Is everyone just gonna forget that in the book, Tom (I think it was Tom) had a daughter who killed herself? I dunno but I thought it was a kind of important part of the book as far as character development and such goes.
Yeah like and then when he came back after scavenging he brought kids clothes for Malorie and Olympia's children, Tom being a father and having lost his child was an important character detail, that was why he was a leader, and why he was sympathetic to people and determined to have the housemates survive; but then in the movie he's pretty much just there for Sandra Bullock to steamroll over
oh yeah, it was so sad too. he was wrecked because he didnt know if it was the madness that took her, or that she actually decided that the life wasnt worth living anymore. a really dark thought for a child to have.
I watched the movie and than read the book and I liked both but prefer the book a little more. The movie did some things better than the book (like the woods scenes and stuff like that) but the book was just great. The characters were much better in the book that when they all died I felt it more than I expected and I didn’t as much in the movie (if that makes any sense). I was rooting for them even tho I knew what was going to happen. What happen to them in the book was so dark and horrifying that it made the movie look less sad in comparison. My heart went out for the main character in the book more and I enjoyed her more than the movie version. As for the ending, I don’t know which one I prefer. Both were similar and different for many reason.
I think many people who said they didn’t like the movie are so used to loving movies where they show the “horror” or “creature” whatever it is. This movie wasn’t like that and it’s truly what made it terrifying because it leaves it all up to the imagination and not many people these days appreciate suspense and horror that uses your imagination but instead just shows you the horror and that’s that. I could be wrong it’s just an observation and an opinion and i don’t mean it to be rude.
I didnt have an issue with not seeing the monster but I had an issue not understanding what it was actually capable of. It could lift a car but it couldn't open the door. It could speak or get kn to your mind but on only at the end? Looking thoroughly the holes of fabric was safe but not at a tv screen? Gary could trick the birds at the beginning of being allowed in the house but birds are still seen as "monster sniffers"??? The sanctuary had open ceilings? That is what got me.
Glue Guns & Roses i think a lot of your questions are very valid but to me i guess that’s what made it more terrifying. Also not understanding how it works but there needs to be a level of reason and understanding. Background i guess.
No I thought that was a cool and unique thing I didn’t like it cause there was ZERO character development for hardly ANY of the characters and the movie moved way to quick and didn’t explore things it should have.
Huh? No it sucked because Sandra bullock was miscast, the writing, effects, and editing were shit. Yeah it was intense. But it was not a memorable movie. At all.
being chased by an unknown invisible entity... i have experienced that once, so i can say that the real pressure of being chased by those unseen monsters in this franchise is terrifying indeed, even more so when they can actually compel you to open your eyes & take a look. i've never seen this movie or read the book, but the concept seems neat. anyway, i've had enough of jumpscare 'horror' movies, so this might be interesting.
This movie was amazing I watched it 3 times, but since most comments are negative, why watch it? This movie was good and I actually liked the ending. I understand why it was super hype.
I loved the plot twist where don was hiding Gary in the hose and I was so disappointed it wasn’t in the movie. Also, the fact that animals can go mad was pretty important soooo
when I watched the movie, I thought was a little weird that Tom never gave names to the kids... even if Malorie don't want to, seems like something he would do... but, since even the two kids refer to them themselves as "boy" and "girl", I guess he never did named them... make more sense in the book, since is just Malorie and the kids after the incident in the house
Yeah like I feel like with Tom there he would have insisted the kids have names and they would have worked that out when the kids were still newborns, instead of us seeing it when they're older...
For me, the reason I liked the book more was the fact that Gary was never killed - he just left. It created the sense of paranoia for Malorie and the reader, never knowing if he was near or not, never knowing if he would return
I just finished reading the book yesterday and I spent about a week on it, though some people might get through it even faster than that. I think the biggest difference that wasn't noted for me... The children. In the movie they were helpless little beings. But in the book, she trained them for 4 years to only use their sense of hearing. Going to different rooms and making noises, the difference between crushing a leaf vs stepping on it... She trained the kids and once slapped a child for getting the wrong answer. To me that showed her desire to live but also her need for the kids since her hearing wasnt as good because she used all her senses her whole life where the kids used only hearing.
actually, gary confirmed that there was in fact «monsters» in the book. He told malorie that the streets outside the house are full of creatures walking by, and that was the reason why he infiltrated their house in the first place.
I'd like to hear why you people didn't enjoy the picture. Rather than dismissing it with one or two words, elaborate on your stance. Otherwise, your opinion is invalid.
Matt C Well, it's not that I didn't enjoy it, it's just that I found it mediocre and undeserving of it's sudden boom in popularity. For one the weird jumping between two time lines killed any suspense or any real need for attachment for the new characters introduced. It's like the entire part where it showed the past was useless because we know what inevitably happens. If it just started well from the start it would've improved. The movie even introduces a lot of interesting points but doesn't elaborate on them which I found kinda irritating, so the world building just wasn't really great. "Here's a really potentially interesting world but we won't tell you anything about it". The only character arc to be had was Mal's but hers just wasn't as drastic as it could've been for being the focus of the movie(in the book it was insanely more drastic I believe). The movie only intrigued me because I wanted to see how people would die. There's more to it but I can't really explain every little thing I didn't like otherwise this comment would be 5 minutes long. My view on the movie has nothing to do with me thinking 'it was a horror movie even though it was a self-actualization' (btw a horror movie can have a character that self-actualizes so your original comment is redundant)
Theory about the monsters time!!! So I think depending on the person they see something they long for or absolutely hate and cry over. Like Malorie’s sister for example, She cried even though Malorie states she was the most cheerful person she never cried. Douglas’s wife looked and said “Hey mom what are you doing here” She longed for her mom. Malorie longed for her sister her friends, everyone. She managed to fight though, good for her. Welp that ends my theory! Hope you liked it :)

You really think we hate everything that goes mainstream? The movie was good but was very different from the book. If you liked the film, please read the book, it would only make you more invested and you would be able to read the sequel.
did you pay attention in first scene with Mallory and her sister. She discuss that. She will never have a emotional connection with her own child. Which she and her sister said that was the fault of their parents. So, During the events, Mallory didnt want a connection, in cause the children died, she would not suffer. Look how she was more harsh with the girl, that was not of her blood. And later on, when Mallory found that, that the girl was afraid of her... Mallory understood that she was doing the same thing, that her parents were. Pushing her kids away, and hurting them, to not allow to be hurt. The reason Mallory give the name in the sanctuary, was, because now, they were safe. She acknowledge them, as hers. The Boy and the Girl, now were her kids, children... were safe... and now they are apart of her.... emotional connection is established. Thats why she name them
I have not watched the movie. I don’t think I will see it either. Just seeing this list was a roller coaster ride of emotion. Number 1 made me tear up. I am a huge punk.
I only watched it today and loved it. I think the ‘hype’ and memes may have ruined it for people. I just wish people would go in with their OWN expectations and enjoy it for what it’s for.
Ha, for those of you who didn't even know that there was a book. You'll be mindblown to know that there's actually a direct sequel that just came out. I'm picking it up tomorrow. The first book was amazing, can't wait to see where the next part goes.
Damn this movie showed how much people love their kids. And this gave me an even bigger emotional attachment to all the little kids in my life that I care of.
Having seen the movie and read the book - the movie was better. The book moved too slowly and the part with the dogs sometimes being affected, but not always, didn't make any sense.
Omg it would’ve been so cool if everyone was killing each other while the two woman gave birth! They could’ve just had Tom survive it and be all affected that he had to kill his friends to survive. They also should’ve kept the eye gouging.
I enjoyed how I didn't know who her kid was til the end, when she said one would have to look and the boy said he would and she said no....it made those scenes more tense nor knowing.
Olympia told her she was having a girl and wanted to name her after a Disney princess. So we actually did know if you were paying attention you just missed it.
Maybe... just maybe I'll give the book a shot, now that I know one exists, but definitely not based on the merit of the movie I just finished watching. Jeez, what a stinker. Figures that Douglas, the only character I enjoyed in the movie, was an add-on. They sure had incredible homing skills arriving at destinations whilst stumbling around blind folded... or driving for that matter.
The book is seriously something else and way more terrifying than the movie could be. It's also a short read too and far more interesting with character development like Tom and Gary.
In the movie don is based off on Douglas in the book and I think it’s funny how in the movie everyone should have just listen to Don while in the book it’s basically Douglas fault Gary killed everyone except for Mallory and the kids
i read the book before watching this movie, and i was SO dissatisfied and disappointed after seeing the wreck that was the movie. everything with gary was so off, and it wasn’t a crazy twist like it was in the book. everything about the movie was just so fast paced, and they managed to make it all so much less scary than it was in the book. should’ve stayed on paper imo, since you’re not really supposed to actually see anything yk
My mom and I didn’t like the fact that Mallory wasn’t motherly like we got that fact that she was trying to save their lives but she wasn’t motherly at all
Isabella Rendon but that’s what makes this movie beautiful because we get to see the character development in Mallory. She becomes their mother over time, and by the end, she truly loves the kids. It makes giving children names at the end so much more significant.
This reply is a little late but I’d highly recommend reading the book. It’s only about 250 pages, you can get it for free online and it’s just overall a really good story. In the film, Gary rips down the covers from the window and exposes the people in the room to seeing the creatures - Olympia sees one and jumps out the window to her death but Malorie manages to save her baby. It’s pretty much identical in the books, except a bit more gruesome because Gary describes (happily) how Olympia is hanging by her umbilical cord.
Hyper beast I recommend the audiobook. I got it on amazon. I haven’t yet seen the movie, but just finished the book. I think the book would be hard to adapt into a movie like they did, but would have been better for a short series as I feel that they had to change so much to make it a more engaging story, versus the long drawn out stresses and character developments expressed in the book
also I think maraly. looked idk it's just this videos thumbnail is maraly. with red eyes and a bloody head, which would indicate that in the book she looks not to mention that the thumbnail is maraly standing outside
THEROY: Okay so the monster feeds off yours biggest fears. So if you look at the monster, you see your biggest fears. Like, if your biggest fear is losing a loved one, you’ll see that?
The only thing I liked better the movie over the book was the use of the birds. The book shouldn't be called birdbox considering the actual birds play such a small role in the book.
I hate that people analyzed this movie from a horror perspective when the entire thing was just an allegory for motherhood. Who cares what the monsters looked like? The point was there was a monster, a very real but very mysterious danger that she couldn't protect her children from.
honestly hungry no but in the book he died along with everyone else. In the movie they kept him around for another five years so he can raise the kids and be the love interest and stuff. (It’s in the video if you watch it)

You really think we hate everything that goes mainstream? The movie was good but was very different from the book. If you liked the film, please read the book, it would only make you more invested and you would be able to read the sequel.
Malorie gets attacked by wolves. Malorie looks for the fork in the river instead of her kids almost looking at the rapids.
I couldn’t believe MGK was in it! Loved the book and movie.
Rn Tn well lets be honest, he's pretty much killed his career...
why is this on msmojo and not the main channel?
Nick Powell probably because it’s about a mother batteling to save her kids or some shit. Only other women would be bothered about that, after all.
I’ll never understand why it took so long for the audience to know the kids’ names: I had to hear them be called “boy & girl” for 2 hrs
It was a form of Detachment for her she thought maybe they died so she didn't name them
did you pay attention in first scene with Mallory and her sister. Thats why she name them
is this a wooosh (referring to the two comment replies)? i 've never watched the movie nor read the book.
nope
I have not watched the movie. I don’t think I will see it either. Just seeing this list was a roller coaster ride of emotion. Number 1 made me tear up.
I am a huge punk.
if sarah paulson was alive longer the movie would have been better PERIODT
*period
Esai Mauricio i can spell it how i want thank you
Esai Mauricio PERIODT! It’s meant to be spelt like that when you are using it in a funny sense. Don’t be a dick.
@@roidetesreves2298 PERIODTTTTTT!!!!
Periodt
I only watched it today and loved it. I think the ‘hype’ and memes may have ruined it for people. I just wish people would go in with their OWN expectations and enjoy it for what it’s for.
Manga vs Netflix adaptation
Ha, for those of you who didn't even know that there was a book. You'll be mindblown to know that there's actually a direct sequel that just came out. I'm picking it up tomorrow. The first book was amazing, can't wait to see where the next part goes.
The book is awesome. I liked the movie too.
Damn this movie showed how much people love their kids. And this gave me an even bigger emotional attachment to all the little kids in my life that I care of.
Cool showing the narrator, I like that little extra bit of info
Friend of mine put it on and I wasn’t sure it was for me but I really enjoyed it..
Am I the only one who died laughing at the way he said "give me the kids" 🤣
Kiara Grate he was like whining “GiVe mE thE kIds “ like a kid.
Aye my fingers sore for me furiously taping on this video but it's all gucci
Please don't say Gucci.
It's Gen z slang but cut it out
because* of* tapping*
Mallory and Shannon her sister are Way younger, early 20's in the book. Gary survives the book, I am reading the sequel book Mallory, now.
early squad where u at👑
Having seen the movie and read the book - the movie was better. The book moved too slowly and the part with the dogs sometimes being affected, but not always, didn't make any sense.
I love your voice
At 1:53, WHO ARE THOSE PEOPLE LOL
If you're talking about the two blond people, they ran off at the start to save their kids
Very very great list I like it a lot and a lot of fun too I what to see this one
Maybe... just maybe I'll give the book a shot, now that I know one exists, but definitely not based on the merit of the movie I just finished watching.
This is a beautiful video 👋👋👋
Wait, her name is olympia and not Olivia!!
bird box made me cry hysterically, do i need to take a pregnancy test? lol
Just finished the book, it was so much better.
In the movie don is based off on Douglas in the book and I think it’s funny how in the movie everyone should have just listen to Don while in the book it’s basically Douglas fault Gary killed everyone except for Mallory and the kids
So good 😊
Lucy, Charlie and Greg were in the novel but were characters that were never encountered and died
i read the book before watching this movie, and i was SO dissatisfied and disappointed after seeing the wreck that was the movie. everything with gary was so off, and it wasn’t a crazy twist like it was in the book. everything about the movie was just so fast paced, and they managed to make it all so much less scary than it was in the book. should’ve stayed on paper imo, since you’re not really supposed to actually see anything yk
This is an exact copy of The Happening. Down to the last detail. Personally, I thought The Happening was better. More blood and guts.
That’s the whole fucking point dumbass
Lola Pulkin Damn chill don’t be a bitch
I didn’t know there was a book until today. Can someone please explain Olympia’s death in the book vs the movie?
This reply is a little late but I’d highly recommend reading the book. It’s only about 250 pages, you can get it for free online and it’s just overall a really good story. In the film, Gary rips down the covers from the window and exposes the people in the room to seeing the creatures - Olympia sees one and jumps out the window to her death but Malorie manages to save her baby. It’s pretty much identical in the books, except a bit more gruesome because Gary describes (happily) how Olympia is hanging by her umbilical cord.
Pause at 1:52 who is that guy with the khakis and the light blue shirt and the dark blue sweater? Never remembered him being in the movie
Are the monsters Lovecraftin from both sources?
I love this movie!
If DOOMGUY looked at it, he would’ve affected it.
Quick question what’s with all the hype for this movie
Where can I find the book
Hyper beast I recommend the audiobook. I got it on amazon. I haven’t yet seen the movie, but just finished the book. I think the book would be hard to adapt into a movie like they did, but would have been better for a short series as I feel that they had to change so much to make it a more engaging story, versus the long drawn out stresses and character developments expressed in the book
Who else is annoyed they used Gary to kill off the other side characters because they was running out off time?
Malorie: 🔪 👁
also I think maraly. looked idk it's just this videos thumbnail is maraly. with red eyes and a bloody head, which would indicate that in the book she looks not to mention that the thumbnail is maraly standing outside
THEROY:
Okay so the monster feeds off yours biggest fears. So if you look at the monster, you see your biggest fears. Like, if your biggest fear is losing a loved one, you’ll see that?
Did Girl even get named “Ariel” or “Jasmine” like Olympia wanted? Seriously. Why wasn’t she named the Disney Princess name.
am i the only one that thinks girl looks exactly like olympia like they ant related in real life lol
So if, in the movie, not sure if it was in the book, the children care support worker wasn't there, would they still be called Boy and Girl?
Douglas was the only one with some sense. Gary was the f*ck boy. Tom was the Hero of the movie.
Sounds like the book is better, what a surprise!
I NEED TO READ THAT BOOK😣😯🤓
Wait...THERE'S A BOOK?!
Do you guy's know why Tom was able to make that last shot to save the kids and Malorie?
Sarah H he just loves them enough and wanted to protect them so strongly that he was able to fight it for a second
@@cdann26 ah make sense. I was thinking that their fears gets to be so much that they can't even see straight.
@Beatrice DP Ah that's right she did. I think Malorie's sister did the same thing, she did it longer too. Thank you.
Quick question is there a Mr mojo?
I just realised 3 rhymes with malorie
Did anyone else cry when Olympia died?
Help who is that dude in the blue jacket at 1:52 i fee like I’m going crazy I don’t remember him at all.
He ran off with his wife at the start to save his kids
i haven’t read a book since i was like 9 and im 16😂
What an illiterate idiot
Jessie it came out in 2014 so no you weren’t 9
Lola are u dumb, i said i haven’t read A book since i was nine i never said anything about the birdbox book oml did u pass ur english gcse?
The only thing I liked better the movie over the book was the use of the birds. The book shouldn't be called birdbox considering the actual birds play such a small role in the book.
I love the book so much ..
Really!
I’ve never read the book so I prefer the movie
I hate that people analyzed this movie from a horror perspective when the entire thing was just an allegory for motherhood. Who cares what the monsters looked like? The point was there was a monster, a very real but very mysterious danger that she couldn't protect her children from.
I hated how they kept Tom alive. It was such a unique and non stereotypical ending and the movie ruined it by keeping him alive.
Allanah Duggan
But he died..
honestly hungry no but in the book he died along with everyone else. In the movie they kept him around for another five years so he can raise the kids and be the love interest and stuff. (It’s in the video if you watch it)
Allanah Duggan I know but I thought you meant that they kept him alive the whole movie haha
Wait if Shannon/Jessica was driving and seen something then shouldn't malorie have seen the same thing?
The novel does establish near the end of the that they are creatures. At least that's what I took from it.
