    • @OmegaTyrant
      @OmegaTyrant 4 года назад +29

      @@davidgoldstein3348 Badge Boost glitch is unavoidable, it happens when any stat is increased or decreased, and AI opponents will utilize stat-dropping moves throughout the entire game, while stat-boosting moves are vital for any pokemon that learns them even if the Badge Boost glitch didn't exist. If you tried banning any use of it, you'll have to reset any time the AI inflicts you with a stat drop (you know how much resetting that would entail?), and you'll have to avoid using any stat-boosting moves at all, which would severely inhibit strategy and handicap the pokemon that learn those moves. It's just a quirk of Gen 1 you have to play with.
      Also Jrose's videos aren't about if you can just beat the game under these challenges (we already know it's possible in about every Pokemon game with everything but absolute trash like Weedle, Caterpie, and Magikarp), but at how low a level and how quickly you can do it with each pokemon. So if you want to accurately gauge how well each pokemon does on their own merits, you have to see how well they each can utilize all the weird shit in Gen 1 too.

A glitch that occurs beyond the player's capacity but can also be manipulated in such an easy way as increasing one's stats, is one thing a player will encounter even in a casual playthrough and could manipulate, either willingly or unwillingly. It's not something counterintuitive or out of the way like the Marowak glitch or the encounter manipulation glitch.

    If the Badge Boost Glitch (in this case, via Harden on Geodude) was so overpowered to the point the 2nd most difficult Pokémon to do this challenge with became much, much easier, wouldn't that also imply a change to Squirtle in the tier list? If I recall correctly, Jrose deliberately didn't use Withdraw because he thought that it wouldn't compare to the boosts granted by Growth on Bulba and Swords Dance on Char. But look what Harden did to Geodude! A man can't help but wonder...

    • @isaotron
      @isaotron 4 года назад +83

      Yeah, this is a fair point. When he originally did the Squirtle run, he didn't realize HOW GOOD this strategy is

    • @cereal7591
      @cereal7591 4 года назад +62

      That's a concern of mine as well. Even though the tier list is based upon the FIRST RUN of each Pokémon, so none of them are fully optimized, I believe the omission of the B. B. glitch for Squirtle is on a whole different level from variants such as the selection of which trainers to fight or even the order in which the Gyms are completed, and can make a bigger difference.
      So I hope Jrose re-does that run adhering to the glitch. Even though that one is especially tedious, and some may argue that it would be unfair to only re-do that one.

    • @TheCalmPsycho
      @TheCalmPsycho 4 года назад +44

      @@cereal7591 He also says that there is no way for the tier list to be scientific by any means, so of course there are going to be new bits of information and strategies learned in each subsequent run. Otherwise he would have to rerun everything a multitude of times each to get anything close to accurate, and even then luck will always play a factor. I would rather have a 53 part series than a 530 part series where everything is repeated every time a new optimization or bit if info is found.
      If I remember correctly, this is the first time he used DVs and specifically battling pokemon for a specific stat increase, will he have to do that for every run? Should he not have done it for this run because he didn't do it for others, so Geodude got an unfair advantage? Way too many variables to worry about in my opinion, I just enjoy the series as it comes out.

    • @TheBlueWizzrobe
      @TheBlueWizzrobe 4 года назад +31

      @@TheCalmPsycho I think it's different when you consider how much of a staple the badge boost glitch is in his runs at this point though. Yes, he will always be learning and acquiring new information, but the badge boost glitch is so significant that I feel as though it completely invalidates the first run.

    • @TheCalmPsycho
      @TheCalmPsycho 4 года назад +8

      @@TheBlueWizzrobe Then maybe he should put an * next to squirtle on the chart with a mention that he didn't use the bbg on that run and to take that into consideration. There is always going to be outliers, Geodude is going to be one of those outliers with the psuedo EV training/resetting for DVs. If he didn't do that, and got garbage DVs, and didn't specifically train speed, he very well may have needed to be level 85, 95, or 100, it was a massive difference as early game those increases mattered. Fixing the outliers will only create more outliers, and the cycle continues.
      This is a for fun series, I doubt anyone is going to look at the tier list at the end and decide squirtle is objectively bad and unusable just because of an extreme case use that very few people are ever going to do outside youtube challenges. Especially when Jrose himself said it wasn't going to be scientific or perfect. Holding him to those standards when each run has so many variables and takes hours to do, edit, and upload each and every time is simply unreasonable.

Paras too was also another really nonoptimal run where you chose Swords Dance instead of Growth, when the latter lets you boost six times and gets you enough Special to survive X4 Fire attacks, but that one wasn't quite as egregious a mistake as ignoring Withdraw with Squirtle was.

    Huge fan of the series! I was very surprised to see how well Geodude did, particularly against Starmie and Jynx. I have a question regarding the stat increase that clever use of the badge boosts give. Twice in the video you stated that 6 x Harden gives a 4,5 times increase. However, applying 12,5% seven times (1 + 6 reapplications) comes out to a ~2,28 times increase to the original stat value. If I am wrong, I would love to hear the actual math going on here for better understanding future videos. Keep up the great work!

      1.125^13 is roughly 4.5 (actually 4.6). I wonder if the boost gets double-applied as part of the glitch or if it's just a miscalculation by Jrose.

    • @OmegaTyrant
      @OmegaTyrant 4 года назад +4

      He did miscalculate, the stats were increased by X2.28 after six boosts. It was just Defense that was increased X4.5, as increasing a stat six stages boosts it by X4 and then you get an additional 50% with the initial badge boost added on top of that. Maybe he mixed up the boost to his Defense with the boost that applied to the rest of his stats.

    • @OmegaTyrant
      @OmegaTyrant 4 года назад +34

      Paras too was also a really nonoptimal run when he chose Swords Dance over Growth. Yeah Paras' Attack and physical movepool is better and normally you want a move that boosts you up faster, but with being able to boost six times instead of three, Paras' similarly horrible Speed can be boosted up to X2.28 its original value so it can actually outspeed everything (where it then autowins with Spore), while boosting its Special enough to survive X4 Fire attacks that don't crit when you can't outspeed, and since it has Spore it can get those six boosts in pretty reliably even in bad starting matchups like the Pidgeot. By using Growth you can win at significantly lower levels than with Swords Dance (for reference I did it entering the Elite 4 at level 49 and finish at 57, albeit with perfect DVs and grinding out for Stat EXP, so doing it Jrose's way it would probably require another 5-10 levels, but that's still a big improvement over his Paras run).

      ytreza yes, but then that would outlaw any stat-boosting moves, which would make these a lot harder, if not impossible, and if your gonna say, “well just don’t use it for the badge boost glitch” then that gets into a lot of semantics, so it’s much easier to just allow it.

    • @_Ytreza_
      @_Ytreza_ 4 года назад +1

      @@aradia9726 I am not against allowing it. Actually my position is either be aware that you are using a glitch to make the game a lot easier (when you use Harden to boost anything but your defense for instance '_') or try to beat the game without using this.
      In most of his videos, he says that it's not really a glitch because there's no way to avoid it etc and I feel like it's not honest. If he said "I know that boosting all your stats by using Harden is a glitch but I allow myself to use it because I can (or whatever reason really)", then I would be fine with it, but saying "I spam Harden to boost all my stats because it's not really a glitch to get your stats boosted when your stats are modified because you can't control when it happens", I am sure you can see that something sounds wrong in this sentence.

    While watching this, I had an idea regarding level up moves, kinda inspired from Pathfinder’s feat retention mechanic.
    We keep the normal ‘1 move every few levels’ idea, but instead of having to take the given move at that level, you can choose any move in the level up move pool, up to that level? Leads to more interesting runs, like delete the ground type attack for the flying gym, but retain it for the electric gym. Obviously this will make the game easier, but this can be balanced with making trainer fights more difficult, and less hand holding.
