I was looking for my first and last "big" watch, and in the end the choice was between the Rolex Explorer 36 and the Omega Aqua Terra Skyfall, the one with the vertical lines. A friend sends me a photo of his hometown retailer's window with the Skyfall, where he bought his Speedmaster a couple of months before. I went to try it, it was beautiful, and 30% off. Everything was perfect and I chose the Omega.

I own that one as well. Awesome watch. I also own a Speedy and a really vintage 1968 Constellation. I would like a Rolex Explorer, but I am honestly put off by the way they (or as such, the ADs) are treating potential customers. How about neither on the Omega vs Explorer 40. I say Explorer 36. 214270. Incredibly versatile. Easy to wear. Easy to grab out of the watch box when not sure what to grab. Goes with everything and in every situation. And it is a Rolex just for me. Not blingy. Very few people know what it is. Perfect one watch if I had to choose between the two (false) choices.
And how about fountain pens to go with the watches and cars. All, when made well, are wonderfully analog, tactile, visceral user experiences that you just don’t get from more “modern,” and sterile, alternatives.

I like the car vs watch analogy. Cars of course are more useful and get you more feeling, however in the end I think watches are a much better way to spend money. Key reason is that cars are very expensive to maintain (especially nice ones): you have to pay taxes, insurance, emission tests, services, you need a garage (or more than one if you collect). That adds up to a lot. Watches cost almost nothing to own: no tax (after your bought the watch), basically zero maintenance cost (you actually DON'T need to send you watch for service, unless something goes wrong with it; I have never given any of my watches for service and have been owning watches for 30 years, and they all still work).

had the smp300 with white wave dial, sold it after 3 weeks.. too clunky and thick.. even on the rubber strap it wasn't a joy to wear.. sold it for a black bay 58 and never looked back.. when I had the omega I had an explorer 2 and that made the omega seem very average.. now I have a gmt master two and that widens the gap even more. there isn't really an omega I want.. I don't mind the design visually, but they just don't translate into a good experience. your mileage may vary, but it's not for me. *side note: I'm not into any other tudors except the bb58 either, for that same thickness reason.

I feel like I shouldn't say this. But I think it depends on the watch. If it's a dive watch, I could go either way. If it's a chrono, I gotta go with the Speedy. But great brands. I think that omega watches are mechanically better. I think rolex bracelets are better. I call it a wash overall. But because of prices... omega all day

Hi Fed, FWIW, "one" is not a collection of anything as a collection is defined as three or more curated items.
That being said, as someone who was a real one watch guy for 30+ years, my 1983 Rolex GMT Pepsi 16750 (1983 to 2015). I wore this watch 24/7, 365 for the first 22 years as a Marine Corps, corporate and airline pilot and I showered with it daily, let alone ocean swimming and trips to the hot tub. How has it held up, see my T.M. Watchbox Collector Conversation from April of 2023. Tim remarked that if I told him the watch had spent most of its life locked in a safe, he's have believed me. Taken care of, but not babied and serviced regularly [four times in 40 years by trusted independent Rolex trained watchmakers]. Original matt dial and hands with beautiful patina on the long dead tritium lum, never any water damage.

Sorry, but the Explorer equivalent in Omega is the Aquaterra, which is a much better watch. The Sea Master Rolex equivalent would be the Submariner

One watch? Heresy. Although i find myself wearing the 1665 Rail more and more, except in the pitch black since there's no lume.

One watch Omega, but not the SMP, the vintage 300 Seamaster is SO much nicer!!
Hodinkee special editions? What Federico said, but also they're just not too special anymore. Hodinkee use to find niche cool companies to work with and do unique things. NOW? It seems like brands trying to manufacturer buzz for slow moving lines throw a funky color on it, call it Hodinkee, and charge 25% more.
Looks to me like Revolution is doing the 🔥 limited editions these days if you can afford them! 😢

As a one and done 'collection' I would actually spend more time looking at the Aqua Terra and not the traditional Seamaster 300 at all. I think the Aqua Terra is an outstanding range of watches and is very much overlooked. The availability and customer experience outflanks Rolex every time. Even the Omega packaging is superior. People need to stop seeing Rolex the way that Rolex want, and with greater objectivity. Rolex is badly over exposed, with strong products but a poor overall offer in terms of value, availability and customer treatment. It really wouldn't hurt the industry if Rolex fell out of fashion for a while and had to go back and improve themselves to get re-established.

Buy Rolex if you can afford, buy Tudor if you can't. I still Remember $195 quartz schatters in the 80s under the Omega brand, so not really a watch brand I want too much to do with.

CPO means nothing in watches unless you’re talking ultra rare that very few would be able to confirm. Just buy from someone with a lot of experience and a good reputation.

    1. I enjoy Fed's Q&A sessions. I know Fed doesn't read comments, but my suggestion would be to add two more questions to make it a 10 minute+ session.
    2. Regarding limited edition releases, the greatest release in all of 2023 was the Del Ray Watches limited edition of 17 hand crafted watches maniacally designed by watch masters Fed & John P, and sold out in less then 2 hours! Caliente baby!
    3. The perfect one watch collection, and worn by billionaire Bill Gates, has to be the Casio Duro. 😃

You can't call one watch a collection; it's a stupid term created to boost someone's ego. One watch is one watch.
    - Hey, what's your hobby?
    - I am collecting watches.
    - Cool, can I see your collection?
    - Sure, here's my Explorer...
