      Beautiful scenery and great attitudes. You and Torry gel so well. I felt for Buck having to cross the freezing water, he needed treats for not complaining and for completing those awful tasks. I hope his limping isn't anything serious - no back injury or hip injury or torn foot pads.
      Question: why could you not stay over one day at the cabin as to dry out your blisters, dry all gear and clothing and just rest up? Thanks for sharing and looking forward to the next trip. Hugs to all 3 of you.

    I can commiserate with you and those ridiculously heavy packs: when I thru-hiked the Applachian Trail(in the USA) in 1998, my starting pack weighed 70 pounds. I weighed over 330 pounds. When I finished, my pack weighed less than 30 pounds and I weighed 196 pounds. What views, what adversity you three overcame, what memories you formed..an epic adventure as always. I love this channel.

    Not sure if its true or not for sore blistering feet but...I use cayenne pepper for wounds. Try after a long trek to add cayenne pepper and coconut oil packed on blisters for a time. Put cayenne pepper in socks to keep feet warm. Cayenne peper is also an old remedy for joint pain and has anti-inflammatory properties. Not heavy to haul around either;)

    I really dig your channel and especially the canoe trip videos. But I cringed when I saw those packs. 65 and 55lbs. Brutal. I truly believe in the mantra "hike your own hike" and if bringing all that stuff makes your trip more enjoyable then power to you. I believe in the idea that you either pack for the hiking or you pack for the camping. These days, I pack for the hiking. Epic trip!

    Compared to you and Tori, my honey and I are rank amateurs. Do have a suggestion, however. Help each other load and unload your packs. Helps prevent twinges in shoulders, hips, and spine. Also relieves strain on the stitching of the straps, which increases their lifespan.

Even buck looked kinda teetered out by the time you finished. As fas as the blisters, i can’t figure out why somebody doesn’t make a hiking boot that has a soft, porous, thick, foam lining in the heel ?!?!? It would save a lot of pain and misery. As always thanks TO BOTH OF YOU.

    Congratulations on a really good hike. Couple of things that might help, if you get new boots, take a couple short hikes to get acquainted and make sure they fit and operate well. Foot beds really help. It looks like you had a really good blister kit. A good way to protect your feet is to get some calf high or knee high women's nylons, then put your socks over them. They will stay tight to your skin, the boots and socks will ride up and down and rub on them, not your foot. Nice video and beautiful scenery.

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  Год назад +1

      Good tips, I could have broken them in more but did a half decent job at doing so with the time I had. I think the blisters came because the boots are about a half size too big.

    Great video, but you should have included a few scenes of the wonderful uphill ridge location of Grande Cache with a gorgeous view to the west. Suggest that you keep your well-conditioned hiking boots for your next hiking adventure, to avoid blistered heels with new stiff boots. Bring along a small bottle of liquid silicone boot polish to daily water proof the boots. FYI: the boot polish is also good to coat dry flies. From an Albertan since 1974, having fly-fished the Rocky mountain streams from Yellowstone to Grande Cache for the last 48 years.

    This trip must have been several years ago... you both look younger than today, and Buck was still with you. Are you re-editing old videos and posting?
    Regardless it looks like you had a monster of a good time. 55#s and 65#s for pack weights are for younger people. I'm in my 60's and not so great shape and even a 40# pack would be hard for me now. After watching you mend your feet, I started to wonder how Buck was doing and how sore his feet were?

    You know what will cure a feller of backpacking and convince him he needs horses and mules? Packing elk out of the brush on pack frames 3 to 5 miles off the trail in back country..90 pound hinds.. front shoulders and back straps.. Rib cage included, it's the rules here.. The hide and head, and antlers of its a bull.. Thats a lot of backpacking but one trip with a couple horses or mules.. To hell with all of that walking.. Hey, I got me a couple of canoes.. A Wee Lassie, and a wood canoe.. I kinda like that floating around stuff.. lol...

    Sorry Jim and Tori, I'm new to your channel and have recently watched some of the older vid's and realize Buck has passed away. So this hike was on a later date. Anyway Buck sure seem like a great Dog! I see you have a new one now who seems beautiful as well. Also you guys have super cute kids!

    My first pair of "hiking boots" were actually soft leather winter boots with semi flexible souls, with 1/2" deep traction and laces up to the top of the boot ankle part. They lasted for about 20 years, never caused me blisters, and were of sufficient ankle support for uneven ground hiking for tens of kilometers per hiking trip. They likely received hundreds of treatments with boot polish liquid during these many years.

    Nice to spend time with the Buckaroo again, pulls at those heart strings. I quickly looked up the Spirit House Grave of Jacque Thappe, interestingly many Spirit House Graves in N. Wisconsin.
