@@CradaOC She’s only worth £7 million (mm) today and when this aired she was probably worth £3.5 mm. A £150,000 investment is a MASSIVE investment at £3.5 mm net worth. If you’re Peter (£1.1 bn net today probably .5 that when aired) or Theo (£289 mm) you can take a punt, put in resources, and even if their investment goes belly up it’s a palatable loss that could be tax deductible.

The pitch from the dragons about how successful they are was cringey, vague and dumb lol. If someone entrepreneur came on the show and said that sort of drivel, they’d get grilled.

@X2 JoelMK 33 so educated guess, this was filmed in 2005. So whilst yes we might speculate Peter Jones might know Mobile data, its still something in the future for him, and the customers.
depends, it was long before good, cheap mobile data. And local wifi can be cheaper and more convenient.

To be fair when I was on a boat the signal is very hit and miss, having wifi on board is a must but there's so many providers nowadays

I can be wrong but 40% just seems too greedy. Just saying. They are sitting on a big piles of money and they risk is very small, because they have diversified tons of investments across multiple successful businesses, while the guy is loosing everything if the venture fails.

Yes. Starlink giving boat owners and also owners of land based leisure vehicles (especially in the USA) access to the internet from almost any location in the World, Including whilst at sea. Dominic's business at the time of his appearance in the Den was certainly not a bad one, but it does go to show how technological advancements in this area can quickly make businesses obsolete.

to make profit in the 10 or so years before 3g came along, and to stop anyone else getting in there? Even with 3G, local wifi is probably going to be much cheaper anyway.

Rather the opposite. 4G doesnt exist at sea, not properly and there is an EXTREMELY expensive version put forward that noone uses.
