.
The 56mm is definitely ultra sharp, I do find that the 30mm optics isn't as CRAZY good as the 56mm, but nevertheless still more than any client expects.
Great comparison! I've been using the Lumix for many years now and found this video as I'm considering a used Sigma 30mm f1.4. You just helped me make my decision! Thanks! 😊
I mean, the Sigma is twice as expensive, 5mm more zoomed in and faster. Sigma manufactures THE best lenses out there. This comparison is somewhat unfair therefore. The Lumix is awesome for the price to be honest, you cannot get anything even close to it at the price.
It's was good... The Lumix and sigma are below $300 and have similar viewing angle. For someone on budget wanting a fast autofocus lens it's them or that yungnuo rubish
Differences are minimal and hardly signifigant. Sigma have improved a lot since I used their 24mm wide angle in the 1970s. This optic had built in filters, which were useful, but the excellent build quality was let down by soft images at wide apertures, although in those pre digital days when the instamatic provided most people with images they thought unbeatable you couldn't really lose with more serious cameras plus basic optics.
Very good comparison. Maybe best on RUclips! Very nice footages! How did you do thise stabilized parallax camera movement an dolly zooms? Did you used electronic gimbal?
A fantastic review, as I an owner of the sigma I thought of buying the Pana but I film with a lot of bokeh, so thank you for the beautiful shots of the beautiful lady . Really Well done also the comparison with the same subject size in the frame which is rare but a must!
You're so welcome. I think the review points of distance to subject is because I always see reviews and there's so many things important to me as a creator, so glad you appreciate the effort 🙏 56mm Sigma review coming soon!
Rather extraordinary how different the two lens are. I can't wait for your sigma 56mm video...I have the Zuiko 45mm and 60mm and am wondering if it's worth picking up the Sigma
These Sigma's are insane, and to think the Sigma 30 is the LEAST sharpest out of the Sigma trio, that just shows how amazing they all are and how bad the Lumix is. The talking head is the Laowa 7.5mm f2 - absolutely amazing lens.
@@RICH_Photography I just bought the 16mm 1.4 and Rokinon 35mm t/1.5 - and the Sigma is AMAAAZING. Now I need a Sigma 56 (baby-steps to Christmas in July!)
Even your family video is so professional.. beautiful. Thank you for sharing about Sigma 30mm. I’ve ditched my Sony ZVE10 and lenses, bought myself GH5ii. While looking for panny prime lenses, i stumble on your videos. Really an eye opener for me. Thank You!!😊
Good review, i shoot sony but I bought a used GH5 and aftr so much search found ur channel publishing stuff which i want to see..i shoot photos with Nikon full frame but i love GH5, bought 16mm 1.4 sigma, looking for used Sigma 30mm or Olympus 25mm 1.2 or may be 18-35 if i dont find other lenses..we dont hv sigma lenses available for MFT in India..
Thank you, a lot more GH5 and GH5s content coming. The Olympus lenses are amazing, those f1.2 lenses are so sharp...but the pricing is insane, considering what Sigma is offering. No doubt if I had the opportunity to get the Olympus f1.2 lenses I'll take them lol :)
Ever since getting my sigma 16 1.4 I've thought about getting this over the Leica 25mm 1.4 compared to the 25mm 1.7 that was obviously my first kens on the system. Might sell my 25mm and grab this one I do like the bokeh from the sigmas
I was in the exact same boat. The Lumix was my first prime. And it is really good for the price. But side by side, there's no comparison. Every video I now do I can see the difference.
@@RICH_Photography Yeah I think I'll sell this one and grab the sigma to match with the 16 which I almost always use currently. I shoot mostly car related content and the 30 seems to look great and would be useful for a lot of shots compared to the 25mm which I've shot one video on
"The Lumix is a little too busy, due to the seven blades." The example was shot wide-open at f/1.7, so the aperture blades are completely out of the way, and won't affect the image at all. You have a perfectly circular opening, from the lens elements and the barrel of the lens. The number of blades ONLY affects the bokeh when the lens is stopped down from wide-open.
Hi Stephen, the number of blades definitely affects a lens wide open, if you watch the mechanical parts of a 5 blade, 7 blade or 9 blade, it severely affects the bokeh at wide open.
@@RICH_Photography take a look at this video, starting at 4:20. ruclips.net/video/cR7cibDvYyo/видео.html Perfectly round aperture when wide open, as the blades are completely clear out of the way. Once the lens is stopped down, the blades form a pentagon, so now the blades will be affecting the bokeh. When the blades are completely hidden away from the optical path they don't affect anything at all. 7 or 9 blades, remove a few and have 3 blades, or 0 blades, or put 40 blades in there but hide them away beyond the lens elements, behind a cover plate, and they don't affect anything at all.
hello and congratulations on your video. I write from Italy, I am inexperienced and I am forced to use AF for my video clips. I have a GH5 and I fell in love with this Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens. but since the GH5 uses contrast focus, which seems to be not compatible with this lens, I would like to ask you for advice: is it really not recommended to use this lens for videos if you intend to use AF only? The focus is really much slower and more complicated than a normal 25mm 1.7 Panasonic? Thanks for your suggestions
Would love to try the 10-25 some day. Im a major fan of run and gun so fortunately I have a GH5 and GH5s so usually have 2 lens setups ready to go. Zoom definitely helps in run and gun, but that Leica for the prize should have been an f1.2 would have been the best lens invented.
@@RICH_Photography THE 10-25f1.7 is already as big as it can reasonably get. I can't imagine how big and heavy it would be at f1.2. 1.7 is fast and shallow enough IMO. Especially for a zoom with a fixed aperture.
They are 1.4 and 1.7 for speed and light gathering. They are only 2.8 and 3.4 only when comparing the out of focus to 35mm but many things effect that.
in my experience the sigma 30mm f1.4 is pretty soft wide open in photo, maybe it's my copy? but i heard some say the 30mm lens is the softiest among the sigma trio
You're not the only one, my 30mm is also quite soft for stills. And its autofocus in video is erratic. On the other side, I also own the 16mm and the Olympus 45mm f1.8, and they are super sharp in photography. And their AF doesn't let me down.
Have you had a chance to compare the Sigma 30mm F1.4 and the (superboosted) Canon 50mm F1.8? Any point getting the Canon of already owning the Sigma? Tks!
The Sigma trio are odd focal lengths on MFT. On APSC they are more c onventional and are equivalents of 35, 50, and 85mm lengths. However, their unconventional focal lengths on MFT of 32, 60, and 112mm is a real advantage, and I like them. The Lumix 20mm slots in as complementary to these Sigmas, however at the 25mm length the Pana-Leica is not so standout and it becomes a toss-up between the more contrasty Panasonic, or the more creamy Olympus f1.2 Pro and its wonderful manual focus clutch.
Just to update.. i bought used Sigma 56mm. It is awesome for street video and if you want to be anonymous.. the bokeh in video and pics are beautiful. Now hunting for used Sigma 30mm.. for my nifty fifty lens. Found one about USD $150.. hahaha still saving my money for it. I already have Lumix 20mm and i don’t feel the need of 25mm.
a little late for the party, but hope yo see this) as far as i understand you are shooting yourself on a laowa 7.5 , and the room is totally dark, with exception of the lighting scheme. so my thoughts are that you are using the maximum f stop of 2, otherwise you would have to bump the iso, but i dont see any noise in the dark areas of the picture. SO the question is - how do you manage to always stay in focus although you are leaning towards the camera a lot ? the picture is razor sharp!! i will not find any peace until i get the answer))) btw, thanks for the videos on the sigmas!!
@@RICH_Photography right. I suppose I'm more curious about the look of the glass than the specs, but yes the specs are definitely more similar. I actually really love the look of the Leica 25mm 1.4. Something special about it that I honeslty can't quite put my finger on, but I'm sure it has something to with the the Magix dust that Leica sprinkles on glass lol! I also love the look of Sigma glass in general, so that's really why I would personally love to see that comparison. And apparently no one has done it yet? I could be wrong but haven't found it yet
There is a decent difference in the aperture of the Sigma 30mm F1.4 versus the Lumix 25mmF1.7, plus the difference in focal length. Sigma 30mm is closer to the subject, which means the bokeh will be softer. The closer you get to the subject with the Lumix 25mm f1.7, the softer and more pleasant its bokeh will be, but in terms of aperture it loses to the Sigma 30mm F1.4. Therefore, comparing these lenses is not entirely correct. It is necessary to compare lenses of the same focal length and aperture ratio. Sorry for my English, it's not my native language
Well spotted, the reason for the comparison is these are 2 entry level M43 lenses at similar price points and very similar focal ranges. This is why there's a test at the same distance, and same crop. Comparing these lenses for someone deciding between these 2 is very relevant, and the Sigma is definitely far superior to the Lumix. Well done on the English, appreciate the comment, your English is actually very good 🙏
@@RICH_Photography appreciate the response I’ve jumped systems a lot. Mostly shoot wildlife and macro (my degree is in natural resources). I am back on m43 with a G9. Just picked up some basic primes to start taking pics of family and pets and travel spots. I have the laowa 17, lumix 25, and lumix 42.5. I wanted to get the Leica 25 because of the weather sealing but the price has kept me from pulling the trigger. I liked my d7200+35 1.8 and z5+50 1.8S for documenting family stuff. I don’t really do video, mostly stills.
Dude I was gonna get the lumix, but FUUUUUCK that. I'm getting all three sigma. The 16,the 30 and the 60. That and the lumix 45-150 (OR whatever it is) will be my kit. I'll hang onto the 14-45 kit lens because of the OIS, but those sigma are going to cover everything I need to do. The 30 and 60 for portraits the 16 for super wide shots, the 30 for utility.
The huge diference just exists because Lumix has at least one plastic lens inside instead of real glass, I had to do some cleaning inside because the Lumix was dusty, that's why I've came across 1 lens made of plastic!!! thanks for the video anyway! If I had seem it before buying the lumix, I would never buy it! thanks!
Thanks, that was a really enjoyable video. I think you were a little harsh on the lumix lens. I don't own either, but the textured background-blur on the lumix makes it interesting, and makes it unique. It may not look "pro'' like the Sigma, but let's face it, the crop sensor format allow us amateurs to mess around with a light portable kit, without breaking the bank. Could you expiriment with the Lumix with flaring and fringing? With its fewer blades, it may make some pretty unique "sun stars".
The value doesn't change and neither does the light....BUT the look definitely does. A 25mm f1.4 on M43 looks like a 50mm at f2.8 on full frame. I have a video coming out on this soon.
@@RICH_Photography yes, but if you start using f numbers to describe DOF you're just going to confuse the crap out of people who don't know any better. That f number is a mathematical expression of the relationship between the focal length and the diameter of the lens. It's a ratio.
The f number is almost equivalent to the t stop which describes the light. Not the look. Hence the comparison states it gives the full frame aperture look. But keeps the light benefit.
@@Fotozones Technically, you're correct. However, anyone who expects F1.4 on M43 to LOOK LIKE F1.4 on full frame is in for a very rude awakening. The whole point of equivalence is to help those new to photography to understand how to get a LOOK with different systems.
@@alantuttphotography there is no "equivalence". They are different systems with different characteristics. Teaching newbies the wrong thing is really not a good idea.
Something is wrong with that lumix 25mm lens copy. Looks like things or not even blurry but duplicated. Weird! Sigma is very sharp and gives a nice bokeh.
Hi, I currently have a pen-f that I love and 2 objectives sigma 30mm 1,4 and the 45mm 1,8 olympus. As a budget I have 1300/1700 Euros and I am looking for one or 2 "definitive" objectives for the meantime (later you will see) that are capable of doing different types of photography ranging from weddings such as portraits even in low light, football matches mainly during the day and occasional landscapes.I am looking for objectives that are unique as compactness, performance and versatility compared to all systems photographic apsc, full, frame etc ... ...if I stay in the micro 4/3 I'm interested and I don't see real alternatives to the Om system / olympus 8-25mm, 12-100mm, 20mm 1,4 and last probably also Om lenses 40-150mm f4 or sigma 56mm 1,4. I am confused because if the 20mm 1,4 can replace my sigma 30mm in all ways, even as a bokeh, I would take it with my eyes closed. 12-100mm and these would also be useful for taking medium and long distance portraits of the spouses. If I really have to keep my pen-f with a single lens I would think of the 20mm or 15mm leica or the announced 9mm leica 1.7 ... or also have a second no micro 4/3 body with other lenses also used? Thanks.

Another amazing review! The final section is just stunning!!! I am sure these videos you create will become such treasures later on. Thank you!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it 🙏 I hope so too!!
Such a great quality video. As this channel gets more visibility, I believe it’s going to really take off. Thanks!
Thank you so much Gerald, really appreciate the kind words! I can't wait to keep making cool content and inspire others like others have inspired me.
Even your family video is so professional.. beautiful. Thank you for sharing about Sigma 30mm. I’ve ditched my Sony ZVE10 and lenses, bought myself GH5ii. While looking for panny prime lenses, i stumble on your videos. Really an eye opener for me. Thank You!!😊
Awesome! Thank you!
I really appreciate the kind words on my little family, so humbling and so glad you picked up a GH5ii.
You enjoying it??
No doubt if I had the opportunity to get the Olympus f1.2 lenses I'll take them lol :)
is this footage graded? HLG? Looks amazing mate!
Thank you so much, it is slightly graded, it's the natural profile with everything set around -1 to -2
What about this comparison between sigma 30 1.4 and lumix 25 1.4?
Plz
What is best
@@RICH_Photography take a look at this video, starting at 4:20. ruclips.net/video/cR7cibDvYyo/видео.html
Perfectly round aperture when wide open, as the blades are completely clear out of the way.
How about Yongnuo 25 1.7 and Olympus 25 1.8?
What about Summilux 25mm f1.4? Have you used that one and would you choose it over Sigma 30mm?
Excelent comparison and a wonderful video!! Congratulations.
Great video! Glad I went with the sigma
Yup. I have a bunch of panasonic lenses but I live for sigma lenses and the 10-25 leica.
Good comparisons, I just got the 16mm, looking to add the 30mm for more bokeh.
The 30 is amazing, check out the review I did on the 56mm...bokeh beast for sure!
They are 1.4 and 1.7 for speed and light gathering. They are only 2.8 and 3.4 only when comparing the out of focus to 35mm but many things effect that.
Final video was just beautiful!
Excellent review my friend! continue the great work, looking forward to new vids from you.
Great, great informative comparison! Big help! Thank you!
You're welcome 👌
in my experience the sigma 30mm f1.4 is pretty soft wide open in photo, maybe it's my copy? but i heard some say the 30mm lens is the softiest among the sigma trio
You're not the only one, my 30mm is also quite soft for stills. And its autofocus in video is erratic. On the other side, I also own the 16mm and the Olympus 45mm f1.8, and they are super sharp in photography. And their AF doesn't let me down.
Which lens is better for manual focus in slow motion mode, since auto focus doesn't work in Panasonic cameras?
Have you had a chance to compare the Sigma 30mm F1.4 and the (superboosted) Canon 50mm F1.8? Any point getting the Canon of already owning the Sigma? Tks!
Have you had chance to compare Olympus 25mm 1.8 with that sigma 30mm 1.4??
Unfortunately I haven't.... Olympus support in South Africa is pretty poor, they won't even borrow me a lens for a review.
The Lumix 1.7 25 feels like the bokeh is green screen, the sigma is way better for sure, thanks for the comparison!
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it 👌 love the description on that 1.7 bokeh, definitely has a green screen kinda cheap feel.
Thanks for the review. Will be adding it to my all olympus lens kit :) Beautiful family by the way
The Sigma trio are odd focal lengths on MFT.
Excellent comparison. Thank you very much.
You're welcome, thanks for the support 🙌
Is compatible with lumix g7?
Yes it definitely is!
Shall we use this lens for pansanoic lumix G7
Is the barrel distortion corrected in camera when shooting JPG on Lumix?
a little late for the party, but hope yo see this) as far as i understand you are shooting yourself on a laowa 7.5 , and the room is totally dark, with exception of the lighting scheme. so my thoughts are that you are using the maximum f stop of 2, otherwise you would have to bump the iso, but i dont see any noise in the dark areas of the picture. SO the question is - how do you manage to always stay in focus although you are leaning towards the camera a lot ? the picture is razor sharp!! i will not find any peace until i get the answer))) btw, thanks for the videos on the sigmas!!
I had a 25mm... the first one was very sharp... and the second one was almost as sharp as yours... so it depends on which one you have
This was a great comparison. But I would love to see the leica 25mm 1.4 versus the sigma. Seems like more of a fair fight
I suppose it would be more similarly specd but price wise is still way off.
Well done on the English, appreciate the comment, your English is actually very good 🙏
What a great comparison!!! thank you!!
You're welcome 🙌
I know you did the 56 vs 42.5 video but what would you choose between the 30 and 42.5?
Tough…I’d probably go the 42.5 as it’s a little more telephoto delivering a bit more bokeh 😉
@@RICH_Photography appreciate the response
I’ve jumped systems a lot. I don’t really do video, mostly stills.
such a great lens and powerful video...your family is beautiful
I wonder how its compared to leica 25mm f1.4
Dude I was gonna get the lumix, but FUUUUUCK that. I'm getting all three sigma.
The 16,the 30 and the 60.
That and the lumix 45-150 (OR whatever it is) will be my kit. I'll hang onto the 14-45 kit lens because of the OIS, but those sigma are going to cover everything I need to do. The 30 and 60 for portraits the 16 for super wide shots, the 30 for utility.
this is outstanding
Thank you so much 🙏
if i look so on the sigma lenses, i think how small have to be 500mm lens
The huge diference just exists because Lumix has at least one plastic lens inside instead of real glass, I had to do some cleaning inside because the Lumix was dusty, that's why I've came across 1 lens made of plastic!!! thanks for the video anyway! If I had seem it before buying the lumix, I would never buy it! thanks!
Thanks, man.
You're welcome!
Does it have autofocus?
I just decided to buy sigma dn art 30 mm f 2.8 instead of lumix 25 mm 1.7...1.4 is too expensive for me:)
Not interesting. Not Lumix 25/1.7, but Leica 25/1.4 !!!
The aperture number doesn't change between systems. f/1.4 is f/1.4 regardless of what it is on.
Such a lekker review thanks
You're welcome
on the comparisons something is wrong with you focus or your lens.. this blur is not normal.. it doesn't look like it's right focused..
Awesome & Thanks :)
Thanks.
Lumix/Leica 25 / f1.4 will be more interesting to compare IMHO
Whilst both will be 1.4 lenses, the pricing of the Leica 25mm 1.4 is double the Sigma.
Lumix Leica DG Summilux 25mm is superb compared to the Sigma 30mm.
It is also double the price
I think he likes the Sigma better.
Right!
@@RICH_Photography Lol, Well thank you very much. I bought the trio set of 1.4's from sigma and I couldn't be happier. Perfect pairing with the GH6.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Sold. Haha well done.
Epic!!! You’ll enjoy this lens for sure 👌
