As a child of Georgia this seems about right, though if anyone's confused about the bit about lake Lanier. Lake Lanier was a black settlement that got destroyed and flooded during reconstruction in a similar fashion to what became of black wall st. Or the slums that became central park. Just another blotch of bloody hands in America's history that goes unnoticed. Though the town under the water, seems pretty well reserved minus the bones and alligators infesting said waters.

    • @christopherwilde6673
      @christopherwilde6673 2 года назад +103

This is both correct and incorrect. There was a black town called Oscarville where Lake Lanier now is. However it was attacked and destroyed by white supremacists in 1912. All due to, as was the usual back then, a false rape allegation. Lake Lanier was created 44 years later in 1956, and at that time there was no black towns in the area for the obvious reasons. The two events are unrelated to each other, only sharing the same general location and nothing more. Sorry, I got curious about all of this awhile back and did some digging into it to separate the myth from the truth.

My mom is from Georgia and pretty much everything in this video applies to the exact area she grew up in. Some of the places mentioned were only a couple minutes from her house! Needless to say she cracked up laughing.
    (1:46) "He's not exaggerating! It's monstrous!"
She also added (as a comment on the bit about college football) that "college students get two days off for the Florida-Georgia game". Jesus.

I still cannot believe how far that carpet gag has spiralled....
For backstory, two prop artists made camouflage suits to match the carpet of the Marriott Marquis, the main DragonCon hotel. This was widely considered an inspried costume idea, and tons of people jumped on board; it went so far that the carpet producer sent one of them - Volpin Props - a cease and desist order. Despite this (and the fact that carpet was torn out and replaced), the Cult of the Marriott Carpet lives on. Some people even went dumpster diving for pieces of the original carpet when it was removed, but most stick to making costumes out of unliscensed reproduction fabric
And, no. I am not joking about any of this

I grew up in Buford and I went to Lake Lanier every summer. My mom believes a lot of the drownings may be because there's a part of the lake where the floor drops pretty dramatically. The family rule was never go out further than waist deep and be careful where you step. It also helps that my dad was formerly a lifeguard and that was the part of him that showed up when his children were near water. I'm surprised I didn't hear about it being haunted since haunted is my mom's favorite feature of any location. Were they just not talking about that in the 80s and 90s?

Few things of note as a GA Native:
The biggest news story about Lake Lanier in the past few years was the droughts happenin in 07-08, where old ass bodies were found on the dryin lakebed parchin in the sun cause the water level got too low. I went there 5 years in a row for Boy Scouts, and we never touched the shore. S'haunted. Believe me.
Savannah, Georgia is the best city on the Eastern Coast south of the Mason-Dixon. Y'all don't wanna admit it, but I'm right on that front. Accept it, s'easier.
The perimeter is an asphalt hellscape for sure, but don't you go mentionin our traffic without GA-400. You either get up on that sucka at least 2 hours early or you gon be late today! Also, at last count, 71 streets are named Peachtree in Atlanta, but OTP if you say you're on Dogwood, ya betta specify the county, much less the neighborhood you're drivin in, ya hear?
That there chicken's huge, and the food's quite nice, havin been there myself a few times. Graduated KSU. Don't go to the Marietta Diner, trust me. Its outside is shinier and less greasy than its insides.
M'actually a full resident of Cumming. Lived here my whole life. Yes, get your laughs out now, it's a nice place. Small town feel, good high schools, great library, a DQ across the road from a cemetery, ya know, the works.
    Rapid Fire!
My family's firmly divided on how to say pecan. Thanksgivings are nuts.
Why watch the Master's when you could watch the World Series? LET'S GO BRAVES!
The Thomasville Rose Festival is better than the Macy's Day Parade. No questions. Don't get it mixed up with Atlanta, their festival is for Ros-ay, very different.
Get to your hotel for DragonCon at least a day in advance. Don't ask why. You know.
The Varsity is NOT just for tourists. I've been there only about a dozen times myself, always happy and full. By the way, don't get the F.O. That's for tourists, y'all can just get that atcha local Orange Julius. Nah, get the peach pie. Thank me later.
Gnats are just as bad as mosquitoes, it's pronounced VI-DAYL-YUH, and if ever I'm bout to die, I'll make Clermont one of my last stops before the pearly gates.
Also that curse hit me hard in the chest, (though that 28-3 still hurts) cause if Waffle House is ever closed before 11, the state's in shutdown mode, never mind 9!!!
I hate our vaccine rate here, and our mindset towards it. Go fuck yaself, Kemp.
One last thing: Popeye's is betta.
