My mom was an single parent alcoholic who rarely interacted with me. Barney was my friend. I don’t know what else I can say about that. 💜
I felt the same about the Sesame Street community.
I felt that way about Mr.Rogers. I still watched him when I came home from high school because it was nice to have someone talking to me in a kind voice instead of my mother’s screaming at me for no reason.
My mom was a narc. I loved barney and friends 💜
As the child of an alcoholic, I understand. I’m sorry you had to go through that and I hope you have healed.
💜
Out of the many diverse topics Dr Grande has covered over the years, I never expected to hear him say "Can I analyze the case of Barney the Dinosaur." 🤣
😂😂😂🤣🤣, I know. Dr. Grande’s delivery makes it even better 😂😂🤣🤣
Nothing beats "Can I analyze The Couch Guy?" 🤣🤣
This whole episode was a laugh riot, except the dude shooting his neighbor part.
Ikr 🤣😂😭
It's related to a documentary about Barney they recently made
You’re not giving Barney enough credit. I was 4 when the show aired so my perspective is different because it taught me a LOT of things: cleaning, working together, making friends, sharing, emotions/feelings, etc. My parents were emotionally unavailable.
Us older siblings did not have that fond experience. I didn't remember how much I used to despise having to watch it with my younger bro who was crazy about it and made me sing the dumb songs.
This! I had an incredibly toxic and chaotic childhood, especially during my Barney years. It made me tear up in the doc when the actress that played Tosha said she was SA as a child during this time in her life, so the show was an escape and a blessing for her as a child.
Ur giving barney way too much credit
@@moomyung9231 Yeah, but did you have Mr. Rogers? That was my 'Barney". I totally know what they mean, even if I was slightly too old for Barney.
(I actually wasn't, because one girl from the show was actually in my class, but she was playing a younger age).
Yeah, I grew up right by the studios. You'd think that I'd hate it more than you, but the tour was kind of neat...they also filmed "Honey, I Blew Up The Kid" and "The Hunt For Red October" at those studios.
EDIT: OH! And "Walker, Texas Ranger"!
@@moomyung9231 Yeah it was death..if you had to sit thru it you’d sing the bad version.
Both of my kids loved Barney in the early 1990s. They outgrew Barney by the time they began elementary school. They moved on real dinosaurs and interests in science, especially my daughter, who was obsessed with dinosaurs as a child. They are in their 30s now and are very well adjusted. No issues with Barney at all.
Exactly
"Chicken step on Barney" 😭
I'm 37 now. I still haven't recovered
Sounds like Barney got to you, too.
@@jonathanalpart7812 lol. Not really.
every parent thinks their child is well adjusted.
I grew up with Barney in the late 90s, I never understood why people hated a safe show for toddlers.
Because of his "permanent creepy smile." 😆
Because it crossed the threshold from for toddlers to corny. As a kid I loved sesame Street and Eurekas castle reruns and even that young I thought barney was corny
I think it was more older siblings and parents hearing it on repeat that upset them all so much. I went to middle school with a guy who had a small sister and we got to hear about how stupid shows for that age were. People just hate things they over hear.
Because dinosaurs never existed
I never understood it either, I still don't.
My son was obsessed with Barney. OMG, he even learned to fully operate a VCR at the age of two to watch the shows.
He grew up to be an intellectual.
💜
"an intellectual"?
Could mean a lot of things.
@@somexp12 as opposed to THE intellectual
@@wendyleeconnelly2939 I mean, is he a physicist, sociologist, philologist, economist, or, perhaps, he's just an English graduate who puts on airs and writes for The New Yorker. All are probably smart, but some are more challenging and value adding than others.
I had a 3 year old niece during the Barney days and she LOVED HIM. I had to watch his purple tail constantly. Never thought people would hate on a kind T-Rex that taught, loved and even comforted children. 🤷🏾♀️
👍♥️♥️
Usually grown ups hate like that. I am glad your daughter liked him. Mine loved him and today they are well adjusted and smart at school. I am not saying I owe it to him, but he did have a positive effect on them.
The last stuffed animal my mom got me, I think, was a talking Barney - he was a little weird but lovable
Barney saved my little nephew when a pan caught on fire. He knew how to wake up his half wit mother and get out of the house. So thank God for Barney. He’s a grown man with a child of his own now. 👶👨👩👧
Very glad your nephew is ok, but also this made me laugh bc I read it as Barney is a grown man with a child of his own now 😆 if that’s the case, very glad for Barney too lol
Barney taught me as a child that everyone’s families looks different. Not everyone was raised by mom and dad. I remember the girl Kathy lived with her grandma. That always stuck out to me as a kid and I have Barney to thank for that. Arts and crafts was interesting to me because of The Barney Bag segment where they did crafts. Ppl are not giving Barney the credit it deserves.
Barney saved his ass I would say lol
I wouldn't have imagined Barney or Elmo as subjects of controversy.
Me either.
I would think more like Bert and Ernie.
I know. It's so weird. Especially compared to kids' programming now, it was so innocent and kind.
Nothing is safe from democrats
The person who originally did the voice of Elmo was put away for child rape
The only people Barney terrorized were the parents and older siblings of the littles that obsessed over him. And whomever says Barney never taught lessons or didn't do anything on the show, obviously never actually watched more than 1 episode.
My brother says to this day he can’t stand the purple dinosaur because of how much I made him watch it with me. Lol
I could never like Barney... my one niece was obsessed with the show... I never thought it to be evil... I was just 18 and found the show corny as hell. No harm done to children though... so I absolutely agree.
@@corrinabanks3567 well put. I think this summed it up well for how adults feel about Barney or a lot of other kids shows. When my daughter and grandchildren were little I did like shows like Sesame Street, Thomas the tank engine and the big comfy couch though.
@@amyrussell860 when my boys were little they watched lots of kid's shows... Barney was not one of them though... lol
My oldest loved Blue's Clues and of course Sesame Street ... those didn't bother me at all.
Yeah i used to watch it because of the information
He sounds pretty harmless to me. You pointed out that he didn't deal with real-world problem-solving, but also that his audience was a bunch of toddlers. Toddlers shouldn't really have too many problems to deal with, and if they did, then maybe Barney gave the toddlers a break; somewhere to go for a short time, when everything was okay and familiar.
Exactly! A show for toddlers shouldn't have all these serious issues lol. It's great that it was geared toward children, very sweet and lighthearted.
Yeah, eaxctly. For those of us in abusive households, the abusers usually left us alone while we were glued to the TV. It helped me disassociate in a much more positive way, filled with laughter and hope even as lamps were being thrown around me. ACE Score of 6.5.
I guess I don’t see it either. Sesame Street is the one that got weird. Problem solving skills? Little deep for toddlers. But if it affected some children I feel for them.🤷♀️mine werent into Barney but looking back other shows on Disney that I have since found out were no good! I don’t know if any of it is good for children at this point. This analysis in my opinion is pretty off the charts. I remember the hate on the Dino. I thought that was really weird. I figured this would make me understand but it didn’t. Sounds like ppl making trouble to me.
I’m glad so many people felt comforted by Barney. My younger daughter loved Barney and we watch many hours of his show and listened to his music for hours!
My little sister loved him, Lolol!
My first child grew up in the era of Barney. He loved Barney and Barney did in fact teach some things. We used to sing the song “clean up” when trying to get my toddler to clean his room. We sang the “I love you” song all the time. Barney was a good show. Many years later Caillou came on for my younger children. THAT one is about a horrible BRAT with out supervision. That one wasn’t allowed to be watched. 🛑 EDIT: Could you analyze the Caillou cartoon? I’d love to see what you have to say about that one!
@@faith5563 I don’t know about you and the 40’s-50s TV situation. I do know That probably 99% of people had a tv in the 90’s so I don’t think that would constitute a “privilege” remark. I can assure you, (since you seem concerned about my children) my children did not grow up in from of a tv. We had designed TV time, designated art time, dedicated learning time, etc. we are talking about toddlers so we most certainly had a designated nature time. Our days were pretty full of playing and learning.

Oh yes..Caillou lol. I let my kids watch it but I would point out which behaviors wouldn’t fly at our house. We had a few discussions over it.
One day my 3 year old daughter ran off and got lost. I called the cops and told them that my daughter had on a Barney jacket, Barney pants, Barney shirt, Barney shoes, Barney socks. The cops found her no problem.
Imagine your surprise when they returned to you, the real barney!
@@Robert08010 a neighbor found her and called the cops at the same time as I was calling the cops and so a handsome cop came driving up with her in the car and she acted like she didn't know me cuz she wanted to stay with the cop and ride around with him in his fancy car. This all happened 25 years ago and I still remember that day. She was only missing for about 10 minutes but it was the longest 10 minutes of my life.
Barney was a welcomed relief, brief hours of fun, joy in my chaotic, dysfunctional home life as a child. I never thought he was evil etc.
“Unregulated and uncontrolled positivity and repetition” - I think this is what I took comfort in about that show! Being raised in an unstable household in the 90s, I learnt so many of my life skills from that show. This now explains a lot to me about myself, actually 😂😶
Amen!
Great name!
doc is looking at it as an adult and obviously its annoying. but you are correct there was nothing wrong with it for kids.
I LOVED Barney when I was a kid. I watched it probably much longer than most kids- until I was in fourth grade (so about 8). I knew every single song and my favorite kid on there was named Kathy and she wore black and white saddle shoes. I begged my mom for a pair for my birthday and I was so excited when I got them I wore them long after I outgrew them bc I couldn't bear to get rid of them. I think me watching it for so long might have had something to do with my not so great home life so 30 minutes of sappy positivity was a welcome distraction. Honestly I have fond memories of the show.
I have to agree with you. I think the show had different effects for different children. I had an extremely hard childhood. And Barney was one thing that was always happy, safe, and loving. So for me, as a child in foster care moving from place to place. It meant everything.
You were clearly drawn into his mind control cult. That's why you watched him years longer than you should have.
I watched it until I was older too. I remember picking Barney out at the video (VHS) rental store lol
Real life is hard, even for kids. I wouldn’t be a kid again for anything; Barney is a nice break for kids too.
Kathy was my favorite too, and I too wanted those shoes badly! I still do lol.
@@christinaeclecticrall5176 I wore those shoes with everything!! My mom said I even tried to wear them to the beach 😂

True story:
My niece was about 4 years old and was with her mom in a grocery store. Several checkout lines over a VERY large woman was dressed in bright purple sweats top and bottom.
My niece thought it was Barney and threw an absolute screaming fit in the store, crying that she wanted to go see Barney and pointing over there.
My sister had to take her from the store to get her to calm down. 🤣

I enjoyed the Barney series while my children were growing up. It reinforced what I was teaching at home - turntaking, social skills, please/thank you, working as a group on a project, communication.
Kids are capable of figuring out the social skills that work best. The use of purple conditioning is unnecessary and will cause addiction to grape soda and loss of self-awareness.
@@valleygirl2530 No. Children are not capable of figuring out healthy social skills on their own. They must be taught. Social skills that are simply figured out on one's own tend to be survival/coping strategies rather than anything conducive to healthy relationships.
Barney taught me all about pumpernickel bread, magic words & conserving energy by turning the water off while brushing my teeth ~ among many other things. The only problem I ever had was not having an opportunity to be on that dang show bc I knew I was made for it but 🤷🏻♀️
Magic words? So he taught you to be a wiccan? Surely you realize this is not normal for a children's tv character... 😀
@@Allison_Wonderland. can't tell if you're serious or not but I was referring to "please" and "thank you." It turns out I never once made any connection with the term "magic" (in this context) to anything other than the intended meaning...manners & the ~magic~ of being polite.

@@britt.any_time No problem, it was my bad.
My daughter absolutely loved Barney. Her bedroom was full of Barney decor. I loved his “clean up” song as it helped to teach her that cleaning up afterwards was something that could also be ‘fun.’ All of his “silly” songs, such as “7 days in a week” only helped to teach young kids helpful things. I can’t imagine why anyone would think the show itself was bad for kids to watch. Now lets talk about those 4 odd Telly-tubbies or whatever they were called. They didn’t speak, just rolled around and did a lot of mumbling.
Im a grown 36yo woman and every year I sing that Fall song “it’s the season after summer, it’s before the winter, it’s the fall, it’s the fall, its the fall!” lol.
The teletubbies are directly responsible for my niece being behind other kids in her speech milestones. I hate those things! Needless to say my son didn't watch that rubbish.
My mother tried to swerve my brother off the Teletubbies because she was worried that the noises as opposed to speech would be delaying to kids.
I gotta say, I didn’t expect a video analysing barney the dinosaur to require the “I’m not diagnosing anyone in this video” disclaimer, yet here I am laughing my ass off for some reason 30 seconds in 🤣
Would Barney sue? 🤔
Same 🤣
I was waiting for him to rate barney on his scale of openness to new experience.
"Barney loved everyone...and didn't seem to keen on background checks"! LOL!
My children loved Barney and the show. We also went to several live shows. The anti Barney movement is a product of sick individuals who need psychological help.
It's sad that such a family friendly wholesome entertainment could be a target of maladjusted individuals.
We don't need plot points for preschoolers.
Exactly.
Agreed.
I type "anti barney" into Google and it auto-completes to "anti barney *humor."* This being the very first option listed.
So, there's the actual answer. "Protests" against Barney are very deliberately nonsensical and absurd, as humor has a tendency of being. There aren't many jokes out there (except the mean-spirited ones that mock other people) that wouldn't be the words of a crazy person if said in earnest.
Absolutely
I agree 100%. But it's ok to have children entertained by grown men dressed as clownish female prostitutes who call themselves drag queens to talk about how you can be any gender you want???!! God help us!
Gonna go out on a limb here and guess Dr. Grande was exposed to excessive amounts of Barney when his kids were little.
Me too.

“Mercifully cancelled.” 😂 Your humor alone has helped with my depression more than my own therapist Dr. Grande. ☺️😎
I was born in Germany and spent the first 13 years of my life there. We had many American shows there, we also had our own version of Sesame street, but we did not have Barney. Then in 1997, when I was 13, my family moved to Canada, and one of the first things I noticed at school is that everyone seemed to have a Barney trauma. I was also taught the song "I love you, you love me, Barney gave me HIV" . As a dinosaur lover myself I could never understand what people have against Barney. I started wathcing the show, just to figure out what exactly the issue is.
Yes, Barney can, like any other dinosaur, be annoying but he has a good heart. And when people think that a kid's show is too simplistic, there is a really easy way of dealing with that: Let your kids watch one or two episodes now and then, and use the rest of the time to actually do something with your children that teaches them something. I seriously hate people who first abuse a TV show as a fulltime babysitter, and then later on, when they have kids with impaired language and social skills, who do not know how to tie their own laces, put the blame on the show characters.
If Barney ever needs a place to stay, he can come here and live with my husband and me. We have a large collection of dinosaur stuffies, and Barney would fit in wonderfully. 💜
And the story of the litte girl who thought Barney got hurt, and cried for two days until she said what happened -That's heartbreaking. 😿
What a sweet comment! i never watched Barney because I was 24 years old in 1992, but anything nice and innocent is good to me.

Barney did an episode about stranger danger that really got the point across to kids at a younger level. Personally, I connected with Barney because the kids and the school seemed a lot like mine.
My daughter especially loved Barney. She had a Barney yellow room with a Barney border and all the accoutrements, like bedding etc... We sang the I love you song constantly and still to this day! All my kids laugh about Barney. We even have my daughters Barney in safe quarters.
He doesn’t look creepy to me. Never did.
What about Mr Blobby?
Barney was a great show for my adult children when they were growing up. It reinforced good manners, kindness and good citizenship. Just my opinion.
And you're right. The show was very positive and helped kids everywhere💜
I was an adult with friends who had little children when Barney was on the go. They all loved him, he was educational, kind and friendly. You may be right that all that kindness was unrealistic in comparison to life. But they were children, plenty of time for them to find out life's harsh realities when they got older. I actually liked Barney myself.
There WAS educational value in the Barney episodes my daughter and I watched. I was an elementary school teacher and think they taught a lot of valuable lessons.
I used to teach pre k- 4 and Im thinking the same thing. Barney hit on a lot of areas of childhood development. That makes sense seeing as the creator also had her Bachelor’s in Ed
Dr. Grande gets a lot of things wrong. He probably didn't actually watch any episodes, or if he did he ignored any educational value. His analysis was off on this one, Barney was a good little show for kids.
“Human size dinosaur with a PERMANENT creepy smile” Dr Grande stop im dynnn 🤣
Dr Grande and his dry humor. I love this man lol! Another great video
I hope Dr. Grande is using hyperbole in analyzing this. Barney carried a good message for preschoolers and was harmless.
Barney was a good friend on television for a toddler in the 1990's. In grade school, anti-Barney humor was sort of a social thing, for kids to show each other that they'd outgrown 'baby stuff.' I think Fred Rogers, Sesame Street, and Arthur were probably better for children in the long-term, but Barney was very much meant for very young children.
My kids had limited TV/video time. A half hour video was perfect for “rest time” for my two 3-4 year olds. I liked the Barney videos because they sang traditional songs kids don’t hear much anymore. Once in kindergarten, NO children I knew liked Barney anymore. My children learned problem solving, socialization etc. from their parents and the rest of real life. If children are being hypnotized by any TV character, it’s the parents’ fault, not the show.
It's both. That's like saying the guy offering free candy out of the back of his van isn't at fault. It's always the same with people.
I grew up with The Electric Company, Sesame Street (the song we all live in a capital I still haunts me) and Mr Rogers. Barney was annoying but pales in comparison to the Teletubbies. I'd love to see those creepy little things analyzed. 😳
yip yip yip yip yip yip yip yip yip yip yip...
U said it,telletubies are the mindless annoying garbage anyone can show a human being, thank God my kids never liked them, nor were they drawn to barney as well,my first son loved Elmo and it wasnt a problem
Teletubbies was the worst.
Teletubbies got me thru the biological clock.
Calliou is another contender for worst kids show
I was absolutely obsessed with Barney as a kid, I instinctively knew it was great there was such an innocent and friendly TV character for us kids born in the early 90s. Would love to see how the people protesting Barney would deal with what modern kids consume for entertainment.
I type "anti barney" into Google and autocomplete adds "humor" as the first option. That's what these "protests" are, for the most part. The fact that people (who, for whatever reason, think this is serious) are joking in this comments section is, itself, a testament to this being humor.
That was unexpected. This video made me feel sorry for Barney.
Barnie didnt make me crazy. The endless marketing of Barnie and listening to his video tape on loop in my entry-level JCPenny’s retail job in the children’s clothing department made me crazy.
FINALLY! Someone with the courage to take on Barney the Dinosaur!
Big dinosaur has been keeping these secrets for too long.
He's done Dahmer, Ramirez, Wayne Gacy, BTK, Ridgway... Barney's time would come sooner or later.
It’s about time! Barney’s been getting away with his bullshit for far to long.
DeShawn - Wow! That is some bad company!
I hope Dr. G prepared himself before posting this video. PBS will be sending out their hit teams any minute now.
I loved Barney when I was a kid in the 90s. He even taught us the song in Spanish; something that amazed my parents at the time. I also remember vividly that if you get lost in the woods, you are supposed to stay in one spot and blow a whistle. As I got older, I saw the hate from other kids and it actually kinda broke my little heart.
Yes I recall the kids singing Des Coloures.
From age 2 to 7 every birthday party of Barney themed for me. I loved this show so much I cant describe with words how much it meant to me growing up.

Barney is beautiful Dr.Grande.😅 He & friends taught great morals. It's sad that the creator had so much success with the show and not family.
My dad once rented a Barney costume and I helped him match Barney's voice and behaviors by watching recordings of the show with him when I was twelve or so. One of my mom's coworker had a son who got horrible second degree burns on most of his body as a toddler by crawling on the counter and turning on the hot water as he fell into a sink (if my memory serves me correctly).
There was a party for him coming home from the hospital and he liked Barney. So my dad put the costume on, we drove over to house and he went in and did his Barney act, which the kid supposedly enjoyed.
When my dad got back in the car a few minutes later, he took off the head before getting because it barely fit in the car and he could barely see (the car was out of view of the party house). Unfortunately, word got out in the neighborhood that Barney was around in those few minutes, so there were a few groups of young kids standing outside other houses looking for him. As soon as the head came off one started crying and another yelled "you killed Barney" for some reason. My mom then floored it out of there.
Don't know why I'm writing this. I miss my dad and I guess the point is Barney memories are always weird. Made magic for the kids at the party and killed it for the others. I always hated costume characters like Mickey and Big Bird. I knew enough that they weren't real, but not enough to know that there was a person in there. I thought they were robots and was terrified of them until I was three or four I guess.
_"I thought they were robots and was terrified of them until I was three or four I guess."_ I like your version of the world better.
Wait. The toddler got 2nd degree burns all over his body by crawling across the kitchen counter, flipping on the hot water & falling in the sink?!?!
How did he get up on the countertop? I'm sorry but this does not seem like an accident. One of my good friends used to be s nurse in the burn trauma unit & she said too many times it's the monster parents who abuse their kids & purposefully burn them with scalding hot water. She said she had to quit the burn trauma unit because she worked at an inner city hospital & saw soo many cases of child abuse that it caused her to get PTSD from the horrific abuse she saw. She said the poor children & toddlers would have cigarette burns on their bodies from their animal "parents" putting cigarettes out on their bodies! The "parents" would always say "the child must have taken the cigarette from the ashtray & burned herself". Like yeah right. The children would have 9-11 clear burns from cigarettes being extinguished all over them!
And of course the most common abuse was placing their little babies & kids in the tub & would pour scalding & boiling water on them & then the "parent's" would say, "I didn't realize how hot the water was"
No wonder those inner city kids act so barbarically violent. They live through that & have nothing but rage & anger & then unfortunately they also have tons of kids because they use the welfare money from it for themselves & then those animals beat & burn their little babies.
There's so many nurses in the cities all over this country that see the same horrific abuse. That's why I'm pro abortion. 95% of abortions are from the inner city. That's s good thing. Now we need to sterilize all violent felons & child abusers & any woman who's guilty of such abuse must never be allowed to have any more children. Why is it that all these people in the inner city who can't handle parenthood both emotionally & financially have soo many kids? China has a 1 child per household limit on people of a certain income & America could definitely use a policy like that! A better idea would be to ban everyone with a sub 80 I.Q . from having children. That would ELIMINATE 95% of crime, abuse & poverty.
I'm such a naive utopian. Lol
That was a nice thing your dad did, good on him!
@@flaccidego4291 China hasn't had a limit on kids for October 26, 2015. Do you really think you are fooling anyone about who you mean when you say kids and people in the inner city. I see you think all those folks are on welfare too. You are disgusting.
This is hilarious!
"I hate you, you hate me, we're a dysfunctional family". That variant of Barney's song would inject some realism into the show. LOL!

Just how you casually said "other annoying dinosaur characters." 😆
At the height of Barneys popularity I was babysitting a neighbor's daughter who had Down Syndrome. Her mom warned me that she loved to watch Barney. Well, as soon as her mom was out the door it was time for Barney. After watching 3 or 4 episodes in a row I'd turn off the TV and try to engage her in another activity. It was always met with screaming fits and tears. After awhile I just gave up. We'd have it on in the backround all day. Let's just say it made for some very long days...
My daughter LOVED Barney! He was a positive and loving bestie that she could always turn to for a fun action packed dance along. She also loved to watch him at bedtime. I loved seeing her so happy. I could always buy her a new VHS 📼 to make her day. Affordable and positive. These people are insane.
Your deadpan delivery is the best! 🤣
When I was a kid, I adored Barney. I had a stuffed Barney I would sleep with. One night, I held Barney up over my head and something about the way he looked in the dark freaked me the f out and I screamed and threw him across the room. Never watched Barney or touched that toy again after that lol. The Barney trauma is real.
Dr. Grande doing an episode on Barney the Dinosaur? Life is complete now.
I think the Simpsons (back in their golden years) made the best parody; they simply had him singing “Two plus two is four!” over and over.
I related so much to that episode when Bart was put in special ed.
Surprised you didn’t mention about Barney being used as a method of torture in the early years of the war on terror. Barney songs were played on repeat at high levels to deprive prisoners of sleep and to cause stress. Is seems quite a strange omission ?
Maybe I received a little second-hand brain damage from my baby brother adoring the show, but I could repeat watch THIS video. That’s good satire!
They managed to lower the bar even further with Teletubbies. I’m sure a documentary on the inception and production of that monstrosity would be worth the watch.
You never seize to amaze me Dr Grande hahaha. I was obsessed with Barney as a young child. My mom would put on a tape and when the closing "I love you, you love me" song started I guess I would start crying until my mom put on a new episode. I'm not sure if it taught me anything, but boy did I love it.
That's like me getting sad when Peewee Herman would fly off on his bike. lol
I was a preschool teacher in the mid 90s. All the kids loved Barney and although I found it kind of repetitive and boring, I must admit that it was a lot better than the stuff I used to watch as a kid which involved cartoon characters beating each other up and shooting each other (Warner Bros, etc). My own children never watched Barney or Warner Bros. They loved Adventures of Little Bear. I loved that too. It was kind and gentle but also good story lines accompanied by lovely music.
I have only positive feelings about this show. I have a child with disabilities who still adores Barney even now. I have covered and recovered his stuffed Barney . We have many videos and I’m on the lookout for more stuffed Barneys. Very sweet, innocent show.
I have an incredibly cute video of my 28yo daughter as a 16-month-old baby, in a pair of footie pajamas and Barney slippers, squealing "BAWNEEE" and grinning ear to ear as the show was starting. I got my fill of it though, I will tell you. But, I would recommend the doctor analyze Teletubbies. Those freak everybody out !
Thank you Dr. Grande for this incredibly funny and quite brilliant analysis of Barney the purple dinosaur. I can’t help but suppress a giggle or two 😉
My autistic son born in 91. now 31, in his formative years he would just explode if he saw Barney on TV. He carried that character in his psyche for at least a decade and literally feared and hated it. He never had any comparative issue. Really unusual.
God bless him…and you, as well
Interesting...my youngest brother who is autistic was extremely freaked out by the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer song as a child.
My autistic son loved Barney. My daughter would react to Sesame Street the way your son did to Barney. She would scream in fear and cry if she caught a glimpse of Sesame Street….and hated the Count the worst. She loved Barney though. It’s strange because the very first time of seeing Sesame Street just for a few seconds sent her into such a meltdown and we never understood why. She had no trouble watching the Muppet Show either….just Sesame Street.
Then change the channel instead of whining about it
@@klown463 I was simply stating how my autistic child had issue with a particular character. I don’t think I was whining, the subject was what it was and that’s all.
Another Gem, Doc. ps i loved the shot of your closet (loud shirt collection) from another of your posts! my niece took her barney to college with her and saw him in person (dinosaur) in her youth. She seems to only be mildly damaged.
OMG it was just a light hearted show for toddlers. Not every show has to teach and deal with issues in life. Geezus! Barney taught about safety (buckling seat belts) as one example. The theme song was a sweet song and one that I sang to my toddler/young child years ago. My son loved the show as did I his mother an adult. It was a good show.
We didn’t watch Barney daily but some days I would put it on. The best part was the clean up song. Teaching the kids: you can play but when you are done, you all get together and clean up your mess.
The show I thought was bad was “caillou” omg my kids would be whiny for days after watching one episode! 😂
Can you do like a specia halloween month? like where you analyze horror movie villains, or discuss cases that have a paranormal element?
That’s a great idea
I'm thinking this IS his Halloween special... Barney, the creepy purple dinosaur. Next, maybe he could analyze why those inflatable T-Rex costumes are so popular.
@@EXROBOWIDOW lol maybe.
I loved Barney, he reminded me of an old neighbor who was proud of his new chompers and had the same smile.
We appreciated the show, for our youngest daughter. Barney and his friends showed kindness, compassion and respect to each other. Great lessons for preschoolers, IMHO
Didn't know Barney slander and opposition was even a thing. You learn something new everyday. Lol
I remember my niece was only 1 year old at the time. Not even 2 yet. The first grandchild of our family. All the sudden she could sing her ABCs and name off all the letters. Our whole family were surprised and all my siblings were wondering who taught her, her ABCs. Although we all want to take credit, none of us could make that claim. A few days later we saw her watching Barney and happily singing her ABCs along. Yeah she often watch Barney and looks like he’s the one who taught her. Barney teaches kids a lot of good things such as shapes, color, friendship, loving one another, giving and so forth. Twisting the fundamental message is wrong and just down right twisted. I love listening to Dr. Grande and his analysis but why has he gear off of murderers and offenders and attacking comedians such as Trevor Noah and other none criminals?
I agree. It's confusing when people change their content up so quick...
I agree! I really enjoyed his “scientific based analysis” but he’s gotten so mean about celebrities for no reason. He bashes EVERYTHING! No one has any talent, apparently. A well know actor, nope sucks! A comedian who says he’s leaving their show, nope! They were fired for low ratings because he sucked. A relatively successful singer, nope.. Sucks!
@@rosesantos9438 It's probably because he is keeping up with the cultural zeitgeist that he talks about these inane people who seek fame. He is also allowed to have an opinion on Barney and Amber Heard and Trevor Noah. If you don't like his content, then do not "Like/comment/subscribe". I don't understand people who don't like the channel but keep commenting, the interaction helps him rise up in the algorithm.
@@rosesantos9438 it no longer seems so unbiased to me.
@@imtired6104 well, like I said I “enjoyed” (past tense) his scientific based analysis which is why I view his content. I too, have a right to an opinion and at no point did I say he didn’t. I just agreed with another commenter who’s opinion I share. And just so you know, I did clicked the dislike button on the ones I don’t like. I exit out of the ones I don’t like, etc.
I’m even ok with your comment even though I think it’s unnecessary for you to tell me what I should or shouldn’t do.
You understanding why I commented sounds like a YOU problem. Hope you have a nice day!
I think people were jealous that such a simplistic idea became so popular and made so much money. Barney was EVERYWHERE. I never got into Barney I liked the Big Comfy Couch with Loonette and her doll Molly. To this day I still do the 10 second tidy. Not just in cleaning but for tasks I don't want to get started. Ha ha ha
I loved the big comfy couch too!😂
My son loved Barney. It was not the only show he watched so he got different perspectives from different shows. Not that he watched TV or movies all the time…
My kids never took to Barney. They were Thomas the Tank Engine fans. Dr. Grande: Can you review Thomas? This video was super interesting. I never thought there might be dysfunction behind the Barney show! 🙂 🦕
I loved watching Barney growing up. Baby Bop was my favorite character and I loved when they sang Mr. Knickerbocker, lol.
My uncle heard my cousin singing that, and thought he was singing something racist. lol

I worked at a law firm in Seattle in the 90s. Someone was suing Barny for the use of song rights in theme for the show. Was always funny to see then name of the plaintiffs..e.g. jones, smith, brown et all vs Barny The Big Purple Dinosaur. I'd pick up documents at the firm and drop them off at the public TV station at Seattle Center.
Hilarious! I laughed so hard my husband came checking on me.
Atomic boredom! That's funny. Excellent analysis as usual, Dr. Grande.
Dude, your next deep dive should be about Caillou 😂😂😂😂
Ugh that kid is so whiney and annoying lol Everytime I would babysit my niece I would refuse to have him on TV for even a minute bc I couldn't stand his voice 😂😂
@@silentservant_ 😆🤣😆

I would love to see your take on the recent Alex Jones trials at a future point in time. Your commentary is very well done and thank you for what you do.
When you said that the premise was Barney, a stuffed toy, would come to life and tell children he loved them, I thought of this in a horror context and began laughing.
Barney was notorious for never paying his own bar tab. "Can't reach my wallet!", he would say, triggering sympathy over his pathetically short arms.
🤣😂
Love your channel Dr. Grande! You never cease to surprise and delight :)
I never liked Barney, but my 3 younger sisters loved him, and for Halloween all 3 wanted to dress up as Baby Bop, my mother went along with it, I had never seen them so happy. Barney was good for little kids.
Barney was the best babysitter ever so I could get my cleaning done. Don't throw shade at Barney!
“I love you, you hate me”… too good of a name not to make a documentary out of it.
It doesn't matter, because millions of tykes loved Barney, and Barney loved them. I am hoping that you can analyze the Teletubbies next. I remember my toddler son watching that show with fascination, while I zoned out exhausted on the couch, wondering if the producers were having psychedelic flashbacks.
I was constantly babysitting throughout the 90s. Barney and Teletubbies were enough to drive you crazy!😂 I was so happy when I discovered Veggie Tales and I introduced to every parent I babysat for!😂 I had never heard about this story surrounding it. I hate to think of the nefarious things surrounding Teletubbies…that’s got to be dark!😳😆
Lol same here. I agree with every word.
Veggie Tales were fine until the episode of the chronic liar, a talking daisy. It lied and lied and then SPLAT! ....it's head exploded. I was an adult watching this, and I was horrified that the narrator calmly taught the children that that's what could happen to someone who lies all the time. What?
@@betsybarnicle8016 Well, in a way that IS what happens to someone who lies all the time. Our brains are supposed to be absorbing, analyzing, and processing, and sharing facts and truth. Lies completely disrupt what the mind is supposed to be doing, in effect "blowing up" the mind and morals. However, the idea about the nose growing longer with each lie is... a lie.
@@EXROBOWIDOW The head exploding was violent and horrible. It died by head explosion. Not a lesson for children. Don't even try to excuse it sideways.
@@betsybarnicle8016 I never thought of it like that.
Here's some trivia for you. Many of the crew that worked on Walker Texas Ranger also worked on Barney and Wishbone since they were all filmed in the Dallas area.
I loved Wishbone. Great memories.
I was a Walker Texas Ranger fan myself
I love the comparison between the dangers of Godzilla's atomic plasma breath vs the societal risks of Barney's breath of repetitive nonsense.
😂😂
I used to like to pit my Godzilla action figure against my Barney doll. My dud Big G kicked Barney's ass everytime and save my home town!
Thanks Dr Grande, the bit with Gozilla's atomic breath being compared to Barney's words took me out!😂 Next stop should be the infamous Caillou! 🙈
The video I didn’t know I needed today. It’s really beautiful, the work you do here Doc. Grateful is an understatement.
