Can we just give props to Timothee Chalamet? His acting in this movie was insane even though everyone was already acting their asses off
What did it for me was his performance post water of life. He COMPLETELY changed character. It was impressive to watch.
Stilgar is the greatest mix between comic relief character and tragic character. We laughed so much we didn't see him go from wise, funny leader to one-dimensional religious fanatic until it was too late.

Its cause Denis changed stilgar’s character in the movie. In the book he’s still very loyal to Paul but was never portrayed as this crazed fanatic. He was like a wise uncle always giving Paul advice. His action’s are also still valid because at the end of the day paul is the fremen’s messiah and saved them.
@@Grimmreaper007I do think, even though comical, Stilgar here makes more sense. I’m not religious, but if a messiah came, proved themselves, then told me all of my worries will be gone soon. I’d be giddy, I don’t think I’d have an ounce of seriousness left because it’s not needed if everything will soon be fine.

Austin butler actually suggests that feyd should sound like his uncle(stellan skarsgard) because since he grew up with the Baron, the Baron would be a big influence on him in many ways
And how many other people can say "Oh, I'll just do Stellan Skarsgard's iconic, gravelly voice" and pull it off?

The fact Seb barely understood anything about this movies plot line but still loved it show how masterful Dennis is at his craft, truly makes movies that can appeal to those who love the lore and those who aren’t as closely following the story

when the credits started to roll in the theatres, i looked at my friends and went “i understand the Timothee hype now”
he was so good in this, and like Seb said, he’s just so believable! i won’t say that he wasn’t believable in the first Dune, i really liked his acting and choices in that one too, but once he drinks the water, he wakes up looking so differently immediately, i had goosebumps from then to the end of the movie!

Yes! Even though I know technically he's "turning to the dark side" he's so good at it I just adore him as all-powerful Paul even if I know I shouldn't.
Paul Atreides is the inspiration for Anakin Skywalker. In the next movie, Dune Messiah, Paul has a vision that will make everyone think of Anakin.
I was imagining it would have been dope if Anakin had visions of himself in the future as Darth Vader, ravaging planets with the Empire, kind of like Paul does seeing the coming wars. That would have been so sick!

@@yashjoseph3544 Kinda, in the Mortis arc, but not in the consistent way Paul does, or in the way Anakin has visions of Padmé dying (largely influenced by the Emperor's manipulation).
The only one I can remember is the vision of the falling moon. But not sure how that's related to Anakin. Am I missing something? 😅

Not sure how you missed it but chani's other name was from the prophecy, it meant desert spring, and it was written that the lisan al gaib would come back to life from desert spring tears. So it was literally exactly as written.
He missed a lot.
That guy has no sense of observation nor information retention whatsoever and missed things that were as clear as day, I was literally screaming at the screen in frustration... And I guess we'll never know if there's another Dune sequel... except that we absolutely do know... 🙄

It's a mixture of both I feel. Paul does genuinely love Chani and he is loyal to her (they have children together in the books, BUT in the books, Chani had less autonomy, she pretty much lived for Paul), Paul was happy to be embraced in the culture, but once the walls started closing in, he seen what he had to do in order to get to the emperor, so yes he did manipulate the fremen in a way. For the most part, everything Paul does, while it is a choice, in my opinion it's an illusion of choice because at the end of the day, his purpose is to be their messiah even though he doesn't really WANT to be it. He knows he has to do it in order to survive and to also keep his family and friends alive. He did end up helping the fremen just...in a different way LMAO
Paul was loyal to Chani. He could have had sex with any woman he wanted but he was faithful to Chani.

In a way, also, every choice he has made was about a promise he made to Chani - to keep her people safe and help them.

I love how he keeps talking about Paul, not being himself and being different now. Because it shows that the audience is set up for what’s to come in the last movie.
1. Austin Butler trained with an ex navy seal for like 4 months to get in shape for feyd-rautha's character.
2. Austin butler just had a bald cap on lol, they didnt shave his head or eyebrows
3. The creator of star wars actually took some of the plot from Frank Herbert's book and made star wars, that's why it's some similarities between the two. Dune is better imo

And if Dune: part 3 happens to be a banger, it will be the best movie trilogy we've gotten since LOTR, funnily enough. Though I still think it won't beat the LOTR trilogy in terms of quality of story or whatever.

God seeing the scene where Paul stands up on that sandworm and the music swells was incredible in the theater, easily the best movie this year so far!!

The only use of the weirding way in Part 2 (unless you count Paul pulling out a knife, flipping it around and stabbing Feyd with it while body-to-body 😅)
If you look, there are no footprints up the dune - so Jessica likely used the weirding way to get behind the Harkonnen.
You mention the timing of things a few times (Paul falling for Chani, eyes turning blue, progression of pregnancy). In the book, this portion of the story spans about 4-5 years. Paul's sister is already born by the end, and is basically a fully matured adult, as a toddler. That would have obviously been pretty hard to film. Denis Villeneuve also said his decision to shorten the time span was in order to keep the desire for revenge fresh in the minds of the characters. It's harder to sell a revenge story if Paul's had half a decade to grieve. There's some other minor changes to the story as a consequence of the decision to shorten it for the movie. I won't spoil them. Highly recommend reading the books!

@@lucifermorningstar4500 I've read the books several times and I could have sworn Alia is about 4 years old at the end of the first book (i.e. the end of Dune: Part 2, the movie). However, looking back at it, a certain character she meets at the end of the book *thinks* she's 4, but I don't think it actually states she's 4. According to the Dune fandom Wiki (don't go searching for this site if you don't want spoilers!), the events of the first movie span about half a year, from January 10191 to summer/early fall, and the events of the second movie span from approximately October 10191 to December 10193, which would make Alia 2 years old when Paul took the throne.
So to answer your question, Dune 2 (the movie) covers a period of about 2 years 3 months in the book, but it's obviously shortened in the movie because Alia isn't born by the end.

The fact that I left the theatre with the feeling of not knowing who Paul is anymore, speaks to the dramatic shifts the film pulled off so well
The scenes on Giedi prime were shot in infrared...that's not a digital effect, and it wasn't shot in black-and-white.
The star of Giedi Prime is "black" because it doesn't emit any visible light. Normally that would mean the planet would be completely dark at all times to anyone who can't see in infrared, but presumably something about the atmosphere does something to it that causes everything to reflect into visible wavelengths again.
I just assume the Harkonnens have been modified enough (the chemicals in their body) that allows them to see infared, and those shots being in infared is basically just to showcase what they see. Just my theory though
Denis said that the sun "sucks out colour" which you can see in film. The baron floating out to the balcony you can see the colour sucked out as he gets outside, but most notably the bene geseritt witches go from black robes to white as they step outside

this is all just stuff Denis made up, it is NOT canon from the books. The oil everywhere, THAT is the defining characteristic of Giedi Prime. Also, Harkonnens were never bald.

33:00 no one knew it! Jessica’s background was a secret because she was part of a secret plan. She was meant to have a female child with Leto but fell in love and decided to give him a son. That is why Margot got pregnant by Elvis, to do what Jessica did not, creat a specific girl that in the future will have a child with a chosen boy.
Viewing Paul's worm-riding scene in the cinema was honestly one of the most intensely synesthetic things I have ever experienced in my 40 years on this planet.
Toward the very end, after Chaini leaves and Stilgar asks Paul for his orders and Paul solemnly responds, "Lead them to paradise." I dunno why, the way he delivered the line, the score, all of it - it gives me chills every time i watch that scene. This movie is so effin brilliant
Because with those four words, Paul is resigning himself to the fact that trillions of people are going to die in a galaxy-wide jihad, and there's nothing he can do to stop it, super-powers or not. People SHOULD get chills at that revelation.

The whole two movies, but especially part two, are a deconstruction of the hero's journey. We r not seeing Paul turn into a hero. We're seeing him turn into a villain. This is best shown with how the start of part 2 is the harkonnens burning the atreides bodies, and the ending has the fremen/atreides doing the exact same thing.

It’s still crazy seeing people defend Paul though. This was way more obvious that Paul isn’t good than the book did, and still, see lots of people missing it

I've never been a huge Sci-fi fan but Dune Part 1 was amazing, and Dune Part 2 became possibly one of my favorite movies!

They were actually shot in Infra-Red
Because their Sun is a „Black-Star“ that doesn’t reveal color but kills it!

Great reaction. Dune was written in the early 1960's. It came before most of the movies and shows we consider classics. Among the most honored Fantasy and Sci-Fi books of the 20th Century. Only Lord of the Rings and Foundation came before Dune. I have one issue. You keep bringing up other movies and shows and say that Dune is reminding you of them. Remember.... Really remember. Dune was written first. It was a huge success. So many people used its themes and ideas to create other stories.... Like Star Wars. Mad Max. Game of Thrones. Ect.

there is a Dune: Part 3 coming, these first two movies are each one half of the first movie, while Part 3 will be the second book.
if they truly wanted they have material for many years to come given that there are a total of 15 books/novels in the Dune universe, along with thousands of pages with drafts for other novels that were never written

Paul does not give Anakin vibes. Anakin gives Paul vibes. Dune was written 11 years before the first Star Wars movie was made, and Lucas drew a lot from it.
Spice is even still a tradeable currency in the Star Wars criminal underworld.
Thats what I loved the most and was so happy they got right amongst ALL of the books to movie stuff Dennis Masterfully did.
It was the transition from Paul Muadid Usul into the Kwisatz Haderach. We spent so much time with Paul that we KNEW him. And suddenly after he drank the Water Timothee captured that immediate change to how he spoke and walked and looked and held himself and interacted with others. Just brilliant direction and acting skill from Dennis and Timothee. We needed to buy it that hed finally become this messianic Superbeing that has access to such knowledge that it becomes prescience and they pull it off.
27:15 Paul has blue eyes because they were harvesting spice so it's in the air.. Also "prolonged exposure to spice has given Fremen their distinctive blue eyes" We don't really get context of how long Paul is in Dune because there's no seasons so confusion is understandable :D
Also the first movie literally begins with the Fremen ambushing Harkonnen harvesting so they clearly know where they harvest.
Aaaand Chani name is a prophecy as she said, she actually fulfilled it by shedding a tear into the Water of Life.
given that ALia is actually present and about 4 years old in the actual story, instead of Denis ignoring her, shows how much time passed before the EMperor came.

Dune Part 1 and Part 2 are adapted from the first Dune book so when part 2 first came out it wasn’t confirmed whether they were adapting the next book into a third movie since. but after it was so successful they announced the third
the thing to remember is that the bene gesserit artificially crossed bloodlines to “make” a messiah through the use of the spice over hundreds of years, so it’s more like there isn’t really a prophet. He’s more like a genetically engineered super being that fits the description of a person the bene gesserit had been describing to the Fremen as a means of controlling them, where they knew they were making it up
I watched this in theatres it was the best thing I have ever witness, huge respect for not going and instead doing a video.

Just saying, ur question about whether paul is just deceiving them or actually wants to live by their ways was answered in the scene u asked it in, a moment before Chani joined Paul when he was sitting down he took off his father#s ring and said he found his way or something like that, meaning he chose the fremen
the time had to be compressed for the sake of the movie. in the novel, it took Paul a couple of years fighting the Harkonnens with the Fremen before the Emperor finally arrived. during that time Paul and Chani had a baby, that was killed in a Harkonnen attack at their sietch.
I hope you could see it in the theatres! I think they are still showing them in some cinemas in Germany and Sweden, so maybe you can get lucky🎉
What I love about dune is the power of an idea. An idea becoming a belief. A belief becomes power. Power becomes tyranny. Tyranny ends in martyrdom or total annihilation. I love how the women manipulate and control. Ultimately Paul does what’s best as humanity was facing annihilation if he didn’t become the messiah. Fate whether it’s a long awaited plan or meant to be. It happened. So wild. The power of an idea spread quietly is very very dangerous. It’s how a Holocaust happens. It’s how people turn against their neighbours.

Think of this as the thematic equivalent of this universe's "season one of Game of Thrones". Everything in part 1 and 2 are dominoes, and by the time things really get going, you'll look back on this and feel like everyone was worried about the wrong shit.😂

- Austin Butler had a skull cap covering his hair and his eyebrows because he had another acting job lined up immediately after he finished Dune. And, you are correct, Butler does sound like Stellan Skarsgard (The Baron). Butler watched Skarsgard films to get the way he talks since Feyd was raised by the Baron.
- Dune was published in 1965 and is basically science fiction's answer and equivalent to Lord of the Rings. It won the Nebula and Hugo Awards for Best Novel, the highest honors in sci-fi literature. The book was tremendously influential. There is a documentary you should see about the first attempt to bring Dune to the big screen by Mexican surrealist filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky. The film is called Jodorowsky's Dune, and make no mistake, the film Jodorowsky sought to make was never produced due to the budget, but the people who worked on it are still influencing science fiction films today. Frank Herbert used to half-joke that he could have sued George Lucas because of all of the similarities between Dune and Star Wars, but he never did. Lucas has also flatly denied being influenced by Dune. If you see the documentary, the team Jodorowsky put together made a huge book of concept art and completely storyboarded the film...I kinda think Lucas might have peeked through one of the books floating around the studios at the time, which was the early 1970s. But, that's my theory with no proof.
- The Water of Life is the bile of the "little makers" as the Fremen call them. What is not covered in the film is some of the properties of the spice. The smell and the initial taste of spice is like a very strong cinnamon. After the initial taste, it never tastes the same, but always smells of cinnamon. The spice is a byproduct of the life cycle of the worms, and how is kinda involved...suffice it to say, the Water of Life also has the same cinnamon smell, so I guess it also tastes of cinnamon as well (but, I do not recall if the novel got that specific).
- The reveal of Jessica being the daughter of Baron Harkonnen is only half of the story. Her mother was the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, who tested Paul with the box. To get even weirder...the reason that the Baron is so fat is that he angered Mohiam so much that when they did it to create Jessica, she also created a kind of super STD just for him as they were doing the deed. He was built more like Feyd at the time...and, this is only hinted at in the movie, The Baron is gay. So, there were...performance issues. The disease left the Baron with an eventually tremendous weight gain, with his bones becoming very brittle and unable to carry his huge weight gain, and he also lost a lot of his libido. Which is why he has the device that allows him to float around.
- When Paul drinks the Water of Life, he not only gained the knowledge of his female ancestors, like all Bene Gesserit Reverend Mothers do...he gained the knowledge of his male ancestors, which the Reverend Mothers cannot access. This is the power of the Kwisatz Haderach, a male Bene Gesserit.
- Frank Herbert wrote: “I wrote the Dune series because I had this idea that charismatic leaders ought to come with a warning label on their forehead: "May be dangerous to your health." " Paul is not a hero, he is not a savior, but he is a charismatic leader.
- Dune 3 will be based on the second novel Dune Messiah, which takes place 12 years after Dune. However a few things that have been changed for these films will change things in Dune Messiah. A lot was cut from the book, some major things were altered, and the next film will need to address a lot of these things.
There were 6 Dune novels, plus another 2 by the original author's son after he passed. Everything in these two movies was from book 1. There is absolutely more story to tell.
Put respect on Feyd’s name. He’s on par with Paul. Skilled and trained, Olympic type skills said by director. He was toying w/with last guy and laughing. And he used a flame thrower. Pay attention.
Dune: Messiah is confirmed. This is the second book of the series and will be the third film. I don't know if they'll call it a part 3, though. Doubt it.
I believe he was using a subtle amount of the voice during his speech at the war council. It gets louder toward the end and then blends in with the soundtrack.

I'm reading the book currently, this is how the shields work:
Nothing that moves at a certain velocity and faster can break through a shield. Guns with bullets do not work on shields. Whatever is shot at them needs to be constantly moving forward to the victim, with a bullet it would hit the shield and fall. This is why they use lasguns, the lasers. The laser is a constant stream of destruction. Wars are not fought with guns, they're fought with assassins. Hand-to-hand combat is vastly different, with defense being fast and offense being slow to be able to penetrate the shield.
How long is the read? And how is it for beginners?
I have never read a book in my life and i am inclined to try this one.

Start with Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis first, then move on to Dune after having eased into these type books.
I have read 100+ books for fun, and I'm studying to become an ecologist & biologist. The appendix alone (at the back of the book for reference, but I like to start with these first) took me 3 consistent days to read. It has been a month and a half, and I'm halfway through the book, though I'm a slow reader.
Here's why you should not read Dune if you've never read a book before:
1. Your language is probably limited (mine is too whenever I haven't read in a while lol, this isn't meant to be a diss).
2. You would probably not be able to picture the scenes in your mind at first. When I read, it's like I'm actually there.
3. Dune is very lore-heavy. If you don't at least have an interest in science, religion, psychology, spirituality, and political systems, then you won't be able to keep up.
It would be a slow, dragging read for someone who hasn't read before imo.
Here's why you should read Dune after beginning with something easier:
1. It's fucking genius.
2. Dune is the backbone of all science-fiction from when it was published, on.
3. You will get completely sucked in to the world of Dune. The worldbuilding is insane.
4. I'm going to explain now some things which stand out to me:
- The author clearly studies or has a great interest in ecology. The first section of the appendix is about the plant and animal life and some geology of Arrakis.
- Unlike other science-fiction pieces, which focus on only the development of science and technology far in the future, Dune covers how religions, politics, and methods of war have developed over time.
- It's written in third person and includes multiple perspectives. The only time it isn't third person is when it covers someone's thoughts.
- There is a lack of the word "and" after commas. This was weird to adjust to, but I got used to it. It made scenes move quicker in my head, I guess.
- Two chapters will cover one character's experience, then the third will jump to a different character, then it will jump back to the first character in the following chapter.
- It's a huge adventure. The events that happen keep you going.

This had to be the best theater experience in IMAX. One of my favorite Sci-Fi movies of all time. The score was fucking insanity.

The first three of Frank Herbert's Dune books take place over a couple decades or so, but the other three take place over a thousand years.
Funny you should mention Paul's duality. In the long run, his love for Chani and desire for a peaceful life kept him from fully realizing the Golden Path.
The thing with Paul's sister is that there was a time jump of two years in the book when they were living with the Fremen. His sister was born, and due to the Water of Life, had the mind of a fully developed adult.

Dying, but still alive, and they'd just push away their weak protestations like a fly buzzing near your dinner. But yes, Stilgar was upset about the water being wasted to the desert. I am glad to see you understand the importance of water now
No one so far noticed that Gurney face tanked a whip strike just to end Rabban that quickly. It looks like he did not block it and took the whip face on with his scar.
Have you ever heard Elvis speaking voice? Austin was speaking like his uncle and whoever they are.

@justsomerandomguy992 honestly about a 4/10 & 5/10 respectively. Part 2 gets a higher rating solely based on the fact that I at least finished it in 1 sitting.
I found them both to be so over indulgent on the best part of Snyder's work that it ruins them. The visuals by themselves are OK. The cgi is decent, but when you watch things like Dune or even Shogun. You end up seeing more lower stakes errors than normal. And green screen scenes just look a little worse than normal.

If you want to see more of Timothée Chalamet in this type of role (coming into that power/leadership, but without the sci-fi of Dune), I recommend the 2019 Netflix original movie "The King"

I had goosebumps the entire time watching this in IMAX, the sheer scale of it is just amazing, the sound effects and visuals were so incredible.
It's some top tier acting imo. Movie is phenomenal.
Just a point, when you say “imagine there was no worms, just hours and hours of mining spice” that’s not quite true as spice is made by the worms eating the sand and then secreting spice. If the worms were gone then spice wouldn’t exist.

It'll re-release in IMAX when award season comes around - it's going to win so many awards. I've never seen explosions that look as good as the ones in this film. They don't mask the scale, like Nolan had to do with Oppenheimer's nuke test, which looked like a rat fart in comparison to what the VFX team did here.
I highly recommend it in IMAX. Top 3 IMAX experience I've ever had was when the worm is coming to Paul for his first ride. I could feel my heartstrings thrumming with the bass. Nuts.
I highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend reading the first Dune book, as good as these movies are, the books still take it to that next level for me.

There was so much game of thrones style build up in the books they could have easily filled a 10 hour miniseries. But Dune deserves the IMAX treatment visually, and I believe Villeneuve did a pretty good job getting to heart of what Frank Herbert intended.
Seb -- This movie and the first were from the first book, DUNE. The next movie, DUNE 3, will be of the second book, DUNE: MESSIAH.
Honestly I watched this movie not expecting much but god was I wrong this movie was absolute PEAK the cinematography, story, character arcs, visual effects it was PEAK instantly became my second favourite film of all time behind Pirates of the Carribbean at world's end
This movie is the conclusion of the first book, so the next movie will be a true sequel. When it comes out I’m sure you can catch the first two in theaters in the weeks ahead.
