Fighters were not a threat to the carrier due to their range and limited payload during it's design and initial production (1966). The F-14 was designed around the needs of the Phoenix it carried as a fleet air defense fighter. The Mig-25 was introduced to the Soviet Air Force in 1970. Four years after the Phoenix began production.

I think that's the warhead's weight, not the amount of HE. It's probably more like 20 pounds of HE sending 114 pounds of shrapnel out... That's still a big explosion though.
Best in performance for sure, but I think the standard MFDs and typical glass plate HUD as opposed to the separate camera and radar screens, and the super distinctive projecting the HUD straight on the windshield loses so much character. Still a great plane, but not as distinctive interesting as the A and B variants IMO

With the new electronics no need for a REO adding more room for heat sinks. Still basically a missile truck with 22's or 35's heading up the tip of the spear but guiding in the ordinance from the 14's.
Cant seem to think a redesigned modernized Tomcat wouldn’t be one helluva asset like the F-15EX. The new Eagle variant is essentially a missile truck augmenting 5thGen fighters and the same coupd exist for a upgraded Tomcat. Even though none are in active service and its a pipe dream, the reality is the F-14 was the greatest fleet defender in US Navy history.
F-15EX was only created to fill the USAF quota because F-35 production was behind schedule. Its massive RCS makes it more of a cruse missile truck than anything else. The F-14 is a beautiful aircraft but it would be worse in every way compared to the F-15EX which was already a highly questionable investment.
I'm pretty sure when F-14s fly, they just have the Top Gun soundtrack built in. You know, like when you left the radio on in the car and it starts playing when you start the engine.

The problem with carrying 6 Phoenixes is that you can't bring them all back if you have to land on the boat. You can only land with 4 due to weight which means dropping 2 in the water.

I bonked the back of my head hard on the underside of a Tomcat between the engine nacelles one dark night somewhere in the Indian Ocean a few years back, when I stood up too fast coming up out of the catwalk outside my shop, located aft of the island and EL 3 on the USS Kitty Hawk. I remember the fantastic photography of fighters and bombers that adorned the walls of the pentagon back in the 80's. The F-14 was incredibly photogenic. It was an airborne Rockstar!
The Tomcat was designed as a Naval interceptor for nuclear capable threats (aka Bombers). That why it carried a missile that could go over 100 nm with a big warhead. A smaller one may not take down a bomber in one hit.
No the tomcat was designed as the first 4th gen fighter. It was made to outfly and outfight everything at the time. Just like the 54 was designed to kill everything from bombers to maneuvering fighters to sea skimming cruise missiles. This whole narrative that the tomcat was not a purpose built fighter started around the time of its retirement as justification to build less capable super hornets.
It comes down to a pilot is a major factor in an air to air dogfight. Most good pilots can affect the outcome of their combats for a rather large percentage. But in a massive dogfight, this can drop off severely in a bad situation.
@@paulwollenzein-zn1lhnot entirely true. 1 it’s a combination of the pilots training and the tech and 2 dogfighting doesn’t really happen anymore with the US at least not since Vietnam supposedly. Modern missiles and rockets just put range guns and the gap is growing.
The tomcat is cool but it has problems though! the reason why the US has to retire the tomcats was first of all their maintenance costs. Second of all they were a strictly air superiority fighter when used on carriers. And surrounding it would have to be the A7 and A6 strike fighters, the e-2 hawk eye, and the ea6b prowlers to accompany it, but with the f-18s, it is multirole aircraft and now the navy has also got the ea18g which can further enhance the carrier's capability with without having to carry so many different plane types.
I think the J-20 pilot was relying way too much on getting him close to the S-300. He should have tried luring him out to open sea and maneuvering the Tomcat into a sandwich position between the J-20 and the S-300.
And probably never will. the F-14D specs are still classified by the U.S. government and will remain classified as long as Iran continues to fly F-14A's which could possibility be upgraded using the F-14D specs.
@@ROFLtheWAFLit's wings were the least of the maintenance issues. It had miles of wiring and transitors. It's engines were good for a 1960 bomber but for a 2+ Mach fighter they were lacking to say the least. Plus all the parts it had.

The real advantage of the huge warhead is being able to get a kill with the detonation further away from the target.
Yep, the Phoenix wasn’t as accurate as other missiles and had a large warhead to make up for it. Also to guarantee a kill on a bomber size target.

The tomcat is cool but it has problems though! the reason why the US has to retire the tomcats was first of all their maintenance costs. Second of all they were a strictly air superiority fighter when used on carriers. And surrounding it would have to be the A7 and A6 strike fighters, the e-2 hawk eye, and the ea6b prowlers to accompany it, but with the f-18s, it is multirole aircraft and now the navy has also got the ea18g which can further enhance the carrier's capability with without having to carry so many different plane types.

I think the J-20 pilot was relying way too much on getting him close to the S-300. He should have tried luring him out to open sea and maneuvering the Tomcat into a sandwich position between the J-20 and the S-300.
We went like this, he went like that. I said to Hollywood, "Where did he go?" Hollywood says, "Where did whoo gooo?"

There is no F-14D in DCS. Unfortunately. And the chances that we'll ever get one are slim.
And probably never will. the F-14D specs are still classified by the U.S. government and will remain classified as long as Iran continues to fly F-14A's which could possibility be upgraded using the F-14D specs.

The F14 Tomcat should've never been retired.
They definitely should've kept it, it would just need some avionic upgrades and stuff. Airframe is beautiful otherwise.

@@ROFLtheWAFLit's wings were the least of the maintenance issues. It had miles of wiring and transitors. It's engines were good for a 1960 bomber but for a 2+ Mach fighter they were lacking to say the least. Plus all the parts it had.
They retired it because of iran@@ROFLtheWAFL
