      The ST-21 Program was looked into as a potential upgrade to the Tomcat to make it a 4.5gen fighter/interceptor. If you could find an accurate model of this proposed airframe on DCS I believe that you could generate a ton of interest in your content with it.

    Everyone knows the F-14 was retired too soon. The only reason the F-14 was retired was because of politics and costs. If the Super Tomcat 21 was put in service with it's new price cutting technology in it's design and latest avionics and ordinance, it would practically be a Naval F-15X with thrust vectoring. There would be almost no need for another aircraft on the deck.

    If they had in fact remanufactured the youngest A's & B's along with the full run of new D's, it would not be difficult to fathom that they would have potentially gone forward with the Tomcat 21. Like another commenter said, it would be a new build like the F-15EX. Who knows what kind of engineering changes they would have made to make the wing box and screw jack mechanism simpler and stronger. New engines, all new avionics and the works ... It would have def been a natural choice for the 147 and stayed relevant for a long time still.

    Agree! Yes please do the hypersonic fight but launch from the f15ex as its radar may even be a tad better for improving your range and detection.

    I was in the Navy when the Tomcat was introduced to the Fleet. While at my AE "A" ( At mucus Tennis shoe.) school for the tomcat. Specifically, I always wondered why they did not take the seeker out of the high-speed anti-radiation missile and put it in the seeker of the tomcats Phoenix. Granted, I was only 17 and not an engineer, but back then I thought for sure it would have been able to lock on to an enemy aircraft radar and seek that way.

    The F14 had over 14,000 moving parts.
    At the time it was the most complicated aircraft that we had.
    Swap out the engines, build a newer airframe, and update technology. Then we will have "Maverick Top Gun" IV,- XV.

  • @plastictsubasa1390
    @plastictsubasa1390 2 месяца назад +1

    Super Hornet was chosen over Super Tomcat 21 not because of capability or even cost, but because Boeing lied to Congress about the degree of commonality with the legacy Hornet, characterizing it (inaccurately) as a low-risk solution and overstating its capabilities. Legacy Tomcat cost a bunch to maintain, but with new systems and avionics, we'd have seen the same kind of improvements as with Advanced Eagle. That plus the cancellation of A-12 cost the Navy a tremendous amount of capability.

    • @jonathanpfeffer3716
      @jonathanpfeffer3716 Месяц назад

      A-12 agreed but that was inevitable. But ST-21 would have been more of a maintenance hog than a Superhornet no question.
