Jolland is a fucking hero. Reynauld was dead and the others were freaking out, certain that this was the end. But Jolland manned up and saved himself and his remaining friends from certain doom. And they lived to see another day.
Can we push Jolland and ascend him to a place in the lore? When the party was at its darkest hour, when Reynauld had met his end in the depths of his despair, Jolland the Leper found himself at death's door and rejected it with pure leprous vigor. Far removed from True Rage and The Storm, he embodies friendship in the face of overwhelming bullshit. He's the hypest shit.
I started playing this game yesterday. Surviving the fights is kind of trivial. It's the constant sanity damage and the massive abundance of negative traits that seem to be the problem. A couple of lucky sanity attacks from some skele-mage turning someone Negative basically condemns the whole party to death. Think I'll start over and just never click on loot piles. I'll find 100 gold in one, and the next five are just curses.
I've found the best way to deal with sanity damage is to just let the light go to 0. Once it hits 0 you get massively more loot, making it easier to upgrade heroes, remove negative traits, etc, and the massively increased critical hit change, and the potential of part wide stress relief from every critical strike, means that you'll be criting so often that stress should be a non-issue, particularly if you bring a bounty hunter or grave robber with you.
To be fair, fumbling around inside an Iron Maiden would result in something nasty. But you would fear nothing if you follow the Way of the Leper. Think of the benefits: God-like strikes (or misses) and being able to heal yourself solely off of the traumas of daily life. It's great!
Here's a helpful guide to learn about all of the possible outcomes from every loot pile in the game as well as how to negate any negative outcomes: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=386706480&insideModal=1
I love how Reynauld basically breaks as a person near the end, they all sit down to camp and recover, and Pat has the jester just mock him. But the best part is that Reynauld was so broken that he didn't even care. Bauldry mocks him and Reynauld just goes, "shut the fuck up, I'm busy" as he ignores him to drown himself in his own failure.
It seems like in the "everyone is Zubaz" thread of thinking, it should be Rage to Zubaz, then Zubaz to Jolland. also why do people like the idea that everyone is Zubaz? cant everyone be their own person?
I get the feeling of Rage is Woolie's thing, Zubaz is Matt's thing (despite woolie stealing the idea of him), NOW I WANT PAT TO FUCKING PUSH JOLLAND!!!
Dave Gage OOOOH,GOD! We can keep up the Joestar legacy of accidental mutilations and just replace whatever limbs fall off due to leprosy with robot limbs
You guys need to do a full LP when they get done with this. Jolland will become the next grand figure of the Zaibatsu. Killing and giving hope with his leprosy!
helter1234 Totally agree, one more episode like this where Jolland carries the team on his rotting shoulders, and I would even say he deserve to be put over.
I hope the devs keep working on this game. Like, even once they have a full product to offer, I hope they still add to it. This has a lot of potential.
Calamity Cookie You are thinking small time son... I'm imagining a mini-marathon starting with a TLC match between Rage, 'Baz, and Jolland. Then, the 2 left standing get a 10m breather and immediately follow it up with an old-school Hell-in-a-Cell match (before all the safety shit was built into them).
Tremendous way to go out, what amazing last words! And then Jolland steps in as the young pupal of Reynauld and took his place. But in the end, where Reynauld saw darkness and died, Jolland saw light and survived. A hero, just as he who hast came before him.

yeah, i think a full LP would get tiring at some point, unless they found a set of rules for it that'd keep it interesting. could be a rad choice for a stream, though.
Im really eye-sweating right now at this turn of events subscript i've put in my head of how Reynauld has such low self esteem everyone tries to cheer him up, but only mocking him works now, and the Jester of all party members is holding the party together in Reynauld's diress. Now we must ask, was Reynauld's ... exit, a weight lifted, or rather, a reason to trek onward?
Leper is the most underrated character in the game. For only -10 ACC compared to crusander people flame on him. Forgetting that he has a frickin' +6 HEAL at level 0 and unmatched Raw Attack power from any other class.
I can just picture the team fighting a mob of undead and giving everything they've got while the jester is hopping around in the background playing his lute.
These kinds of videos are the best promotions for these kinds of games. I've tried to watch other people play this game, but it was just so DULL watching them and so I had no interest in this. THESE videos have actually got me interested though. The fact that playing for about two hours left them with a feeling of "Oh...FUCK. This is hard as shit. Holy fucking fuck." in a good way speaks volumes about the quality.
***** Nope. It's not just that. Trust me, you're gonna be pretty vocal when your level 3 gets killed after it took you hours to get him there, or when your whole insane team refuses to retreat -_-
A jester with OCD who makes fun of everyone and everything a heroic paladin lady a Brave leper and a hopeless knight darkest Dungeon truly is the best game ever !
There seems to be a strange misconception that leprosy just causes extremities to fall off where that isn't the case. it causes people to lose feeling which can lead to loss of extremities due to repeated injury. So that's why the Leper is such a cool guy. He puts himself in danger because he cannot feel pain and he puts everything into the fight because he has no one to live for.
Rage is rage. Zubaz is the shock and awe, like an oncoming storm, but Jolland... JOLLAND IS HOPE! For when faced by the madness and death of his beloved friend Reynauld, the flagging spirits of his weaker companions who needed protection, and his own imminent death he said no! He spat in the Grim Reaper's face, and through sheer force of will he brought his enemies low and saved his companions. Thus, Jolland the leper attained immortality. Some say he still walks the Earth to this day, fighting off the forces of madness and evil. Some say he fought the Rage and lived. Yet others say he pursues David Cage's head in recompense for all the people have been tricked into playing his shitty games. People say a lot of things, and these are all stories for another time. For now, know this. Jolland the leper is a hero. The one this Zaibatsu needs right now, but definitely not the one Woolie deserves.
And so starts the next episode of the three fools, leprechaun from lucky charms, Swamp Thing, and Bed Head Sir Henry Motherfucker, going back into what is apparently (according to the fanbase) the equivalent to a small corner of Plague's house next to a window, a lamp, and mountains of rolled up kleenexes. May god think about having mercy on their souls and Swamp Things' black spiral in his chest....
How you win at Darkest Dungeon. 1. Get a Jester 2. Put him in the back 3. SPAM BATTLE BALLAD AND THOSE SICK SICKLE MOVES 4. Watch your enemies die as the ballad gives your party way better speed, damage and crit chance
Jolland was a Leprosy-afflected down on his luck, tangoing with thoughts of suicide, when Reynauld the boss-pimp Crusader waltzes in and gives him the chance to join an epic quest. Wanting to be remembered for what he did rather than what he is, Jolland joins, finding comfort in the juggernaut that led him, Bauldry, and Peccoth through countless battles. However, as Jolland began to believe in himself once more, it seemed that the Crusader's inner vices began to show through the armor, and gradually take hold. Jolland did what he could for the despairing knight, as did the others, but it was all for naught, as Reynauld finally lost himself to the darkness in his soul. Jolland tried to remain optimistic, confident that he could pull the Crusader out of his funk, but his hopes were dashed as Reynauld was caught in the neck by a skeleton's rusted blade. Jolland, tears in his eyes, was forced to take lead and lead the remaining party members out of the dungeon. He would never know if the blow was lucky, or if Reynauld purposely stepped in its path, but he vowed to remember the Crusader as the man who once saved his life. "Thou shalt live on in mine skin lesions and pimp-ass broken sword, brother."
Here's a bit of a headcanon proposition for you all; what would Dismas' reaction be to Reynauld's death? Those two were the first heroes the zaibatsu had, presumably they had traveled a while together before arriving at the Darkest Estates, maybe even become friends. The highwayman has been busy de-stressing from his previous labours by drinking himself into a stupor. What would happen when he looks up from his tankard with bleary bloodshot eyes to see the other three returning bloodied and battle-weary, and he learns what happened to the crusader? Would it depress him, would he become brash and abusive, would he be inspired to avenge him? Or being a self confessed robber, swindle and drunkard, would he simply not care?
Jolland the savior, Afflictions be damned, he shall rise beyond the hand fate has dealt him. Witnessing the fall of his once great ally, he must bear the burden, not only the death of his friend, but the fate of his team. But, the heavens shine on thy, revealing the will that always resided inside him, a will strong enough to withstand the hounds of madness at his door. He will forge his own destiny, or die trying.
Out of the four main Zaibatsu members, who do you think will lose all sanity first? I'm really guessing Woolie despite his dwelling of the Woolie Hole. The further down the dungeon they go, Pat begins to cackle and laugh harder and louder, but only to the benefit for everyone's stress level.
It's probably going to be the person you expect the least, but I do think that Woolie would be very prone to sickness and weak against insects, tropical islands, pies, rats, and an assortment of other random things
God. Damn. What a game. What an absolute glorious masterpiece of a thing. What an _actual work of art_ that is being created. This thing has everything I ADORE in a strategy game! Everything! Randomization, atmosphere, creativity, sheer challenge, _real emotions and pressure..._ AGH! It's too hard to hold on to my hopelessness for the game industry when geniuses are out there between the cracks designing _solid gold!!_ I'm completely effing sold, you four did your work good. Kickstarting, preordering, whatever, I'm IMMEDIATELY going to be hitting this up when it's ready, I don't care if it's gonna force me to be eating oatmeal and ramen for a month doing so, I'll be eating those things _while fucking playing THIS._
This makes me really want to play the game and roll an all-jester party. front jester spamming solo, middle two attacking/buffing, back guy buffing non-stop; it sounds like it could work out pretty well. And then you when you set up camp, you can have them mock each other equally so everyone gets a major stress decrease.
Jester is amazing, just using him poorly. Run dirk stab, battle balled, solo, inspiring tune. He's a support character primarily used to relieve stress and buff the party but he can come in and finish enemies off too with dirk stab. It moves him to the front, but he can move all the way back in one turn from what I've seen, might depend on a stat. In the event there's still people alive when you use dirk stab you have solo to do a debuff before you move him back.
GashPlague Must be of your creepy sex annoucer plauge. Also check out a game called Grand Knight History, don't have the best gameplay and not as extreme but beautiful as hell.
Since Jester boosts both ACC and CRIT it actually seemed to be really good with your Leper. I noticed the fight where everything started going to shit with the misses was when you were using the de-stress song instead of the buff song.
To think our champion was renauld, but he was lost only to have jolland shine were he faulted. this reminds me of anakin and luke from star wars. the chosen one falls only to be replaced.
Get your milk together Liam, Jester and Grave Robber are actually really potent characters. Jester buffs the shit out of everyone with speed and crit bonuses. Grave robber just shuffles forward and back stabbing face and stunning fools with insane crits.
no one really seem to give the jester a fair chance, noertherlion at least figured out his stat boosts stack and that he was designed for being more up close before he wrote him off.
Omg that insanity stuff your party can go through is so innovative! I love the part where the knight actually refused the heal..... because he was so messed up and confused.
Reynauld basically became Chrono Trigger's bad end. "But the Reynauld refused to change." But srsly, a good tweak for this game would be the ability to regain your characters Insanity effect by winning a number of fights in a row. Nothing turns a sour mind around more than constantly trumping the enemy.
Okay Fuckers, you can not stop playing this game. It is massively entertaining, due in part but not entirety to, hearing Pat cry and make so many panicked decisions. For some reason this playthrough is just too gods-damned engrossing and I feel the stress of each decision. You have to keep playing.
it's like watching someone get burned, hit by a car, poisoned, beaten by the NYPD, and then hit by the same car coming back from the grocery store but the person taking all this just refuses to die, but has the most depressing demeanor. who is this person you ask? they call him punished reynault.
This is the first game on early access that has really tempted me. I just love how each encounter is a threat thanks to limited healing and increased stress. And I love the look of the game and how combat is handled.
We need to push a Leper Wrestler super hard for Springslam you guys! No one will want to touch him, he'll just hobble after his opponents as they run around the ring until they lose their sanity and submit.
Bauldry succeeded despite Pat's attempts to fuck him over, Peccoth was basically carrying 3 corpses through the dungeons, and Jolland was an insurmountable badass. Reynauld though? Hopeless.
@11:04 for the Jester, "This is a whole party buff that sucks" and around @25:50 with Liam rolling his eyes at it. Holy god damn shit, Pat and Liam. How wrong you are. That party buff is fucking AMAZING, especially at higher ranks. It acts as Haste, +crit, and +accuracy. AND. IT. STACKS.
Pat: "You're totally right" "You're totally right" "You're totally right" "You're totally right" "You're totally right" "You're totally right" This is the new Dark Souls play through.
This is such a good video. They should come back to it with all the new features and do a later game long mission as a once off. A run through the actual darkest dungeon or something
I agree that a full LP of this wouldn't be a good idea, but it'd be cool if they could do a 2-6 episode thing in which they could see new areas, new heroes, fight a boss or two, etc. It could either just be a short snapshot of the game continuing from where they left off, or it could jump around from episode to episode, with time skips. Maybe one day.
I was getting stressed out just from watching this, but in the good way. PLEASE do a full LP of this with the whole zaibatsu when it comes out. This game is perfect for you guys.
jolland is awesome! that whole leper desing is pretty cool, like the way he takes of the mask when camping and the others are like "ewwww" but he gets solace
I would LOVE to see a super best friends of this when its fully released. But god please don't let Pat stay at the controls! It might just be me but it drove me crazy when he wasn't reading things properly or exploring all the options. Like in the guild I wanted to see if you could upgrade the guild to unlock those other slots to make your skills better. But, having said that. I also understand they need to keep the game play from slowing down too much for the audience's sake. Overall though, a really interesting game and I can't wait to play it!
When Reynauld received the deathblow, his armor clattered to the ground, the twisted pile of shredded meat he had become spilling out over the crusader's steel. Seriously, dude had a staggering amount of crap wrong with him by the end. Though really, it looks like Pat got super lucky. 3 out of 4 resolve tests ended with GLORIOUS HYPE.
Jolland is a fucking hero. Reynauld was dead and the others were freaking out, certain that this was the end. But Jolland manned up and saved himself and his remaining friends from certain doom. And they lived to see another day.
Rip in peace Reynauld.
Man with leprosy says "I grow in strength every day"
Can we push Jolland and ascend him to a place in the lore? I'm pushing him with fanart RIGHT NOW
Dead Brain Tell me where I can go to find it, I NEED TO SEE THIS!!
It's gonna take a while but check the 'two best friends play' or 'tbfp' tag on Tumblr. Or just the 'Jolland' tag.
I am waiting with bated breath.
I am all that I am
I started playing this game yesterday. Surviving the fights is kind of trivial. It's the constant sanity damage and the massive abundance of negative traits that seem to be the problem. Until the game is completed, I think they'll wait.
Imagine an epic battle between Rage and Jolland
Calamity Cookie
You are thinking small time son...
I'm imagining a mini-marathon starting with a TLC match between Rage, 'Baz, and Jolland.
Then, the 2 left standing get a 10m breather and immediately follow it up with an old-school Hell-in-a-Cell match (before all the safety shit was built into them).
Reynauld went from being the fearless hero to a hopeless husk of a man within two battles.
Tremendous way to go out, what amazing last words!
And then Jolland steps in as the young pupal of Reynauld and took his place.
But in the end, where Reynauld saw darkness and died, Jolland saw light and survived. A hero,
just as he who hast came before him.
"I ACCUSE THESE SPIDERS!"

Over a year later, still waiting for a full LP.
I know right, game's awesome.
It's not a good LP game, tho. It has too much RNG, and unlike Xcom, it's very grindy and nonlinear.
I can see a lot of people hating them for it.
yeah, i think a full LP would get tiring at some point, unless they found a set of rules for it that'd keep it interesting.
could be a rad choice for a stream, though.
Animation of Liam as a jester playing his lute on the ground half dead, i want it.
I NEEEED IIIIIIT!
Everybody dance...
Dasgath everybody's taking the chance
Im really eye-sweating right now at this turn of events subscript i've put in my head of how Reynauld has such low self esteem everyone tries to cheer him up, but only mocking him works now, and the Jester of all party members is holding the party together in Reynauld's diress. When these characters fall into pieces they fall into pieces,

Agreed. I thought it sounded interesting beforehand but this video tipped me over to buying the game when it's done.
Agreed I was total sucker when I watched this and bought it. No regrets.
The hype of the Zaibatsu is a potent thing. It got me to buy Double Dragon Neon and Revengeance (and probably this game in the very near future).

I like how the weirdo clown and the guy that is decomposing have greater willpower than the zealous knight.
You guys are gonna come back to this on release right? Right? RIGHT?!

Amazing how much this game changed over the years.
Reynauld's whistling at 23:00 signifies he kleptomania, meaning he took the loot in the pack for himself, you get nothing.
47:45 that team is just Woolie, Matt and Pat
Once I was but a poor heathen myself, but this game has opened my mind and my heart; I am now a true believer in the power of RNGesus.

Will the same fate of Pate speak for the jester?
Next time on Darkest Dugeon Z!

So I just literally went onto steam and bought it.
And now it's done installing. Thank you Zaibatsu!
Reynold showed his true Emo colors, Jolland & the rest proved themselves true heroes.
The story of Reynauld, the shiny knight who slowly turned into a husk, really was something. Seriously, he and the leper were the best part of the LP!
Jesters are actually really good as frontliners due to their nice dodge bonus and offensive skills.
1.0 is out right now, the Darkest Dungeon is now unlocked.
Jester's Party Buff is really great once it's leveled past 1
So much crazy talk and Pat speaking in conviction about the games mechanics when he has knowledge of them.
Damn, why does this game look so good?!
***** the slight camera angles add a dramatic flair to everything too. the atmosphere is really spot on.
The announcer's grim, gravelly voice adds quite a lot, too.
GashPlague Must be of your creepy sex annoucer plauge.
Also check out a game called Grand Knight History, don't have the best gameplay and not as extreme but beautiful as hell.
Looks like Klei did the art, or had a hand in it, I'm assuming. I really liked the look of Don't Starve.
Because of the Mike Mignola-esque artwork
Since Jester boosts both ACC and CRIT it actually seemed to be really good with your Leper. I noticed the fight where everything started going to shit with the misses was when you were using the de-stress song instead of the buff song.
The first video made me get access to this game, enjoying it a lot. Can't wait to see where it goes.
To think our champion was renauld, but he was lost only to have jolland shine were he faulted. this reminds me of anakin and luke from star wars. the chosen one falls only to be replaced.
Or Oscar of Astora giving his quest on to the Chosen Undead.
TonyBMan true poor oscar once ment to be a huge role in the game only to be cut short and killed off
I love how when they camp they get camp art. Shows dedications by the team
Love that jester sprite!!!
i know the game isnt done, but this, NEEDS a full playthrough once its all done.
Get your milk together Liam, Jester and Grave Robber are actually really potent characters. Jester buffs the shit out of everyone with speed and crit bonuses. Grave robber just shuffles forward and back stabbing face and stunning fools with insane crits.
Liam- the jester really isn't useful.
Me- cause pat fucked up the skills and should be using Solo the most op move in the game
no one really seem to give the jester a fair chance, noertherlion at least figured out his stat boosts stack and that he was designed for being more up close before he wrote him off.
Omg that insanity stuff your party can go through is so innovative!
I love the part where the knight actually refused the heal..... because he was so messed up and confused.
Woolie's newest catchphrase:
BEHOLD THE POWER OF LEPROSY!
48:20 and onwards is one of my favorite moments of SBFP
*_REMIND YOURSELF THAT OVERCONFIDENCE IS A SLOW AND INSIDIOUS KILLER_*
Reynauld basically became Chrono Trigger's bad end.
"But the Reynauld refused to change."
But srsly, a good tweak for this game would be the ability to regain your characters Insanity effect by winning a number of fights in a row.
THAT LEPER IS A DAMN HERO! YOU THINK THE KIDS WANT I-PADS? NO, THEY WANT LEPROSY! THE KIDS ARE DOWN WITH THE LEPERS! IT'S THE SICKEST SHIT!
Seems fitting that the most Dark Souls-like character ends up going hollow. I would love to see more of this from the Best Friends.
AND. IT. STACKS.
This is pretty much safety dance : The game when you use that jester.
Pat:
"You're totally right"
"You're totally right"
"You're totally right"
"You're totally right"
"You're totally right"
"You're totally right"
This is the new Dark Souls play through.
I have been waiting so long for Pat's luck to run out and man I am so satisfied with the results of this episode.
"he doesn't have lockjaw he just has leprosy"
This is such a good video. They should come back to it with all the new features and do a later game long mission as a once off. A run through the actual darkest dungeon or something
I agree that a full LP of this wouldn't be a good idea, but it'd be cool if they could do a 2-6 episode thing in which they could see new areas, new heroes, fight a boss or two, etc. It could either just be a short snapshot of the game continuing from where they left off, or it could jump around from episode to episode, with time skips. Maybe one day.
Jolland is the hero we deserve.
Be calm, we will live to suffer another day, is probably the sickest thing ever said.
Holy crap, two virtues in a row!
Poor Reynauld... it seems the curse of being from Dark Souls just drove him Hollow.
Please continue this series after the game's released. The stress translates well and it's fun to watch.
Kay, that was fukn awsome! Anyone else notice how whenever jolland took a hit he would like, just stand there and take it?! LIKE A BOSS!!!
I was getting stressed out just from watching this, but in the good way. PLEASE do a full LP of this with the whole zaibatsu when it comes out. This game is perfect for you guys.
we need a full playthrough
"Game over, man! Game over!"
I was really expecting a xenomorph to jump on screen and run off with Reynauld.
Lol Jester Skill Every Rose has it's torn is a Poison song reference.......NICE
jolland is awesome! that whole leper desing is pretty cool, like the way he takes of the mask when camping and the others are like "ewwww" but he gets solace
from the point that Raynauld got hopelessness to the end of the episode I was just laughing so hard that my ribs started hurting!! lol
i hope they'll play more of this in the future
When they don't realize Solo only works if the Jester is in the 1st spot...
I really REALLY want to see them play more of this game.
