Hey there, saw this message while passing through.
It's because in Japanese some words spelt out contain characters with individual meanings some of which you can use to guess what the whole word will mean.
Hence it's like calling a "washing machine" a "box" for him. Since at the very least when talking about a washing machine the name tells you what it may do. I'm still studying the language so I could be wrong.
He's talking about a laundry iron. They're literally just called "irons." Rarely do you call them "presses" or "electric irons." They are called irons, of course, because they used to be literally just heated slabs of iron. But Daigo is of course right in that the name is meaningless, more or less.
This really doesn't have anything to do with Japanese, but more with English having the name of the clothes iron just be "iron," which I'm sure anyone of any language can see is a little unassuming.
In Portuguese is the same, Ferro is both the mineral and the tool.
@@zackwyvern2582 Not exactly, the name is just a shortened version of the original name that was more detailed. As you said they were heated slabs of iron, that's why they were called flatirons. Because they were flat pieces of iron. It is pretty descriptive. Now we just refer to them as irons since everyone knows what your talking about so the longer name is unnecessary. Though flat iron now adays refers to a hair straight iron.

@@LukeyMia4 That wasn't hard to figure out. In these stream archives he's almost always using Guile and to a lesser extent Kage or Zeku. Ryu in 4 was good at almost everything which meant he could be used with any kind of playstyle. Now he's good at nothing and can only work with a reactionary gameplan and heavy reliance on hard reads. Capcom turned him into Kazuya Mishima with a Hadouken instead of an Electric.

Daigo is pretty funny, even when he's not trying to be. Because English is my first language, I never thought about iron being a weird name for the tool. It really doesn't make sense. For some reason, I was getting a Nisioisin vibe from that talk.
Well. Iron was heated and molded onto shape and irons heat up and mold clothing into a specific shape.
Originally it was an iron piece that you heated up over a flame and used that heat to take care of the wrinkles. People being lazy shorthanded the whole process into the verb "iron"

Daigo is so charasmatic, even charming and funny while facing down his imposter.
This was the first time I watched Daigo on stream talking and being able to understand what he's saying. He is very funny and witty and it was satisfying seeing him roast a guy for using his name asking why he was using dhalsim (a legitimate question because I cannot think of a single instance of him using sim).

I came for the matches, I stayed for his critical analysis of the word "iron."
A clothes iron gets its name for two qualities of the material it is made of.
Iron as a metal is rather heavy, if you make a smooth flat surface of it you can use it's weight to flatten and smoothen other things.
Iron also retains heat rather effectively, reason why it was used to brand things (like cattle).
People at some point discovered that they could dry and smoothen their clothes by heating a flat piece of iron and passing it over their clothes, hence the name "clothes iron".

So, they applied the hand tool with an heated iron surface onto the clothes, hence both the action "to iron" and name of the tool "iron" made sense centuries ago.

I guess someone should tell him that in English the names aren't given based on descriptive jobs (unless you are a communist), but rather on what they are-- example: An Iron is called an Iron because it is an Iron-press. A Washing Machine is called a Washing Machine because it is a machine whose primary job is to wash clothing. A telephone is a telephone cause it allows you to speaks from long distances.
