Finally. Someone who uses the cricut that has an actual design background. Thank you. You should try to work for Cricut! Their design space is absolutely horrendous.
Right? The fact that cricut design space doesn't have fonts that are ALREADY FILLED IN and aren't just outlines for drawing/writing/foiling is absolutely ridiculous. No one should have to spend this much time to get solid text..
This is still so helpful! Have you considered making an update video? I am using the current (2021 I think) Inkscape and cricut design space and they have made a few changes.
Thank you for this. Very helpful as I'm learning how to use my new Cricut and want to do things that are not "stock". Since you spent so much time in doing this, it occurred to me that if you were to type out the entire alphabet (upper and lowercase), do the tracing steps, you could save the file in Inkscape (or other drawing software) for future projects and then just copy the letters that you might want for your a new phrase. I certainly will get a lot of practice using my pen tool since I'm also new to Illustrator!
Thank you so much for this video. It was so helpful. I was always so frustrated that I had to pay for a writing fonts in design space and now I can make my own!! Beautifully explained and so easy to follow!!!
I'm using Illustrator 2021 and struggling to find some of these menu options. I'm so happy to finally have someone who usues real programs and not the farce Design Space lol
Thanks for taking the time to create this tutorial! There are so many wonderful fonts in the marketplace so it is wonderful that I don't have to be limited to those in Design Space.
It is good to see that it can be done. Thanks so much. It is a lot of work but useful for small things like a signature or heading. I don't think I would have the patience for a lot of letters. Thanks again.
I feel as though I have been searching forever before finally stumbling on your video. Thank you so much. I don't mind taking the time at all to play with this. WELL worth it. Great tutorial. :)
Very nice tutorial. Yes it is a lot of work, but once you have a whole alphabet down I bet it can be reuse those letters with another sentiment. This video actually helped me learn more about using all those path tools in Inkscape too. Thank you! I know you used Sunlight font in the tutorial, but I love the font you used in your title "How to turn any font...." What font is that?
Thank you or this tutorial. I used this technique after hours of turning a png into svg and it not giving the results I wanted. I traced what I wanted out of it and was able to make what I needed! Thank you, again!!
Great explanation of how 'writing style fonts' work! I use Adobe Illustrator and the tool 'offset path'. Does inkscape have something like that? It will definitely speed things up compared to using the pen tool. I am having to do some of this for some of my wedding stuff - but luckily I (and a million other people) am using Futura, so it's been very straight forward (pun intended). I was fine with my text, but came here to figure out how I should go about doing the punctuation - your info about the dot over the i was great. Thanks!
Inkscape does have an inset/offset path tool, but that will still result in a 'loop' of text as it were instead of straight lines, if that makes sense?
@@msjennl10 Yup! I was assuming one would still have to delete half of the loop. Still a bit of work, but at least the curvature would stay as close as possible to the original font without so much monkeying around.
Thank you for explaining why I couldn't get downloaded fonts to write correctly in Cricut Design Space!! I admit this all seems very overwhelming to me, but I will download a free app & give it a try :) Your tutorial was very informative & helpful! Thanks for taking time to share with us!
What version of design space are you using? I cannot find any area in my design space that lets me choose write. On the right side of the design space all I see is layers and color sync. It does not give me the option to select write instead of cut. I do not get the window that opens up with the scissors or pen or select colors. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Awesome technique, will definitely give this a try. Do those pens fit in the cricut adapter or is there a different adapter I would have to use in order to put the pens you used in?
I have used GellyRoll pens and others the same size/type by removing the pend adapter that holds the pen and using a pencil grip that i cut down one side around the pen to make it fit. :) you can find adapters for other pens but they were expensive and I got the pencil grip from my son's pencil box!
Thank you so much for this video!!! I teach basic graphic design, so this will be great practice on using the pen tools! I use Gravit.io, a free online vector design program, but was able to adapt these instructions easily! Thank you for sharing!!
it's likely you had some multiple overlapping paths! Instead of combine you can try Path>Union or just group them together by selecting both and using Object>Group. I hope that helps!
M P Sunlight is a font I downloaded from the website The Hungry JPEG! Inkscape will only have the fonts you have accessible in other programs on your computer such as Word.
If you were really ambitious and had time to kill, could you do this to all letters in a font file and create your own font to import into DS? Doubt I'll ever have that much ambition or time LOL
No, font formats are made to be complete vectors and these are simply strokes. There is no format which would allow you to save these to type out into DS, although it would be awesome if cricut could allow people to tap into whatever they've developed! What you can do is have a file saved as .svg and simply rearrange the letters by dragging and dropping, then export the phrase.
If you are trying to do this on GIMP, you can't: GIMP will not create SVG files (the tutorial mentions - momentarily - that the process will not work with jpg)
Im trying to replicate this process on an image which does the same thing when i try to write it in design space, but when i do this process, it does not show me an outline, just a blank box. How can this be if cricut is seeing it as an outline filled in?
Is there any way that the single stroke be continuous without the Cricut doing letter by letter? I want to use a calligraphy pen and tried this method but it still isn't the look I'm going for
Geo F like every letter connected? You can go as long as you like! There are a few times I connect two or more letters together. It means you may be drawing over one like more than once, but that's the way we write after all!
Honestly if I knew I had to do this much work just to write on a piece of paper with my favorite fonts, I never would have purchased the Cricut. Complete waste of money. I'll have to use my old school printer instead, since I have so much to write.
Some programs have tools that make this much faster - Like offset path in Adobe Illustator. Then, as others have stated, you can just do the whole alphabet, 0-9, punctuation at once and then keep it saved somewhere. Funny to be so far in the future and still virtually setting letters in a printing press!
really sad that you have to do all this work and it can't be easily changed in design space, just shows the limitations of the program and that they want you to spend money on their shit.
I hear you, I mainly do print then cut - love the professional look more than the marker writing look. But I really want a foil quill to add metallic graphics / lettering to paper projects, so I need this technique.
Finally. Someone who uses the cricut that has an actual design background. Thank you. You should try to work for Cricut! Their design space is absolutely horrendous.
Don't technically have a design background, just a tenacious drive to 'figure things out'! Thank you though!

It is a lot of work. You did a great job of explaining everything. Thank you. I might use the technique for something very special.

Evelyn Wald absolutely, and I have done that when doing something like addressing invitations!
Glad I found this video. It will really help in making my invitations.

Thank you so much for the awesome tutorial, exactly what I was wanting to learn. Very clear & concise.
Thanks for the video! Do you know why it keeps locking to certain areas of the letter? It does let me create my path freely....
Great video and explanation. Going to try this now. Can you import fonts into Inkscape?
Thank you! I think I’m going to try importing my signature and using this technique.

The font is Girl Friday! One of my favorites. I'm glad this helped you learn more about inkscape!
Thank you SO much for this. I got some 3d printed pen adapters on etsy and with this tutorial my options are endless know!!!!
Thank you or this tutorial. I used this technique after hours of turning a png into svg and it not giving the results I wanted. I traced what I wanted out of it and was able to make what I needed! Thank you, again!!
Fascinating technique! I will certainly remember this for future projects. Thanks!

Thanks so much for this tutorial! I’m going to try it out tonight 🤞🏼
I just found your video. Thanks so much!
So incredibly helpful! Thank you for a great tutorial! :)
That is pretty awesome but, way to much work for me...Thanks for sharing tho :)

I was wondering if this could be done. Thank you so much for posting your video. I am going to try it using Inkscape.
and thank you for including the shortcut keys.
Awesome technique, will definitely give this a try. Do those pens fit in the cricut adapter or is there a different adapter I would have to use in order to put the pens you used in?
Leslie Garcia they fit in the normal slot!
I googled Inkspace. Which one am I supposed to download? TIA
I love this.......You are a excellent teacher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this was so easy to understand!!!!!!!!Thank you.....Diane
Amazing! I had no idea that I could use different markers in my machine! What other brands have you used with success?
I have used GellyRoll pens and others the same size/type by removing the pend adapter that holds the pen and using a pencil grip that i cut down one side around the pen to make it fit. :) you can find adapters for other pens but they were expensive and I got the pencil grip from my son's pencil box!
Great video thanks so much
So do you have to upload all of your fonts into Inkscape ?
Any idea on how to do this with Adobe Illustrator? I can't seem to figure it out!
Should be very similar with just different shortcuts. Try hitting enter after you are done with your stroke?
@@msjennl10 when I click outline, nothing happens with Adobe
@@jeffandali7904 I don't have Adobe 🤷🏻♀️ inkscape is free though.
My design space doesn't look like that. Has very limited buttons. It's annoying what very limited I can do on it.
Thank you so much!! great help
which plotter are you using
Is this the same same creating a vector image of the font?
No, if you do that it will outline the font instead of "writing" it
Thank you so much for this video!!! I teach basic graphic design, so this will be great practice on using the pen tools! I use Gravit.io, a free online vector design program, but was able to adapt these instructions easily! Thank you for sharing!!
Heather F love this!! Thank you so much for sharing this site🙏🏼
Tried to follow this. Got to the end and now when i do my last path> combine my word looks very weird. Any suggestions?
it's likely you had some multiple overlapping paths! Instead of combine you can try Path>Union or just group them together by selecting both and using Object>Group. I hope that helps!
Sorry but my inkscape doesn't have the sunlight. Is this the old version of inkscape? But how can I add that font ( sunlight) into my inkscape fonts?
M P Sunlight is a font I downloaded from the website The Hungry JPEG! Inkscape will only have the fonts you have accessible in other programs on your computer such as Word.
ok thank you

I wish cricut had this built into design space.

Why do you make double bezier strokes? If you made single wouldn't it write a single stroke and therefore eliminate the gaps in the letters?
I do it for added thickness!
Im trying to replicate this process on an image which does the same thing when i try to write it in design space, but when i do this process, it does not show me an outline, just a blank box. How can this be if cricut is seeing it as an outline filled in?
