The word “Mortar” comes from the Latin word “Mortarium,” which can be loosely translated as “place for pounding.” The word “Pestle” comes from the classical Latin word “Pistillum” meaning “pounder”.
The bomb is similar named because it is aimed at one place, and then pounds it.

little tip: the closer you get the potion icon to the silhouette, the stronger the potion. also with having the potion recipe saved you can just skip the mixing/grinding part of it; especially useful when it’s a strong potion and it’s difficult to get it lined up perfectly
As Mark says, this game was a delight to watch. Wouldn’t mind watching more videos of this game because it was wonderful

Seems to me that for some games Mark intentionally doesn't complete a game, not because he doesn't like it or doesn't have time but because he'd rather the viewer play it themselves.
He doesn't seem to do "slow, easy-going, puzzle" let's plays typically. Especially not as a series

It would be really cool if there were some orders that made you need to brew a lower level potion, like for the beer potion you can’t make it too high of a level because it would actually hurt them
I think that's a mechanic, but not so directly. An example being people asking for rat poison: if you give them a strong poison, they won't pay as much as someone asking for the strong poison.
Hello from the future! The game's fully released now and that's actually a mechanic; some orders request either a potion with "weak" effects or "strong" ones, and will pay more than usual for said potion. It gives you something to do with all those weak potions you end up making when exploring or after borking a brew.

I played the demo of this but there's a few things to know:
Potions have 3 tiers, obviously the higher the tier the better, the more aligned your "cursor" is over the outline the closer you get to tier 3
Water is a handy dandy way to line it up _juuuust_ right
The basement has some secret but I didn't get to find out what
Other than that, you're doing great

Mortar is the bowl and comes from the Latin moartarium meaning literally “Bowl for pounding and mixing.” Pestle is the rod like part and comes from the Latin pistillum meaning “pounder”
And based on the tales I've heard, the artillery mortars were named after the grinding mortars, since the earliest ones were in essence giant metal bowls filled with black powder and a mortar ball.

I had to go and look in my steam library, I played it when it first came out back in September. I think it was just called Potion Craft. Lol. That's amazing.
The whirlpools can move the potion around them when the cauldron is heated.
Also you can make tier 3 potions by perfectly centering the potion icon on an effect.
The recipe book is useful because you don't have to manually make saved recipes, for example if you make a tier 3 healing potion and don't want to go through the process of grinding, adding, mixing, and centering the potion every single time, you can save the recipe and use that to instantly make the potion from those ingredients.
im guessing the recipe book will use the same ingredients you did in the same amount.. so if you use a bunch to go one way then double back on yourself it'll waste them each time? Hence delete them and make better recipes?
@@Midwinter_Snow yeah it makes the potion just as you did so you need to be as efficient and cheap as possible; sure it’s easy to make a health potion with X and Y ingredients but if you rarely get them you can’t make it often
along with Blacksmithing, I also wanted to be a Alchemist before I found out that modern chemistry isn't as exciting and being a Alchemist isn't a thing unless I can time travel and, and even then I would probably be killed for black magic or something... but I do own a mortar and pestle and I have turned items into other items via chemicals... the easiest thing is fools gold and "accidentally" making things explode... god I miss chemistry, maybe I'll get back into it as a hobby

Imagine if you could use the potion of frost as a method to create makeshift fridges and sell the potions as a way to keep the fridge working. It would be constant income. Keeping food fresh would be a pretty high priority.

Fun fact: a mortar, as in a mortar and pestle (pronounced pessl, without a t), is the same as a mortar as in a tiny cannon. They're essentially sturdy bowl-shaped things. A mortar (warfare) is so short its just bowl shaped, and has no barrel
Fun fact: mortar as in the indirect projectile launcher, and mortar as in mortar and pestle, both basically mean the same thing. The original weapon mortars looked basically like a really big mortar-and-pestle mortar. And now the word mortar sounds like complete nonsense when I say or think it.

Ironically I'm a mortarman in the Marine Corps and when a mortar is incoming we do indeed yell "incoming", a mortar flying through the air does also make a loud whistling noise before impact.

The traveler can't handle Mark's potion, it's too strong for him.
Mortar: from Latin "mortarium", a vessel in which to grind things, derived from an older word meaning to crush. In ancient rome, a mortarium was a very large wide bowl with a flat bottom that was used to grind spices and herbs to makes sauces, but also to mix liquid and mushy stuff in, so it can also have the meaning of a general mixing bowl. From that usage is derived the word for the mortar used in brick laying, because it is mixed in a mortarium. The word for a mortar to shoot mortar shells out of is derived from the shape of the mortar when it was invented in the middle ages, they were much shorter and thicker than modern mortars and resembled very much a mortar that an apothecary (or alchemist) would use.
Pestle: from Latin "Pistillum", the crusher used in the mortarium, also derived from an older word, that also means to crush. The word piston has the same origin, because of the movement resembling that of a pestle.

Wasn't expecting Mark to play this game, happy to hear that he enjoyed playing the game!
Also, it's funny how Mark kept making jokes about making a potion to enhance certain parts of the body because you can make a potion of libido in this game.
