On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

What’s the point of having a RIO and the added weight of a 2 person fighter? Pilot is doing all the work.

I love the Tomcat videos. I've always wanted to get better in the F14 but felt the old missiles put me at such a disadvantage. These videos show me I just need to be a better pilot. well done.
Yes, you need to learn how to fly and fight the aircraft. It is an impeccable dogfighter
From what I've gathered from these videos, the Phoenix missile, while older and somewhat less capable than an AMRAAM in some areas, is still more than capable of reaching out and touching face when you apply all the same general tricks that make missiles as capable as possible. They're just really big, that's their main downside, so you can't carry as many, it just took that much longer to miniaturize all the guidance tech and everything else needed for a small diameter missile to do the same job that the Phoenix was doing way sooner. And yes, newer missiles now have longer ranges, but GS just showed why that's not always as big of a deal as you think it is, assuming you have terrain features you can mask with to help even the fight.
@@TheOriginalFaxonyea, this maps terrain is basically why GS was able to pull out a win. If it was flat, or over water, it's probably a pretty quick fight in the Typhoons favor
So the takeaway I have from this is its not about the plane it’s the pilot
@@AnthonytheAmerican a really good pilot in very spicific circumstances can beat more modern jet's, but in the vast majority of cases the more modern jet will win between two pilots of similar skill.

The EF Typhoon seems to be a pretty legit platform, which is actually rather curious for me. Over here in Europe, people tend to talk a lot of trash about the EF, so it's nice to see the thing actually doing something right ^^
It's a damn good platform. As an Indian I wish IAF would have got some Typhoons instead of the Rafales(although I love the Rafale as well)... with the intention to take on the J-20s which are a generation ahead of both Typhoons and Rafales.
The F-14 was designed in the late 60's. Thing is, the engineers designed the Tomcat to be able to serve well into the 21st century. They designed it to be able to hold its own against more modern opponents. Another awesome video. Great fight! Absolutely love it!

I do not honestly think they were thinking that far ahead. The phoenix missile system, variable geometry wings and low wing loading future proofed a bit more than the f4. Still my fave of all time, but too much maintenance to be viable in the 21st century.
its not that the F-14 is still viable. He just was able to dodge every Meteor fired at him.
But consider that 90% of air combat does not happen in areas where you can "hug" a mountain to dodge a missile.
Over europe you are basicly above flat ground until you hit the Alps or Carpatian Mountain Range. There is no dodging like that.
The one thing I've learned from f14 videos is to never bring a bird to a cat fight

@@WhoopityDoo Having said this wich is true.. is also true that as Snort said they swaped the AMRAAM capability for the LANTIRN to make the Tomcat a capable strike platform.. as he said they had tried to kill stuff in the air for decades and couldnt find nothing but there was a lot of killing stuff in the ground and they needed a longer range strike platform than the Hornet.

That was an outstanding fight. Great proof that you don't need to come out of the clouds directly above him and be in a -4g inverted dive to get excitement out of it.

That's some airmanship- play hide and seek with Meteors, hugging the terrain and terrifying your WSO, hoping the other guy runs out of missiles before you run out of luck, then going mano-a-mano, switching radar modes, and nailing him with a short-range missile.
I love the fact the Tomcat always looks like it's about to shake itself apart. 😅

That's what happens when you give yourself terrain to hide and the bandit must cross an open flat plane to come to you.

1 minute in I'd bet that the meteor missile and a new radar is too much for the old tomcat systems with phoenix missiles. A gun fight might be more fun.

Good choice! It's going to feel weak in BVR until you have lots of practice... but it's armament and radar cannot be understated.

Just watching his mission vids will teach you a lot on how to approch a fight and what to do in counter moves but nothing but practice can teach you the situational awareness GS has. He makes it look easy I know.

As a kid I visited the Great State of Maine airshow in 1993. I'm from Belfast Northern Ireland and hadn't had the experience of seeing military jets flying low and close to me. The F-14 is a volume of sound I found hard to describe to people for years until the Typhoon came about. Both those fighters are the loudest sounds I ever heard.

Imagine a completely modernized F-14 with new missiles. It would be a beast. The Navy probably wishes they had it now with the long ranges needed in the south Pacific.
A modernized Phoenix would basically be the same thing as the Russian R-37M
The best planes usually get modernized as seen through history. Unless some politic invervenes.
I'm curious if the F-35 could do as well as the Tomcat did here. Perhaps he'll give it a whirl in the future. FatAmy vs Eurofighter. Same landscape and pilots.
@@firebald2915 with AIM-120Ds it would be a very dangerous opponent. I doubt the Eurofighter would be able to lock the F-35 soon enough

What was Eurofighter doing with the last Phoenix? Did he tried to notch it...while climbing?
I think it would be pretty sweet to see a couple different rounds in this same situation but without knowing what the opponent is flying. Of course someone is going to pull out the f22. But any plane can only be used once. Best 2 out of 3 wins.

The one advantage of the Phoenix is the fact it climbs way up and then drops outta space on your head can sometimes keep it off th opponents RWR.

In all fairness, if the EF's DASS was modelled it would have made the F-14's day thoroughly miserable. Would be interesting to see this match up of the F-14 against HB's "Pay" module of the EF, if the Typhoon systems are modeled on par detail wise to the F-14's. Please don't think I am being salty in any way, I absolutely adore the Cat, but the Phoon... Well... ;)

@@Stinger522 As "notsureyou" replied, the TRD, towed radar decoy, is an amazing piece of kit, more than just a "decoy". An integral part of the DASS system. In all honesty and in all due respect to the Cat afficianodos; after watching this rather good video several times (props to GS) the Tiffie, without a shadow of doubt, would have eaten the Cat for breakfast, dinner and lunch, no matter the terrain, no matter the pilot, purely on technological merit. Incredibly good flying by GS, a masterclass in how to think outside the box, but not very good at showing how the Typhoon would have dealt with the Tomcat. I rather think this was a showcase masterclass of superb virtual airmanship, detailing how to possibly survive in a given situation (Geographic, etc) rather than an outright Aircraft vs Aircraft technological "shoot out" engagement. The mighty Cat, sorely missed!

Several years ago a fighter pilot buddy once said.......it's not about the best plane but who's the best trained. Best trained on their aircraft can overcome a lot of disadvantages in the real world.....but in sim world, I have to say, the F-14........how do you NOT root for it....even against the 5th gen stuff.
