    Nice review. What I was missing was the AF performance comparison between the two lenses - this might be important consideration factor at least from photography point of view...

      Valid point for photography, much like the Lumix 25 vs Sigma 30....the Sigma grabs focus MUCH faster than the Lumix 42.5 👌

    I have the 42.5 and will buy the Sigma 56. I have the Sigma 16mm and 30mm which are so much better than the native Panasonic m43 lenses! However I will keep the 42.5 as it has image stabilization, lens hood and macro capabilities. So having both will be nice. I did experience lens flair on the 16mm at a recent outdoor car show photoshoot on only one shot, which surprised me. But the shots were otherwise gorgeous! Thank you so much for your insights on m43! I love my G9! Keep up the great work that you do!

    Thanks. I had the Olympus 45 f/1.8 back when I had the GX85 and really liked it. Thinking about getting a G9 and interested in these Sigma lenses. Would like to see this against the Olympus 45 1.8

      I'm trying to decide between the two -- both used: the Oly is around half the price of the Sigma. That wouldn't bother me if I was sure, but trying to make a decision without being able to try the lenses is difficult. Fwiw I'm trying to take pictures at both focal lengths with my 35-100 zoom lens, to try and get a feel for which length would suit me more...

    Bought both of them.. and they are both awesome. Really appreciate you review on this. Had 42.5mm first and after watching your videos several times i need to have 56mm for my GH5ii and GF10..

    You've convinced me to just get the sigma 56mm over the Panasonic. This video plus your 30mm review basically lets me know that I should keep my Panasonic 25mm I already have, but get the 56mm for my true portrait lens... Thanks

    I just looked at this .. I have a GH5 , In the video you promised a best 4 lens for mft .. I looked for it on the channel.. I have the Sigma 16mm panny 25m and I'm now considering either the 56 or 42.5 .. I'm really interested to know what your 4 lenses were .

    The 56/1.4 was basically my third m43 lens that I bought in the beginning: PL 12-60, Oly 40-150/2.8 and the Sigma. Later came the Sigma 16/1.4, Oly 8mm/1.8 and the PL 100-400. Full blown Gas attacks, and I love it. 😇😂😂
    The only reason I didn't hit on the Sigma 30/1.4 was the old, existing Canon EF 24/1.4L, which, converted with the 0,71 speedbooster, turns this thing into a 34/1.0 bokeh monster with AFS (don't even consider AFC on converted lenses...)
    Ahhh.. love that m43 system. Can't wait for the specs of both announced WOW cams, GH6 and whatever Omd comes up with..
    👍

    As much as I like the 56 1.4, the lens flare in the sun was horrendous on it. Maybe I consistently hit the angle where the oblong flare covered the entire frame diagonally.

      I haven't noticed it much, the lens flares I've got have been pretty good. Also I do use a matte box quite often.

    It should be added the Sigma 56mm is designed for APS-C which is why it is bigger and heavier meaning carrying useless double weight and size on mft for 1/2 f-stop benefit. Regarding pricing the 42,5 has much broader availability on the market new and used so prices here are significantly lower than the sigma.

    Great review! I just got this lens and it is tack sharp! Regarding auto focus, this is my second auto focus lens so not an auot focus expert. I have my A 6500 set on Continuos AF and center spot and the lens set to Apature is slow to focus! If I aim it at a photo 12 feet away and it grabs focus, then I put my hand up 3 feet out, it won't focus on my hand unless I half press the shutter? I called B&H thinking I have a defective lens and they said that kind of auto focus where you just point the camera at something and it grabs focus when you move between near and far subjects only works in video! What say you? I thought it was supposed to quickly grab focus on photo mode as well?

    • @RICH_Photography
      @RICH_Photography  2 года назад +1

      Thank you so much!
      It is insanely sharp, even up against the Sigma 30mm f1.4 the 30mm looks faulty 🤣
      I know with the GH5 and GH6 there are different modes. There's a mode that does continuous autofocus consistently and a mode when you ONLY press the shutter.
      See if you can find it in the Sony settings.
      Personally I'd let it only focus when you half press. Otherwise your focus motor in the lens will be running consistently even when your camera is at your side focusing the ground. This just puts so much more wear and tear on your focus motor.
      Had to replace a Nikon focus motor in a lens not too long ago, not exactly a small priced job.

      And my Sony A6500 set on Continuos AF works well and correct with Sigma 60/2.8 DN.
      The camera focuses and refocuses easily when moving from one subject to another. There is no need to press the focus button halfway again.
      Robert Whitfield, in your case you may need to set the focus area "wide".

    Great comparison of pics / video so people can compare apples with apples with apples. You've removed any doubt. Nice pace of conversation too.
    And lovely whanau too (Maori ... whanau pronounced "far-no" = family)
    I have the Panasonic Leica 12mm f/1.4, Mitakon Zhiyongi Speedmaster 17mm f/0.95 (disappointing for photos but alright for video), TTartisans 23mm f/1.4 (far better sharpness than the 7 Artisans 17mm), M.Zuiko 12-40 f/2.8, M.Zuiko 42.5 f/1.8, legacy Olympus OM 100 f/2.8. While manual focus, I like the Mitakon for "talking heads" and it's bokeh - and the TTartisans has slightly less bokeh but is a LOT sharper than the Mitakon. (To be honest, the Mitakon was a real let down - despite them knowing I was buying for RUclips 'talking heads' - no amount of punching in for focus or focus peaking does any good - I'll use it with remote focus-pull for "talking heads" and basically set and forget for the vlog but I don't think I'll be buying from them again).
    But sometimes you need autofocus. And sometimes the Digital Eye IS far more accurate than the human eye. The Panasonic Leica 12mm, M.Zuiko 12-40 and the 42.5 f/1.8 are great for that. The Leica's compression is nuts! And the M.Zuiko 12-40 is so versatile and great for a "1 lens does it all" for site-seeing. But I'm a bokeh addict so ... I think the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 is being added to the kit.
    Then I just need to find a decent 300mm+ lens for my astrophotography ... there's a lot of stacking involved so the challenge is to find fast glass that doesn't weigh a tonne and with little-to-no CA ... that doesn't require me to sell my first-born! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
    Nice review - keep up the good work :)

  • @MarchalisVan
    @MarchalisVan 2 года назад +1

    The 42.5 1.7 is more of a light travel portrait lens to me. There are better pro version for professional use in the 42.5-50 ish range. The sigma is pretty solid however within it's 100-135mm equivalent range. For example, Full frame users would complain about a 85mm f3.4 equivalence not having enough isolation option, but far less so for a 112mm f2.8, as 2.8 is acceptable. But then considering the small sizes and weight, especially compared to full frame let alone the mft f1.2 versions, and.. the fact that only doing depth obliterated background portraits is lazy and boring. these lenses have their place for sure. Note however, that Full frame will have less noise at a given ISO by about 2 stops of light sometimes more if the f number is the same. These lenses can compensate for that mft sensor disadvantage by a bit within these lens sizes, as you double the f number for depth of field for full frame equivalence, but not for light hitting the sensor.

    Nice review but you still seem confused or at least quite unprecise when explaining FF equivalence. It is misleading to only use the FF equivalent aperture for DOF but not for the light transmission: "112 mm focal length with an F2.8 look DOF then 1.4 light"
    It would be F2.8 FF equivalent both in terms of DOF and light transmission.
    Referring to your previous video where you make the same mistake doesn't help you with this flawed conversion from MFT to FF lens properties. However, I don't think it is really necessary to always convert to FF when talking about MFT lenses. Maybe just do a review of the MFT lens by comparing it to other options for the same system without any conversion to FF? I think that would be sufficient for most viewers interested in the actual lens. The few people who are interested in thinking about FF equivalent lens properties can always do the conversion on their own if they want to.
