Culture Club and Boy George were really popular in the 80's, i mean really really HUGE, i don't think he's or was underrated at all. Even Madonna who is still very popular today and continues to release new albums, she is no longer that huge star she was in the past.
Let’s face it...that whole Colour By Numbers album is a plea to Jon Moss...But Damn, a dude pleading to another dude to love him is so relatable and made the album good! Hell I’ve been there too...And it hurts like a mofo’r.
This particular song would have without question broken the black demographic markets in two. I remember driving through Downtown Detroit at the time when I came to realized that one of my white girlfriends had left a Culture Club tape behind; I was about to through it out of the window when something told me to insert it, and bypass all the mainstream bubble-gum Culture Club crap that was dominating most white radio stations nationwide. I remember that day as if it were yesterday-- although it happened several decades ago. I clicked through all the bubble-gum shit until I hit the B-Side, and heard what I thought was Smokey Robinson on a Culture Club album; but it wasn’t Smokey-- it was Boy George himself….WOW, I Knew then that there was a lot more to Boy George than Boy George from Culture Club. Later that night I stopped over by WGPR Radio station/studios a few minutes before 12:00 midnight when The Electrifying MOJO (Charles Johnson) would take over the airwaves of Detroit, and asked him if he had heard 'Black Money' by Culture Club to which he responded by saying “fuck no, I don’t listen to that over the pound mainstream bullshit.” Now, anyone who knew MOJO also would know that right before he began his midnight broadcasts he would like to smoke some good weed and enjoy a sip or two of Hennessy. Knowing this I brought both of the two with me as a possible bribe if needed. As I presented him with the weed and the Hennessy, as a gesture of his consideration, and my gratitude of appreciation he reluctantly agreed to listen to the Black Money, but only over his headphones. To my shock he dismay he abruptly stopped the song halfway through, and said “nigga, why haven’t you turned me on to this shit before tonight? I cautiously responded by stating “because just by the stroke of pure luck one of my female friends left the cassette in my car, and I just happened to play the B-Side out of curiosity." MOJO looked at me with what were quickly becoming bloodshot eyes and said “fuck it, I don’t care what the station manger or station owners have to says; I’m playing this shit here all night long." MOJO was a contracted DJ whose contract clause allowed him to play whatever he wanted, and that night-- back, to back, to back-- he played solely Black Money for five to six hours without pause. The very next day Black Money By Culture Club was number one on all Detroit, and Chicago urban stations. Boy George was really a Soul Singer hidden inside a pop-star and unfortunately marketed to be only that. Records labels often get it wrong, and it becomes a tragedy for not only us the listening audience, but also a tragedy for the artists who suffer alone having being forced to be what they are not. And, RIP George Michael-- you too were a Soul Singer from across the pound who just happened to be white, and under valued merely for being of your particular racial sort.
LEGACY .... I'm a native Detroiter.. I was a teenager in the early 80s...WGPR was the station I would listen to...We use to blast this track at the Giant Slide on bell isle... That was my summer job... Great story bro
When I was young 15-16 years old I was obsessed with culture club. From knowing every song on the album to posters that hung all over my walls. But no one could have prepared me for this, I am now a mother of two girls. When is 18 and one is 17 years old and they love culture club just as much as I did when I was 15 or 16 years old. Just stand and watch them sometime rock out to culture club is like looking at my own self reincarnated. Thank you Culture Club for blessing my generation with your beautiful vocals and also thank you for blessing my children’s generation again with your beautiful vocals. Your music will never die. I tip my head in respect to you.
Supposedly "Black Money" is the money you spend on a man/woman, who doesn't love you in return. So I guess that's why, you've got money to burn. Love this song though. Don't care about the meaning for real. Just love the vocals.
My sister and I saw Boy George and Culture Club at The Great New York State Fair in 2016. She died 4 months later 😭😭 She was such a big fan of the group, I am so glad that she had the chance to see them live...
Wow! This is of course another old, classical masterpiece. Boy George and Helen Terry are just awesome!! Helen's vocals are truly touched with that soulful, southern gospel twist. What a magnificent song. So sad that I can say that I never heard it played on mainstream radio.
Ann, living in NY, during the mid 80's, I can say this song played quite a bit on the radio. There are still a few stations outside of major metro areas that play it once in a blue moon. This is a hauntingly beautiful ballad from George and Helen. I still have it.
This song was life lesson to me especially when I was going through my first breakup with my ex girlfriend knowing that she used me and there was someone else better out there for me
Thanks mate, ill try to find the storytellers description but after reading the lyrics over and over :) i think you are right. I try to over complicate this song i guess hehe. Cheers.
Boy George was a better vocalist than he ever got credit for. The way he dressed and the fact that he's gay always over shadowed his music. That's really a shame.
I respect every one of the artists of culture club Mr Boy George Mr mickey as the Hottest black dude still to this day if your of that age from the 80 s Miss Helen who we all loved for her magnificent voice and contribution to culture club Mr John Moss and the Blond Haired dude i thank them for the Lgbt Community Here in AC N J Thank you you broke barriers for all of us and thats why we love and respect all of you guys 4 eva
Fucked up when you love someone and they don't love you in return. I guess I got money to burn. Too bad it's COMMUNITY property. 🙄 Pray for me, Y'all. 🤧
The one thing I love about great music is that it transcends Race..Gender..Sexual Preference..Religious Beliefs..Political Beliefs..Who You Are..Where You Live..or What Country You live in..Good music brings us all together
I believe it means when people chase after money thinking it's going to fill a void inside of them that being in love with somebody who doesn't reciprocate their emotions.
Could be, he say deal in black money. I see it like "are you gonna brake my hart" thing but I'm sure "black money" is some kind of UK slang that i don't understand. When you don't get love in return you got money to burn. Do you deal in black money. So them black money are the broken hart one??? Just wild guess.
Thanks for doing these videos I loved Boy George for his music only but one of those songs sounded like do you deal with black money instead of what the title said because their was no video for it but oh well I loved these songs by Boy George.
Total and utter class song, and Helen Terry's vocals are just dynamite. Will love this song forever.
This song brings so many memories back for me seen Culture Club many times when I was a teenager and Helen Terry was amazing live
I don't recall them playing this on the radio!!! This a awesome Culture Club song, if you give this a down thumb, your soul is truly numb!!! 😔😔😔
At that time his identity wasn't recognized we came so far since then
His voice is so beautiful.❤️❤️❤️
Culture club best album color by numbers
One of the BEST albums of the 80's!!!!
This has ALWAYS been my FAVORITE Culture Club song. LOVE it!
Do you deal in black money
Do you deal in black money (do you deal, yeah)
Do you deal in black money
Do you deal in black money (do you deal, wo-oah yeah)
Fortunes find you
Cross out every emotion
Standing right behind
A shadow of devotion
Somebody else's life
Cannot be mine
But when you love someone
And they don't love you in return
When you love someone
You've got money to burn
Do you deal in black money
Do you deal in black money (do you deal, yeah)
Do you deal in black money
Do you deal in black money (do you deal, wooah)
I believe that
Nothing could come between us
Magic potions
Won't you save them for dreamers
Somebody else's life cannot be mine
But when you love someone
And they don't love you in return
When you love someone
You've got momey to burn
Do you deal in black money
Do you deal in black money (do you deal, yeah)
Do you deal in black money
Do you deal in black money (do you deal, woah woah, yeah)
Give me some love
But don't waste my time
(Wooah, black money, yeah!)
I'll love you again
But you must be mine
Oh, black money, yeah (Ah, ha ha! money, yeah)
Give me some love
But don't waste my time
(Wooah, black money, yeah!)
But when you love someone
And they don't love you in return
When you love someone
You've got money to burn
Do you deal in black money
Do you deal in black money (do you deal it, anytime?)
Fortunes find you
Cross out every emotion
Standing right behind
A shadow of devotion
Somebody else's life
Cannot be mine
But when you love someone
And they don't love you in return
When you love someone
You've got money to burn
Do you deal in black money
Do you deal in black money (do you deal, yeah)
Do you deal in black money
Do you deal in black money (do you deal, wo-oah yeah)
Give me some love
But don't waste my time
(Wooah, black money, yeah!)
I'll love you again
But you must be mine
Oh, black money, yeah (Ah, ha ha! Black money, yeah)
Give me some love
But don't waste my time
(Wooah, black money, yeah!)
Don't waste my time
Oh, yeah
Black money (Black money!)
Oooh, black money, oh (Black money!)
(Black money, yeah!)
(Black money, yeah!)
(Black money, yeah!)
(Black money, yeah!)
(Black money, yeah!)
(Black money, yeah!)
(Black money, yeah!)

Boy George is so UNDERRATED,he's an AMAZING singer so Soulful and so COOL...

Boy George and George Michael most beautiful voices 🎶💓
Underrated?? He sold millions of records.

I really love Boy George's voice in this period... so beautiful...
When I was young 15-16 years old I was obsessed with culture club. From knowing every song on the album to posters that hung all over my walls. + Brenda Thompson I love this song and the way you have to understand the meaning metaphorically. Sade rights sings like this too.
"The boy was way ahead of his time."

+Ann Jones Always wanted to know who was singing background vocal. Very talented.
+Theodore Pendergrass Yes, she's awesome.
Ann Jones I glad u posted it. For years I been wondering. I pull up the video and saw it live, she was in it, amazing.
Ann, living in NY, during the mid 80's, I can say this song played quite a bit on the radio. There are still a few stations outside of major metro areas that play it once in a blue moon. This is a hauntingly beautiful ballad from George and Helen. I still have it.
Ann Jones I totally agree, An old school track like this should be played on the radio and would've been a number one hit for Culture Club.
