      You're not thinking of how to use a OTF in that situation correctly in respects to using it's sound as a teterrent. I carried one as my work knife as an EMT... in Detroit, I'd keep it tuned so it sounded as much like a firearm cambering a round as possible. If a situation was Sketchy like no PD on scene (SUPER commone in Kwami's Detroit), and questionable people on the street, before I took the stretcher out I'd put my foot up on the bumper, with my back to them let the thing rip open, then point it at the ground while cocking it a manner that looks like you're again cycling a round to the chamber, tuck it back into the lowest pocket and fix my boot. Peoples attitudes would shift walking to the back of the truck they'd look like, is this prey, and when I'd look back after messing with that knife, it was a look like, "Nah it's not worth it, to mess with that guy."
      ...Violence Perceived is Violence Achieved...

    If there’s really rioting in the streets, nobody’s going nowhere. Even with a firearm, it will be dangerous and likely not worth the attempt. I agree with Tim and you best bugin until you have a clear way to get off the X.

      I'd go as far as saying most situations(Riots/civil unrest severe weather active shooter) the safest thing to do is shelter in place at your place of work or a safe building(I just assume worst case scenario when something happens ie an environment where you're most likely having to stow a firearm or any major weapon in your car safe as the building you're in prohibits them). I am a huge proponent of keeping a set of "Motel Keys" in a Bugout bag, they temporarily disable a lock, allowing you do hide or rest securely until the situation has resolved it self or has gotten to a point where travel is a safe option.

    I live in Santa Rosa Ca- that being said, I was home, asleep next to my son when the Tubbs Fire broke out and I was evacuated at 3:30 AM telling me to “get out and leave the valuables alone and just leave as fast as possible.” This was one of my first experiences with a red alert, Evac warning, with “no patrol” warning- this means that they expect you to be gone, and to not endanger yourself by staying in unsafe place- my home was deemed unsafe, and was being pillaged by thieves that were “looting” the evacuated homes. Signs were up on doorknobs “you loot, we shoot!” And it felt like it was only a message left by those who were obviously gone and it was clearly stamped on the door. I had been in situations before where I had to call the police, and even then when there’s any emergency in an un-evacuated area, it takes about 10 minutes for anyone to get there- this situation was completely different and it was a “no police area.” The streets were covered and it was impossible to drive out unless you were waiting in line and it stayed black as night for days and days with no power (burned) and no police (they were all busy and not able to respond to the high amount of calls) and it was “bugout/SHTF” situation. I was relieved to already have a bag made, and I was worried that the fire would spread to my safe locations all the way across the bay area. Not only is it smart to consider anything, I feel like it is now naïve to think that something crazy couldn’t happen to me and my son. My love of folders had my bag already packed with a few really good plates, and some good medical kits for me and my son, and all of the things that I thought that I had been caring around for no reason we’re automatically some of the most valuable things I could have on me and wouldn’t be able to buy right away. It never hurts to be too prepared. It can hurt when you are under prepared. There should always be a good bag prepped, and ready to grab within seconds. I had to leave my place with my socks off and with what I could grab- it pays to have a bugout bag ready. You owe it to yourself, and to your family in my opinion!! In a bad situation, we need the good guys happy and healthy with the rest of us and we don’t want to become the target while being unprepared. Love the adamus- same SNG vibe or Medford vibe - nice choice. And the can trick was new for me and I thought I watched them all after being a traveller for years and hitting the road for almost 6 years straight and living out of tents with friends. My son’s mom can open a Can with her bare hands and a rock and I start to feel a little less survival-ready when I’m digging around for a p-38 military opener lol. Zac always has the best tips and I think he’s a dad too - I get that “protector of my kin” vibe from him and that “ready for anything” attitude. Zac, you rolled around Vegas in the same way I did along the Ca coast (hitching /traveling). Would love to hear about some of the ways that you used your knives for traveling, because Lord knows I have wild stories about how the sound of a well - flipped knife was able to clear back a couple steps for my son’s mother when she was getting harassed by three guys in the park after dark. I heard her scream and came running and the first thing I did was slam out the knife and scream as loud as I could - THEY BOLTEDDD when they saw how much I cared about it, and the jump back when I deployed the knife was a sure sign of defense in itself. Zac is exactly right that the sound something makes can have a huge role in a “oh shit” situation where you may need to defend yourself and you want that extra “don’t do it” sound to your tools!! Best video in a long time. Great choices you guys. Zac’s a champ and I can’t get enough Zac picks and useful tips - please keep em comin!

    • @dark_gravity_edc
      @dark_gravity_edc 5 лет назад +15

      I agree an OTF is not what I'd choose. I carried an AFO and auto Styker in Iraq and Afghanistan. Never had a problem and used it a thousand times more than a fixed blade.
      The spirit behind the video is EDC that can help. Most US cities you're going to jail if you have a fixed blade or it's just not practical. I personally carry a Guardian 3 and my AFO, but I live in the south where I don't have to worry about cops. The Guardian is not an ideal survival knife but it's light weight and comfortable. I have a few "survival" knives. They're fine once shit goes sideways, but annoying everyday as a civilian.

      @Griztophe LeBaire I agree. I'd tell everyone to carry a fixed blade, a folder and a gun whether it's legal or not myself. I don't have a RUclips channel though. That was my original point. They were just making suggestions and the comment about autos is not based in fact. It's an opinion. Autos are fine for EDC and can be used for survival. All that happens when the spring breaks is it becomes a button lock knife. Not much different from any other locking folder.

    • @loamy4743
      @loamy4743 5 лет назад +6

      I always heard that a shotgun was the best weapon to have in that situation but not because of the sound. I've always understood that a shotgun with buckshot or birdshot minimizes collateral damage because the pellets often won't make it through a wall if you do need to shoot like bullets from a handgun or rifle might, minimizing the risk of hitting an unintended target.

    • @RealtorDanHayden
      @RealtorDanHayden 5 лет назад +1

      loamy47 it all depends on your specific situation.

    • @JaronActual
      @JaronActual 5 лет назад +6

      @@loamy4743 Buckshot, particularly the larger pellets, will easily make it through multiple walls. A typical 12ga 00 buck shell is nine pellets, each .33 cal and ~55gr, moving ~1200 fps. That's about the same as a hot .32 ACP load out of a +5" barrel. And you're firing nine of them.
      Smaller pellets have less mass, thus less inertia. They can be deflected and stopped much easier by sheet rock and other materials in your walls. That said, #4 buck and #6 birdshot will still go through a wall or two. Part of this is because shotgun patterns don't spread near as fast as a lot of people think. At 10 feet, the pattern will be a couple inches across at most. So even if the first pellets don't go through the wall, they will weaken it, making it easier for the following pellets to break through.

All those things can be carried on my person and don't require me to carry a bag with me. A go bag can be in your car, or at your desk at work, whatever. I carry a gerber lmf II because of the insulated handle and serrations to cut the many different types of material you find in an urban setting and if I am in a subway car I can smash the safety glass with the end of this knife. Also I carry a Schrade SCAX5 tactical axe, Leatherman Surge, True nite headlamp and a heavy duty firefighters bail out kit. I can easily stash this gear, Geo tag it and retrieve it at a later date when things get better

    I live in a smaller town, but the county I am in has very small towns spread wide out. and most times you are going from town to town to get to services you need every month. it is not uncommon to have a tree fall across the road, have the mountain fall on the road, or the road fall off of the mountain. I built a 72 hour get home/survival bag into the back of my wheelchair. I made a video on my channel about the gear I put on my chair, and I have actually had to stay out overnight with nothing but my chair gear on two occasions. planning to do a video on that in July. also, I am glad to see bigger channels recommending a silcock key. I have carried one of those every since I was in the ARMY in 85-94

    Great video but the knives you chose are literally the two worst folders you could actually have.
    1. Benchmade has a stupid lock which WILL break after some time and when it happens the knife will become useless.
    2. The OTF is really a bad choice because it's too complex, it can break which makes it useless as well and you can't open it discreetly.
    Benchmade folders and OTFs are for show, if you want a knife that you can actually rely on go for maybe a Spyderco or Cold Steel.

    Personal opinion here but for an (urban) survival knife, whether you go folder or fixed, I’d opt for a softer steel. Supersteels are attractive sure, edge holding is great for an edc but in a survival situation easy sharpening > longer edge holding. The thing is, most “accidents” with your blade that dull the edge on a softer steel will more than likely damage your supersteel too. Hitting rock, absolutely having to use your blade for prying etc. Being able to sharpen your blade on the bottom of a mug or smooth brick takes priority over a long term edge holding abilty imo.

    • @BladeHQ
      @BladeHQ  5 лет назад +3

      Another great option just depends on where you live. I have primarily lived in very dry desert areas so finding a pool of water that is not chlorinated in an urban environment would be more of a challenge then finding a spigot. However I lived in Florida for a while and would probably trade the key for a water filter there. -Zac

    Always have a go bag in my truck with extra magazines and ammo a medical kit and warm snow clothes being im in Colorado besides that I always have my pistol and a pocket knife but in my bag I have a survival knife and random food or snacks a few water bottles and jugs of water and of course fire starting tools. The tool box of my truck I have basic mechanics tools and fluids in case of a break down and a machete and hatchet plus a good pair of boots and jacket at all times stays in the back seat and in the tool box don’t even notice it but if I need it I have it

      You're missing a key word. URBAN survival. If I'm stuck in the forest, obviously I don't want my Ultratech. But in an urban situation, the glass breaker is very valuable, its likely going to be used for some sort of defense so a dagger blade comes in handy, and the visual deterrent factor of an OTF is very useful. Keep a bigger fixed blade in your car or a small one as a neck knife, but that OTF can really come in handy.

    • @Bolfiik
      @Bolfiik 5 лет назад +1

      @@ezraveno558 lol, Well every other pocket knife w/ glassbreaker Is better choice , also OTF needs more maintenence and cleaning than any other type of pocket knife. And to be fair I would be more scared of Adamas , or lets say it in better way , I would be scared of every knife. Also unless you're John Wick or any other godly skilled assasin any other blade with good grip and sharp point will do the job. You're gonna be lucky to even survive one knife attack/Fight.

    I would say Lockpicks, a city rake and a short/small hook plus one or two tension wenches and padlock shims including a combination lock shim. I may have missed it but, also needles and thread for when you need to suture wounds.

    • @zBMatt
      @zBMatt 5 лет назад

      Francisco Pacheco with a pry bar you need none of those. Lockpicks are really only useful when you have the time to pick, and want the lock to stay intact. In shtf locks being intact are the least of your problems.

    • @zBMatt
      @zBMatt 5 лет назад

      Francisco Pacheco if by some chance you really do need to lockpick however, stick with a pick gun. It’s faster and if it breaks you get the lockpick from it anyways.

      Thanks for the feedback. I would agree 100% that if you pull out a weapon you need to be ready to use that weapon. My intention here was to highlight that the act of getting ready to defend yourself could potentially be the thing that deescalates an aggressors intention. Hope that helps clarify a bit. -Zac
