    So many shortsighted reviewers on RUclips (like Hugh Brownstone from 3 Blind Men and Ten Thousand Affiliate Links) only hype up about how amazing certain products are but they never dare to hint any kind of negative opinion at all. That type of selling might be successful for them in the short term, but it is so misleading. Thank you for NOT doing that. Appreciate that your channel values integrity and you're willing to deliver both pro's and con's. Great stuff.

      "focal length" is NOT a negative. It's"appropriate" for YOUR use or it's not. The lens has good ,quiet AF; is fast, sharp edge to edge, and 56 mm ; What's not to like?

    The Olympus 75mm f/1.8 is another great lens but also often not a very practical focal length even outdoors. When you can find a use for it, it’s fun to use and makes beautiful images. Heck, even if you don’t use it much, the lens itself is so darn pretty, you can just sit and stare at that thing and smile :-)

    • @Ildskalli
      @Ildskalli 5 лет назад +6

      It's funny how different people's perspectives can be - I just can't get used to work with an 85mm equivalent, it's too short. On the other hand, the Olympus 75mm f/1.8 is one of the very few lenses that I *really* regret selling. I bought mine for a ridiculous price ($200, with a battered E-P2 thrown in), and it was the most delicious portrait lens that I've ever owned. Worked really well for sports and action, too.

      Same here. Some of my best, most interesting shots were on the Oly 60mm f/2.8 macro used as a short telephoto lens. It's a great focal length! Waiting on my own Sigma 56/1.4 from Henry's. :)

    I get perfectly round bokeh balls out of my GH5, I love this lens. It is my go to for portraits and B Roll. It just depends on your work flow. The Pani 42.5 doesn't even compare to the sigma. It really just amounts to taking a few steps back if you can, if you like the 85mm. It just takes an adjustment. I never use in the studio for vlogging. It is totally a niche lens. If you are a portrait photographer or do head shots then this is for you.

    This would be an excellent lens for equine photography and product photography as well. With some extension tubes, I expect it could do some respectable macro (or at least close-up) work as well. I used to use my Sigma 60mm f/2.8 with extension tubes for close-ups and sold it to an eBay buyer who was looking for something to get detail shots of firearms with and he really liked it. I think the close focus distance on this one is about the same on paper although I don't know how well it works with extension tubes.

    @kaihendry 5 лет назад +1

    Love that you are recording how you take the picture at 3:00. I have a GH5 and I'm surprised to see your exposure fluctuating. Mine doesn't do that. Am I missing a trick? I think if you did a series of videos showing how to operate the camera for video and stills using that POV, it would be awesome for newbs like myself.

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 лет назад +3

      Thanks, Kai! Some cameras will momentarily change the exposure, often by changing the aperture, just to acquire focus. In that sample, on the G9, when you switch between the zoomed-in focus checker and then focus with pinpoint it flashes a brighter exposure to make sure everything is sharp, then it switches back to the exposure you dialed in for taking the picture.

  • @dajael
    @dajael 5 лет назад +4

    Omg!!! The blades on that lens look like a weapon in Mad Max! I’m assuming you used all of the Harry Potter features of the lumix to pull off the badass focus and self timer shots? What impresses me most is around 4min. You pull in tight on the bokeh balls of light and the clarity of your hair strands in that image is impressive! I’m wondering how much post tweakiness was in that image?

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 лет назад +1

      The ones that you're seeing in Lightroom are mostly unedited. Probably just a little exposure and white balance adjustment. The lens is very good for detail and sharpness though as you pointed out with the hair strands.

  • @DRGIZMO29

    Hey gerald I'm wondering if you have any plan to review the budget side of MFT lens? Such as olympus 40-150mm f4-5.6, panasonic lumix with the similar focal length, the 7artisans and the meike lineups. I'd love to see it because another reviewers for budget lenses are not that good of a video quality..

  • @CaseyHardman
    @CaseyHardman 5 лет назад +5

    I swear you're one of very few who reviewed this lens on MFT, so thank you! lol Disregarding the fact that Panasonic's autofocusing is terrible to begin with, this actually looked pretty nice. It's not the fastest for video work, but it looks smooth and seems to be pretty accurate. I can't say I agree with your negative feelings toward the focal length, because you know what it's going to be when you buy it, so obviously it's for a specific look. For someone like me who has the Viltrox EF-M2 and the Sigma 18-35 with my G85, which ends up being around 26-50mm (FF equivalent), getting a 42.5mm isn't enough of a difference in focal length to be worth it personally. Yes, 112mm is a bit odd compared to the standard 85mm for portrait work, but I still think it's a compelling lens considering the sharpness, f/1.4, and even the price.

    Question though, I just noticed that my JPEG max L size drops to 10m when I put this lens on my A7iii....I’m confused?? Can you clarify for me?
    Thanks!
    Adam

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 лет назад +1

      It's probably because it's a crop lens. Your a7 III is full frame, but this lens was designed for the crop cameras like a6500, so you can only use the cropped portion of your sensor, thus the loss in resolution.

    • @healing2gether
      @healing2gether 5 лет назад +1

    I'm anxiously waiting for my pre-order to ship from Henry's. For myself, I think it'll make an absolutely fantastic indoor sports lens.
    The problem on m43 is getting that shutter speed down in low light situations. I have the 35-100mm f/2.8, which is beautifully sharp, but still too damned slow! I've taken it out to the climbing gym to get some nice action shots, and ended up at ISO3200, which is pretty lousy on the g85.
    I'm also looking at the Samyang 135mm f/2.0 for the same reason; the 100-300mm f/4-5.6 is wonderful outdoors, but pretty much useless indoors.
    Anyway, great vid as always!

      @@Wristworm Sorry, didn't see this reply! I've used it a ton both indoors and out, and it's epic. In fact I just finished shooting a couple music videos which used it heavily. Its autofocus on the G9 was decent enough (no follow focus on my gimbal, sadly).

    I picked up the Olympus 75mm f1.8 a while back and have been learning the art of portraits and if you have the space and a willing subject and reasonable background, it does a spectacular job, super natural and attractive looking (even taking photos of guys!). On the other hand, it tests the IBIS when it's dim and the IBIS does nothing for moving targets anyway, and you do have to be somewhat far away, maybe 3 or 4m /10-12ft or so. So I guess this would bring that down to about 2/3 of those distances or a bit higher which would be very helpful. And flipping back again, the 75mm allowed me to take candid photos because I was far enough away that people weren't aware I was doing it and some of those were GREAT :-) In other news Olympus 45mm f1.8 is on the way in the same box that my Sigma 16mm is in. Looking forward to both of those! :-)

      I can tell you right now that the Leica would win in terms of weather sealing if you just got them wetter and wetter until they were ruined, but that would be kind of stupid! The Sigma would win on sharpness. It is the sharpest lens for micro four thirds and it is sharp edge-to-edge wide open. The Leica is sharp in the center wide open, but the corners are soft until you stop it down a bit, which is why I don't own one. If I have to stop it down to at least f/1.7 to get sharp corners, I might as well just use the Lumix 42.5mm f/1.7 which is much smaller with an excellent close focus distance.

      @helpsloan 5 лет назад

      Wait so I watched your video on the relationships between lens focal lengths and sensors but I am a little confused. Why is a 56mm lens 112mm on full frame? Is it a crop lens? Wouldn't it be 56mm on full frame and with that micro 4/3rd's sensor on your gh5 it would become 112mm because of 2.0 crop factor? That would make it 56mm on full frame and 112mm on your crop sensor right?

    • @marcus3d
      @marcus3d 5 лет назад

      @@helpsloan Right. The 56mm on the MFT body has a field of view equivalent to a 112mm on a FF body. So on MFT a 56mm F1.4 is said to be a 112mm F2.8 equivalent, since that's what you'd use on FF to get the same picture. (And the last factor, besides focal length and F-number, is the ISO: A MFT sensor at ISO 200 is "equivalent" to ISO 800 on FF.)

    Undone man. Bus driver. Good stuff. I am interested in renting this lens to test because I do miss the convenience of auto focus. My current portrait lens for m4/3 is a 1980's era Olympus Zuiko manual focus 50/1.8 which I bought for $35 US dollars to mount on a Pansonic GM5 & Olympus EPL-1. I'm old school and still order prints from 8x10 up to 20x30 posters. The final print and not the monitor zoomed at 100% will be the judge of the $445 dollar difference.

    Man seeing this lens on the G9 reminded me a lot of when I shot with my D600 + 50 1.8. Looks great, just.. tight.
    Maybe some day.. probably not. I just prefer shooting in the 40-60 equivalent range to get some more context into portraits, not much of a headshot person.
    Hope Sigma brings us a low profile 40 equiv sometime (Fuji X or MFT) - they make great glass and fill a niche in the market, but their current size queen 40 1.4 and 50 1.4 aren't anything I'd want to lug around.
    Is there any 40 you think is worth buying for MFT that could be made use of for portraits? Haven't heard much on the Panasonic 20 1.7 and f3.4 might be just a little too deep a DoF for what I'd optimally want (although I guess I shoot with 4.2 equivalent right now on the Fuji pancake..).

    An immediate ‘niche’ application for this lens on m43 camera bodies is in low light grungy live music. F/2.8 just doesn’t cut at these venues especially if the performers are hyper active and the camera is m43. You need all the help you can get. So portrait, live indoor entertainment an indoor sport turns the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 into a more versatile lens than just a mere niche lens.For an old pro in his 8th decade trying to cut back on weight and size I have to admit I was surprised at its small form factor, very cute indeed.

      I had the same question and went with the Sigma 56mm. Most of the reviews online mentioned that the Sigma 56mm is sharper around the corners than the 75mm, whilst the middle is about equal. Would be great if there is a video comparing these bokeh masters.

    The niche for this lens I see is indoor sports. Basketball and volleyball with their notoriously crapping lighting would benefit from the large aperture and focal length.

    • @chosenideahandle
      @chosenideahandle 4 года назад

      Sports (indoor of otherwise) really demands focal lengths 200mm and beyond, unless you plan on sticking yourself where you shouldn't be. It's of course super expensive to get something like that in a large aperture.

    I keep revisiting this lens. This time because the Sigma 85 Art with Viltrox adapter on the Pocket 4k doesn't have peaking, and it's enormous. I'm not even going to try that combo for photos on the GH5 II. Although the 35-100 is fantastic, this could do well as a lens for covering keynotes and wedding toasts, whether video or photo.

    I use this with the 30mm 1.4 when doing street walks. I'm an introvert, I enjoy talking to people, but in person doing something like raising a camera at someone within a wide-angle range isn't very comfortable. It may help that I'm used to the Pentax 40mm and 70mm on an APS-C crop body which comes out to 60mm and 105mm equivalent on something like the Pentax KP. Going over to an equivalent of 60mm and 112mm wasn't much of a change for me, but if I'm being honest, I shoot a lot with a Pana Leica 12-60 2.8-4 unless I really need the faster lenses for low light or subject separation (f4 on a ~50 or 60mm focal length gives fairly good separation, but it's obviously not going to beat f1.4).

    For portraits, or inside for you tube video head shots, I like the Panasonic 25mm and the 42.5mm. That's nifty 50 and 85mm equivalent. with f1.7. For those of us on a budget, the 2 lenses together were less than $500. These 2 lenses plus the kit lens (14-42mm) take care of my basic needs in my office/studio. I also have a few vintage Canon FD lenses that I use with a speed booster. They're fun to use, but let's just say they probably are not appropriate for serious photography.
