From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
    If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

      The ST-21 Program was looked into as a potential upgrade to the Tomcat to make it a 4.5gen fighter/interceptor. If you could find an accurate model of this proposed airframe on DCS I believe that you could generate a ton of interest in your content with it.

    Everyone knows the F-14 was retired too soon. The only reason the F-14 was retired was because of politics and costs. If the Super Tomcat 21 was put in service with it's new price cutting technology in it's design and latest avionics and ordinance, it would practically be a Naval F-15X with thrust vectoring. There would be almost no need for another aircraft on the deck.

Yes, as a weapon system, retired too early for fleet defender, but Navy operations are hard on airframes. Logistics, maintenance and aircrew familiarization, all had a hand in the demise of the Tomcat. The F-14's sexyness remains.

    Again Maverick would be proud of you!, it makes me think what if we had F-14 ST fully upgraded?. Because we are still trying to fill that gap that the F-14 left when we retired it!, I know we have the F-15X but it's no F-14.

    Definitely retired too soon. Should’ve kept all of the D’s. Last one rolled off the line in 92. Something that I think would be interesting. Play one scenario with the Tomcat launching from a carrier against a bomber formation with escorts from a certain distance out. Then do the same thing with a hornet. Both armed with as many AIM 174’s that they could carry. See which can do it better. It’d be interesting to observe max air speed, altitude, fuel consumption etc

    I was in the Navy when the Tomcat was introduced to the Fleet. While at my AE "A" ( At mucus Tennis shoe.) school for the tomcat. Specifically, I always wondered why they did not take the seeker out of the high-speed anti-radiation missile and put it in the seeker of the tomcats Phoenix. Granted, I was only 17 and not an engineer, but back then I thought for sure it would have been able to lock on to an enemy aircraft radar and seek that way.

      That's wild because the engines used in both are basically the same, they're interchangeable to a degree along with the F-16's single engine, just need to put on different outer bits to mount it into the engine bay and away she goes.

    • @TheOriginalFaxon
      @TheOriginalFaxon 3 месяца назад

      @@dumdumbinks274 Yea it's possible the early F-14 engines were louder than the later P&W F100 and the modernized variants like the -229 that you can get now, which are significantly more efficient and thus can produce the same amount of power at a lower output, which would make the aircraft potentially sound quieter at similar absolute thrust values. Spin that engine up to max throttle and kick in the afterburner though, and I'm sure it'll scream all the same

    If they had in fact remanufactured the youngest A's & B's along with the full run of new D's, it would not be difficult to fathom that they would have potentially gone forward with the Tomcat 21. Like another commenter said, it would be a new build like the F-15EX. Who knows what kind of engineering changes they would have made to make the wing box and screw jack mechanism simpler and stronger. New engines, all new avionics and the works ... It would have def been a natural choice for the 147 and stayed relevant for a long time still.

    So I got to thinking about his missile shooting down the AIM-174B. Would a double tap be a nasty surprise? Launch one on the jamming signal, climb or drop 2k ft or so, then launch a second? I'd think that if the launches were spaced close enough in time, but with some distance spatially, he might only have the one missile in the air. By the time he realizes there were 2 missiles launched, it'd be too late. Just a thought.

      The felon's RWR would see the lock from both missiles, though. He could bulldog an R-77 and then defend the other missile. It wouldn't be a surprise.

    a suggestion. Build a scenario with F-35B/C (with limited AMRAMs) out front with F/A-18F with AIM 174Bs agaisnt a variety of PLA aircraft. Give the USN forces an E-3D Hawkeye and see if the Lightnigh II can 'see and pass' target info to the E3D and then to the Super Hornet to see if that set up is able to defeat the PLA AF.

    The F14 had over 14,000 moving parts.
    At the time it was the most complicated aircraft that we had.
    Swap out the engines, build a newer airframe, and update technology. Then we will have "Maverick Top Gun" IV,- XV.
