  • Unboxing and initial review of the Spyderco ARK compared to the CRKT Minimalist neck knives for EDC. Both great little knives, the biggest difference is steel quality which is reflected in the pricing.

    I've had the crkt for 2 yrs and have skinned and processed just 3 deer this yr. And it definitely won't rust if u wash it keep it dry and put a little oil layer on it if ur outside for a few days camping etc.

    I use 3 in 1 oil when sharpening, and leave a light film on the blade. This helps control oxidation.

    Great review of both the knives I’m interested in. Quick and to the point. Good job sir... think I’m going with the ARK, because of the steel. Thanks buddy

    Just a couple of comments: I have owned the CRKT for about 3 years. Love it, but the knife has fallen out of the sheath a couple of times. Wish it had better retention. The kneck cord is true paracord. You will know when you cut a piece off of the end. If you do, just melt the internal strands with a lighter and tamp it down. I too just received my ARC. Great knife, but chain is way too short to reach up from the bottom of your shirt, so I now use the CRKT cord for the ARC. I now use the included cross-draw belt clip for my CRKT. Works out great. Now I carry both, along with my pocket EDC. Carrying 3 knives and don't even notice that they exist, until I need one. Also, you can order a titanium stainless 3mm x 38 inch long ball chain from Amazon for $10. Today I ordered a black one one. I'll try that out next week. BTW: The ARK is full tang, with FRN molded directly onto the tang. Lastly: No rust issues with my Minimalist. Rinse, dry, and rub on a bit of oil. I use RustFree, from A.G. Russell Knives. A little goes a long way. Good stuff and food grade. Thank you for your review.

    Surprised about the corrosion. 5cr is super stainless, but it is really soft which has been the deterrent for me with this knife. There is a d2 tan micarta smkw exclusive right now that im gonna grab. Gonna have to keep the d2 oiled though. The H1 steel on the arc is totally stainless, but other performance is lacking for the price. I guess it was designed for soldiers to protect from shower assault in Afghanistan which explains a lot. Great video!

    Surprised to see the CRKT rusting. It is 5cr15mov, which having 15% Chromium is technically a stainless steel, though H1 is much more stainless.

      I found that even just lightly polishing bead blasted blades with Flitz remedies a lot of the inherent rust issues. What do you do with you blades?

    I love the design of the CRKT Alan Folts Minimalists. I just wish CRKT made them with a good corrosion resistant steel. I would instantly buy one if it was Lc200n, m390, n690, vanax, elmax, etc, or any reasonably corrosion resistant steel.

    both seem good.
    Might be one of those things where you just kinda need to have both lol.
    The lock on the spyderco seems like a very nice feature, lets you know its not going anywhere by mistake.
    you would also think the minimalist would release in a better steel considering allot like the knife design.

    Been carrying my minimalist nearly every day for 3 years and my only complaint is the steel, I have to sharpen it nearly every week, haven't had any problems with rust though. Good video, exactly what I was looking for, however still on the fence about the spyderco.

    By modding the nylon cord.. you’ve now made it a choking hazard…. The plastic part besides making it adjustable was also a break away link… I agree the CKRT blade material is junk.. If they used a decent steel I’d buy one in a heartbeat.

    Thanks for the review.
    I wear a neck knife all the time and only take off for showering. Currently use a CRKT Spew. Happy with it except the rusting due to sweat. I clean it frequently, mostly after exercising and lube it but still it rusts a bit. Problem also is that it has a 2 piece G10 scales and the tang would rust between the scales and I would need to disassemble often to clean.
    Then ARK knife seems to have a one piece design handle so probably that is not a problem. How is it handling the rusting so far after a few months?

    • @SouthernShodan
      @SouthernShodan 2 года назад +1

      Great point about the scales with the CRKT. I didn't think of needing to disassemble those every so often in addition to keeping the blade clean and oiled. The one piece H1 of the Spyderco seems to be the easier solution

    • @mannyaguilar67
      @mannyaguilar67 2 года назад

      @@SouthernShodan I concur. I switched to the Spyderco a while ago and even though I liked the shape and form of the CRKT, I have not had rust issues with the Spyderco probably because of the H1 steel.

      I just ordered the ARK yesterday. I've been carrying the Spyderco Dragonfly 2 for about a year now as a neck knife in a Kydex sheath that allows the knife to be carried folded and you just pull it out. The H1 does not rust. I wear it 24/7 and don't dry it off after a shower. NO rust ever. Summer time sweating, no issues at all. It keeps sharp long enough in my opinion and it sharpens fast. After about 3 sharpenings all at the same angle, the blade holds up even longer than the original. It's not just me saying that, others have tested and showed that.

    The nylon cord may present problems, I hear, if it gets caught on something. The better steel in the Spyderco settles the argument, no question. Nice video. Hope to see more soon.

      Also the CRKT is only 20 bucks at walmart. I'm not sure how much the spiderco is but I know I would be sad losing a spiderco, not so much a cheap CRKT.
